Welcome back to the Grid, user. Disney is finally following up their cult franchise with a new entry, Tron: Ares. While the new entry in the series does not seemingly feature the Flynn family, at least for now, their legacy will be put into further question as a sophisticated program escapes from the game and ventures into our world. Jared Leto, who had a big swing and a miss with his last franchise attempt, Morbius, is heading up the cast for this continuation. Disney recently unveiled details of Tron: Ares‘ release at last week’s CinemaCon.
Cbr.com has reported on an on-set video taken during a night shoot on the production. The video was posted to social media and seems to show a scene that takes place in a city street with cars stalled in the middle of the road. Jared Leto is seen in full view in his character’s costume.

When Tron first appeared in 1982, it became one of the most popular sci-fi films of the era and is now considered a cult classic. A sequel, Tron: Legacy, was released in 2010 and received mixed reviews, but that did not stop Disney from producing yet another sequel. Tron: Ares is set to be the next installment in the series and will serve as a standalone sequel to the two previous movies. Production began in January 2024 and Disney has now confirmed the film’s official theatrical release date, which is going to happen on October 10, 2025!
Plans for a sequel started emerging back in 2010 after Legacy, but several ideas and projects were scrapped along the way and the sequel seemed to be stuck in developmental hell. In 2022, it was confirmed that the movie was still happening and production was set to begin in 2023, but was initially postponed indefinitely due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Disney has announced a slew of changes to its upcoming release calendar, firming up the studio's theatrical slate for 2025 and 2026. This includes the return of "Star Wars" to the big screen, a big live-action remake, and the continuation of Pixar's biggest franchise. It's going to be a busy couple of years ahead. Let's go over what we can expect.
First up, "The Mandalorian & Grogu" is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026. This had previously been listed as an untitled "Star Wars" movie. Now, we know it's Jon Favreau's movie, which will take the world of "The Mandalorian" from Disney+ to the silver screen. It will be the first "Star Wars" movie to hit theaters since "The Rise of Skywalker" concluded the sequel trilogy back in 2019.

In great news for fans of Baby Yoda, Buzz and Woody, and Disney princesses (as well as Disney shareholders), Disney announced a blockbuster slate of films set for release in 2026.
First up, on May 22, 2026, is “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” a feature expansion of the Emmy Award-winning “The Mandalorian” series that introduced the world to Baby Yoda. No word yet on whether star Pedro Pascal will appear as the title character as he’s done in the streaming series. Jon Favreau is aboard as director.
Next, on June 19, 2026, is “Toy Story 5.” Little is also known about that project but Disney boss Bob Iger revealed in 2023 that another installment of the Oscar-winning franchise was en route.
Finally, on July 10, 2026, Disney will release a live-action version of “Moana” with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. This is not to be confused with an animated “Moana” sequel that Disney has set for release later this year.

It’s going to take a live action version of “Moana” a little longer to swim to shore than Disney first expected. The film, originally slated to open in 2025, has been pushed back to July 10, 2026.
That news came as part of a deluge of Disney release date announcements and shifting debuts. The studio revealed that its upcoming “Star Wars” movie, “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” as well as “Toy Story 5,” will hit theaters in 2026, giving Disney a formidable collection of potential blockbusters.

Woody and Buzz have a date to return to theaters. Disney will release Pixar’s Toy Story 5 on June 19, 2026, the studio announced Friday.
Disney CEO Bob Iger first announced Toy Story 5 in February 2023, with the sequel an attempt to return to form for the franchise after the disappointing performance of the 2022 spinoff, Lightyear, which voice starred Chris Evans. Toy Story has spanned four mainline films dating back to 1995, with the most recent installment topping $1 billion at the box office in 2019. The features have voice starred Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear.
Toy Story 5‘s date with theaters was among a slew of changes and additions made to the Disney release calendar. The studio also pushing Dwayne Johnson’s live-action remake of Moana by a year to July 10, 2026 (it was previously slated for from June 27, 2025). For every Prey or Blade Runner 2049 there are a dozen uninspired retreads of beloved old sci-fi franchises. So a Matrix reboot may not be the best news
Somewhere over the digital horizon, down the rabbit hole and straight on til morning, a new Matrix episode is brewing. After handing us three deeply average (at best) sequels to the majestic original 1999 film, studio Warner Bros has decided to hand the keys of the Nebuchadnezzar to Drew Goddard, whose writing credits include The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods, and Cloverfield. It’s probably a good idea, because the series’ creators, Lana and Lilly Wachowski, have clearly run out of ideas if 2021’s completely superfluous The Matrix Resurrections is anything to go by.
Resurrections joined the ranks of belated sequels to science fiction and fantasy totems that never quite live up to the standards of the original, yet somehow still keep coming.

One day after Bob Iger faced questions about Disney’s competitive position vs. Universal in the Orlando theme park game, there came more information today about a significant expansion of Walt Disney World.
Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World site portfolio executive, said the company’s Orlando resort is undergoing “probably the largest expansion ever at Magic Kingdom,” according to a piece by CNN.
Dubbed “Beyond Big Thunder,” the project is so named because it will expand the park into a swampy, wooded area behind the current Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at one corner of the property. See photo below.

Today was the Disney annual shareholder meeting. One of the more odd claims that Disney CEO Bob Iger made involved a question regarding Universal Orlando’s upcoming Epic Universe theme park.
Epic Universe will open in 2025, and Disney has not made many announcements for Walt Disney World outside of rethemes, stage shows, and odd upcoming attractions like Smellephants on Parade.
During the meeting, a question was posed to Iger about the upcoming competition.
With Epic Universe opening up in Orlando in 2025, why hasn’t Disney prepared anything or placed more than just a handful of attractions in the pipeline to be ready for this in 2025 at Walt Disney World?
Iger responded by claiming that Disney had known about Epic Universe for years, and that its expansions, going back seven years, were in response to it.
Iger said, “Thank you very much for your question but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

After Disney declared victory in its proxy battle with activist investor Nelson Peltz, CEO Bob Iger went on a theme-park offensive during the company’s annual shareholder meeting.
Delivering scripted video remarks from a perch overlooking Disneyland, Iger extolled the parks as a key strategic area of focus and offered a brief first look (see below) at the “possible” new Avatar-themed area at the Anaheim park. Pandora – The World of Avatar, has been up and running at Disney World in Florida for years and Iger said it is the company’s “intention” to make it a new feature of Disneyland. “We’re thrilled about many potential new stories that our guests could experience in Walt’s original theme park, including the opportunity to embark on all-new Avatar adventures with a visit to the world of Pandora,” he said.

The 2010 science fiction action film directed by Joseph Kosinski, Tron: Legacy, was a box office hit. Starring Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges, and Olivia Wilde, the film is a direct sequel to Tron (1982), and is directed by Steven Lisberger. Made 28 years after the first movie, Tron: Legacy made up in visuals and sound what it lacked in story. The movie was also nominated for an Oscar that year in the Best Sound Editing category, but lost to Richard King for Inception.

We've known that Tron: Ares, Aka the third movie set on the Grid following the original and 2010's Tron: Legacy, has been shooting since January. Joachim Rønning is in the director's chair and the first look at Jared Leto suited up as the title character is online — see it lower down the page.
Ares follows Leto's character, who is dispatched from the digital world into our own on a vital mission, leading to humanity's initial encounter with AI beings (which does make us wonder what happened to Olivia Wilde's Quorra from Legacy).
Alongside Leto, the cast also includes Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Gillian Anderson.

We are officially in a bold, new future, folks. No, I'm not talking about how it feels like we're just one misguided billionaire's whims away from actually entering the grid and ending up in some dystopian era where we're literally living through the plot of "Tron" and its follow-up, "Tron: Legacy." I'm referring to the fact that legacy sequels to legacy sequels are now in vogue and here to stay for good. But you can't argue with what the people want and what they want is as simple as it gets: more Daft Punk.
After years and years of viewers demanding a third movie in the "Tron" franchise, Disney is making that wish into a reality. It's been a little over a year since we first found out that the project had been officially green-lit and would proceed under the title "Tron: Ares." Jared Leto took to Instagram on Thursday to unveil a first look at Tron: Ares, the latest installment in the Tron franchise now shooting in Vancouver.
Tron: Ares stars Leto as Ares, a computer program sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission to introduce artificial intelligence beings to humans.
The Disney tentpole also stars Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Gillian Anderson.
Production on Tron: Ares, which is directed by Maleficent: Mistress of Evil‘s Joachim Rønning, was delayed by last year’s SAG/AFTRA strike and started in January 2024.
Disney is targeting a 2025 release for the follow-up to the 1982 seminal science fiction film Tron and the 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy. While the Tron film centered on a video game designer (Jeff Bridges) entering his own creation, and the follow-up focused on his son (Garrett Hedlund) following in his footsteps,...

It's been nearly a decade and a half since Disney took us back into the digital world of Tron with the long-awaited, eagerly anticipated sequel "Tron Legacy." Fueled by an unbelievable soundtrack from Daft Punk, the film from "Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski was visually dazzling and offered up some exhilarating action sequences, even if the story left something to be desired. While certain elements of the movie haven't aged very well, such as a digitally, de-aged duplicate of a young Jeff Bridges who now looks like he's in an old video game rather than a blockbuster movie, I think "Tron Legacy" delivers a satisfying sci-fi adventure, and the highs outweigh the lows.
Well, with "Tron 3" reportedly starting production last month, there's no better time to revisit "Tron Legacy" in the form of an incredible new piece of artwork by artist Raid71, on sale today at Bottleneck Gallery.

A lot of sci-fi films helped shape the genre into what it is today, but perhaps none of them are as underrated as the 1982 film "Tron." The original entry into a franchise that would come to span several decades was studded with soon-to-be stars like the incomparable Jeff Bridges, who would go on to earn an Academy Award.
Bridges stars in the action-adventure as Kevin Flynn, a video game developer who gets trapped inside his own software and has to interact with the programs inside his computer's main frame to escape. Digital technology was still emerging in the 1980s, and computers were relegated to those with a proclivity for science. All that is to say, the public wasn't ready for a movie filled with symbolic computer metaphors, and the film was not a success.
However, as computers began to rise in popularity, so too did "Tron." Early web users looked...

The 1980s enjoys a privileged, some might even argue inflated position in the sci-fi pantheon. In the US, it was the decade that gave us two thirds of the original Star Wars trilogy, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Terminator and Tron. In TV land, Star Trek got a brand new Generation, Quantums Leapt, Knights Rode, and of course, Alf.
But on the other side of the pond, British science fiction television was doing things the way we British always have – for less money, and a bit more bleak. But it wasn’t all creepy John Wyndham adaptations and hostile alien invasions, the 1980s also delivered a couple of British space comedy classics, along with the most underrated series in sci-fi history.
The Day of the Triffids (1981)

Belated second sequel Tron: Ares is finally shooting, and it’s been announced that Gillian Anderson has joined the already starry cast.
Because it’s important not to rush these things, Disney has waited well over a decade to make a sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy. That film was itself a sequel to Tron, released in the dim-and-distant year of 1982.
Finally, though, filming appears to have gotten away over the past couple of days, with director Joachim Ronning (Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) posting a teasing image of a Tron 3 chair on the 20th January. It’s the sort of thing filmmakers often do when a film goes into production.

With those strikes over, the production is ready to go now – and Deadline reports that The X-Files star Gillian Anderson has signed on to join the cast. Details on the character she’ll be playing have not been revealed.

Considering it was released at a time when 8-bit video games were the industry standard, Tron was certainly a film that was ahead of its time. Though its $50 million gross made it a box office disappointment at the time, the film has grown over time and achieved cult classic status, spawning one sequel (2010’s Tron: Legacy), a TV show, and talk of another sequel in the works. When he made the original movie, Bruce Boxleitner was a 31-year-old actor with mostly television roles to his credit, so he was happy to be making a movie for Disney, but he never imagined that the film would still be a hit and a topic of discussion more than 40 years later.(Click on the media bar below to hear Bruce Boxleitner) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Bruce-Boxleitner-Celebrates-the-30th-Anniversary-Of-Tron-Copy.mp3

It's hard not to love Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski, the central protagonist of the Coen brothers' 1998 comedy "The Big Lebowski," and it's honestly even more difficult not to love the man who plays him, Jeff Bridges. Bridges is a part of pop culture himself, winning an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 2009 film "Crazy Heart" as well as starring in major franchises ranging from "Tron" to "Iron Man." He can play a wide range of characters, though the one that seems to come closest to the man himself is — you guessed it — The Dude. In fact, the Coens wrote the role specifically for Bridges, who joked that they must have spied on him in high school because the character hit so close to home, but it seems like there's a lot of Bridges in The Dude (and vice-versa!).
