It’s the holiday season and, for most, that means it’s that very special time of year when you get see your family; That large group of people you hate and utterly despise but, do to some arbitrary blood relation, feel provoked to associate with at least once during the bleakest, darkest, and most devastatingly cold part of the year. And, as always, what makes the company of these cringe inducing kin barely tolerable is that wonderfully distracting invention known as the television. For most kids, the holidays mean more than just Santa, and gifts, and honey-glazed ham. It means you get to crowd around the tele (in much the same way that imaginary family, in those invented greeting cards, sit around a fire) and melt away your brain on usually mindless seasonal programming.

Jose here, to remind you of an underrated gem from 2004.
When I was a child I was addicted to Superman. Not the Christopher Reeve movies and obviously not the weird TV show with Teri Hatcher, but the classic animated shorts from the 1930s. We had a VHS tape which I could watch for hours and hours completely enthralled by the terrific stories, the foreign adventures and even the sense of menace and doom conveyed by Dave Fleischer in under ten minutes.
Years later I had the same feeling watching Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Kerry Conran's debut film was a tribute to this era which featured giants robots, timeless kingdoms atop the Himalayas, perky reporters and heroines with eye patches.
Everything in the film is CGI, except for the actors, which gives it a retro-futuristic air. With nods to Dave Fleischer, Flash Gordon, Indiana Jones (which is

"Green Lantern" and "Deadpool" star Ryan Reynolds isn't the only guy pulling double duty with some of comics most popular characters these days. Next year, "Green Lantern" movie (and former "FlashForward" television series) co-writer Marc Guggenheim will jump into the driver's seat on DC's "Action Comics" series and script the adventures of the Man of Steel himself, Superman.
With DC already announcing that its next big event will kick off in 2010 with the title "War of the Supermen," it looks to be a big year for Kal-El. I caught up with Guggenheim to get more details on his upcoming debut as the regular writer on one of the industry's longest-running series, and what he has planned for one of the world's most popular superheroes.

From Splash Page: The "Superman" franchise is currently in the midst of a lengthy legal battle between DC Comics/Warner Bros. and the heirs of Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Recently, the Siegel and Shuster estates were awarded the rights to certain aspects of the "Superman" origin story — namely, anything and everything relating to Kal-El's Kryptonian origins.
DC Entertainment's loss of Clark's alien roots has led to some understandable fan skepticism about whether a new "Superman" movie could work without at least a passing reference to the lead character's home planet, particularly considering the long-rumored plan of a complete "Superman" reboot.
But the recent announcement of "Superman: Earth One" — the first in a series of original, out-of-continuity graphic novels written by J. Michael Straczynski — could offer a glance at exactly how the Man of Steel might fly on the screen without the Krypton component.

On Saturday I was lucky enough to attend a very special charity evening in aid of the Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation. It took place, as you might have guessed at the legendary Pinewood Studios just outside London near Windsor. The event was in aid of the Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation, a charity that helps people with disabilities to increase independence and improve life skills.
The event was named the Pinewood Legends evening for a reason. Invited along as guests of the Foundation were:

Mike Johnson will guest write a standalone issue of Titans focusing on Donna Troy. Titans #20 is the latest in the line of single 'day in the life' issues focusing on particular characters on the team. The former Superman/Batman co-writer will join the Titans creative team for a single issue that will see Troy returning to her former job as a photographer and battling the Fearsome Five. "[Group editor] Eddie Berganza graciously put me up for the gig when the call went out for writers as part of the Titans 'day in the life' series," Johnson told Newsarama. The Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the lineup of films playing in competition from January 21 through January 31, 2010. The early fest typically debuts some of the best films the year has to offer, like 2009’s Precious, (500) Days of Summer, and Moon.
I’m bummed I won’t be in Park City, Utah next month because the lineup looks great, and these are just the films playing in competition. Here’s a few that stood out to me:
The Allen Ginsberg trial film Howl starring James Franco, a documentary by Alex Gibney (a truly great filmmaker) on Jack Abramoff, Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious, a doc about Joan Rivers, the directorial debut of “How I Met Your Mother” star Josh Radnor titled Happythankyoumoreplease (I wrote a glowing script review of it here), Hesher with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, and Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

Chris Noth Discusses Playing Lex Luthor

Lex Luthor has benefited from many strong performances over the years from Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey in the features to Clancy Brown in the animated universe. Now, Chris Noth takes a turn at voicing the nefarious arch foe of Superman in February’s Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, the all-new DC Universe Animated Original coming from Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation.
The twist, of course, is that this is the Lex from Earth-3 (or whatever number they assign it) and he arrives to recruit the Justice League to help save his Earth from the Crime Syndicate, a gang of villainous characters with virtually identical super powers to the Justice League. What ensues is the ultimate battle of good versus evil in a war that threatens both planets and, through a diabolical plan launched by Owlman, puts the balance of all existence in peril.

The incredible looking Estonian drama The Temptation of St. Tony for which we got the exclusive trailer on a while ago. It's by Veiko Õunpuu who did the incredible Sügisball and I'm greatly looking forward to seeing this.
From Spencer Susser, the director of the incredible zombie short I love Sarah Jane comes Hesher, his first feature which stars Jgl!
David Michôd's Australian thriller Animal Kingdom which stars Guy Pearce.
From Taiki Waititi, director of Eagle vs Shark comes Boy which we previously reported on, but then it was known as The Volcano.

What Should Warner Bros. Do About Superman?

Anne Thompson over at Thompson on Hollywood ran a Superman post the other day that basically reiterates a lot of the things we’ve been reporting here at Screen Rant all throughout the Summer/Fall of 2009:
The rights to the character are still being fought over by DC Comics/Warner Bros. and the heirs of Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
Dce/WB has No plans to rush a Superman movie into production before a 2013 legal deadline.
The franchise is effectively in limbo at the moment.
As far as we can tell, ain’t nobody doin’ nuthin’ about it.
Comic book movie fans, right now one of our biggest icons is being benched because of some legal hangups, a loss of purpose and direction and a general sense of greed run amok. So what’s to be done about it? I have some suggestions and I know you do too…

Legal Issues and Indecision Keep Superman on Hold at WB

We pretty much knew this; the fact that Superman is completely stalled at WB is barely news. In July, Alan Horn said the property wasn't in development and that no script was underway. There's legal trouble with the Siegel family -- well, 'legal trouble' if you're Warner Bros. If you're the Siegel family it might be called 'regaining control'. Questions of whether the heirs of Jerome Siegel deserve proceeds from the character he sold to Detective Comics in 1938 aside, the situation is nearly a catch-22 at this point.
WB will soon have to negotiate a deal with the Siegel and Shuster estates, which in 2013 will have joint control over the material in Action Comics #1, putting the core elements of the character in their control. WB can develop and release a new film before then, but doesn't have a good idea how to do that right now. After a

In the beginning of Superman Returns the man of steel has been inexplicably absent for several years, but, of course, he makes a grand return to go on another epic adventure. Well, it looks like the film franchise is following in Superman.s footsteps, minus the whole homecoming thing. Despite positive reviews, Superman Returns ended up as sequel kryptonite, sending plans for another installment into deep space. Turns out, those plans aren.t long gone, they.re just on hold.
According to Indie Wire, Warner Bros. is saying no to another Superman, but only until the copyright issues are settled. The battle between the heirs of Superman co-creator Jerome Siegel, DC Comic and Warner Bros. has been an ongoing escapade for quite some time. The Siegels claim they.re owed some of the profits from 2006.s Superman Returns. Back in July, a judge ruled that DC, but not Warner Bros.

From Anthony Hopkins to Natalie Portman, Thor is picking up steam with a raft of castings, but how closely will the film stick to Stan Lee's 1962 comic?
Kenneth Branagh is a lucky man. Unlike the unfortunate director who will, eventually, be tasked with reviving the fortunes of Superman, Branagh is bringing to the big screen a superhero (Thor) with no movie precedent. The closest thing to the son of Odin who's popped up on film so far has been the hunky car mechanic who slightly resembled him in Chris Columbus's trashy 1987 comedy Adventures in Babysitting.
And Branagh seems to be making all the right moves. He's avoided reported studio pressure to cast a famous face – Josh Hartnett was said to be in the running – and instead plumped for the little-known Chris Hemsworth, who was Captain Kirk's dad in Star Trek for about five minutes.
