New 'Hot Tub Time Machine' trailer: Let's take your temperature

18 December 2009 9:30 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

After seeing the latest trailer for next March's Hot Tub Time Machine — in which John Cusack, Rob CorddryThe Office's Craig Robinson and Greek's Clark Duke are transported back to 1986 — are you in or are you out? I'm in: Partly because I want to see what made Cusack sign on for this movie, partly because of Robinson. "Excuse me, miss. What color is Michael Jackson?" he asks, trying to confirm what decade they're in. "Black," she answers, and he runs away screaming. I just hope they find more clever/subtle ways to show us it's the '80s »

The Brand Manager: Dick Wolf's Family of Crime Dramas Took Advance Planning

7 December 2009 12:06 PM, PST | TVGuide.com - Features | See recent TVGuide - Features news »

Former advertising executive Dick Wolf got his start in television writing for shows like Hill Street Blues and Miami Vice. But his greatest accomplishment is Law & Order, which mastered the TV-show-as-brand concept by cornering the market on cops-and-courts procedurals. (This year it ties Gunsmoke's record for longest-running scripted television program.) L&O laid the groundwork for two successor series: Law & Order: Svu and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Wolf, one of the influential television industry players interviewed for TVGuide.com's Best of the Decade section, talked with us about the germ of the idea that led to his gritty TV empire. Tina Fey outs herself as an awards nut like us on '30 Rock'

6 December 2009 6:18 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Don't miss last week's episode of "30 Rock" titled "Dealbreakers Talk Show #0001" (still posted at the show's website here and Hulu here) in which this show's creator-producer-star-writer Tina Fey shares the height (depth?) of her awards mania. She gives the subplot to Tracy, actually, but, of course, we assume that it springs from her own private trophy obsession that she's shared with us sympathetic Derbyites in the past.(Thank you, Tina -- we do understand and cheer you on.) In this episode, Tracy (Tracy Jordan) buys an old piece of jewelry allegedly once created by Philip Michael Thomas when he was still a hot star on TV's "Miami Vice" (1984-89) and dreamed of winning the »

Forgotten Films: A Boy and His Dog

26 November 2009 12:09 PM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Forgotten Films [1] is a semi-regular feature on Film Junk where we explore interesting movies that have fallen off the radar or slipped through the cracks over the years. With all the post-apocalyptic movies that have been coming out lately, I thought it would be a good time to look back at one of the lesser known classics of the genre, L.Q. Jones' A Boy and His Dog. Based on the novella by Harlan Ellison, the movie takes place in the year 2024, after not one but two additional world wars have been initiated by humanity -- the latter of which leaves the Earth devastated by nuclear missiles. As a result, a large part of the movie presents a familiar desert wasteland setting that has come to be associated with post-apocalyptic tales over the years. A young, pre-Miami Vice Don Johnson stars as Vic, an 18-year-old nomad who lost his »

Gems of the 1980's: Susan Seidelman Remembers Desperately Seeking Susan

22 November 2009 8:01 PM, PST | The Hollywood Interview | See recent The Hollywood Interview news »

(Filmmaker Susan Seidelman, above.)

by Jon Zelazny

In the early 80’s NYC cultural lull between Patti Smith’s retirement and Jay McInerney’s breakout, Nyu film school graduate Susan Seidelman did the scrappy shoestring indie film thing, resulting in her acclaimed feature debut Smithereens (1982).

Best known for her hit sophomore effort, Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), Seidelman continues to direct movies and TV shows featuring female protagonists… including the pilot for “Sex and the City” and her Oscar nominated short film The Dutch Master (1994), about a shy dental technician who ventures “into” a museum painting for flights of erotic fantasy.

Susan Seidelman: My husband Jonathan Brett—who co-wrote and produced The Dutch Master—and I had committed to living in Paris for a year because I was set to direct a feature for Polygram, a company that unfortunately went bankrupt. So we were kind of in a funk over there, and »

Exclusive Interview: Dean Stockwell (Battlestar Galactica: The Plan)

27 October 2009 10:54 PM, PDT | TVStar | See recent TVStar news »

Humans, to John Cavil (Dean Stockwell), are just a bunch of cockroaches waiting to be squashed and if he -- or better phrased it -- has his way, mankind will be crushed by their very own creation, the Cylons. Cavil, of course, is a Cylon, and fans of Battlestar Galactica glimpsed the always-sardonic Cavil and several other Cavil models in action over the course of a dozen-plus episodes of the show. Now, the Cavils are back in the new direct-to-dvd movie Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, which fills in the blanks about the Cylons' infamous plot and reveals the hows/whats/whys of several popular characters' disturbing actions. In fact, two of the Cavils -- John and Brother Cavil -- are the central figures in The Plan, which stars Dean Stockwell as the Cavils, was directed by former Battlestar Galactica regular Edward James Olmos, and is out Oct. 27 on DVD. Is The White Shadow Coming Back To TV?

27 October 2009 2:02 AM, PDT | The Humor Mill | See recent The Humor Mill news »

Our sources have revealed to us that there is going to be a new version of the very short lived but popular 1978 dramatic series The White Shadow coming to television, and with a new name.

In case you are not familiar with the series The White Shadow, it starred Ken Howard as Ken Reeves, a white former NBA professional who retired from the pro game and got a job as a basketball coach in a predominantly black inner-city high school. The series developed into how a white coach tried to teach his players about life, and how to deal with real life issues.

Anyway, we hear the new series is co-executive produced, written by and directed by actor Larry B. Scott (of Revenge Of The Nerds fame and The Karate Kid fame), with the show to be titled My New Life. The show is still rounding out the new cast »

Fred Dekker Revisits The Night of the Creeps!

16 October 2009 7:44 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The most elusive cult creeper ever made finally makes its way to DVD and Blu-ray October 27th!

Night of the Creeps has become one of the most sought after late night cult creepers ever made. After hitting the video store circuit in the mid-80s on VHS tape (and VHS alone), the film quickly disappeared. It would later crawl out from late night cable television on that rare occasion, like some long dormant creature hungry for flesh. It's never been re-released on any medium, and has only made a handful of appearances at the local midnight theater. Despite that fact, Fred Dekker's amazing 1986 ode to aliens, zombies, and high school romps has developed a rabid following over the years. Revolving around squirmy black leeches that possess a town full of teenagers and treats them like puppets on prom night, it's a hard film to shake. And the fact that »

Do The Mario, Remember Captain Lou Albano

14 October 2009 12:06 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The New York Daily News just reported that Captain Lou Albano -- permanent fixture of the wrestling world, father figure to Girls who Just Wanna Have Fun, and most importantly, the human incarnation of Mario (Super Mario Bros. Super Show) -- has warped to the great World 8 in the sky. He was 76. Albano, whose repeated self-tagline was "often imitated, never duplicated," brought beloved video game character and plumber to life for Nintendo product enthusiasts the world over. He also appeared in several films, and a few episodes of Miami Vice. Captain Lou was inducted in the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Hame in 1996. In 2008, his 75th birthday party at a Yonkers restaurant turned into a "drunken battle royale". At Reject HQ, we're paying homage to Captain Lou today in three ways: 1) another, more teary Super Mario Brothers Super Show marathon (interestingly enough, Dr. Abaius blasted through these a few weeks ago), 2) several rounds of co-ed string bikini »

For pro-wrestling fans of a certain age, Captain Lou Albano was a larger-than-life figure who helped turn what was once a low-rent, cable-access sport into a pop-culture phenomenon. The World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Famer died on Wednesday morning (October 14) at the age of 76, according to the WWE and Wrestler's Rescue, an organization that helps raise money for retired wrestlers' health care.

Wrestler's Rescue reported that Albano had been in hospice care earlier this week, but no cause of death has been revealed.

Born Louis Vincent Albano on July 29, 1933, in Mount Vernon, New York, the former football player and bouncer entered the wrestling game in the late 1950s. His four-decade wrestling career kicked off when he created the tag team known as the Sicilians, playing a »

Green Hornet costume revealed plus cast gossip and bomb drama

1 October 2009 6:44 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Various pieces of new information on the superhero movie Green Hornet, starring Seth Rogen, are hitting the internet.

We have our first glimpse of the costume, seen here in this low-quality set picture which shows what appears to be a stuntman in a green mask, hat and waistcoat/vest. The image has appeared on several sites and seems to be taken from video footage on Splashnews.

Among the cast is Edward James Olmos, who was the enigmatic cop Gaff in Blade Runner. He also appeared in 80s show Miami Vice and played Commander/Admiral William Adama in the recent TV reimagining of Battlestar Galactica.

In Green Hornet, Olmos portrays a reporter called Michael Axford who is trying to unmask the crimefighter.

He told the La Times: "It's quite a fun journey. It's my first time doing this kind of a movie. Blade Runner is the only thing that comes close to this. »

From the Files of Fangoria: Never Call A Wolfen a Werewolf

From the Files of Fangoria is a regular feature with observations on content discovered during the process of digitally archiving 30 years of press releases and photos received by Fangoria and previously kept in storage.

It’s time to go back into the files, kids, back to old New York.  Today’s file is one that is so “old-school” New York it mugged me as soon as I opened the filing cabinet.   Director Michael Wadleigh’s, Wolfen reminds us all that Manhattan was purchased from the Native Americans for a few lousy beads, and in 1981 a three bedroom in the East Village would run you 10 bucks a month.  Staring Albert Finney, honestly my favorite actor of late 70’s and early 80’s, Wolfen is a horror film as prime as river view real estate.

When a prominent land developer turns up brutally murdered in Battery Park, the full investigative power of Finney »

Interview: Matt Frewer on 'Eureka', 'Alice' and Acting to the Max

17 September 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Canadian actor Matt Frewer is probably best known for portraying that icon of 1980s computer animation and music videos, Max Headroom. Headroom's jerks and stutters are but a small sample of this talented and versatile actor's work, though.

On the big screen Frewer's credits go back to Franc Roddam's The Lords of Discipline (1983) and include such diverse material as Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Frankie and Alice (with Halle Barry), Uwe Boll's Darfur and two films for director Zack Snyder: Dawn of the Dead and Watchmen.

Frewer has also portrayed Sherlock Holmes in several television movies and appeared in a long list of TV series. He was a regular on Doctor, Doctor, CBC’s Intelligence and Psi Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal (for which he also wrote a script). He has lent his distinctive voice to characters in animated adventures of The Incredible Hulk, »

Edward James Olmos Joins ‘The Green Hornet’

10 August 2009 10:15 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Even though he didn’t divulge exactly what character he’s going to be playing or very many other details, everyone’s favorite Admiral Edward James Olmos did say he’s joining the cast of the Seth Rogen starrer The Green Hornet. During an appearance this past weekend at Wizard World in Chicago, the Battlestar Galactica star and The Plan director said that he’s definitely in the film — as told to the folks at Hollywood Snitch, who were on-hand for the event.

According to Olmos, he was leaving the convention and pretty much heading to the set to start work — or that’s the way he made it sound at least. Said the actor/director: “I’m on my way to do The Green Hornet. It’ll be a lot of fun with Seth [Rogen], Nicolas Cage and Cameron Diaz.”

That’s just about as vague as you can get and still be information. »

Yeeee...Haw!

Hot on the heels of Lindsay Lohan tweeting about her being officially added to Robert Rodriguez’s Machete, news of the film’s entire cast broke.

Holy plop. I thought The Expendables looked good…

The big-screen production of the faux Grindhouse trailer will star Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson and Jeff Fahey with Robert Rodriguez’s protege, Ethan Maniquis, joining him in the director’s chair.

Last we heard, Seagal was in negations for a fat wad of cash so it looks like his needs were met. Seagal may be using Machete as a resurgence tool. Will Machete do for Seagal what Kill Bill did for David Carradine? Elevate his fame temporarily until he’s chocked in closet during a weird sex act?

Robert De Niro being included isn’t a shock seeing as the respected actor has »
