We’ve been following the progress of the cult horror film The Resurrection of Charles Manson for a while now, ever since it was first announced under the title Man’s Son. Now the film – which counts Frank Grillo (Boss Level) as a cast member and marks the feature directorial debut of Remy Grillo, who happens to be Frank Grillo’s son – is set to receive a digital release on March 16th, and with that date just a week away a trailer has arrived online. You can watch it in the embed above.
Scripted by Josh Plasse and Brev Moss, The Resurrection of Charles Manson was “inspired by modern occult activity in the California desert”. The story goes like this: A couple goes to the desert for a romantic weekend and shoot an audition for a role in an upcoming film. Their holiday quickly turns deadly as they are the target...

Fans were surprised and shocked at the news of adult Jean Grey’s return to the Marvel Universe in the upcoming and highly anticipated Phoenix Resurrection (on sale in December), but the 5-issue epic is only be the beginning of exciting new adventures of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters.
Marvel have this past weekend announce that Jean’s story continues with X-Men Red, a new series written by Tom Taylor (All-New Wolverine) with art by Mahmud Asrar (All-New, All-Different Avengers Generations: The Unworthy Thor & The Mighty Thor).
From the press release:
“As an X-Men fan, as a Jean Grey fan, as a Mahmud Asrar fan, and as a Travis Charest fan, to be asked to write X-men Red is a dream,” said series writer Tom Taylor. “The time is right for an X-Men book like this, and I’m very excited about the story we’re telling in these pages.

These days, people don’t take comic book deaths seriously – and there’s a reason for that. Basically, pretty much any hero or villain to have bitten to the dust returns at some point, usually within a few years when it comes to deaths that have occurred in this decade. Still, there are a few to never have been undone or have stuck for quite some time.
One such example is that of Jean Grey, whom the House of Ideas will be bringing back later this year in the five-issue limited series, Phoenix Resurrection and, subsequently, in 2018’s X-Men Red. But before you commence any eye rolling, take a moment to think about how an event such as this will impact mutants at large and what kind of stories can be told.

Director, playwright, and actor Sam Shepard has passed away at the age of 73. BroadwayWorld first reported the news this morning.
He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of pilot Chuck Yeager in “The Right Stuff.” He was also the author of forty-four plays, as well as several books, including short stories, essays, and memoirs. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979 for his play “Buried Child.”
As BroadwayWorld notes, “Shepard’s plays are chiefly known for their bleak, poetic, often surrealist elements, black humor and rootless characters living on the outskirts of American society.”
In 2009, he received the Pen/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award as a master American dramatist. Shepard was elected to The American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1986. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1986. Shepard was also a dedicated teacher of the arts,...

Jordan Harrison’s 2014 Pulitzer Prize-nominated play “Marjorie Prime” explores what happens when artificial intelligence enters the home and tries to aid us. It follows the 86-year-old Marjorie (played by Lois Smith in the first production), whose mind routinely falls into confusion and fading memories. But then she acquires a handsome new companion who resembles her late husband and is programmed to tell her the story of her life. The question is, “What would you remember, if given the chance?” Now director Michael Almereyda (“Experimenter”) will adapt Harrison’s play to the screen with Smith reprising the title role and Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”) as Marjorie’s new companion. The film also stars Geena Davis (“The Accidental Tourist”) and Tim Robbins (“Mystic River”). Watch an exclusive teaser for the film below.

A prolific screenwriter who emerged from the late 1970s as a promising American film director, Lewis John Carlino wouldn’t get behind the camera following his third, and least successfully received feature, Class (1983), an item which, in passing, looks to have the stamp of John Hughes and the Brat Pack all over it. Aggravating in its considerable inconsistencies, this was the director’s first attempt to film a treatment he didn’t write or adapt himself, scripted by Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt (both writers who would move into mainstream film and television). The result is a rather wishy-washy prep school version of The Graduate, but the comparison is merely a pale echo, trapped inside a banal resolution with troubling misogynist tendencies.
Immediately upon meeting his new roommate Skip (Rob Lowe) at prep-school, Johnathan (Andrew McCarthy) is thrust into a rigorous new environment. Initial misgivings are set aside for a...

From writing Beverly Hills Cop to directing Toy Soldiers and Dawn Patrol, we have a chat with writer/producer/director Daniel Petrie Jr.
Daniel Petrie Jr comes from a family with movies in its blood.
His father, Daniel Petrie Sr, directed films such as Resurrection, Cocoon: The Return and A Raisin In The Sun. His mother, Dorothea, produced movies, wrote novels and acted. And then his brother, Donald Petrie, directed Cocoon: The Return, Miss Congeniality and Grumpy Old Men.
Yet Daniel Petrie Jr is just as busy. His screenplays include Turner & Hooch and Beverly Hills Cop (for which he earned an Academy Award nomination), whilst his directorial debut was the much-loved (by us especially) Toy Soldiers.
As his new film as director, Dawn Patrol (starring Scott Eastwood) lands on DVD, he spared us some time for a chat about his career. Starting with what he's up to right now.

Another forgotten gem from the mid-1970s receiving a new Blu-ray treatment is 1975’s Report to the Commissioner, a textured police procedural examining changing social mores and the generalized internal corruptions we’re used to in these scenarios, resulting in tragic circumstances thanks to the sincere ignorance of its protagonist. Yaphet Kotto, a regular supporting player in a number of Blaxploitation features from the decade, is a standout as a weary, sympathetic detective numbed by the machinations of law enforcement. It’s a greatly overlooked title of the era, featuring a variety of recognizable names in early roles as street hoods, and based on a novel by James Mills (The Panic in Needle Park, 1971), adapted for the screen by Abby Mann (Judgment at Nuremberg, 1961) and Ernest Tidyman (Shaft; The French Connection, both 1971). Though its narrative is, at times, a bit rough around the edges, this deliberately paced thriller features rich characterizations and excellent chase sequences.

The Triple Crown of Acting: to have won an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony award. Not even Meryl Streep or Marlon Brando can claim such a feat. Ellen Burstyn can. This week, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (Bam) is running a retrospective of some of Burstyn’s most memorable performances. Spanning nearly sixty years, Burstyn’s career is defined by unremitting risk-taking and a tenacious passion for the craft. She’s embodied over one hundred and fifty diverse roles, which include—but are not limited to—the mother of a devil-possessed daughter ("The Exorcist"), a resurrected car accident victim with a benevolent gift ("Resurrection"), an amphetamine-addicted and increasingly deluded elderly widow ("Requiem for a Dream"), a Neo-Pagan cult leader ("The Wicker Man"), a triple-infanticide murderess ("A Dream of Passion"), and a ‘70s feminist with dreams of stardom ("Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore"). Last year, she took on a role that...

The poster for Voyage of the Damned makes a bold claim, and maybe those who saw Stuart Rosenberg’s star-studded blockbuster in 1976 have remembered it ever since. Until a couple of weeks ago, however, when I saw it in a list of past Oscar nominees, I had never heard of it, and I don’t think it would be unfair to say that it is a film that has not stood the test of time.
Voyage of the Damned, which chronicles the tragic failed escape of 937 Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany, was nominated for three Oscars (for Best Score, Best Adapted Screenplay, and for Lee Grant for Best Supporting Actress, the lone acting nominee among a boatload of international heavyweights).

I'm sure you've seen the melancholy yet uplifting new spot for Nebraska that points out the ages of its principal cast and how long they've been acting. It's inspiring, for sure, as longevity often is. Hollywood and the Oscars often favor the sprinters (note all the stars, particularly actresses, who won too soon and all the films that opened in the rush of awards season that were only hot for two months) but life is a marathon.

The 53rd Academy Awards were a life-changer for me. The ceremony for 1980 marked (held in March 1981) marked the first time I watched the broadcast and determined that it was my urgent task to see each of these nominated films. A precocious scheme, really, given that I was at the time thirteen years old and living in the middle east when I viewed (on betamax) the taped-from-tv recording of the ceremony months after its actual airing. Still, the 1980 Oscars were a clarion call to this wee little Stinky, a prompt to seek out films worth watching. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I started with the actressing, ultimately screening (mostly via similarly bootlegged betamax tapes that filled my expat community’s lending library) all but one of 1980’s nominated best- and supporting actresses as quick as I could.

I've always been interested in the way characters / stars are introduced within their films. Sometimes you can feel the filmmaking underlining the moment: look here, you will love this character! Other times intros are nonchalant and the character sneaks up on you.
The Supporting Actress Nominees of 1980 ~ The Introductions
Last month I ranked the 1952 nominees by the quality of their entrances in preparation for their month-end "Smackdown". This month for the 1980 theme, to mix it up, let's just view them in order of when they show up in their movies. When moviegoers were first seeing these movies back in 1980, what did these characters promise them when they walked into the plot, already in progress?
Cathy Moriarty as "Vicki" in Raging Bull
[17 minutes until 'who's that girl'?]
Jake: Who's that girl you were just talking to.
Joey: The friend of mine I was just talking to? The blonde? Vicki.
Jake: Where's she from?
Joey: She's from the neighborhood.

In “Political Animals,” the USA Network series event, Ellen Burstyn stars as Margaret Barrish, part of a Clinton-esque political clan. A straight-shooting, one-time Vegas showgirl, Margaret is the mother of Elaine Barrish Hammond (Sigourney Weaver), a former First Lady who subsequently divorces her philandering husband and is named Secretary of State. The six-part series premieres July 15.
Burstyn, 79, has enjoyed a storied career in Hollywood and on the stage. Look, I can't help it: The Oscars rule. I care about them. I refuse to stop thinking about them. And if you read snicks' recent Oscar snubs piece, you'd refuse too. If you love entertainment, glamor, and winning, you simply have to love the Oscars. And Project Runway. But hey, back to the Oscars! Even the biggest Oscarphiles can stand to know more about the precious gold statuette, and I'm willing to bet most of you don't know about these five nominees, actresses who've faded from public consciousness. Let's revisit the weird and wild catacombs of the Academy's most fascinating forgotten ladies, shall we?

Okay, before I decide how to reconfigure the fun but exhausting new Q&A series, I thought I'd answer 5 Oscar questions I stubbornly avoided before.
Ellen Burstyn in "Resurrection" (1980)
Michael: Going back to 1980 out of the five nominees - who would you have handed the Best Actress Oscar to?
Nathaniel: I can't vote on 1980 because I've never found an opportunity to see Ellen Burstyn in Resurrection and I don't vote without seeing all five. Or at least I don't vote without all five if I really love the missing actor... which, in this case, I do. (Also: regarding 1980. I've heard the pleas for me to talk about Gena Rowlands since I never do. I just have to decide how to attack that large subject.)
Philip: Why do you think Oscar never took a liking to Jim Carrey?
Nathaniel: He was trying too hard when they weren't ready for him yet.

Veteran actor Ellen Burstyn believes young actors are misguided in believing an agent is a panacea. "I hear it all the time, 'How do I get an agent?' " she comments in the soft, almost breathy, voice that's become her vocal signature. "They feel the most important thing is to get an agent. It's not. The most important thing is to become a really good actor and to keep on studying, and if you do that and you have talent, people will start talking about it, and you'll find your way to an agent and work."Identified for more than 45 years with the iconic Actors Studio as a member, and now its co-president along with Harvey Keitel and Al Pacino, Burstyn is an impassioned advocate of ongoing training. "Talent only takes you so far," she says; that's a view she says is shared by current members, who are committed to...

Ellen Burstyn in Resurrection (1980) Having already partnered with Turner Classic Movies for one series of dvds-on-demand, turnerclassic.moviesunlimited.com, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has now launched an even more ambitious program of custom-burned discs in with amazon.com. One of the titles in its initial lineup is a particular favorite of mine, and included in my new book, Leonard Maltin’s 151 Best Movies You’ve Never Seen: the 1980 drama Resurrection, starring Ellen Burstyn, Sam Shepard, Richard Farnsworth, and the legendary stage actress Eva LeGallienne. Written by Lewis John Carlino and directed by Daniel Petrie, it’s a moving and unusual story about a…...

The Last Airbender
Opens: July 2nd 2010
Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.
Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".
Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit...

DreamWorks, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci could be walking with a "Xombie."
The studio is in negotiations to buy "Xombie," a pitch about a zombie who is also a policeman, from cop-turned-scribe Will Beall, with Kurtzman and Orci in talks to produce.
Beall, repped by CAA and Management 360, also is adapting his debut novel "L.A. Rex," about a policeman patrolling the gang-ridden area of the 77th Division in South Los Angeles, for producer Scott Rudin.
"Xombie" is based on a Devil's Due comic book by James Farr, itself based on his online animated series. Farr's creation centers on a zombie cop named Dirge who attempts to saves humanity's remnants, particularly a young girl named Zoe, from evil zombies.
DreamWorks is in negotiations to acquire the source material. The logline for the movie version is being kept under wraps.
If deals are closed, Cindi Rick and John Frank Rosenbaum...

If there is one particular actress that filmmaker Darren Oronofsky likes to cast, then it has to be Ellen Burstyn. In The Fountain, the director himself wrote into the script a role for the acclaimed actress. In Requiem for a Dream, Burstyn was nominated for a Best Actress award, and it was very unfortunate she did not win- her performance is way up there with the greats.
In the movie, Burstyn portrays Sara Goldfarb, an elderly widow who became addicted with weight-loss amphetamine pills, was hospitalized against her will, undergoes painful electro-convulsive therapy, and later on was confined at a mental asylum. For her performance, she won the Indie Spirit Award for Best Lead Female and more than 8 major critics' association awards for Best Actress. She also received nominations for Best Actress from the Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globes and the Oscars.

They say in space, no one can hear you scream. But on the Internet, you can already hear fans cheering that original Alien helmer Ridley Scott is returning to the franchise.
Variety reports that Scott, who introduced audiences to the original Alien monster roughly 30 years ago, is attached to the upcoming prequel from Twentieth Century Fox. He had previously been mentioned as a producer — with Carl Erik Rinsch rumored to helm — but the studio was purportedly only interested in the project if Scott himself directed.
The new film has also found its screenwriter, Jon Spaihts, who seems to have become synonymous with space thrillers, having written the script for Warner Brothers’ upcoming Shadow 19, starring Keanu Reeves. He was later hired to write Morgan Creek’s Passengers, a screenplay about an epic space journey, which got him noticed by Fox and Scott’s production company Scott Free.
