Parents Guide for
Gremlins (1984) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

A gremlin in a trenchcoat flashes Kate in the pub, but it's played for laughs and there's no actual sex or nudity in the film.

A teen is seen changing shirt, bare chest visible.

Violence & Gore

Violence and mayhem throughout. Sometimes blood.

Billy's mom turns the blender on when the gremlin is eating out of it. Splattering green slime everywhere.

Another gremlin is thrown in the microwave and blows up, splattering slime all over the microwave.

A gremlin attacks Billy's mom in the Christmas tree and scratches bloody cuts on her face and head.

Billy decapitates a gremlin with a sword and we see the head burning in the fireplace, but only for a few seconds.

A couple is attacked in their home by a bulldozer and presumably killed.

A woman is killed when her elevating chair malfunctions and catapults her out a window, we see her legs sticking out of the ground after she is flattened on the street.

We hear cars crash after a gremlin tampers with a stoplight.

A police car flips over after a gremlin disconnects the brake.

Gremlins are burned in a movie theatre.

The gremlin leader melts in a part. Most of this part would be intense for young children.

A gremlin chainsaws a radio in half causing it to explode and making a spark make Billy's head bleed.

Billy is shot with a harpoon gun and nearly killed by the Stripe gremlin with a chainsaw.

Billy reaches out for a phone and a gremlin scratches him and makes a cut on his hand.

A man is sticking his hand inside of a cabinet where a gremlin is and soon, you hear biting noises and the man screaming. Then, Billy comes in and sees the man lying on the floor and not moving which means he's obviously dead.

In a video kids are watching in science class, men are showing an example of a rabbit's heart after they cut open the rabbit.

A wreck is mentioned in this movie that is caused by a gremlin.

Profanity

dam#s and he!!s are mostly used in this movie.Sh**t is used, but only once. 14 total profanities are used. And the Godd---it is used. A****le is also used once.

Gremlins smoke, a character gets drunk, Gremlins get drunk

Many, many 'pop-out' moments where the creatures jump out of dark corners and attack the characters. A gremlin's graphic demise by sunlight involves him melting into a pile of slime. Frightening/suspenseful music throughout, the Gremlins theme has a disturbing carnival-like sound to it.

Since this was one of the films responsible for introducing the PG-13 rating, parents should probably consider some of the above content on par with the rating. In the UK the film is rated a 15 for Strong Violence and Horror. Even though the violence is comic and so it the horror it would still scare younger children

Their first form is cute but when they "morph" children will find them frightening

Kate's "speech" some children might find frightening and disturbing (as well as some teens and possibly adults).
