Alec Baldwin Gets Star Struck (Video)

24 December 2009 5:48 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Even Alec Baldwin gets starstruck sometimes. On Letterman Wednesday night Baldwin described what happened when he was filming "The Good Shepherd" with director Robert De Niro. Every time De Niro yelled cut the first few days to give notes, Baldwin was lost in his head having "Raging Bull" fantasies. He then told the story of being in an elevator with Burt Lancaster. Baldwin did an impression of the screen legend standing in profile, knowing he was being stared at, and letting Baldwin soak him in. Baldwin is currently doing promotion for "It's Complicated." Interview with Arthur Cauty – director of wrestling documentary Hard Knocks

15 December 2009 12:18 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

There is a famous quote in Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters in which Max Von Sydow’s character Frederick ponders aloud:

“You see the whole culture. Nazis, deodorant salesmen, wrestlers, beauty contests, a talk show. Can you imagine the level of a mind that watches wrestling?”

To Frederick it is baffling anyone would waste their time watching men in spandex engage in an orgy of pre-planned fake violence. Yet to Roland Barthes, the famous academic and acclaimed thinker, wrestling transcends the primitive notion that it consists solely of pretend fights; to him wrestling was one of the grand spectacles – part ballet, part Greek morality play, theatre and athletics combined, storytelling through physicality. Andy Kaufman, renowned for his eccentric humour, alternatively saw wrestling as a sublime medium for performing arts – blending fact and fantasy to invoke very real emotion from audiences.

New Delhi, Dec 11 (Ians) Bikram Saluja has revisited “The Godfather” and “Raging Bull” in a glossy coffee table book that has him posing against backdrops of the two iconic Hollywood films. The model-turned-actor says that he is honoured that megastar Amitabh Bachchan has written the forward.

“When the book was finally done, I wanted someone to write its introduction and who better than the biggest star Amitabh Bachchan himself,” Bikram told Ians in an interview.

“I sent a message to him saying that it would be an honour for me if he writes the forward. He asked for the book and wrote the introduction in a month. I was so glad because he is truly an inspiration and for him to find my. »

Where have all the biopics gone?

9 December 2009 1:32 PM, PST | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

A few years ago, the Hollywood biopic finally seemed to be coming of age. It was the fall of 2004 -- a season that gave us not one but two of the most thrilling biographical dramas ever made, the jumpin' and impassioned Ray and the bold and brilliant Kinsey. (No, that's not Kinsey at left -- it's Woody Harrelson as Larry Flynt -- though it's probably a ménage he would have approved of.) The fact that these two movies came out within one month of each other was a coincidence, yet I marveled, at the time, at what they had in »

John’s Top Eleven Films of the Decade

6 December 2009 3:47 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

I was just under 11 years old as we entered the 2000s, and in the last decade I have made it my mission to fill the space in my mind that should be reserved for academics to remembering the details of far too many films. In looking back upon this decade, it seems that we’ve had quite a good chunk of time for movies — there are only two years absent on my top ten list: 2000 and 2005, while 2006 is represented by three films. I still cheated, though, by extending my list to eleven entries. Some were just too good to decide between.

I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. And before you start — don’t cry. The Dark Knight isn’t on here.

11. The Royal Tenenbaums – 2001

Spoiler: you’re going to find that comedy is slightly underrepresented on this list, with Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums »

Top Ten Overrated Films

3 December 2009 9:58 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Overrated films are an interesting breed. They are essentially the type that everybody goes crazy for until consideration, time, thought and retrospect force us to reassess the situation. They are, by and large, the product of Hollywood: though by no means exclusive. However, Hollywood films are the most hyped; the most seen; the most heard. They are garnered with awards and flattery and the cycle begins again. Is it genius of deception or commerce?

Orson WellesCitizen Kane is often labelled as “the greatest film ever made”. It will not appear in this list. It is not an overrated film. Even now, in the sixty-plus years since its release, Welles’ masterpiece remains inimitable. Searching for something to dislike in it is pointless. Yes, critics go ga-ga for Orson, and so they should. He was a true maverick.

Exclusive: Robert De Niro and Kirk Jones for 'Everybody's Fine'

1 December 2009 9:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

For his roles in such '70s and '80s classics as Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull and Goodfellas, Robert De Niro has been revered as the master of Method Acting. But of late he has been more closely associated with animated family fare (The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Shark Tale), thrillers that failed to deliver thrills (Hide and Seek and 15 Minutes) and slow plodding dramas (City by the Sea and Men of Honor). Even his recent reunion with Al Pacino in Righteous Kill failed to spark with audiences.

For much of this decade, many De Niro-led films have neither ignited the box office nor drawn critical kudos. But there have been a few notable exceptions. As Frank, the curmudgeonly soon-to-be-father-in-law in Meet the Parents, De Niro struck gold. The sequel, Meet the Fockers, raked in almost $280M in international ticket sales. Birthday Suits: The Blonde and the Bookish

29 November 2009 4:24 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Celebrating cinematic birthdays for 11/29. Which celebrity would you most like to spank today?

Blond³: Diane, Anna and Cathy

1832 Louisa May Alcott wrote the oft-adapted Little Women

1895 Busby Berkeley, legendary choreographer/director. What would the early musicals have been without him?

1898 C.S. Lewis wrote the Chronicles of Narnia which were made into unfortunately generic movies. He also wrote The Screwtape Letters which I personally pray will never see the silver screen despite Hollywood's efforts. Some books just deserve the undiluted perfection of their original form. Sir Anthony Hopkins played him in the weepy bio Shadowlands (1993)

1901 Mildred Harris, silent film actress and Mrs Charlie Chaplin (for a few years)

1918 Madeleine L'Engle prolific author, most famous for Wrinkle in Time

1931 Shintarô Katsu the original blind swordsman Zatoichi

1932 Diane Ladd, if you don't love her Oscar nom'ed performances in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Rambling Rose and Wild at Heart, well... what's wrong with you? »

Surrealist artwork from The Red Shoes to go on display

20 November 2009 7:31 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

BFI Southbank to exhibit paintings and sketches of 'Freudian ballet' created for the film by Hein Heckroth

The Red Shoes, Powell and Pressburger's 1948 masterpiece, is one of the most visually spectacular movies in British history, and an abiding inspiration for artists such as Martin Scorsese, who counts it among his favourite films.

Now, ahead of its re-release in a newly restored version, its colours returned to their original Technicolor vividness, visitors to BFI Southbank in London will have the chance to see some of the original artwork for the film, created by surrealist painter Hein Heckroth.

The Red Shoes, the story of a dancer's struggle to achieve greatness against the demands of "normal" life, has entranced balletomanes and cineastes in the 61 years since it was made.

The most ambitious aspect of the film is the extended ballet sequence at the heart of the story, in which The Red Shoes »

Nicolas Cage: Bad To The Bone

By

Alex Simon

It’s an inevitable event in every accomplished artist’s life: if you go back on the timeline of their existence and stop in adolescence, almost all of our greatest actors, writers, filmmakers, musicians and painters went through tumultuous, tortured teenage years, often scorned, almost universally ridiculed by their peers and elders alike for the cardinal sin of being “weird.” Most people run from their inner nerd as they grow into adulthood, masking it behind toned muscle, fine clothing and the right haircut, struggling to be that cool guy or gal whom we knew had all the answers and the clearest skin back when such things started to be de rigeur in our lives (and if you live in Southern California, continue to be).

Nicolas Cage is that rare movie star who not only never seemed to care if he was cool, »

Scorsese to Receive DeMille Award at Golden Globes

14 November 2009 6:07 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

You could give Martin Scorsese just about any award you want and I don't think anyone would protest. Though he emerged at a time when American film was really blossoming, you could really only argue that among his contemporaries, Steven Spielberg is on the same level. Even then, I'm not certain Spielberg has been as consistent or as daring as Scorsese has in his career. They're also shooting for different goals most of the time.

A couple years ago, Scorsese finally got his Oscar, even if it's not the best example of his work and certainly not the first time he earned the award. At the Golden Globes in January, Scorsese will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his "outstanding contribution to the entertainment field." Spielberg, incidentally, won this past year.

Scorsese to Receive Honorary Golden Globe

13 November 2009 1:21 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The Hollywood Foreign Press will bestow its honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award to Martin Scorsese during the Golden Globes on January 17, according to Variety.

Scorsese, who is a few days from his 67th birthday, is responsible for several movies legendary for their gritty, sometimes expressionistic, portrayals of violence. These include Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and GoodFellas.

He also crafted many underrated gems that explored various social and cultural issues. These include The King of Comedy (the obsessions of celebrity culture), The Last Temptation of Christ (a non-Gospel, first-person telling of Jesus's internal struggle), Kundun (the life of the Dalai Lama), and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (the trials of single-motherhood).

The DeMille Award recognizes the lifetime achievement of various actors and directors. Recent recipients include Steven Spielberg, Robin Williams, and Al Pacino. Earlier recipients include Walt Disney, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, and Alfred Hitchcock, among others. You can »

Martin Scorsese to Receive Golden Globes' Cecil B. DeMille Award

12 November 2009 10:09 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

For my money, Martin Scorsese is one of the most influential filmmakers working in Hollywood today, and his films are nothing short of inspirational, provocative labors of love and life. It seems the Hollywood Foreign Press Association also agrees as Variety reports that he will be this year's recipient of  the Cecil B. DeMille Award recognizing a person's outstanding contribution to the entertainment field, which just last year was given to Scorsese's longtime friend, fellow filmmaker Steven Spielberg. Scorsese will be honored by several of his peers and collaborators when the show (hosted by Ricky Gervais) airs live January 17th. Scorsese has received two Golden Globe Awards for his work as director on The Departed and Gangs of New York as well as nominations in directing for Casino, Age of Innocence, Goodfellas and Raging Bull. As overly-long and boring as the awards shows usually are, I love these lifetime achievement »

Martin Scorsese To Be Honored at 2010 Golden Globes with Cecil B. DeMille Award

12 November 2009 12:59 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In January, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) will bestow the Honorary Cecile B. DeMille Award to Martin Scorsese for “his outstanding contribution to the entertainment field,” to which we say “Congratulations, Mr. Scorsese.”  Of course, any award honoring Scorsese’s career is well-earned by the prolific and influential director.  His lengthy and diverse filmography naturally contains movies which flopped and received no support from film critics, but when you look at his hits, he has left an unforgettable stamp on not only American cinema, but on audiences the world over.  That his work continues to improve and defy simple definition is an inspiration to aspiring filmmakers and a challenge to his peers.  There’s only one complaint people have about the awards Scorsese receives: they’re overdue.

Hit the jump to read the full press release.  The 67th Annual Golden Globes will air on January 17, 2010.  Martin Scorsese’s next film, »
