MGM is looking to raise as much as $600 million to finance an upcoming film
slate, including Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings prequel, The
Hobbit, additional Pink Panther comedies starring Steve Martin, and a
remake of the 1980 musical Fame, Bloomberg News reported today
(Tuesday). "In the past, movie studios haven't offered Wall Street the
opportunity to participate in their biggest and best films," MGM spokesman
Jeff Pryor told the wire service. "There is a lot of interest because of the
quality of product we have." Only last month Paramount scrapped similar
plans to raise $450 million from a unit of Germany's Deutsche Bank, blaming
the current lending climate. The Deutsche Bank unit, set up specifically to
invest in entertainment projects, was subsequently shut down.

Madonna was left disappointed after her 50th birthday celebrations on Saturday when several of her guests failed to turn up.
The Holiday hitmaker hosted a lavish party at the exclusive Volstead nightclub in London's West End.
It was attended by many of the star's family and friends - but Madonna was allegedly upset about the no-shows.
She reportedly told guests, "I'm really disappointed.
"There are a lot of people who are not here tonight, but thanks to everyone who did make it."
The singer's daughter, Lourdes, played a song from hit musical Fame on a grand piano at the club and husband Guy Ritchie presented the pop star with $500,000 (GBP250,000) worth of jewellery.

The stars of new movie musical Nine are to be marched through a Fame-style bootcamp to make sure they can sing and dance when director Rob Marshall calls for action.
The Chicago filmmaker is setting up a drama school, where his stars, including Penelope Cruz, Daniel Day-Lewis and Marion Cotillard can work exclusively on their high notes, dance steps and even their dialect.
Spaniard Cruz reveals, "We have a camp in London where you go from the dancing room to the singing room, to the acting room to the dialect coach.
"It's all day like that and I can't wait to get started."
