DVD Review: Family Guy’s Something, Something, Something Dark Side (DVD)

The long awaited sequel to Family Guy’s first Star Wars parody, Blue Harvest, has finally arrived on DVD and Blu-ray. Something, Something Dark Side, is the crew’s hilarious redux of Empire Strikes Back. First off I must point out the show wastes no time in giving some kind of pop culture reference to insult or make you smile. While watching Aaron Sorkin’s new show “The Kitchen” featuring people walking and talking intelligently throughout a kitchen, The Griffin’s are struck with another power outage leaving Peter with one thing to do, tell the next story in the original Star Wars trilogy.
Assuming that the viewer is already familiar with the film’s plot, the opening crawl instead goes into detail about how 20th Century Fox made Star Wars unprofitable (foreseeing it a failure) to other companies by letting George Lucas keep all merchandising rights to it and

The second installment of the hilariously funny Family Guy/Star Wars parody earns its Blu-ray colors. Ok, so if you are a Family Guy and Star Wars fan and were born somewhere between the years 1972 and 1977, this straight to DVD and Blu-ray release will make you spit your coffee or coke or whatever you are drinking out of your nose (hot coffee doesn.t feel so good, but I was watching it at 4:30 in the a.m. trying to wake up). Normal people will enjoy, too. Keep up, there are multiple roles within roles here. The electricity goes out as happened in the first one (Blue Harvest), and Peter starts to tell the family The Empire Strikes

Seth MacFarlane On The "Family Guy" "Star Wars" Parody

Seth MacFarlane, 36, created "Family Guy," Fox's animated sitcom, which this year became the first cartoon series nominated for a prime-time Emmy since "The Flintstones" in 1961. Fox just released the DVD "Family Guy: Something, Something, Something Dark Side," a follow-up to the 2007 "Blue Harvest" episode that spoofed the "Star Wars" franchise.
Why do an extended "Star Wars" parody?
Everybody knows "Star Wars" -- at least, everybody in our audience. And Lucasfilm is probably the only company out there right now that is progressive enough to allow this. Certainly we would have a laugh doing this with "Indiana Jones" or "Wrath of Khan." But I can't imagine in a billion years that Paramount would give us permission.

With Christmas less than 72 hours away, it looks like the studios are putting out quite a few last-minute gift ideas for you to snatch just in time to throw under the tree. This week’s big releases include District 9, (500) Days of Summer, and the second Family Guy Star Wars Special: Something Something Something Dark Side.
Of these releases, we are all pretty excited about the new Family Guy DVD this week. It’s the sequel to 2007’s Blue Harvest Star Wars special. This time, Seth McFarlane and his team spoof the events of The Empire Strikes Back. This special is never-before-seen, and won’t get airtime until mid-March.
Check out this week’s releases:
Movies
District 9 ~ Sharlto Copley, David James, Jason Cope (DVD and Blu-ray)
(500) Days of Summer ~ Zooey Deschanel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (DVD and Blu-ray)

Family Guy Moving From Star Wars Spoofs To… Indiana Jones, Back to the Future and Star Trek?

Something, Something, Something Darkside is the Family Guy spoof of The Empire Strikes Back, a sequel to their first Star Wars parody Blue Harvest. It hits DVD and Blu-ray next week and, of course, that means there's been some launch parties and promo events and all that kind of PR silliness. Stopped on the red carpet of one event, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane was asked if his tribute toons would extend to funny-business versions of the prequel trilogy. It seems like even he could smell the badness on Clones and Menace:
I'm not as well-versed on the newer movies as much as I am on the old ones. I was a kid when the old ones came out, so they hold a special place in my heart.
So, what would follow on from the Star Wars spoofs? How about Back to the Future, Star Trek or Indiana Jones?
At least,

Family Guy presents: Something Something Something Darkside (Sssds) is the follow up to the hugely successful Blue Harvest hour long that was released last year, Blue Harvest was a parody of A New Hope and Sssds is of course parodying The Empire Strikes Back.
I love everything Family Guy and laugh more at it than I do at most other comedy TV shows I watch, the problem I have with it though is that some of the jokes are aimed at the American audience so us Brits will sit in silence whilst State-side they are chuckling away. This of course can’t be avoided but it does make it difficult to fully appreciate the series and this Family Guy hour long in particular to its full.
Never-the-less Sssds is a great example of controversial humour, excellent animation and a obvious passion towards the Star Wars ethos which is only slightly

Following up from their previous Star Wars parody / homage / love letter, Blue Harvest, which so expertly poked the lightsaber of fun at A New Hope, those wonderful people over in Quahog have done it again with Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Darkside. So called because of the universally acknowledged truth that the recipe for great dialogue is "Something, something, something, dark side. Something, something, something, complete", you can expect robotic camels, golden letters streaming through space and a baby dressed up as Darth Vader in this special hour long episode due out on December 28.Check out this extraordinarily fanastically out-of-this-world exclusive below.

If you're a fan of Family Guy, then I'm sure you're fully aware that the animated television show is about to put out their second Star Wars spoof, titled Family Guy: Something, Something, Something Dark Side, on DVD and Blu-ray on December 22nd. This time around they'll be spoofing Empire Strikes Back with another hour-long moviesode, and then next year they plan to put out a final one that spoofs Return of the Jedi. The first moviesode, of course, was titled Blue Harvest and spoofed Episode IV: A New Hope. According to a chat with The La Times, Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane confirmed that he's pretty much stopping at Jedi when it comes to these Star Wars spoofs, saying, "I'm not as well-versed on the newer movies as much as I am on the old ones. I was a kid when the old ones came out, so they

Remember last year's Family Guy special "Blue Harvest"? It parodied Star Wars Episode 4 "A New Hope".
Well, the Family Guy parody team is back and they're taking on Episode 5 " Empire Strikes Back" with Family Guy: Something, Something, Something Dark Side. I didn't know this, but apparently Lucasfilm has given permission to Family Guy to parody the Star Wars movies, from music to script to sound effects.
Something, Something, Something Dark Side will actually be released on iTunes, DVD and Blu-Ray in Canada and the Us on December 22nd. We're hoping to have a review for you of the DVD, so stay tuned.
Here's a short description of the special Family Guy episode, along with a trailer, which you can view below.
The saga continues as Luke (Chris), Leia (Lois), Han Solo (Peter) and Chewbacca (Brian) have evaded the dreaded Imperial Starfleet led by the cunning, conniving and curiously short

The Dark Side came to Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane's house Saturday night in the form of both the worst weather Los Angeles has seen in years and the DVD release party for the Empire Strikes Back parody, Something Something Something Dark Side.
The follow-up to the successful Star Wars: Episode IV -- "A New Hope" spoof, Blue Harvest, Dark Side follows the exploits of Luke Skywalker (Chris Griffin, voiced by Seth Green), Han Solo (the MacFarlane-voiced Peter Griffin -- who insists on a new Rebel Alliance code name: Carlos Spicy Wiener) and their heroic friends as they flee the pursuing Imperial Fleet and Darth Vader (Stewie, also MacFarlane).
To celebrate the DVD's December 22 release, MacFarlane hosted a star (wars) studded Christmas party at his estate in the upper reaches of Beverly Hills. Reporters were rounded up, blind-folded and transported via unmarked black helicopters to MacFarlane's home to

Something Something Darkside (Ssds) is the sequel to last years Blue Harvest, in which the Family Guy cast is placed into the most popular film franchise of all time, Star Wars. What’s amazing about these parody’s is that they’re completely licensed by Lucasfilm and include everything from the original sound effects, to the original score, and retell the stories almost exactly as the happened in the film, but of course with a Family Guy twist. Even more amazing is that it actually works because of the obvious care and love that has gone into both of these one hour specials. Of course Ssds is a retelling of The Empire Strikes Back, my favorite Star Wars film, and in my top 3 favorite movies of all time.
Like Blue Harvest, Ssds starts out with a power outage forcing Peter to tell his family the second part of the Star Wars saga.

David Lynch's Funny Tale of Meeting George Lucas and Rejecting Return of the Jedi

Fora.tv recently posted an interview with David Lynch at the Hudson Union Society. The 63-year-old creator of Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and Twin Peaks took time to talk a little about his experience meeting George Lucas, who offered him the chance to direct Return of the Jedi.
Lynch amused the audience by saying he had "next-door to zero interest" in the project, but he thought he should at least meet with Lucas. He then described the elaborate process of simply getting to Lucas.
It was incredible. I had to go to this building in La first and get a special credit card, and I had to get special keys; a letter came, and a map.
Finally, after taking a flight and driving a rental car to some building, he met with Lucas in an office.
Now, right about in this time, I started getting a little bit of a headache.

A short time ago, in a writer's room not so far away, Seth MacFarlane & Co. began work on their Star Wars parody follow-up, Something, Something, Something Dark Side. (Available on DVD and Blu-ray Dec. 22.) And now, in your own room, you can view a trailer for the episode online.
During a conversation a few weeks ago, MacFarlane told EW that the episode's plot is fairly faithful to Empire Strikes Back—that is, if you don't count the inclusion of the show's patented cut-away gags. And, based on the trailer, there seems to be plenty of 'em. (My personal fave: Hoth's

Hard to believe it has been over 2 years since Family Guy aired it’s first Star Wars special, “Blue Harvest.” And now, we’re less than a month away from the highly anticipated follow-up special, “Something Something Something Dark Side.” The specials were originally set to air consecutively each year, but due to the popularity of the first, Fox decided to milk this cow for all it was worth and delay the release until now.
Last we left our heroes, Chris had destroyed the Death Star with the help of Han, thwarting Stewie’s plan to take out the rebel alliance, all while Lois and Chris grew closer together, not knowing their true relationship. Strange how this plot seems familiar.
In the next special, we of course get a direct parody of The Empire Strikes Back, with Hoth, Jon Benjamin as Yoda, and even the evil chicken as Boba Fett.

Big giant robot “camels”? Peter Griffin’s archnemesis the Chicken as Boba Fett? Stewie Griffin as Darth Vadar? Yup, it’s another installment of Family Guy does Star Wars. The sequel to the hit “Blue Harvest” is the lazily titled “Something Something Something Dark Side”, which I guess is pretty much all you need to know about the movie. It’s a feature-length (well, 44-minutes, anyway) parody of “The Empire Strikes Back”, complete with random asides, inside jokes for fans of the show, good old fashion politically incorrect gags, and some very nice, slick animation. 20th Century Fox releases the movie on DVD and Blu-ray December 22, 2009, just in time for the Family Guy fan in your family. Featuring the voices of Seth MacFarlane, Alex Borstein, Seth Green, and Mila Kunis.

After the success of Family Guy's 2007's Star Wars spoof, Blue Harvest, Seth MacFarlane and his writers decided to parody Empire Strikes Back. The result? Something, Something, Something Dark Side, an hour-long episode that will be available on DVD and Blu-ray Dec. 22. (In this photo, Stewie Griffin reprises his role as Darth Vader.) Even though MacFarlane & Co., had experience parodying the franchise, the Family Guy creator still said it was still a challenge the second time around. "It’s a lot of work, and it’s mainly because of what the movie was, and how visually impressive the movie was,

Family Guy’s Something Something Something Darkside Trailer: The Empire Strikes Back Spoof

So here's the thing: Star Wars spoofs are basically the most obvious and dated thing imaginable, but I actually kinda liked Fanboys. Go figure. That still doesn't make me any more interested in another Family Guy Star Wars special, but I know there are a lot of people out there looking forward to this. The first Family Guy Star Wars special Blue Harvest was such a huge hit that Fox decided to push the release date for the sequel back a bit and release it on DVD before it airs on TV (a practice becoming more and more common nowadays).
It's called Something Something Something Darkside, and it parodies the events from The Empire Strikes Back. A trailer has arrived on Apple.com [1], which makes it like... official, or something. I'm sure you know what you're in for. Are you a Family Guy fan? Is this something you plan on checking out?

About a week or so ago I posted a teaser trailer for “Something, Something, Something, Darkside”, which is Family Guy’s newest spoof of the Star Wars Trilogy, this time lampooning the happenings of Empire Strikes Back.
I lot of you were happy to see Family Guy doing a follow-up to their hilarious 2007 Star Wars parody, “Blue Harvest”, but thought that the teaser trailer was a bit disappointing in terms of laugh out loud moments.
Well I’m happy to report that there is now a full trailer for “Something, Something, Something Darkside”, and it really does bring the laughs.
What was missing from the teaser trailer that is included here are those sly, knowing little winks that Family Guy provides on just about any topic imaginable. Of course, there is plenty of raunchy humor as well (never fear, my low-brow friends), along with plenty of Family Guy inside jokes.

This is a post about Family Guy’s “Something, Something, Something Dark Side” trailer, but I couldn’t fit the whole title in the subject line. I hope you’ll forgive me.
The movie is Family Guy’s humorous take on Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back after their success with Episode IV parody titled “Blue Harvest.” By the way, the title comes from this clip in the “Barely Legal” episode (season 5) where the Emperor finds the formula for great Star Wars dialogue. The trailer is funny, but seems to be a lot of recycled jokes from previous seasons.
Official synopsis:
The saga continues as Luke (Chris), Leia (Lois), Han Solo (Peter) and Chewbacca (Brian) have evaded the dreaded Imperial Starfleet led by the cunning, conniving and curiously short evil lord Darth Vader (Stewie), setting up a new secret base on the remote ice world of Hoth.

An extended trailer for the next Family Guy Star Wars special has arrived online over at Apple and iTunes (watch it after the jump). Titled Something, Something, Something Dark Side, this time the animated sitcom is aiming their lightsabers at Empire Strikes Back. Featuring large camel robots who hurt their knees, annoying high-pitched princesses and a giant chicken dressed as Boba Fett, fans should expect the same sorta hilarious shtick that came out of Family Guy's first Star Wars spoof, Blue Harvest (though some feel the Robot Chicken Star Wars episodes one-upped them considerably, but that's a topic for a different day).
Because of the popularity of the first special, 20th Century Fox is pimping out the follow-up pretty hard. It's due to hit DVD and Blu-ray on December 22nd, and I imagine they'll actually air it on television at some point in 2010. A spoof of Return of the Jedi,
