5. Edward Scissorhands (1990): I would love to see how something like Edward Scissorhands would go over in today’s society. Clearly, if the school he’d be attending observed any of today’s weapon policies, he’d be expelled instantly and have at least 4 interviews on news programs and talk shows before the week was over about how the institution is “denying his fundamental right to express himself.” Edward Scissorhands reminds me a lot of many of the movies that came out in the late 80s, up until 1990. Lots of teen angst with a dash of fantasy – lots »

Duncan Jones talks Moon and reveals his next sci-fi project

11 October 2009 7:37 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

The director of this year's sci-fi release Moon has spoken about his influences for the film and revealed what projects he has lined up next.

Duncan Jones is attached to helm a Second World War submarine drama called From The Deep, but he isn't done with science fiction just yet.

As his next film, he's aiming to make what he calls a love letter to one of the genre's all-time classics.

Moon, released in the Us in June and in the UK a month later, was Jones' feature film debut and received largely positive reviews. Films fans appreciated it for easing off on the pedal of CGI visual dazzle and delivering a more thoughtful story without the bang-bang-boom of films such as Transformers.

Made for $5million, it brought in just $6.56million worldwide, partly due to its limited release. Clearly this was never intended to be an explosive summer blockbuster.

Warner Bros. Answers Prayers for 'Outland' Remake

20 August 2009 2:03 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I remember not thinking Outland was very good when I snuck into the theater to see it in 1981, and I can't imagine that, even at such a young age, I missed anything that would flip the switch and make this movie one we need to return to 30 years later. Of course, there's no stopping the remake now; Warner Bros. is developing the film with Shoot 'Em Up director Michael Davis.

If you missed it, Outland is essentially an intergalactic High Noon, with Sean Connery not at the top of his game as a marshal stationed at a mining outpost one of Jupiter's moons who must battle dangerous drug pushers...in spaaaacccce. »

-- "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" director Chris Nolan was all set to direct an adaptation of the weird UK TV series, "The Prisoner." That is no longer the case, according to producer Barry Mendel. The project is still in the works, and there's even a script from David and Janet Peoples -- the "Twelve Monkeys" writers -- but the man who revived Batman for the modern era is no longer a part of it. -- Disney has announced the lineup for their D23 Expo, where fans will be able to lay their hungry eyes on all manner of upcoming properties from the Mouse House, including Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" and Jerry Bruckheimer's "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time." The ‘Outland’ Will Be Revisited

19 August 2009 1:02 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Grit. Long days in a mine. A sense of somehow restrained lawlessness. A rash of violent deaths. A Marshal taking a stand after finding out that “the company” is responsible for the killings.

It sounds like the makings of a perfect south-Atlantic murder mystery, but it’s actually the outline for a 1981, outer-space-based epic starring Sean Connery (see pic above) that’s about to have new life breathed into it.

Outland offered a great slice of science-fiction wrapped in what (in the future) is supposed to be mundane life on one of the many moons of Jupiter in a “backwater town” but in this case - it was literally out of this world entertainment.

Warner Bros. has green-lit a new incarnation (read: remake) of Outland that intends to present the feature as something much larger than was ever originally planned. This time, the backdrop will be an entire city that orbits the moon. »

'Outland' Heads Back to the Final Frontier

19 August 2009 12:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Allow my paranoia to run rampant for a second because I'm beginning to think the big movie studios are taking their remake ideas from my Netflix account. Languishing somewhere around #57on my queue is Peter Hyams' Outland, which means I'll probably get to it just as Warner Bros' remake of it hits theaters. Yes, that's right -- Warner Bros is remaking Outland. It isn't just an idle fancy either, as The Hollywood Reporter says that the studio is already well into production. Michael Davis is set to direct, and Chad St. John is penning the screenplay.

As you might remember, the original starred Sean Connery as a marshall on one of Jupiter's moons. His one year tour of duty isn't exactly peaceful as several miners meet violent ends, and none of the other colonists are willing to assist in the pursuit of justice. Connery is forced to take on »

Michael Davis to Direct Outland Remake

19 August 2009 11:48 AM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Michael Davis, writer and director of the Clive Owen action flick Shoot ‘Em Up, has signed on to helm a remake of the 1981 Sean Connery space western Outland. Chad St. John, who scripted the WB drama The Days Before, is on board to write the screenplay. The original, which drew comparisons to High Noon, starred Connery as a marshal on one of Jupiter's moons who is investigating mysterious deaths. He's forced to take on the colony's corporate administrators alone when the rest of the colonists refuse to help. The new take expands the concept, while keeping the original's theme. The story takes place in an orbiting city around the moon, where a cop uncovers a murderous conspiracy endangering the entire city. With a week before his retirement back to Earth, our hero has to choose between walking away with his wife, or taking on a private army with his overachieving ex-partner and wife's former boyfriend. »

Shoot 'Em Up director takes aim at Outland remake

19 August 2009 9:42 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

I'm fuzzy on the rules, but are you allowed to criticize a remake of a remake? Either way, going to the effort of a full on geek rant starts to loose some of its luster the third time around and I'm not sure I have it in me this morning anyway. What I will say is that attaching Michael Davis, the director of arguably one of the silliest movies in recent memory, doesn't sit too well with me. Peter Hyam's Outland (and High Noon for that matter) was a brilliant exercise in slow-burning suspense, not Ott bullet opera. But hey, perhaps Davis will surprise us all with his versatility.

Synopsis:

"The story takes place in an orbiting city around the moon, where a cop uncovers a murderous conspiracy endangering the entire city. With a week before his retirement back to Earth, our hero has to choose between walking away with his wife, »

Shoot ‘Em Up Director Signs on for Outland Remake

19 August 2009 9:01 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Yet another remake is being prepped for ignition this week as Warner Brothers and Hollywood Gang have announced their intention to put together an updated version of the 1981 sci-fi film Outland starring Sean Connery. The original, which was directed by Peter Hyams (Capricorn One, Timecop), followed a Federal Marshal on a mining colony on one of Jupiter's moons, who uncovers a dangerous corporate conspiracy. Described as a "space western" of sorts, it has often been compared to High Noon. The remake will be helmed by Michael Davis, who recently did the over-the-top action/comedy Shoot 'Em Up, and written by newcomer Chad St. John (The Days Before). Although I haven't seen the original, somehow Davis doesn't seem like the right guy for the job. Hopefully he won't get too carried away with the action sequences. ‘Outland’ Remake Coming To A Moon Near You

19 August 2009 7:34 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Warner Bros. has announced their plans for a remake of Peter Hyams' 1981 thriller Outland, and they've already named a director for the project. Per Variety, Michael Davis will be directing the new film from a script by Chad St. John. Davis' last film was the over-the-top action flick Shoot 'Em Up starring Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti.  Fun, action set-pieces aside, that movie was a cartoonish romp that offered nothing in the way of nuance, character, or drama. It will be interesting to see what Davis does with this new (well, old really) material. "We're staying true to the thematic heart of Outland" Davis says, "while expanding the space frontier concept." Outland starred Sean Connery as a police marshall stationed at a mining outpost on one of Jupiter's moons. He's too good at his job and quickly makes some powerful enemies who in turn call for backup in taking out the marshall. Connery's »

Outland is headed to remake land

19 August 2009 1:16 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

If you know your science fiction films then chances are good if I ask you to name a movie where it's like High Noon but in space the answer I'll get back is Outland. Back in 1981 Sean Connery played a marshal stationed on a mining base on Jupiter's moon Io. A string of mining deaths ruled accidental or suicides led Connery's cop to uncover a conspiracy involving narcotics. When he takes a stand against the base's corrupt manager he finds that no one will side with him except a cranky medical officer. Connery then runs around inside and outside the station being chased by/hunting down two assassins that just arrived on the shuttle to kill him. It's not the best that Connery has done but Outland has it moments plus it did a decent job of showing people pop when exposed to zero atmosphere.

Shoot Em Up Director Michael Davis To Remake Outland

19 August 2009 12:21 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Warner Bros has hired Shoot Em Up director Michael Davis to direct a remake of the 1981 Sean Connery sci-fi action thriller Outland. For what it's worth, Shoot Em Up was a very underrated movie, which due to poor marketing, did very badly at the box office. But if you love over-the-top action like Crank, I highly recommend it. Davis has a bunch of films on his imdb page, which frankly aren't worth listing. And yes, he is credited with writing the really horrible 1994 film adaptation of the video game Double Dragon. But Shoot Em Up is a film that is fun enough to make me forget about his prior filmography, fuel my excitement for whatever he's going to do next. Even if that next project is a poorly reviewed Peter Hyams movie from the early 1980's. Outland is considered by most to be "High Noon set in outer space." The »
