Network executives once came to the upfronts on a mission to get advertisers excited about a handful of new series coming in the fall. This year, TV’s big players took a T-shirt cannon approach.
Every one of the major presentations during the May 13-15 sprint in midtown Manhattan — NBCUniversal, Fox, Disney, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix — emphasized the breadth of the company’s content offerings. Call it the everything-everywhere-all-at-once strategy for the streaming age.
As always, common themes emerged across the week. “Connections” was the buzziest of buzzwords used by executives pitching their hearts out from the stage. Without question, the song of Upfronts ’24, the one heard at most if not all events, was Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em.”
After sorting through the firehose of shows and spin, here are a few trends that stood out this year.
1) Star-Power Surge
Last year, the writers strike kept boldface names from appearing at the upfronts.

Well this is awkward.
It’s not often you get to see a version of the “Can I copy your homework?” meme play out in real time, but that’s exactly what’s just happened: The New York Times has released a brand-new game, Connections, in which you have to find four connecting groups of four items in a grid:
Very excited to share the game I've been working on, Connections! I've loved making it, and hope you enjoy playing. Huge thanks to Heidi Erwin @oatmemo, Bella Virgilio, and the @NYTGames team...

BBC Presenter Victoria Coren Mitchell Accuses New York Times Of Cloning Her Cult Quiz ‘Only Connect’
She’s turned her seemingly esoteric quiz into one of the UK’s most beloved game shows, and now Victoria Coren Mitchell has accused The New York Times of copying the format.
The presenter said a newly-launched Times quiz, titled Connections, bears a striking similarity to Only Connect, the BBC show she has fronted since 2008.
In Connections, players must group words that share a comment thread. Only Connect, meanwhile, tasks contestants with making connections between apparently unconnected things.
Wyna Liu, the Times‘ Associate Puzzles Editor, tweeted about the launch of Connections on Monday. On Friday, Coren Mitchell replied: “Do you know this has been a TV show in the UK since 2008 ?! It’s so similar I guess you must do?”

Last week, seemingly out of nowhere, the usually relatively quiet Red Dwarf Twitter account announced this:

The statement read:
“Rob Grant and Doug Naylor are delighted to announce that the ongoing dispute over the Red Dwarf rights has been resolved.
Moving onwards and upwards, Rob and Doug hope to launch separate iterations of Red Dwarf across various media, working again with the cast and other valued partners, and wish each other the very best.
Smoke a kipper, Red Dwarf will be back for breakfast!!” (sic)
This came as a bit of a bolt from the blue, particularly among anyone who hadn’t been closely following the show since its last special, ‘The Promised Land’, in 2020.

A version of this story about Regina King and “Watchmen” first appeared in the Emmy Hot List issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Damon Lindelof’s “Watchmen” may be a limited series about superheroes based on a comic book, but it in many ways it’s also the timeliest and most prescient piece of television in the past year. A drama set in an alternate version of America that diverged from our present world in the 1980s, it deals with issues of white supremacy, police misconduct and vigilante justice; it also takes place in a world where some people wear masks, and it begins with a scene of the 1921 mob killing of Black citizens in Tulsa, Oklahoma (the “Black Wall Street Massacre”), which landed in the news after the series premiere when Donald Trump held a rally there in June.

Damon Lindelof’s adaptation of the “Watchmen” comics at HBO caught attention from Emmy voters this year with its incisive exploration of race and policing, storylines which now seem especially timely in a year dominated by Black Lives Matter protests and a renewed sense of urgency in the fight for racial justice.
But even before the death of George Floyd sparked mass nationwide protests earlier this summer, “Watchmen” star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II knew the show would present some hard truths.
“I think ‘Watchmen’ was uncomfortable material for a lot of people,” Abdul-Mateen said during TheWrap’s supporting actor nominees showcase on Tuesday, alongside fellow “Watchmen” stars and Emmy nominees Jovan Adepo and Louis Gossett Jr.

Resident Evil Village will pick up several years after the events of its predecessor – that much we know.
What remains unclear – and likely will until release day rolls around – however, is whether next year’s sequel will reveal what happened to Ethan and Mia Winters during that indeterminate time skip. Some form of catalyst will have undoubtedly been responsible for the couple’s relocation to a remote European settlement as seen in Village’s initial trailer, but what? Moreover, why is Chris Redfield, a member of the anti-terrorist organization Blue Umbrella, shown seemingly murdering Mia in cold blood before her husband’s very eyes? The answer may well lie in the events that unfold in Resident Evil 7.
For those who might not remember, the series’ soft reboot revolves around Eveline, a biological weapon created by a mysterious group known only as ‘The Connections,’ and the entity responsible for turning the...

The animated series Star Wars Rebels introduced an ensemble cast of major characters, both soldiers and Jedi, but there’s one hero, in particular, who has gone on to affect the wider Star Wars universe the most. Hera Syndulla, starfighter commander and Rebel leader, isn’t occupied with being a Jedi or on a quest to find one. Instead, she’s focused on fighting the Empire and freeing the galaxy from tyranny. From the TV series to the pages of the comics and novels, Hera has become one of the most familiar faces in the Rebellion and the New Republic, alongside Leia Organa and Mon Mothma.
Now, fans have spotted her in the trailer for Star Wars: Squadrons, the upcoming video game from Motive Studios and Electronic Arts. Coming out in October, it follows squadrons of Imperial and New Republic pilots after the Battle of Endor. Since Hera connects the...

As you’ve surely heard by now, Artemis Fowl will not be getting a cinematic run. It was originally scheduled for one, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s now been pulled from the schedule and will instead be hitting Disney Plus.
In fact, we finally know exactly when to expect it – June 12th. It’ll be just one of many, many new movies/TV shows arriving on the streaming service next month and alongside other titles like new episodes of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Tarzan and more, it makes up what’s looking to be a fairly decent line-up of new additions.
In total – if you’re to count all the individual new episodes of the various TV series – there are over 40 pieces of content to look forward to in June and below, you can see the full list of what’s headed our way.

Even today, I am indebted to writers like Neil deGrasse Tyson, Stephen Hawking and Sean Carroll for writing about subjects like black holes and the nature of time in ways that a layman like me can understand. I think people like this are imperative to society because many of the subjects they study are critical to us as a race. Two of those subjects are NEOs (Near Earth Objects) and astrobiology. There's a lot of argument these days over who did or didn't build this or that, but "Dirty Jobs" star Mike Rowe is sure of one thing -- regardless of who built America, there's a lot of alcohol mixed into the mortar of its foundation.
Tonight (Sept. 19) Discovery Channel premieres the first of three episodes (the next two air on consecutive Wednesdays) of "How Booze Built America," in which Rowe traces how beer, wine and spirits figured into the creation of the United States.
