It may be a mystery to famed director David Lynch that Patrick Stewart was an acclaimed actor when the latter showed up on the set of his 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune.
Well, sometimes directors have a clear vision of the ideal actor for a role, while other times, a happy accident can result in unexpected greatness. Such was the case with Lynch’s original 1984 Dune adaptation, in which he erroneously cast Patrick Stewart in a role that was meant for someone else.
Yes, Stewart, 83, inadvertently obtained the role of Gurney Halleck. In the process of replacing Aldo Ray at the eleventh hour, the director erroneously cast another Patrick Stewart.
David Lynch’s Dune 1984
Aside from being a financial disaster and receiving negative reviews, the film has developed a cult following over the years, and this intriguing casting mishap is just one of the many oddball tales surrounding its creation.

Updated, 5:30 Pm: After a three-year legal battle, a California jury today found that Google violated antitrust laws when it removed Fortnite maker Epic Games and other publishers from its app store. The jurors in San Francisco found in favor of Epic on all of the 11 claims.
“Victory over Google!” Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney posted on X/Twitter. “After 4 weeks of detailed court testimony, the California jury found against the Google Play monopoly on all counts. … Thanks for everyone’s support and faith! Free Fortnite!”
Judge James Donato of U.S. District Court in Northern California will consider remedies in the case in January, Sweeney added.
Read details about the case below.
Previous Update, August 13, 2020: Google and Apple have barred Epic Games from its app stores. As of late Thursday, neither was allowing the publisher’s uber-popular Fortnite game to be downloaded and installs on devices through their outlets.

Netflix pressed “Start” on Netflix Games in fall 2021 — not that most of the streamer’s 247 million global subscribers know about the service, let alone play it. However, betting against Netflix hasn’t made for a lot of wins.
It would be “foolish” to “write off Netflix’s plans as non-consequential,” MoffettNathanson gaming analyst Clay Griffin wrote in a November 6 note to clients (and obtained by IndieWire). The film and TV industries once did that “at their own peril.”
Right, Blockbuster Video? Right, linear television? Right, Aaron Jacobson?
Jacobson, who is the CEO of indie game studio Zollpa (“RoboSquad Revolution”), admits he’s one who has “questioned Netflix at every decision they’ve made.” The results? “I’ve always been wrong.”
What may be confusing here is Netflix gaming probably will not look like the Netflix of Gaming. And past streaming attempts to rival Microsoft’s Xbox console or Sony’s PlayStation — looking at you,...

It’s been almost 12 years to the day since Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk unleashed “American Horror Story” on the genre-loving masses. Not many of us queerdo TV fans have stuck around long enough to enjoy the ongoing “American Horror Story: Delicate,” at least judging Season 12 by the series’ earlier viewership numbers.
But even with the show’s spectacularly uneven quality and Murphy’s unfailing ability to drop the ball mid-way through a decent story, the creepy-yet-campy anthology remains an undeniable staple of horror TV and FX offerings. It’s got a smaller fanbase these days, sure. But we’re still thriving — constantly theorizing about how the seasons are interconnected and assembling some of the funniest clip compilations on the internet.
On October 5, 2011, the co-creators and executive producers known for “Nip/Tuck,” “Glee,” and more wacky dramedy classics premiered the first episode of what was retroactively titled “American Horror Story: Murder House.

After a week of calling out “Pose” and “American Horror Story” executive producer Ryan Murphy, Angelica Ross has shared her salary and claimed that Murphy cursed her out after the production team “silenced her.”
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she also reiterates she is done with Hollywood and reveals she is moving to Georgia and going into politics.
The dispute with Murphy happened over a series of T-shirts a crew member was wearing. Ross described the shirts as “racist” and said they contained slogans such as “Build That Wall” and “I Don’t Kneel.”
One day while Ross was trying to focus on her scene, the shirts became too much for her. She left the scene, went into a production van and vowed she wasn’t going to come out until the man took off his shirt or turned it inside out. Producer John J. Gray later told...

Happy 20th anniversary to Hail to the Thief, Radiohead’s most misunderstood album. If you doubt the last part of that sentence, consider the fact that Thom Yorke once described this supremely anxious, stubbornly combative music as being ideal “for shagging.” Our five brainy lads released it in the summer of 2003, two years after Kid A and Amnesiac caused a tectonic shift that changed music forever, as every fan at the time couldn’t wait to remind you. Origami Angel have announced a new mixtape, My Brightest Days, which is due on June 16th. The Washington, D.C.-based two-piece also unveiled their latest single from the project, a pop-punk tune titled “My PG County Summer.” Listen to the song below.
My Brightest Days was written throughout the summer of 2020, during the initial, stay-at-home period of the Covid-19 pandemic. The songs were then recorded during August 2022, and capture the feelings of lost innocence that Origami Angel’s Ryland Heagy and Pat Doherty were musing on.
“My PG County Summer” specifically calls out the juxtaposing cultures that color the atmosphere of America’s capital — Heagy recalls the teachers who once taught him to be grateful to be near such rich history, and then turns his observational flow in the direction of hate-stoking, abortion-protesting “travelers,” who come from all corners of the country to assert their political agendas… sometimes violently,...

Wim Wenders could be the Bob Dylan of European cinema: always around, always the same, always different. Sometimes he’ll arrive in Cannes with a documentary, like 2018’s Pope Francis: A Man of His Word, and sometimes he’ll come with a work of fiction, like his timeless 1984 Palme d’Or winner Paris, Texas. This year, he’s coming with one of each: Anselm, a 3D portrait of artist Anselm Kiefer, and Perfect Days, the story of a Tokyo toilet cleaner. Ironically, Wenders thought he’d have more time on his hands after the pandemic and moving on from his role at the European Film Academy. How wrong he was…

Nigel Kneale, creator of the cult science fiction serial Quatermass, has been commemorated by a brand new set of stamps from his native Isle of Man.
The set of six Kneale Archives postage stamps is available from the Isle of Man Post Office and covers his career right from his beginnings in the theater, and his 1949 anthology Tomato Cain and Other Stories, to his iconic science fiction work, including the dystopian The Year of the Sex Olympics (1968), ghost story The Stone Tape (1972), and horror anthology Beasts (1976).
Naturally, Quatermass looms large (although it’s confined to a single stamp). The influence of the six-part Quatermass Experiment (1953), Quatermass II (1955), and Quatermass and the Pit (1959) – and their Hammer adaptations – can be seen in everything from Doctor Who to Stephen King.

"Starship Troopers" failed to land when it opened in November 1997. Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards were not bankable leads, and audiences expecting a conventional sci-fi epic were thrown off by the film's curious style, which is a mix of televisual soap operas and satirical militarism. Consequently, "Troopers" received a mediocre "C+" from CinemaScore and grossed just $121 million against a $100 million budget (via The Numbers).
Critics were not best pleased, either, especially Stephen Hunter, who attacked "Troopers" as a film that "presupposes" Nazism. Such literal-mindedness misses that Paul Verhoven's film is satirical meta-propaganda, not a cosmic fascist fantasy. The numerous propaganda bulletins make this clear, but the propaganda does not stop there. These bulletins are propaganda within propaganda because "Starship Troopers" can be viewed as one big propaganda piece vetted by the United Citizen Federation, the film's dystopian one-world government.

The official page of the film says that “Tetris” is a biographical drama, and yes, it is, but when you watch it, it’s more than just a memoir; it’s about the game “Tetris.” When you were a kid, for sure, you played this game, on a handheld game console and got addicted to it, but you never asked how it came about or who its author and developer was. “Tetris” confirms our obsession with games, which for the director Jon S. Baird, is poetry that magically creates synchronicity between art and mathematics to form a perfect amusement and recreation that enslaves us. At the beginning of the movie, you may trip because of the hard-core information that is thrown at you to make you aware of the chronological licensing, or should I say? Disney+ will move forward on two new French series, tackling questions of euthanasia with “Lambert v. Lambert,” and intimacy in the social media age with the literary thriller “Les enfants sont rois.”

Whoopi Goldberg has hit out at Fox News host Tucker Carlson over the recent controversy surrounding his handling of Capitol riot footage.
During a Fox News segment, Carlson showed surveillance footage of the 6 January 2021 attack on the US Capitol building which downplayed the violence of the incident, presenting the riot as a peaceful protest.
Carlson claimed that media outlets and Democratic politicians had misled the public about the attack, despite real-time evidence showing rioters pushing past police barricades, smashing windows, threatening lawmakers, and storming the halls of the congressional building.
The presenter said that the “overwhelming” majority of rioters “were not insurrectionists, they were sightseers”.
During an appearance on The View on Tuesday (7 March), Goldberg addressed the controversy surrounding Carlson, comparing his coverage to George Orwell’s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Ever since the printing press was invented, there's been no shortage of instances of books being banned. The reasons for these bans run the gamut from the religious to the political to the moral. Because the standards of decency have changed so much over the centuries, books that were once considered obscene are now socially acceptable, and sometimes, it's the other way around.
While the general intent of banning a book is to prevent readers from engaging with it, it often has the opposite effect. Labeling a book "forbidden" can bring more attention to it. This "Streisand Effect" makes a lot of sense. When the powers that be condemn a piece of media, this only increases the audience's curiosity about why it's so controversial. Not only have bans led to books becoming more popular, but it has also led to them getting the big screen treatment. Hollywood has rarely shied away from capitalizing on controversy,...

"After failing to impress the judges on a singing competition show, a woman must perform degrading acts or return to a slave-like existence."
The woman in question is Abi, played by Jessica Brown Findlay, who later co-starred in the Peacock adaptation of Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World," one of the great dystopian novels. Yet in some ways, Abi functions as more of an ideal for Bing, who gives an impassioned speech in "Fifteen Million Merits" where he refers to Abi and her singing talent as "the one thing I ever came close to anything real about.

When it came to this year’s Super Bowl, Madison Avenue appeared to have hard marching orders: “Insert celebrity here.”
Ben Affleck. Bradley Cooper, Will Ferrell and Anna Faris were among the dozens of A-listers who showed up to hawk Pepsi Zero Sugar, T-Mobile, General Motors and Avocados From Mexico, among other items, in Fox’s telecast of Super Bowl Lvii. The allure of celebrity was so powerful this year that Mars Inc. benched its famous M&Ms spokes-candies in favor of a cartoonish ad led by Maya Rudolph. Famous faces even showed up for serious items such as Dexcom, a glucose monitoring system for diabetics that enlisted Nick Jonas.
“This year, we just wanted to be entertained. We want to forget things,” says Tim Curtis, a partner at WME who oversees celebrity endorsements,. After an era during which consumers have grappled with everything from a nation’s polarized politics to a global pandemic,...

The trailer has debuted for Jessica Woodworth’s sci-fi epic “Luka,” which has its world premiere in the Big Screen Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Films Boutique is handling international sales.
The film is Woodworth’s take on Dino Buzzati’s “The Tartar Steppe,” in which she crafts a fantasy of post-truth lunacy. Geraldine Chaplin plays the twisted General in a drama tinged with the conjured terrors of George Orwell’s “Nineteen Eighty-Four,” and the rapturous brotherly love of Jean Genet’s “Un chant d’amour.”
In the film, Luka, a young and ambitious soldier, embeds himself in Fort Kairos where heroic warriors defend the remains of civilization. His hopes to serve as an elite sniper are crushed when he is assigned to maintenance and must submit to the code of Kairos: obedience, endurance and sacrifice. As he rises through the ranks, Luka finds joy and strength in friendships with Konstantin,...

This story about Roger Deakins first appeared in the Below-the-Line issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Roger Deakins remembers the moment he figured out what he was going to do for a living. It didn’t come as a child in Torquay, a seaside town on the coast of South West England, where he grew up surrounded by movies. “I think there were five or six cinemas within walking distance of where I lived,” he said. “And now there’s only two, which is a shame.”
It didn’t come in his teenage years, even though he gravitated toward film then, too. “I used to go to the cinema a lot, but what I remember most was when I was still at school and I joined a film club,” he said. “They just had a temporary screen and a 16mm projector, and they put up about 20 folding chairs. But they...

Five Oxbridge "superior beings" and one American "barbarian at the gates," to use Terry Gilliam's own words; that was the lineup for "Monty Python's Flying Circus," the comedy troupe that took irreverent aim at the social and class boundaries of stuffy British society and, in their anarchic way, the very format of comedy itself.
For his part, Gilliam was the often-overlooked member of the gang, not only an outsider by nationality and class but also due to his role within the Pythons. As the animator, he worked alone and made far fewer appearances in their sketches, often taking on gurning grotesques that the others didn't really want to play. As a result, he never really had a defining screen persona. While we remember John Cleese and Michael Palin from the Dead Parrot sketch or the Ministry of Silly Walks, and Eric Idle as the insinuating spiv in the Nudge-Nudge routine,...

Evan Peters, alongside Sarah Paulson, has become a staple of the “American Horror Story” franchise to the point that it was jarring to see him not appear in the show’s ninth season, “1984.” Audiences first obsessed over Peters’ presence in the first year of “AHS” as Tate Langdon, a sociopathic teen with a sensitive side, especially when it came to his love for Violet (Taissa Farmiga). In the next three seasons, we would see Peters portray misunderstood characters like inmate Kit Walker in “Asylum,” frat boy-turned-Frankenstein creation Kyle Spencer in “Coven,” and freak show performer Jimmy Darling in “Freak Show.” Tour our photos below to see all of Peters’ “AHS” characters ranked worst to best.

How do we possibly begin to sum up 100 years of the BBC? It often feels like an immutable part of our country, like tea, or motorways, or oxygen. How do you talk about that? While it has changed and grown enormously over the decades, the BBC has long been Britain’s defining cultural force, our foremost way of communicating with the outside world, and with ourselves. It is exactly this omnipresence, however, which has left it at perennial risk of being taken for granted – both by the British public and by those in charge of it.
It wasn’t always this way, of course. The British Broadcasting Company Ltd, when it launched on 18 October 1922, was a different animal. On 14 November, it made its inaugural broadcast, on the day before the general election. The day after, it broadcast the results – the Conservative party retained power, with Labour leapfrogging the liberals to become their main competitors.

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture repainted, every statue & street building renamed, every date altered," writes author George Orwell in his 1949 novel "Nineteen Eighty Four", currently in development with Wiip Studio as a five-part limited TV series, offering a "bold new version" of the original story :
"...as the nation grapples with surveillance, media collusion, government cover-ups, cartel kickbacks, 'racist' slanders and a financially-driven 'Deep State' effortlessly breaking the law, because they are the law, the urgency of Orwell’s masterpiece these days is undeniable..."
First published in 1949, Orwell's novel focuses on 'Oceania', a society ruled by the oligarchical dictatorship of the 'Party'.
Life in the Oceanian province of 'Airstrip One' is a world of perpetual war, pervasive government surveillance and incessant public mind control, accomplished with a political system, administered by a privileged 'Inner Party' elite.
