Fantasy Grammy Duets: Taylor & Kanye! Fergie & Susan Boyle!

16 December 2009 1:30 PM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

It's an honor to be nominated and even better to win, but for viewers at home, one of the best things about the Grammy Awards is the dazzling - and often surprising - array of artists who come together for unique live performances. Remember Prince and Beyoncé bringing down the house with a funky rendition of "Purple Rain" on 2004's show? Or the Jonas Brothers teaming with Stevie Wonder last year? Don’t forget Radiohead's mind-blowing collaboration with the University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band. While the Recording Academy is likely drafting a wish list of presenters and performers »

Will.i.am Recalls His First-Ever Grammys Appearance

7 December 2009 4:00 AM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

With his group the Black Eye Peas nominated for an impressive six Grammys, including the top prizes of album and record of the year, will.i.am has plenty of reasons to look forward to next month's awards show - something that wasn't necessarily the case during his first Grammy experience. "I remember that I was nervous," the musician, 34, told People about his 2005 appearance. Recalling his Grammy debut while at an event announcing the first-ever Data Awards for electronic music, he said, "I was real nervous. We performed "Where Is the Love." I remember I got up on the mic and said, »

New to Me: Purple Rain and Stunt Rock

29 November 2009 6:03 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

As the perpetual young'en on the staff, it only seems fitting that I start chronicling my encounters with whatever classic or otherwise noteworthy titles that I'm just now dusting off and catching up with. For the first in this series, I find myself tackling a double feature of '70s/'80s rock kitsch - Stunt Rock and Purple Rain.

Listen, Don't Watch: 10 Soundtracks Better Than Their Movies

12 November 2009 4:31 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Seven months ago, the movie formerly known as The Boat That Rocked had its UK theatrical release, followed up two months later with the DVD. Reviews at the time were so-so. Now the pic gets shipped state-side, renamed Pirate Radio and apparently with all the good parts taken out.

That said, the soundtrack contains 32 '60s classics from The Kinks to The Who to David Bowie — sending it straight to the "Listen, Don't Watch" category, and leaving us wondering if it belongs on our list of 10 Soundtracks Better Than Their Movies.

Entertainment Weekly Lists the 25 Best Soundtracks from the Past 25 Years

3 November 2009 2:34 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I’m no music expert what with their fancy degrees and ability to appreciate music beyond “This sounds good.”  But I do know lists and lists generate controversy and controversy equals traffic!  And with their patented “slideshow” format which creates more hits based on an itemized story, EW.com has a real racket going!

Well, we just listed it like normal people after the jump.  Take a look, see if you agree, and scream your disbelief at how a certain album you love wasn’t included.  Also, remember that this is a list of soundtracks which are usually a collection of songs used in a movie as opposed to a score which is usually the instrumental accompaniment to the film created by a single composer (although there are obviously scores created by more than one composer).

If you want to click through the list like a chump, click here. It »

Suckers Overcome Sexy Distractions, Punching For Memorable Cmj Set

26 October 2009 7:57 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

By Rya Backer

Thursday night, I had the privilege of seeing Suckers, a band I had a fondue party with the night before (you'll see footage of our melted-cheese exploits on this very Web site quite soon). They were incredible, and it was the best show I've seen since I saw Tanlines last month.

First of all, the show immediately took an unusual turn because a dude climbed up on the Studio at Webster Hall's stage and tried to punch lead singer in the face. That wasn't the only bit of extra-curricular weirdness, as later on a couple began ... let's just say they it was inappropriate.

It was a testament to how great Suckers are as a live act, because even with all distractions they still managed to turn in a signature show. Singer Quinn Walker wears makeup but applies it in a way that a seven-year-old on acid might. »

Rumored Cover Art and Title for Kris Allen's New Album

13 October 2009 2:21 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

A picture claimed as a cover art for Kris Allen's new studio album emerges. Brought forward by Barnes & Noble, it features the champ of "American Idol" season 8 wearing a black leather jacket and sitting on what looks like a theater seat.

Along with the arrival of the rumored artwork, it is speculated that Kris' forthcoming album will be self-titled. No statement has been made regarding the rumored cover art and working title.

Most recently, Kris Allen told his fans on Twitter that the soon-to-be-released effort is almost done. "We are almost done with the album, or at least my part. Got a couple more songs to finish and we will be good. Really exciting stuff!," he wrote. "Recording in the same studio that Prince recorded 'Purple Rain'! I'm trying to channel it."

Kris Allen will release the album in U.S. on November 17. For the effort, he »

Phish's Halloween Show: Which Album Will Survive?

9 October 2009 8:20 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Ever since Phish announced that they would be hosting their own three-day festival, which will be taking place on October 30 & 31 and November 1 in Indio, California at the same site as the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, speculation launched immediately about what the band would do for their "musical costume." One of the group's many traditions is to cover a classic album in its entirety on Halloween (past costumes include the Velvet Underground's Loaded and the Who's Quadrophenia), and this year will be no different.

As a way to build anticipation for the Halloween show (and the weekend itself, which is simply being called Festival 8), the band's official Web site currently contains a massive gallery of album covers. Each of these covers will be eliminated one-by-one (via a scary animated axe, complete with horror movie blood) until the last record standing gets crowned the victor. (It should be noted »

Prince Goes To Fashion Week In Paris

6 October 2009 7:31 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Fashion Week in Milan was a star-studded seven days that featured appearances from Janet Jackson, Kanye West and Amber Rose. Now that Paris is celebrating its Fashion Week, a whole new batch of musicians have made their way to France to gawk at models and celebrate fashion. Katy Perry is there, and she has been tweeting about the experience, including a hilarious observation about hearing two models attempting to smuggle McDonald's without anybody seeing them for fear of outside judgment. Fashion Week has also welcomed Prince to the fold. The singer walked the red carpet at the Chanel show yesterday, and it gave him the opportunity to show off his latest, greatest ensemble.

Actually, this particular outfit is not unlike the one he wore at the Apollo Theater a few months ago, which was the last time we parsed one of his ensembles. Why he's standing in front of bales »

Bullock 'wants to inspire Prince song'

Sandra Bullock has revealed that she fantasises about inspiring Prince. According to Jam! Showbiz, the 'Purple Rain' singer was one of Bullock's childhood heroes. Bullock Wants To Be Prince's Muse

4 September 2009 6:31 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Sandra Bullock fantasises about seducing Prince, so she can be the inspiration behind the singer's next sexy hit.

The actress has idolised the Purple Rain hitmaker since her early teens but was too shy to meet the star when she had the chance.

She explains, "There was a moment in New York in some nightclub when he was there years ago when I was a waitress. I kept walking by him, hoping he would notice. He never looked at me. I think maybe he saw me once and wrote me off and I'm pretending I might have a chance to inspire a Prince song."

Bullock hasn't given up hope of drawing the singer's attention, even though she's now married to celebrity mechanic Jesse James. But her husband shouldn't worry too much - the actress fears shattering her dreams of what being with Prince would be like if she was to actually hang-out with her pint-sized crush.

She adds, "I've seen the concerts and I don't want to meet the man who makes (me feel) sexy. Maybe he'll hate me and then I'll lose my (sexiness)." »

The Sexy Androgyny of Prince and Purple Rain

12 August 2009 12:38 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

A few days ago, Celebrate Brooklyn!, the series of concerts and events held in the Prospect Park Bandshell, held a Purple Rain sing-a-long in celebration of the film's 25th anniversary. The 2,000 seats and additional lawn space were full, with many fans clad in purple regalia, paying tribute to the man and his movie. The park joined media entities like Spin Magazine and NPR's New York station, Wnyc, which have hosted their own Rain discussions and commemorations. (Spin has even produced a tribute album by a variety of artists, including a remake of "When Doves Cry" by The Twilight Singers, featuring Apollonia, one of the film's stars.) The plot: Prince, starring as The Kid, is the head of a Minneapolis-based band whose sound falls outside of popular sensibilities. The group is barely hanging on to its headlining role at a »

'Purple Rain' Comes Pouring Down In Today's eBay Prop-Watch

27 July 2009 2:21 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

In honor of the 25th anniversary of “Purple Rain,” I’m devoting today’s eBay Prop-Watch to some cool items relating to both the movie and the companion record release. As I mentioned on the blog earlier, I’ve never actually gotten around to checking out Prince’s classic movie. There are certainly bigger holes in my film education – would you believe that I only filled “The Godfather Part II” this past weekend? – but “Purple Rain” has been a longtime fixture on my list.

Of course, just because I haven’t seen the movie doesn’t mean I can’t pimp some cool movie-related merchandise. You super-fans who don’t mind spending a bit of cash should check out this auction for an original 1984 movie poster in what looks to be perfect condition. Just know that the investment will run you around $200.

Y'all get a treat today, as I have »

The 'Purple Rain' Anniversary: Best. Assignment. Ever.

27 July 2009 2:15 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

By Selina Kaye

I love all things Prince — his music, his movies, his clothes and his hair. Most of all, I have a very special appreciation for "Purple Rain," because my parents went on their first date to see the movie. So on the 25th anniversary of the opening of the film, this is my official thank you to Prince for bringing my parents together. I couldn't have made it here without you.

When Prince first hit the music scene in 1979, he was eccentric, daring and reclusive. Hard to believe he was an introvert, right? But back then, Prince didn't give any on-camera interviews. So when "Purple Rain" premiered in 1984, fans were eager not only for his new music but for a chance to hear him speak and get an insight into what made him tick. Even when he showed up to his own red carpet, he walked right by »

Kurt Loder Remembers 'Purple Rain'

27 July 2009 8:30 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From MTV.Com: It's not hard to grasp why Purple Rain was such an event when it was first released, 25 years ago this summer: The album was a dizzying synthesis of rock, pop and R&B, and it still sounds groundbreaking today.

This was a defining moment for Prince and his greatest band, the Revolution (with which he shared, for the first time, both an unambiguous cover credit and, inside, some co-songwriting nods). The musicianship displayed on the record is exceptional: The arrangements are intricately structured, and the vocal work is dazzling; the electro-percussion is fat and beautifully ornamented, the guitars range from full-crush to feathery arpeggiation, and there are times when synthesized or actual orchestral beds drift off into stretches of harmonic abstraction that's rare in music aimed at the pop charts. (Four of the album's nine tracks were Top-40 hits; two of them — "Let's Go Crazy" and the »

Celebrate 25 Years Of 'Purple Rain' With Prince

27 July 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Today is the 25th anniversary of something awesome: Prince's "Purple Rain." At least I hear it's awesome. Here's my dark, dirty secret: I've never seen the movie. I love the album, and the Morris Day appearance in Kevin Smith's "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" (in German!). I was even up to review the 20th anniversary edition of "Purple Rain" a few years ago (five, to be precise), but a mailing mix-up put the assignment in someone else's hands.

You don't have to be a fan of Prince or of the movie to appreciate this video however. MTV covered the July 27, 1984 red carpet premiere of "Purple Rain," and the multi-instrumentalists arrival was... well let's just say that it was epic. Check out the video below and then head over to MTV.com for Eric Ditzian's rundown of the event.

Prince Takes Over MTV For 1984 'Purple Rain' Premiere

We take a look back at the premiere (and afterparty) of Prince's groundbreaking film.

You need to see this. On Friday, July 27, 1984, MTV headed to Hollywood for the A-list red-carpet premiere and booze-fueled afterparty for Prince's seminal rock film "Purple Rain." Eddie Murphy showed up sporting a leopard-print blazer, a bare chest and a leather bandana tied around his neck. Pee-wee Herman drove up in a hot-rod-flamed clown car and busted into a nasally version of "When Doves Cry." And Prince himself — his "royal badness," as the VJ Mark Goodman declared — arrived in a purple stretch limo and, flanked by beefy bodyguards, sashayed down the carpet carrying a single rose.

Today, on the 25th anniversary of the "Purple Rain" premiere, we have unearthed MTV's two-hour-long special since it is an unparalleled window into our pop-culture past, »

Phish Finalize 'Festival 8' Details, So Here Are More Musical Costume Suggestions

24 July 2009 1:22 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

After a few weeks of rumors and nail-biting, Phish have announced that they are returning to the festival game with an event they are simply calling "Festival 8," which will take place at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California (the same venue that houses the annual Coachella festival). Over three days this Halloween weekend, the band will play a total of eight sets, and one of those sets will be another grand Phish tradition: The "musical costume," where the band plays a set that consists only of a classic album in its entirety.

In past years, the group has taken on epics like the Beatles' White Album, the Velvet Underground's Loaded and the Who's Quadrophenia. We've already made a handful of suggestions about what the group could tackle this year (it'll remain a mystery until they play the first note on Halloween night), but here are a few more ideas. »

How The 'New Moon' Soundtrack Stacks Up Against Our Favorites: The Newsroom Poll

23 July 2009 1:03 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Welcome to the weekly Newsroom Poll, where we will give you a sneak peek into the lives and minds of some of the correspondents, writers, editors and producers here at MTVNews.com. Every week, they'll answer a poll question that will reveal some of what we talk about behind the scenes here in the newsroom. Enjoy!

This week, details surfaced about one of the most hotly anticipated albums of the fall. No, not Jay-z's The Blueprint 3 or Lil Wayne's Rebirth. We're talking about the soundtrack to "New Moon," which will likely feature contributions from Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Muse, Kings of Leon and Death Cab for Cutie. There was also the announcement of the soundtrack to "Jennifer's Body," the new Diablo Cody-penned horror film. With that, combined with the quarter-century anniversary of one of the finest film soundtracks ever constructed (that being Prince's Purple Rain), this week's question is: »
