This Week in Trailers: The Good, The Bad, and Sarah Jessica Parker

3 hours ago | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Maybe it's the holidays, but this was the biggest week for trailers in a long, long time. It's not just the sheer number, although that, too, is a consideration, but there were also a lot of big ticket items that were unveiled this week. We have two trailers for Kick-Ass, swiftly moving to the top of 2010's must-see list, plus films with actual movie stars, although 2009 provided strong evidence that they weren't all that necessary.

Of course, the law of averages tells us we're bound to have a bad trailer in the mix as well, so welcome to the Kevin Smith buddy picture Cop Out with Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis, which has all the markings of a giant disappointment. Also, Sex and the City 2 looks like shit. Conversely, the Karate Kid actually looks pretty decent, so you never can tell.

Week in Review: Best of 2009, New Trailers

25 December 2009 4:13 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

With one more week left in 2009, we started rolling back the clock a bit and reflecting on the year's best and worst. There's more to come, but we have some of the highlights listed below, including your chance to vote for the best movie of the past 12 months.

Beyond that, it's been pretty light. The news has slowed, although curiously, the number of high-quality trailers has really accelerated in the past seven days, including our first look at The Karate Kid remake, which is astoundingly not nearly as bad as we would have thought.

So here are the headlines, and if you celebrate the holidays, then happy holidays. If not, have a good weekend.

Jaden Smith Kicks It Up A Notch in New Karate Kid Movie Trailer (Video)

23 December 2009 11:49 AM, PST | Celebuzz.com | See recent Celebuzz news »

He may get his acting chops from Oscar-nominated superstar, Will Smith, but son Jaden Smith is learning his martial arts movie chops from a kung fu master -- Jackie Chan. (Yes, leave it to Tinsel Town to love a title so much that they conveniently ignore the fact that the film features the Chinese martial art of "kung fu", not the Japanese "karate") Eleven-year-old Jaden plays the title role in the upcoming reboot of "The Karate Kid", the 1980's classic coming-of-kick-age flick starring Ralph Macchio.  To prepare for his role, Jaden trained for several tough months under a Kung Fu instructor, providing »

Trailer Watch: ‘The Karate Kid’ and ‘Sex and the City 2’

23 December 2009 9:45 AM, PST | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

In what has to be some sort of Hollywood record, even more trailers arrived online since we last met … and it’s starting to become a bit of a chore to keep up with all of them. While we’re expecting the latest trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception to hit at anytime, here are two more previews for a couple of buzzed-about 2010 films.   The Karate Kid   Nope, they’re not re-releasing the old 1984 classic starring Ralph Maccio and Pat Morita. Instead, this is the 2010 remake, complete with hip-hop tunes, Will Smith’s kid Jaden, and Jackie Chan as the lovable martial arts mentor. Like in the previous incarnation, this one follows a kid and his mom who move overseas to start a new life (the original had them moving from New Jersey to...

First Trailer for The Karate Kid Remake with HD Links

23 December 2009 8:30 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Once thought to be called The Kung Fu Kid, the remake of The Karate Kid has been unveiled via this first trailer and will retain the name of its inspiration.

Will Smith's son Jaden takes over the title role from Ralph Macchio as a scrawny kid who is taken under the wing of an unlikely mentor, Jackie Chan in place of Pat Morita. The film looks to mix plot elements from the first and second Karate Kid films as Jaden's character learns Karate after having traveled to China and fancied a girl a young local karate fighter already has eyes on.

The trailer is surprisingly familiar with many nods to the original films and far less "lame" than some feared the remake would be. If anything, it will be a vehicle for young Jaden Smith to kick start his acting career and follow in his father's footsteps.

Rate-a-Trailer: Are You Karate Kidding Us?

A new twist on Chinese knockoffs. It's bad enough that China is kicking our collective backside in the global economy, but now some Beijing bullies are messing with Will Smith's son Jaden in this remake of The Karate Kid! Luckily, Jackie Chan (in the Pat Morita role) is there to save America, or something. Did we really need this? No. But does anybody need counterfeits of garish Louis Vuitton bags? Another big no. And yet people buy them. Who are we to judge? Let us know in the comments section if the physical comedy genius of Jackie Chan will make this worth a look in June of 2010. Or does this trailer suddenly make you miss Ralph Macchio? »

No One Sweeps the Leg in the Karate Kid Trailer

23 December 2009 5:10 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Oh, the iconic moment in John G. Avildsen’s 1984 modern classic, The Karate Kid, just before the big, final fight when Martin Kove instructs William Zabka to sweep Daniel-san’s leg.  It’s one of those moments in time that goes down in history like Rosebud or the bridge over the River Kwai exploding.  You won’t find that here in the trailer for The Karate Kid remake, brought to us by Yahoo! Movies.

What you will find is a whole lot of Kung Fu, and you understand fully why the producers had such a hard time choosing a name.  In the end, brand loyalty won out, and The Karate Kid was officially born.

Check out the trailer right here:

All in all, it looks alright.  Jackie Chan is filling the Pat Morita role nicely, although I would be hard pressed to believe Chan would receive a Best Supporting Actor nod at the 2011 Oscars. »

A first look at The Karate Kid - now made in China | Ben Child

23 December 2009 3:58 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

What a confused beast the remake of The Karate Kid looks to be. On the one hand, its producers are clearly keen on channelling the 1984 original's enduring cool by clinging on to that iconic title. On the other, they've decided to set the thing in China, perhaps because this allows them to shoot scenes on the Great Wall and harness the box office potential of a nation of over a billion people.

Yet karate is a Japanese martial art, originally emerging on the Ryukyu Islands, not a Chinese one. The new movie, which stars Jaden Smith in the bullied kid role made famous by Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan as the mentor who teaches him to fight, rightly ought to have been called the Kung Fu Kid. In fact, the last time I heard, it was.

Yet there it is, emblazoned in glorious white on red on the first trailer proper for the film, »

Karate Kid Trailer Online

23 December 2009 3:25 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

For those of us in our early thirties, there's something almost sacred about The Karate Kid - the memorable lines, the perfect casting, that crane kick - and so the though of it being ramade, updated or otherwise profaned makes us feel a little bit sick... that said, some of our trepidation has been allayed with a look at this the first trailer.

Jackie Chan has wisely steered clear of bearing any kind of resemblence to the inimitable Pat Morita and Jaden Smith seems to have the chops if not the most convincing performance skills. There is even the subtlest of glimpses of that famous crane technique (at 1 minute 33 seconds) and a recreation of the scene when Miyagi is trying to catch a fly in chop-sticks.

The story is based around young (perhaps too young wethinks) Dre's relocation to Beijing where he is being bullied by a nasty sect of »

First Karate Kid Trailer

23 December 2009 1:50 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The Karate Kid remake won't head into theaters until next summer, but its first trailer is now online. At one point titled The Kung-Fu Kid (and before even that titled The Karate Kid), the remake has the "kid" (Jaden Smith) and his mother (Taraji P. Henson) move to Beijing instead of Reseda, and kung-fu will be the taught by Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) instead of karate by Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita). Other than that, it seems like the remake isn't trying to stray too far from the original story, aside from having the teacher demonstrate the techniques. The similarity may be why they changed the title back to The Karate Kid, even though there's no karate actually in it. Check out the trailer below.

Brittany Murphy's Uso Tour Appearance, 'Avatar' In 3D And 'Toy Story 3' Finished In Today's Twitter-Wood

22 December 2009 3:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Brittany Murphy and "Avatar" look poised to dominated Twitter-Wood's thoughts this holiday week, even if most of the tweeters are leaving their offices to tweet from home and last-minute shopping expeditions right now. Alyssa Milano retweeted a photo taken when she and Murphy appeared on a Uso tour together, reflecting on the time they spent there. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Banks, Samm Levine and David Spade all had different reactions to "Avatar" in 3D.

You can sort out what they had to say after the jump along with a former "Saved By the Bell" star's denial of drunken behavior, Kevin Smith's response to a tweeter about his wife's Playboy photos and former Karate Kid Ralph Macchio on whether or not he plans on coming back to "Ugly Betty." It's all retweeted in the Twitter-Wood report for December 22, 2009.

'The Karate Kid' Remake Gets a Trailer

22 December 2009 1:30 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

As a ridiculous fan of the original Karate Kid, naturally I was extremely disheartened to learn that Hollywood was going to attempt a remake of the 1984 film about a whiny kid from New Jersey who moves to California and gets his ass kicked a handful of times before learning karate from some wacky old Asian handy man. This new version would star Will Smith's kid Jaden (in the role originally populated by Ralph Maccio) with Jackie Chan taking on Pat Morita's role of mentor and trainer. Ugh, I know, but Yahoo just released the first trailer and I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but ... it doesn't look half bad.

Note: The Yahoo trailer doesn't seem to be working, but you can also watch it by clicking here, or by downloading one of the HD versions available here.

The Karate Kid Trailer

The new trailer for The Karate Kid remake, where Jayden Smith uses nothing but Kung-Fu and not Karate, to try and earn the respect of the Chinese kids that are bullying him because he's hitting on a Chinese girl, has finally arrived. The description is funny because I think kids in China would actually act that way if they saw a black kid hitting on one of their own. Not saying it's right, I'm just saying that it wouldn't surprise me if that's really how it is over there. The trailer shows Jackie doing his version of Miyagi, training Jayden in the way of beating someone up. But instead of washing cars or making Wonton soup as a way of learning Kung-Fu, he has him pick up and take off his jacket a bunch of times. If that's all it takes to learn how to fight then I must be »

First trailer for The Karate Kid remake

22 December 2009 12:05 PM, PST | GordonandtheWhale | See recent GordonandtheWhale news »

Thanks to Yahoo!, we now have our first trailer for The Karate Kid remake, directed by Harald Zwart (Pink Panther 2). Will Smith’s son, Jaden Smith, picks up and revamps the uniform that Ralph Macchio’s Daniel Son once made popular, and as you already know, Jackie Chan’s our new Mr. Miyagi (now called Mr. Han). There’s been a lot of angst over this remake, the main reason being this is one of those classic 80s films that absolutely does not need a remake. The Karate Kid was built around Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. This trailer does make the film seem like it’ll be some good fun though, but I don’t think I can ever view this as a remake. For a while it was going to be called The Kung Fu Kid (which makes sense because Dre learns Kung Fu) – maybe to sway Karate »

Watch This: First Official Trailer for The Karate Kid Remake

Okay, here we go. Sony has debuted the first official trailer for The Karate Kid remake starring Jaden Smith as the kid and Jackie Chan as Mr. Han, the Mr. Miyagi like mentor he meets. Yes, technically I think they're using Kung Fu in this and not Karate, so complain all you want about the title, but I think Sony would rather get complaints than lose money at the box office. Let me be the first to say that honestly this doesn't look that bad. I even just watched the original Karate Kid a few days ago and Jaden looks like the same grumpy kid as Ralph Macchio. While it definitely won't top the original, it could be pretty fun. Enjoy?
