Michel Hafner (3 January 2000):
This DVD version of _Dark Crystal, The (1982)_ by Columbia/Tristar is of good quality.
The film master used is pretty good. The are speckles in many scenes, but not distracting. Image steadiness is ok. Contrast rendition is good. The many dark scenes have deep blacks and nice shadow detail. Colors are even a bit better. The saturated colors of the world of the Skeksis and the more pastel colors of the mystics look great. Sharpness of this 16:9 enhanced DVD is ok, but could be better. The noise and grain level is mostly pretty low. Concerning video artifacts the presence of some over-enhanced edges should be mentioned (for example on the planetary machine in Aughra's lab). At the start of chapter 19 (about 8 seconds into the chapter) there is a mastering glitch. Looks like some fields can not be properly put together to full frames. Compression is good but does not fully use the capacity of the dual layer disc, it seems. The film has no layer break, I think. So more than one layer is used for supplements alone.
This DVD is well made. It will hardly disappoint on any kind of display. The supplements contain deleted scenes and scenes from a workprint with the creatures talking in their own languages instead of English. These scenes are interesting, but hard to enjoy since they have awful image quality (worse than VHS). The master looks not like a work print but some horrible video tape. I'd rather not get this kind of quality in the supplements and use the bits instead for better material or the main feature. Your mileage may vary. The trailers have better image quality but still considerably worse than the film.
