Frederic Forrest, the resilient character actor best remembered for his performance as the high-strung Chef Hicks in Apocalypse Now and for his Academy Award-nominated turn as Huston Dyer, the Awol army sergeant who captured Bette Midler’s heart in The Rose, has died. He was 86.
Forrest died Friday at his home in Santa Monica after a long illness, his friend, actor Barry Primus, told The Hollywood Reporter.
On Twitter, Midler called Forrest “a remarkable actor, and a brilliant human being, and I was lucky to have him in my life. He was at peace.”

Writer-director Larry Cohen, the man behind cult horror film classics like “It’s Alive,” “It Lives Again,” “Special Effects,” “The Stuff” and “A Return to Salem’s Lot,” has died. He was 77.
The announcement was made on his Facebook page: “The entire #KingCohen team mourns the loss of its star, hero and King, #LarryCohen. His unparalleled talents were surpassed only by his giant heart. The impact he made on television and cinema will be felt forever, and our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and fans.”
Cohen’s career in television and film began as a writer on procedural crime shows of the ’60s and ’70s, like “The Fugitive,” “The Invaders,” “Columbo” and “The Defenders,” along with the latter’s spinoff, “Coronet Blue,” which he created.

Of all the Masters of Horror, none are as singular as the great Larry Cohen. Many horror directors have made great movies that are identifiable as their own either stylistically or thematically (or many times both), but Cohen’s films truly could not be made by anyone else. They don’t necessarily have the technical sheen of Carpenter or the primal, confrontational quality of early Craven, but no one else in the genre combines inspired premises with subversive humor, political commentary, offbeat dialogue, and a specific feel for his locations – most commonly New York, which lives and breathes in Larry Cohen’s movies in a way it rarely does in any other filmmaker’s work. He’s a genuine one-of-a-kind treasure, and seeing his filmography reassessed and celebrated either in the documentary King Cohen or with special edition Blu-rays for movies of his such as Q: The Winged Serpent and The Stuff.

In the wake of the massive hit that was Jaws (1975), studios were foaming at the mouth to replicate its success. Of course, their idea was to take everything that they thought made Jaws a winner and put it in a different setting. Here’s a few that were cranked out by the dream machine: Jaws on Land (Grizzly), Micro-Jaws (Piranha), Jaws, Back to the Water (Orca), Jaws, Back to the Water Again, with Feeling (Jaws II) , and our flick du jour, the little engine that could, Jaws on Wheels – The Car (1977) .
In actuality, Steven Spielberg made Jaws on Wheels before he made Jaws, with the relentless cat and mousecapades of Duel (1971). However, this was 1977 and it was time for an upgrade. Released by Universal in May, The Car was (naturally) laughed off the screen by the critics, and why wouldn’t it be? A demonic vehicle terrorizing a...

So there’s this horror movie competition that takes place on Facebook every October, and this is my first year participating. I’m still a little lost, so bear with me. I have watched more than this, but these are the movies I watched during the week of Oct 4th – October 11th, the first official week of The Madness. I hope I can squeeze some more in this week, but having a 4 year old makes that tough to do. I think I had a pretty good week considering all obstacles. Plus, I saw some great stuff this week. Some revisits that I try to do annually, as well as some new movies, not released to theaters yet.
Late Phases (2014) – 2 pts
Director: Adrián García Bogliano
Easily misunderstood, but still solid. We don’t get much in the way of werewolf horror, so it’s good to support it when we do.

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

It’s Alive
Directed by Larry Cohen
Written by Larry Cohen
1974, USA
Although not his first feature, It’s Alive helped establish Larry Cohen’s reputation as a director of ingenious low-budget genre films, which come with unexpected twists, conflicted anti-heroes, dark humour, and sympathy for monsters, both human and non-human. Cohen, writer and director of such projects as God Told Me To and Q, made his first foray into the horror genre with this low-budget cult favourite about a murderous mutant baby on a killing rampage. Lenore Davis (Sharon Farrell) gives birth to the hideous clawed and fanged offspring, which immediately slaughters the delivery team and then escapes the hospital to continue to conduct a flurry of killings in its search for food and shelter. When the story becomes front page news, father Frank (John Ryan) joins the police manhunt, determined to exterminate the baby himself.

One of the great things about growing up in the late 80’s/early 90’s was that the majority of the well known horror franchises were all at their absolute peak in popularity, which meant that sequels to some of the most famous movie maniacs were always in production and always inevitable. Part of the fun of these flicks getting churned out at such an alarmingly fast rate was that in order to start promoting the next entry of a series in a timely fashion, studios would create teaser trailers with footage never intended for the actual movie. Just something quick and cool to whet the insatiable appetite of horror fanatics. So what follows are 10 of our all time favorite horror franchise teaser trailers. Do you remember any of the following?
A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) – At this point, Freddy Krueger was on the cusp of becoming a phenomenon.

Rick Baker. Friend of apes. Maker of monsters. Seven time Oscar winner. And that lucky number seven was for The Wolfman, shared with fellow Efx maestro Dave Elsey. Their on-stage speech was great, but the extended Thank You Cam was even better. Both Baker and Elsey thanked Jack Pierce and Dick Smith for inspiring them. Though there were grumblings online that the Academy clip showed the CG transformation rather then the make-up. It is always a treat to see our own getting the gold.

Venomous Mammals ... call me irresponsible, call me indecisive, but don’t call me lazy. Once again, I’m reaching out to you for assistance in choosing which film to retrospect upon. But it isn’t because I take quick glances at my obscene library and give up on making a special selection – no. It’s because I sweat blood night after night trying to determine what film should be picked from the bloated class. I refuse to go back to the hospital for horror films again (another story altogether), so we must try something else, mustn’t we?
Here we go. Below you will find a small gallery of photos from a variety of films. Whether or not they are “good” or “bad” doesn’t matter, as I suspect they are all beyond succinct critical description. That’s why they and we are here.
If you would indulge me, I...

It's always wonderful to see one of our own make good, or for that matter - great, and that's exactly the case here!
Axelle Carolyn wrote for us way back when (God, how we miss her), and now that she's an accomplished actor as well as author, it's with great pride that we announce her latest book on the genre, It Lives Again! Horror Movies in the New Millenium (review here), has just received some accolades of its own.
That's right, kids! The book just took home the Silver Award at this year's Book of the Year Awards in New York City.
"It's brilliant," says Axelle of winning the award. "Not only am I pleased for the book, but I'm also really excited that such an award could go to a book about horror movies. There's still this perception amongst mainstream critics that the genre doesn't deserve to be seriously analysed,...

The story broke on Tuesday that Neil Marshall would be exec producing The Ghost of Slaughterford for his Centurion second-unit director Ian D Fleming. Details were sketchy, but Mr Marshall, friend of Empire, got in touch to fill in the blanks. Not least of which is the writer and star of the film, one Axelle Carolyn. Not yet a household name, Carolyn cropped up in Doomsday and The Descent Pt. 2, and will shortly be seen "chopping off heads and shooting arrows at Romans" in Centurion. She'll also appear in the horrors Psychosis (with Buffy and Angel's Charisma Carpenter) and The Nephilim.*Marshall tells us that Slaughterford is self-aware, but "it's not intended to be tongue-in-cheek. It's very much in the tradition of classic British horror, from Dennis Wheatley to Hammer via Amicus. There's humour, certainly, as well as romance, horror and tragedy. But mostly it'll be scary as hell.

An addition to this announcement regarding the film Ghost of Slaughterford . It appears The Hollywood Reporter did not mention director Ian D. Fleming is working from a script by Axelle Carolyn who is also set to star. Carolyn will play a woman who rents out an old manse in Slaughterford to work on a novel. There she encounters a ghost, but as yesterday's announcement ominously says, "the locals become the ones to fear." Carolyn penned the book, "It Lives Again! Horror Movies in the New Millenium" and appears in Doomsday , Centurion and The Descent: Part 2 .

Undertones: Volume 7 It's the time of the year again where folks' minds turn to the macabre and the ghoulish; where death is celebrated rather than feared and of course, when dusty copies of horror films are taken off the shelf to terrify and amuse. So, in honor of the Halloween season it would seem only right that this installment of Undertones concern itself with the scores of horror films or, more specifically, those that emerged during a particularly groundbreaking and ultra-violent decade of cinema - the 1970s. Many of the horror films of the 1970s did not involve supernatural beings such as vampires, werewolves and swamp things, but the terrors of home and society at large. The menacing figures of films such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Hooper, 1974) and Halloween (Carpenter, 1978) may have worn crazy masks and looked decidedly 'un-human' but the messages these films posited concerned themselves with that of...

Our second stab at the Oscars contains make-up effects and score (read part 1 here). The make-up effects, followed by the visual effects and technical awards, remain my favorite parts of the show; here you got to see your heroes: Rick Baker, Howard Berger, Chris Walas or Rob Bottin in the audience. Even the great Stan Winston could have been out there, back in the day. Though best known for his “visual effects” wins—he brought home an Oscar for best make-up in 1991 for Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Here genre fans can rejoice, Greg Cannom brought home the gold, again, for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Cannom, a genre elder, worked alongside (just to name a few) Fincher, Coppola, Landis, Dante, Blatty, and Cohen creating all sorts of character and creature make-ups.

Time for yet another remake of a movie you only vaguely remember -- if at all. It's one of the biggest successes of the mega-prolific Larry Cohen's career, but It's Alive Did come out in 1974, and that's, like, ancient to horror fans of a certain age. Yes, it's the movie about a homicidal infant, and sure, it already spawned two sequels of its own (It Lives Again in 1978 and Island of the Alive in 1987... so I guess this makes it high time for the remake route.
The new version stars Bijou Philips and is helmed by Josef Rusnak, he of The Thirteenth Floor and the recent Art of War 2. According to the IMDb, Larry Cohen is still on board as a screenwriter, but he may have had no involvement besides saying Ok and collecting a check. The release date (video, no doubt) on...
