  • Continuity: The lamp is seen standing through the sniper's scope after being knocked over.

  • Continuity: Bullet holes through the wall in the final scene keep changing.

  • Crew or equipment visible: When the detective is leaving Ray's house at night, you can see someone standing in the shot.

  • Continuity: In the opening scene, Ray and Abby's car is driving through a horrible rainstorm. When they suddenly stop to allow Loren's VW Beetle to pass, the exterior shots show no rain.

  • Crew or equipment visible: In the shot where Ray is beginning to bury Marty, as the camera tracks past the car (whose headlights are supposed to be the only source of light), a stage light is briefly visible on the other side of the car. It's cropped out of the video, but is noticeable in the recent re-release.

  • Crew or equipment visible: After Marty tries to attack his wife outside Ray's house, he walks across the lawn to his van. For a split second the camera rig comes into shot on the right hand side of the screen.

  • Incorrectly regarded as goofs: A radio station's call letters begin with W. The boundary in the US between radio/TV call letters beginning with W and those beginning with K was not always the Mississippi River. In the 1980s, Texas still had more than one "W" station.

  • Crew or equipment visible: Reflection of camera crane visible in a phone booth.

  • Continuity: When the detective is sitting at the table in the bar across from Marty (the first time) he lights his cigarette with his lighter and a shot shows his hand putting the lighter on the table. The hand looks like that of a younger man, and the huge ring on the detective's right hand is missing in that shot.

  • Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Abby tells Meurice she thinks Ray killed Marty, Meurice turns back into his apartment, saying, "Well, that's bullshit." His lip movements are clearly mismatched. (This is in the Director's Cut; the original version had Meurice saying, "All right, but I'll tell you right now I'm retiring.")

  • Revealing mistakes: When Private Detective Loren Visser steals Abby's gun, the supposedly unfired shells have clearly visible depressions in the primers and have obviously already been fired.

  • Continuity: When we first see Abby's revolver in her purse, it is a detective-style gun with an enclosed hammer and no cocking lever. For the rest of the movie, it is a standard revolver with a cocking lever - a completely different gun.

  • Revealing mistakes: The box of shells from which Abby dumps three live rounds is clearly labeled "blanks".

  • Audio/visual unsynchronized: Phone continues to ring after Abby picks it up.

  • Revealing mistakes: The morning after Ray buries Marty in the freshly-plowed field, a wide shot reveals tire tracks ahead of Ray's car before he drives off.

  • Continuity: The German shepherd at Ray's house is different than the one at Marty's.

  • Continuity: When Detective (Emmet Walsh) removes the knife from his hand, it is clearly visible that more than half level of the knife is covered with blood, but in the next shot where he pick up his hat, you can see that only the knife tip is covered with blood.

  • Continuity: When Dan Hedaya's character is going to meet M. Emmet Walsh's character to hire him to kill his wife, Hedaya is wearing a ruby pinkie ring on his right hand. Minutes later, when they are sitting in Walsh's VW, Hedaya is wearing a ring with a diamond horseshoe.

  • Continuity: After Marty pukes up blood on Ray's shirt, the amount and color of the blood keeps changing.

  • Continuity: The amount of blood on Loren's glove changes from before he pulls out the knife, and after he's shot and lying on the floor.

  • Plot holes: Maybe the writers were showing the stupidity of murderers, but did Ray think no one would notice his tire tracks through the plowed field, and the newly filled in hole he dug for Marty's body?
