The Alamo Guide
for November 19th, 2009
It’s totally fall, you guys! I know this, because my allergies have exploded with this cold front, it was 40 something degrees last night, And I Get To Eat Turkey Next Thursday! Oh so much turkey will I eat! With extra dressing and gravy. I will be doing this with my biological family, which, if you consider the other options we have at the Alamo, actually sounds pretty boring. While I’ll be way too full falling asleep staring at the football game that I don’t really care about on my grandparents couch, You can be way too full, falling asleep, staring at the Ut vs A&M football game that you probably Do care about at the Alamo Ritz! Or you can be watching any movie at any of our theaters, because our annual tradition still stands. We’ll be your second

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 2

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'. I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!
25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen.

Our Favorite Summers: 1984

Erik Davis ordered me to come up with a new approach to summer movies, and he demanded that the concept be intelligent, engaging, and jam-packed with vowels and consonants. (One out of three isn't bad.) And since I'm a childish movie nerd who had a deep affection for all things nostalgic, my first idea was "Hey, let's have the writers pick their favorite 'movie summer' and write a piece about it." And since my next eleven ideas stunk, he said "Ugh, fine. Do your Favorite Summers thing. But don't forget the vowels."
Nearly all of the Cinematicaleers will be penning their own pieces, but since I like to lead by example (when I'm not leading by guilt), I figured I'd get the ball rolling first. (Special thanks to Box Office Mojo for displaying Old release dates in very handy fashion.) Also, for the sake of this series, let's say "summer" counts as "May through August,

Review: He's Just Not That Into You

Living lives of loud desperation for the sake of your entertainment / enjoyment / enlightenment (a generous assessment on all three counts) are Rachel from Friends, the Mac Guy, Firestarter, Daredevil, and a dozen other familiar faces and names, all of them hell-bent on telling you that if He's Just Not That Into You, all one merely has to do is swap out that target of affection. In a weird way, it's a strategy that the film itself seems to employ: If you don't like what supposed relationship insights we have to offer up across 10 blocks of Baltimore and 130 minutes of running time, just wait -- we all change our tune to make each other happy eventually.
Since this romantic omnibus already has too many characters for its own good, let's go ahead and get their introductions out of the way real quick like. There's the desperate-to-date-and-then-some Ginnifer Goodwin, who is blown

Um, how is this different from X-Men and Heroes? And Firestarter? Crap, Dakota Fanning even looks like Drew Barrymore a bit, doesn’t she?
I’m just wondering. Cuz in almost any other job in the world, if you were to go in to your boss’s office and say, “Look, see that really cool job that other guy did? I wanna do it all over again and pretend it was all my idea,” your boss would laugh you out on your ass. But in Hollywood, this is approvingly called “high concept,” when you can say, “This movie I wanna make is just like that other movie that’s really popular, and we’re not even gonna fake like we don’t know it.”
It’s the “creating an army” part that’s different, isn’t it? Or maybe the part where Dakota Fanning knows they’re gonna die?
