Uncle Bob Martin: A Long Thank-You to Frank, Part One

16 November 2009 4:05 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The first that I heard of Frank Henenlotter was on a perfectly awful cable tv show that aired on Manhattan's Public Access channel in the 1970s.

"The Nikki Haskell Show" was a self-indulgent half-hour cable show hosted by Haskell, a wealthy socialite-divorcee and former stockbroker who now claims that her show marked the invention of "reality television." About a year ago, after her diet pill company got in trouble with the NFL over a "secret ingredient" that should have been labeled, Haskell signed up for an account at YouTube and started posting clips from the 30-year-old program, but she seems to have lost interest after posting just ten of them.

The main reason I'd tune in Haskell's silly show was the programming that followed it, "adults only" programming like Screw magazine publisher Al Goldstein's "Midnight Blue," porn performer Robin Bird's "Hot Legs" show featuring New York's leading "dance talent" and, »

Quick, what’s the scariest horror film score out there?  I’m sure a couple of no-brainers came to mind, and a few of you probably thought of something wholly original.  Thanks to the Cinemagic channel on Sirius Xm, we have an official list to choose from.  There are a few shocking inclusions, and a couple of omissions, one that I, myself, deem glaring.

Gay Of The Dead 26: Big Bear Horror Film Fest Recap, Part 2

28 October 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Part 2 of the Big Bear Horror Film Festival recap. Read Part 1 here.

Saturday

After being up way too late the night before watching Golden Girls and Sex And The City reruns in my hotel room (P.S., I’m totally gay), it was time to get back to the Big Bear Horror Film Festival for a really great film, Die-ner (Get It?).

Yes, the “Get It?” is part of the film title, which I’m now publicly begging the filmmakers to change. Why? Because this film is so much smarter than the title. Die-ner (Get It?) is a well directed, well written and well acted serial-killer-plus-zombie flick that makes great use of its limited resources. I don’t want to give too much away, but I definitely recommend Patrick Horvath’s awesome motion picture.

As we walk out of the theater for a quick break, J.T. Seaton* and Michael Simon* join our gay horror cabal. »

The Flickcast – Episode 29: Oblivion

28 October 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

This week on The Flickcast, Chris and Matt jump in after a week off with a whole bunch of new topics including the new Doc Savage movie, written and directed by Shane Black, the performance of Paranormal Activity and Saw VI, the reboot of Short Circuit, horror films in general and much more.

The guys also make some great picks this week including Matt’s pick of teen horror zombiefest Dance of the Dead and Chris’ pick of the 1979 horror classic Phantasm, featuring Angus Scrimm as “The Tall Man.”

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques or offers of sponsorship, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter and at Facebook, MySpace or via email.

Gay Of The Dead 25: Big Bear Horror Film Festival Recap—Part 1

26 October 2009 3:24 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

As I drove up the winding mountain road to Big Bear, CA in the pitch-black night, I wondered, “What’s gay about the Big Bear Horror Film Festival?” Answer: just about everything.

What I didn’t realize before arriving was that a large homo contingent would be in attendance. In fact, there were so many gays in this tiny mountain village, to write “out gay ____” before each name I mention would be a chore. So I’m going to denote all the gay up in Big Bear with a “*”.

The Backstory: Several months ago Bbhf founder Michael Coulombe* pinged me via this blog with some very preliminary info on the fest. Sensing an opportunity to spread my super-important opinions around, I offered myself up as a judge for the festival. Realizing what a publicity juggernaut this blog can be, he immediately said, “Yes!” and I was on board.

No Phantasm Remake Please!

18 October 2009 5:35 AM, PDT | HorrorYearbook | See recent HorrorYearbook news »

The L.A. Times recently talked to Don Coscarelli, Angus Scrimm and Reggie Bannister about the 30th Anniversary of the Phantasm films! When asked about a possible remake Coscarelli replied; "I get a phone call every week, it seems, from somebody who wants to do it. It’s something I’ve been resisting for a while. I do think that, given the proper context, it would really be exciting to see what a younger filmmaker could bring to that story. It’s something I’m open to but I guess I’m seeking the right circumstances. Takashi Miike doing 'Phantasm,' how would that be? Anything that would ever be done would have to be done with sensitivity to the appreciation that the fans have for it. They just worship Angus as the Tall Man and Reggie as the loyal trusted friend." »

Shhhh! There's a Super-Secret 'Phantasm' Project on the Way

28 August 2009 12:28 PM, PDT | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

Ya gotta hand it to Director Don Coscarelli (Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep), if nothing else he's managed to single handedly bleed the Phantasm name Completely dry. The man has made no less than Four Phantasm films, which is true dedication for a series that of late has not been given much love. At some point Coscarelli has to sit back and ask himself why he's doing this.  I myself love the Phantasm series, even the direct to video drek, so news of another super-secret Phantasm project actually has me quite giddy. And the best part?  I think I know what it is... Horror Yearbook reports that a new Phantasm project has been 'lensed and is nearly finished'. We've heard rumblings for a while so I guess »

Is a new Phantasm project coming soon? Please God Say Yes!

27 August 2009 3:44 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

As huge fans of the Phantasm series, we follow Any little scrap we can find on the continuation of our beloved franchise. Case in point:

Angus Scrimm says don't hold your breath on Phantasm V (August 15th, 2008)

Phantasm V in active development? (January 31st, 2008)

News of cast script readings for Phantasm V (July 8th, 2007)

and there would be a lot more, but we've only been in operation for about 3.5 years.

So now comes news via horror yearbook and Phantasm Community that a new project is "already lensed and nearly finished." While they say it's Not Phantasm V, they say it Is something Big, described as "episode(s)". Is it a web series? I don't know, but I'm excited!

And to boot, theres a still from this "secret project" which you can see to the right, featuring none other then Ice Cream man, Reggie Bannister.

Phantasm Project on the Horizon?

27 August 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Don Coscarelli is in development on Bubba Nosferatu but there are rumblings from the Phantasm camp that something is happening. The fiends at PhantasmCommunity.com have heard a Phantasm -related project is nearly complete. It's not the fifth installment we've been waiting for, however. What is it? We venture to guess it's a webisode of some sort. Short film? Teaser trailer to generate funds? While we continue to speculate, here's a pic, courtesy of Horror Yearbook, from the "secret Phantasm project" featuring series fave Reggie Bannister. »

The tome, which Draven has been quietly working on for the past year, is a full-on educational tool for young moviemakers attempting to dive into the horror world.

Book Of The Dead explores everything from the history of the genre to preproduction, shooting and distribution, and features a host of filmmakers and actors dishing out advice on finding success in the field. Among the interview subjects are such iconic genre figures as Robert Englund, Stuart Gordon, Saw’s James Wan, Tom Savini, Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman, special FX artist Robert Kurtzman, Herschell Gordon Lewis, David DeCoteau, Charles Band (who also contributes a foreword), Phantasm’s Reggie Bannister and Fango’s own Tony Timpone and Debbie Rochon.

Cover art for John Dies At The End

14 August 2009 6:50 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Back in 2007, Permuted Press released a book that flew off store shelves almost as fast as it was published; spawned an online following; had it's movie rights snagged by Phantasm's Don Coscarelli; and got picked up by a bigger publisher.

Now, David Wong's John Dies At The End is ready for it's massive reissue courtesy of St. Martin's Press, and Fango's got the full details on the book, along with a wrap-around cover that you need to see.

The story details the adventures of two Midwest slackers who find themselves fighting inter-dimensional evil, a task for which they are profoundly unqualified:

“It's a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. »

Ron Perlman Uncovers the Truth About Bubba Nosferatu

Ron Perlman, speaking with Fangoria Radio, gave the world an update on his long-gestating follow-up to Don Coscarelli's Bubba Ho-Tep. In the new film Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires, Perlman will be replacing Bruce Campbell as Elvis in what is sure to be an over-the-top adventure unlike anything we've ever seen.

Perlman hopes to shoot the film in the fall, stating, "Well, I have this window that's about to open. I'll be done shooting Sons of Anarchy in September, and we're hoping to get into production on Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires in my hiatus between seasons two and three. I just spoke to Paul Giamatti (set to play Elvis' manager, Colonel Tom Parker) and Don Coscarelli this morning, and we're just moving the ball down the field, trying to get her done."

Also reported in the same story is that Don Coscarelli's favorite actor, and star of his Phantasm films, »

Movie Review: I Sell the Dead

13 August 2009 9:29 AM, PDT | MovieRetriever | See recent MovieRetriever news »

Aug 13, 2009 The concept behind Glenn McQuaid's I Sell the Dead is so undeniably clever that the film is likely to find a loyal cult audience that's willing to overlook its sizable flaws and embrace it with genre-loving, open arms. Horror fans, especially those who get excited by a cast list that includes Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Larry Fessenden (Wendigo), and Angus Scrimm (Phantasm), can be an incredibly forgiving lot. Sometimes an original concept, a plot that pays homage to a bygone era, and a few cast members who appear to be having a good time is ...Read more at MovieRetriever.com »

Ron Perlman’s Bubba Nosferatu update

While talking with Fangoria Radio recently to promote his new film I Sell The Dead, Hellboy star Ron Perlman gave hosts Debbie Rochon and Tony Timpone an update on the long-gestating Bubba Nosferatu project. In the Bubba Ho-tep (pictured left) sequel/prequel, Perlman will don the sequined Elvis suit previously donned by Bruce Campbell in the 2004 sleeper written and directed by Phantasm guru Don Coscarelli, who encores on the follow-up.

“Well, I have this window that’s about to open,” Perlman revealed. “I’ll be done shooting [his cable series] Sons Of Anarchy in September, and we’re hoping to get into production on Bubba in my hiatus between seasons two and three. Fantasia 2009: I Sell The Dead (review)

31 July 2009 9:37 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

When January rolled around, I was all ready to throw in the towel and declare 2009 a wash for movies in general. I'll tell you what, though. I continue to be surprised by some of this year's offerings and some of last year's that are finally making their way to me through the festivals. Though I haven't kept a best of the year list in several years because of how much of a pain in the ass those lists tend to be when there's nothing much worth talking about, I have been keeping one this year that began with Drag Me To Hell. I am now adding I Sell The Dead to that list, a flick I'd heard about but knew very little of. Glass Eye Pix has been hanging around for a while with a bunch of pictures in development for what seems like forever and now it would seem »

Fantasia 2009 wrap up (part 2)

21 July 2009 2:39 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Crush and Blush Directed by Lee Kyoung-mi * 1/2 Lee-Kyoung-mi’s first feature tries too hard to be the “polar opposite” of a romantic comedy. The story of a male teacher being stalked by a former pupil who has now become a teacher herself in order to be closer to him to attract his attention simply does not sustain the premise past the opening 20 minutes. The lead character, Me-sook, is played in an over-the-top fashion, and the film seems to have been made for the art-house crowd in spite of its plot, which seems ripe for a broad comedic treatment. The films also seems haphazardly edited and is often needlessly confusing. Grace Directed by Paul Solet *** ½ Childbirth can be a horrific experience if things go wrong, a fact ably exploited in Grace, which acts as a surefire contraceptive. An impressive first feature by director Paul Solet, who delivers an ambitious and masterful web of chills, »
