Let’s be honest, what’s your all-time favorite dragon movie? Is it Dragonslayer? Dragonheart? Q: The Winged Serpent? Maybe it’s an animated feature like How to Train Your Dragon or Raya and the Last Dragon? No matter what your answer is, the unpopular opinion remains, Rob Bowman’s 2002 popcorn flick Reign of Fire is one of the most underrated movies featuring the mythic fire-breathing beasts. Never mind the fact that the flick boasts a lowly 39 Metascore and 42% Rotten Tomatoes score, the grim dystopian world-building, excellent visual effects, and big-d*ck swinging performances from Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale remain a ton of fun to behold. Of course, Reign of Fire had the misfortune of running into the far more potent cinematic behemoth, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which largely overshadowed the movie’s mild commercial success and eventually relegated the film into obscurity at worst,...

As confirmed by Deadline, Richard Roundtree, the groundbreaking star of the original "Shaft" franchise has died as a result of pancreatic cancer. He was 81. Roundtree was a gifted athlete who played for New Rochelle High School's nationally-ranked and undefeated football team but later dropped out of college after he was scouted by Ebony Fashion Fair founder Eunice W. Johnson and began modeling for companies like Duke hair products and Salem cigarettes. A few years later, he joined the Negro Ensemble Company theater group in New York City, where he became a fast leading man. This led to a successful career in front of the camera, where Roundtree would become colloquially known as the "first Black action hero."
He appeared in a number of Blaxploitation films in the 1970s, but he became a cinematic icon as detective John Shaft in the films "Shaft," "Shaft's Big Score!," "Shaft in Africa," and the short-lived series adaptation.

Richard Roundtree, an icon of Blaxploitation film who starred as detective John Shaft in Gordon Parks’ 1971 action thriller, died Tuesday afternoon after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 81 years old.
His death was confirmed by Patrick McMinn, his manager since 1987.
“Richard’s work and career served as a turning point for African American leading men in film,” McMinn said in his statement. “The impact he had on the industry cannot be overstated.”
Roundtree was a leading man from the very start of his lifetime in screen acting. After beginning his career in modeling, he secured “Shaft” at the age of 28, marking his feature debut. The MGM release earned $12 million in ticket sales off of a $500,000 production budget, helping to save the studio from bankruptcy. A breakthrough hit, “Shaft” set the tone for a prolific decade of Blaxploitation filmmaking and demonstrated Hollywood’s historical failure to consider Black talent...

Cities, with their bright lights and endless skylines, may seem like the last place you’d expect to encounter the supernatural or the sinister. The hustle and bustle, the coffee shops at every corner, the never-ending traffic jams – it’s all a part of the metropolitan charm, right? Yet, behind that cosmopolitan allure hides an underbelly of chilling tales, waiting to unfold amidst towering skyscrapers and maze-like streets. Just think about it – those very alleys you consider shortcuts might just be gateways to another realm.
In the grand tradition of taking familiar settings and turning them on their heads, filmmakers have masterfully woven narratives of terror in the very heart of urban landscapes. The next time you find yourself walking down a dimly lit downtown street, you might just wonder which shadowy figure from the world of cinema is lurking around the corner. If you’re a fan of big...

It's heartbreaking to think of all the movies that never made it to the screen. We keep hearing stories of projects collecting dust, incomplete due to unexpected tragedy, or a lack of funds, or a greedy studio executive cutting corners for tax purposes. But every now and then, a long-dead film is exhumed from the grave and is given new life to be enjoyed by a new generation of fans. Case in point: The Primevals, a fantasy adventure more than 50 years in the making that finally got to celebrate its world premiere at this year's Fantasia Film Festival.
The Primevals was first conceived in 1967 by stop motion animator David Allen, whose credits include the adult parody Flesh Gordon, Larry Cohen's Q – the Winged Serpent, and Alex Winter's Freaked. For more than a decade, an early draft of the script was shopped around to various studios, until 1978 when...

Exclusive: The Serpent star Tahar Rahim is set to join Dakota Johnson in Sony Pictures’ Madame Web. Also on board are Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor and Isabela Merced for director S.J. Clarkson. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless penned the screenplay, with Kerem Sanga also penning a previous draft.
Sony had no comment.
In the comics, Madame Web is depicted as an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis and thus was connected to a life-support system that looked like a spider web. Due to her age and medical condition, Madame Web never actively fought any villains. For that reason, sources have stressed it’s possible the project could turn into something else. Insiders say that due to her psychic sensory powers, she is essentially Sony’s version of Doctor Strange. Rahim’s role in the film in unknown.

The mystery picked up, and the tensions in the town rose (as did the libidos).
It would be incredible if the rest of the series were like the last seven minutes of The Essex Serpent Season 1 Episode 4.
This episode saw a significant improvement but still fell short of something spectacular.
Outside of the final seven to eight minutes, this episode proved to be boring like the others.
The mystery of the Serpent got a whole five minutes of development, and the romances took an unexpected turn.
Despite all of the relationship-building that the writers built for Martha and Spencer, they completely dumped it!
Instead, after Cora's birthday party that Luke threw for her, Luke and Martha managed to spend some intimate time together.
After consuming a Lot of alcohol at the celebration, Luke and Martha start to make fun of Will and Cora (totally out of character for Martha).

The Essex Serpent provides brilliant period costumes but does not live up to expectations with intriguing yet slow premieres.
The Essex Serpent Season 1 Episode 1 took a lot of time to set things up, and we quickly got bored.
Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Claire Danes (Homeland) do their best to try and salvage the series, but it falls flat.
Claire Danes dons her best British accent, and Tom Hiddleston is as handsome as ever, but neither of them can save the show from itself.
Based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Perry, Danes plays Cora, a recently widowed Londer who embarks on a trip to Essex to investigate a mysterious serpent.
She got swept up in the mystery, influenced by her previous natural history research and her grief.
There's also a potential love interest: the doctor who tried to care for her husband before his passing.

Superstition, science and faith collide in an Essex fishing village when a centuries-old rumour resurfaces about a biblical sea serpent haunting the waters. Some believe the beast has come to punish Aldwinter’s people for their sins. Others – like Tom Hiddleston’s vicar Will Ransome – don’t believe in it at all. Widower Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes) hypothesises that it’s an evolutionary throwback to the age of the dinosaur. Will’s fey wife Stella (Clémence Poésy) secretly welcomes it as her lord and saviour. So unfurls Apple TV+’s atmospheric six-episode adaptation of Sarah Perry’s celebrated 2016 novel.

As The Adventures of Maid Marian begins it is the year 1199 in Merry Olde England. Robin is off fighting with King Richard. Marian is hiding out in a nunnery, occasionally sneaking out to poach a deer for starving villagers.
Then the word arrives, the king has died and his troops, including Robin, will be returning. Overjoyed, Marian rushes off to meet him. But she’s not the only one who wants to welcome him back. William De Wendenal the former Sheriff of Nottingham wants to revisit ye olde tymes with him as well.
As many times and ways as the tale of Robin Hood has been told I honestly can only think of one version that’s told it from Marian’s point of view, the BBC comedy Maid Marian and Her Merry Men.

The hardest hit are those working with UK-based talent.
Publicists and marketing teams, particularly those working with UK-based talent, are even more frazzled than usual as they put together promo campaigns for key Cannes films amid strict travel regulations, quarantine requirements and onsite testing regimes.
“It has been tougher than usual,” admits Karina Gechtman, head of international marketing and publicity at Altitude Film Sales, who is overseeing the premieres for UK director Clio Barnard’s Directors’ Fortnight title Ali & Ava.
The challenge is the minimum five days of quarantine the UK government requires everyone returning from France to do.

During “The Masked Singer’s” Group B finals, Nicole Scherzinger was the only panelist to correctly guess Dr. Elvis Francois was hiding inside the Serpent costume. So how’d she know his secret identity? As it turns out, Nicole recently sang a virtual rendition of “Rise Up” with Dr. Elvis on the post-show program “After the Mask” (watch above). When the Serpent hissed that he’d performed a duet with one of the panelists before, Nicole immediately realized the clue was about her and so she correctly named the doctor as her final guess.

Hello, Jake Kanter here, and welcome to the latest edition of International Insider. This week, we ponder Mipcom’s slim pickings and examine the problems of production in a pandemic. Scroll on for news and analysis.
A Quiet Cannes
Modest Mip: And so, we have reached the end of perhaps the strangest Mipcom market ever. There is no doubt that coronavirus killed the buzz of this year’s Cannes gathering, despite the best efforts of organizer Reed Midem to capture the spirit of the market online. While there were some impressive speakers (special nod to a news-stuffed Q&a with Netflix’s Ted Sarandos) and some smart ways to interact via the Mipcom Online+ platform, it was clear that nothing can replicate the heat and light of a physical event.
Slow news week: One way of measuring the success of Mipcom is by the strength of news and gossip emanating from the market.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 4, Episode 4 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired Oct. 14 on Fox.
Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez isn’t known for singing, choreography or puppetry. But for “The Masked Singer,” he had to master all three.
Sanchez, now a college football analyst for ESPN, was the fourth celebrity to be revealed this season on “The Masked Singer.” But he didn’t wear just a normal disguise: Sanchez was “Baby Alien,” the show’s first ever costume that came with a puppet.
“I think that needed somebody that was big enough and strong enough to handle the weight of the costume,” Sanchez said. “Because after wearing it for a while, it wears on you a little bit. It’s like 40 pounds. And it positions itself on your upper chest area and lower back and shoulders, so they needed somebody with some broad shoulders to handle it.

This week’s Masked Singer focused its energies on plumbing the contestants’ childhoods for clues, which was ironic, given that The Child… er, we mean Baby Alien, was booted at the end of the hour.
In between the last episode and this one, I had become convinced that Sacha Baron Cohen was behind the tiny extraterrestrial. After all, there’s a new Borat movie coming out soon, and Cohen loves himself some stunt marketing. And what better cover than hiding in plain sight by doing the Borat voice, like Baby Alien did in all of his interviews and clue packages?...

Sneak Peek "Victoria" actress Jenna Coleman, currently filming the upcoming BBC/Netflix thriller "Serpent", in the October 2020 issue of "Tatler" magazine, wearing Chanel, Oscar de la Renta and Jimmy Choo, photographed by Claire Rothstein:
"I'm a complete and utter romantic," said the former "Doctor Who" actress. "That hasn’t changed in me at all – but the story needs to change a bit now ...Maybe love has a five-year cycle, and it doesn’t make it less of a beautiful thing.
"I mean, how on earth you manage it in this industry, I have no idea. Hopefully that will maybe be faced sometime soon: sets with more crèches for children, things like that. I can’t quite comprehend how that would possibly work, but I would definitely like children one day.
"As you get older, you realize there's no point in trying to control certain aspects. You have to roll with the punches.

The Masked Singer travelled into heretofore unexplored crooning country Wednesday, on two fronts.
First, the show debuted the Baby Alien costume, which complete obscures the singer inside (and also forces that person to engage in some basic puppetry). Second — and a much bigger deal, overall — the performer inside the Gremlin costume decided that he was done after one musical number and unmasked himself.

And TheWrap has an exclusive sneak-peek at the moment when Jenny McCarthy, Robin Thicke, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger meet the Fox singing competition’s first-ever puppet costume.
In the clip, which you can view via the video above, Baby Alien starts zooming onto “The Masked Singer” stage in his rocket ship, making a truly out-of-this-world entrance. Per the chyron, Baby Alien boasts these attributes: “Strength: Interstellar cuteness, Weakness: Cranky at nap time.”
The judges lose it when they first see him, with McCarthy shouting out “What is this?!,” Scherzinger looking on in awe, host Nick Cannon saying “This is amazing,” and Thicke going, “What??”

Tonight, Joe Bob Briggs returns for the Season 2 premiere of The Last Drive-In on Shudder. With so many horror fans staying inside these days, this is the perfect time for the return of the series, and Joe Bob talks special guests, world premieres, and more in our recent interview:
How do you feel about the success that The Last Drive-In has had since it first premiered, and the positive reaction on social media and from people you’ve met at recent conventions?
Joe Bob Briggs: Well, I'm amazed. The good vibes just keep on coming, and more and more people are joining our little group. So I'm very happy with everything that's going on with the show. I'm still not sure exactly why we're so popular because we're using the format that I've used twice before, going back to the ’80s. I think there's a desire for community right now.

Tim Heidecker mocks the Maga-loving, “involuntarily celibate” Trump supporter in the comedian’s new song “Ballad of the Incel Man.”
“Wear my ‘Hillary for Prison’ shirt / Like a good boy should,” Heidecker’s rally attendee sings. “Got my picture of Obama / Which we’ll burn in effigy / And I hope I find a like-minded girl tonight at the Trump rally.”
All proceeds from the song, available through Heidecker’s Bandcamp, benefit Hias, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society; the Pittsburgh synagogue shooter Robert Bowers criticized Hias in a series of anti-Semitic...

Ian Buruma, the top editor of The New York Review of Books, has left his post in the wake of his defense of publishing an essay by disgraced Canadian ex-radio host Jian Ghomeshi.
The exit follows a similar, widely criticized radio defense by the publisher of Harper’s magazine of a piece written by accused #MeToo perpetrator John Hockenberry.
The Ghomeshi piece is billed on the cover of the august periodical’s current issue, which explores the theme “The Fall of Men.” Headlined “Reflections From a Hashtag,” the essay aims to shed light on the fate of men who have been accused of misdeeds and the reputational price they pay in the #MeToo era. Ghomeshi is known for co-founding the Canadian public radio show Q, a Fresh Air-like program featuring interviews with a cross-section of cultural and political figures. It airs nightly in New York on Wnyc and on dozens of other U.

1986’s Critters sometimes feels like a summation of all those more popular monster comedies that came before.
Along with teen sex comedies, slasher films, and jingoistic action hero cartoons, the early-to-mid-‘80s, depending upon your taste, was a golden era for what might most simply be called monster comedies. So we got Gremlins, Ghoulies, C.H.U.D., Q, The Winged Serpent, Basket Case, Troll, a double handful of others and their ensuing sequels. If you wanted to push it some, you could even toss E.T. and Ghostbusters in the mix. Despite the contemporary settings, hip jokes and cultural references, most were clearly modeled after classic ‘50s sci fi and monster movies like The Blob, most were relatively mild and family friendly (at least when compared with the nihilism of the slasher films), and a number of them went on to make lots and lots of money.
