Jackie Chan contains multitudes.
Although many American filmgoers know Chan best for his Hollywood blockbusters and family-friendly fare, his profound impact on global cinema cannot be denied. A martial arts master who has battered his body for decades doing his own stunts in his signature comedic style, Chan has acted in over 150 movies, making him one of the wealthiest and most globally recognizable stars of all time.
With martial arts films having a moment in the spotlight in 2023, with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” landing the Best Picture Oscar and “John Wick: Chapter 4” becoming a series-high box office sensation, it’s fitting that Shout Select has released their two part “Jackie Chan Collection” Blu-ray box sets, which are a great starting points for novices and worthy purchases for die-hard fans as well.

Two of the films—Maybe It's Love (1984) and My Name Ain't Suzie (1985)—were directed by Angie Chen. After directing a third feature, Chen turned to commercials and documentaries.Chen's life encompasses a broad swath of Chinese history. Born in Shanghai, she and her family caught the last train to Hong Kong during the civil war. They relocated for a time in Taiwan, moving back to Hong Kong when Chen's father left his family for Germany. Chen won a scholarship to a college outside Chicago, then transferred first to the University of Iowa before enrolling at UCLA. While translating a screenplay, she met Jackie Chan, who made her his assistant director on Dragon Lord (1982), a martial arts film shot in South Korea. Back in Hong Kong,...

The martial arts master Jackie Chan made some amazing movies. We take a look back at the superb Project A series...
It’s a mystery to me why Jackie Chan appears in so few Greatest Director Of All-Time lists. I mean, sure, he’s a household name and any martial arts enthusiast, no matter how deep or casual, will be quick to let you know how good he is at fighting. Yet, outside the genre fandom, he rarely seems to get the respect he deserves as a filmmaker. Perhaps the problem is that two of the most critically dismissed or maligned genres in film are action and comedy, which also happen to be the two things Jackie Chan does best.

After the early 1980’s, Golden Harvest started to branch out into the modern-day world leaving behind the Kung Fu cinema age and progressing into something massive. From 1981 onwards, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao (The Three Dragons) were about to embark on a sensational journey, progressing from there Kung Fu genre into modern-day Martial Arts and stunt work, something Shaw Brothers were left behind and Golden Harvest was to be the new global company.
Jackie Chan back then headed to the United states to try to break into the international market, but the movies he appeared in didn’t really take off and Jackie was also disappointed with the filming of The Big Brawl. Golden Harvest started in 1970, after Raymond Chow had left Shaw Brothers studios along with producer Leonard Ho and decided to start there own company and go up against the dominance of Shaw Brothers.
Shaw Brothers had been the leading studio for many years, showcasing legendary Directors, Actors and Marital Artists. Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho knew they had to come with something big and make a huge noise in the world of cinema and indeed they did just that. They made a few movies in 1971 such as The Angry River, Lady Whirlwind and One Armed Boxer. But one Actor stood out over the rest, showcasing his incredible talent for the first time in a big movie and his name was Bruce Lee. When the Big Boss premiered in Hong Kong, the audience cheered and mobbed Bruce after the movie had ended.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have always been a staple of late '80s to '90s geek culture. Four turtle brothers are exposed to mutagen and then raised by a Ninja rat to fight crime and eat pizza in only the most radical of ways. It's so easy to forget that at one point they were once five with a girl turtle, who would go down as one of the most controversial characters in Tmnt history.

10.Jean Claude Van Damme
Jean Claude is one of the best kickers i have seen out of the Asian movie market. His jumping spin kicks are brilliant, hitting with speed and power, which would take anyone’s head off. Van Damme was also a former member of the Belgium Team that won the European Championships in 1979 in Brussels.

When they name the greatest action stars ever to grace the movie screen, who would they mention? Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Willis? Well there is only one guy who stands out above all, and his name is Jackie Chan. If Chinese Zodiac is his final big action movie, then we need to sit and watch this legend at the age of 58, show what he can do for one last time. It will be a sad when Jackie finally calls it a day and stays behind the camera, but at least his choreography and directing will still be on gong for many more years.
Jackie Chan does not need a gun to win a battle, all he needs are his fists, feet and the occasional object Ie. Ladders, chairs, chains, you name it, Jackie can use it. But that’s not all, if you think you can corner him and win that way,...

And in his first scene in this Friday’s episode, titled “Aithusa,” Callis comes face to face with the man who was once his mentor – fittingly, court physician Gaius.
Once the pupil of Merlin’s Gaius, Borden left Camelot during the Great Purge, but in the darkness returns to Camelot looking for the third part of the Triskelion – an ancient object that promises to reveal the location of the last dragon egg.
Despite a stern warning from Gaius, Merlin offers to help Borden if it means he can fulfill his obligation as the Last Dragonlord to ensure the survival of the species. But the task turns deadly when Merlin realizes exactly why Borden wants the egg.

Comic book artist and writer Stacie Ponder has created a brand new strip paying serious homage to RPG gaming, and she's kindly agreed to share her work with FanGirlTastic - see below for page one!
In Ponder's own words - "As the title RPG may imply, this is a comic that’s a bit like a fantasy role-playing game. Heroes, monsters, dungeons, mountains, cool swords, companions, quests, magic, bloodshed…the whole epic shebang. I love those kinds of games, whether they’re the Western conversation and character-heavy type or the Japanese turn-based type or the tabletop type which I’ve only recently delved into, so I figured Hey. Why not make a comic in that vein? Why not, right?
"If you’re a fan of Final Fantasy, Skies of Arcadia, Fable, Dungeons & Dragons, Dragon Quest, Dragon Age, Dragon Lord of the Rings, or heck, even Star Wars, you might like RPG.

A boy by the name of Gilli, (Harry Melling) uses magic to fend off his attackers on a lowly road to Camelot. Hiding a ring in his belongings, but how could they have not found it, it wasn't very cleverly concealed. He's taking part in the tournament. Merlin (Colin Morgan) wonders the sort of riff raff that will turn up, just for the money. Arthur (Bradley James) tells him it's an open tournament and it's a tradition that takes place every 10 years. Arthur: "The only rule is, there are no rules." As soon as he said this, I thought Fight Club (1999). So I ask you, "what is the first rule of fight club - there are no rules." Merlin's (TV) own version of the movie, circa medieval times. Camelot is over-run with participants, as Merlin pointed out, so won't Uther (Anthony Head) fear there being sorcerers around. Merlin is...

Ooh scene 1 and already we get a shirtless Arthur! (Bradley James) Stop it writers, you can't spoil us already, you'll leave us with no surprises. Arthur meditates and soon after he comes up with a quest of his own: to search for The Fisher King and bring back his Golden Trident. This Merlin (Colin Morgan) calls "an important day in Arthur's life." This Trident is mentioned in the legends of the Fallen Kings. (It's Arthur who makes another reference to this.) Uther (Anthony Head) tells him Arthur must journey on this quest alone and this will prove him worthy of Camelot and to be King, in front of his subjects. Well going it alone is not on the agenda, not when Merlin's around and certainly not when he finds out about Arthur's bracelet. Gaius (Richard Wilson) provides Merlin with the lowdown on the Fisher King (so what's happened to...

Arthur (Bradley James) and Merlin (Colin Morgan) are being pursued by bandits in the forest, in a scene reminiscent of the BBC's other successful drama, Robin Hood (TV), as fans of this will recall. Arthur tells Merlin they'll outrun them before asking why Merlin never trusts him. Of course they don't outrun them and Arthur leads Merlin into a cave, and tells him he should trust him and that's coming from a future king. It's actually called The Valley of the Fallen Kings. Merlin tells him it's cursed but Arthur says it's only a myth. They'll be safe from the bandits and Merlin should, "trust me." Arthur is shot in the back by an arrow, as expected whenever he says to trust him, that's when things go awry. Merlin sees no possible way out for them and attempts to provide comfort to Arthur. He believes Arthur is dying. In this...

The Dragon (John Hurt) cannot fight the call of the Dragon Lord and so has to obey. The Serket's (scorpions) poison that attacked Merlin (Colin Morgan) required the aid of an enchantment to heal him. Arthur (Bradley James) is angry as he has no clothes for archery practice. He swears Merlin will be the target when he finds him. Morgana (Katie McGrath) sneaks into Uther's (Anthony Head) chamber to plant more of the mandrake root, tormenting Uther even further. The Dragon informs Merlin that the venom was too potent for Merlin's powers to overcome. It's Merlin's fault that Camelot is in peril and he should have heeded the Dragon when he told Merlin not to trust Morgana. "Trust is a double-edged sword." Merlin believed Morgana to be like him as she also possessed magic. The Dragon says that Merlin and Morgana are similar, but Merlin insists he will never be like her.
