Watch This: Eli Roth's 'Nation's Pride' Movie from 'Inglourious Basterds'

7 hours ago | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Along with playing the vengeful Sgt. Donny Donowitz in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds, Eli Roth spent a little time behind the camera filming the short Stolz der Nation or Nation's Pride. For the uninitiated, I'll try to explain without being spoileriffic. Basically, the screening of the film plays an important part in the latter half of the story. It's a piece of German war propaganda cooked up by Joseph Goebbels (Sylvester Groth), which stars Pvt. Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Brühl) as himself -- a fighter who becomes a war hero after he basically sits in a high tower for a few days and picks off hundreds of enemy soldiers in Italy.

As the Blu-ray explains, Roth went out and shot a stunning number of shots in a very short period of time, and it all came together in this sniper-filled short. It's mostly a lot of black and white carnage »

DVD Playhouse—October 2009

By

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories »

Inglourious Basterds Movie Review

22 August 2009 8:00 PM, PDT | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

Roughly thirty years ago, Enzo G. Castellari directed Quel maledetto treno blindato.  English speakers may be more familiar with the title The Inglorious Bastards.  Now Tarantino has taken the basic idea of this film, given it a twist (not only in spelling but in story as well) and landed it in our laps, for which I am personally most grateful. For the past fifteen years, Tarantino has proven himself as a film maker of the highest caliber. His work is speckled with dynamic casts, unequaled dialog, and the ability to wedge itself into the annals of cinematic history via quotable lines »

Tarantino and the original 'Bastards'

18 August 2009 10:52 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Take your seats, class: Senior writer Chris Nashawaty is kicking off his in-depth weeklong tutorial on all things Quentin Tarantino for the latest installment of EW University. Check out our gallery of 20 Tarantino movie and movie poster faves and our Quentin Tarantino trivia quiz. The Original Bastards: ‘Guys on a mission’ Italian-style If you’re reading this, then you’re probably already hip to the fact that Quentin Tarantino has a new (and badly spelled) new film coming out on August 21 called Inglourious Basterds. And depending on your level of interest in the Pulp Fiction auteur and his well-chronicled movie-geek obsessions, you may also already know that the Brad Pitt WWII epic is loosely based on a fairly obscure (and better spelled) Italian-produced action flick from 1978 called Inglorious Bastards. I’ve seen Tarantino’s Basterds already and I think it’s absolutely fantastic -- the best thing he’s done »

Quentin Tarantino's Favorite 20 Movies From 1992 to Now

16 August 2009 9:52 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

This video is starting to make its way around the web and it's definitely worth watching. Like him or hate him, Quentin Tarantino is a very unique filmmaker, with a distinct style and particular tastes. We know that Enzo Castellari's 1978 Italian film The Inglorious Bastards was an inspiration for Tarantino's new Inglorious Basterds, but what are his other favorite films? In this video recorded for Sky Movies, Tarantino lists off his favorite 20 movies from 1992 to now. That year is so important because that's the year he became a director (with Reservoir Dogs) and these are the 20 films that he admires the most since then. From what I can tell (looking at the Death Proof footage being shown on the bottom) this was recorded during the release of Grindhouse and wasn't shot recently for Basterds. That said, I doubt there's much that has changed on here, or at »

Jumping The Gun For War Flick

13 August 2009 8:39 AM, PDT | NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news »

Pssst, want to see "The Inglorious Bastards" this weekend? It's receiving its New York theatrical premiere Friday and Saturday at midnight at the IFC Center.

Careful spellers will notice that this is not the upcoming Quentin Tarantino epic "Inglourious Basterds," which is not opening until Aug. 21, but rather the original 1978 war movie upon which it is based. And while it seems just wrong that it is premiering at a rarefied art-house cinema rather than a 42nd Street grind house, well, times have changed.

DVD Playhouse—August 2009

By

Watchmen—Director’S Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Tarantino's Muse

8 August 2009 10:47 PM, PDT | NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news »

Quentin Taranti no's "Inglourious Basterds" is actu ally a loose remake of a 1978 Italian thriller of much the same name.

In "The Inglorious Bastards," directed by Enzo Castellari (a Tarantino favorite), four condemned prisoners escape from an allied convoy when it is hit by German artillery.

Instead of fleeing across the Swiss border as they had hoped, the four find themselves "volunteering" for a suicide mission in German-occupied France.

Inglorious Bastards (Review)

7 August 2009 11:58 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Inglorious Bastards Directed by Enzo Castellari When Tarantino opened the retrospective 'The Italian King of B's' at the 2004 Venice Biennale with Joe Dante, he publicly declared his love for Italian B-cinema of the 60s and 70s, helping to shine a spotlight on many forgotten gems of Italian genre/exploitation cinema including The Inglorious Bastards. Also known under the alternate titles of Hell's Heroes, The Deadly Mission, and G. I. Bro, Enzo G. Castellari's Bastards may have been a cash in on The Dirty Dozen, but its a successful one. A film with a concept so rich that one would understand it's influence on Tarantino, it's a fast paced knock-off reeking of untapped potential, just waiting for someone to remake it. While the film's obvious low budget prevented it from becoming a North American success, it still found a significant cult following (mostly in Europe) and is reputedly one of Quentin's favorite films. »

FilmBuff Goes Online! Discover More Gems!

10 July 2009 11:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Every day seems to bring a new channel for delivering great, unheralded film right to your television or laptop. The latest is Film Buff, a video-on-demand channel run by Cinetic, and overseen by Matt Dentler, former producer of the legend that is Austin's SXSW. Variety has the details great and small.

I can't describe this channel better than Cinetic president John Sloss, who says its "as if your most film-literate friend programmed your Netflix queue and it was immediately available." They plan to offer as many as 15 first run films and classics per month, and the first slate is pretty tasty: The Carter (the Lil Wayne documentary that premiered at Sundance), Enzo Castellari's original The Inglorious Bastards, the 1984 documentary The Times of Harvey Milk, Richard Linklater's Slacker, and Michael Almereyda's New Orleans, Mon Amour. Dentler stresses that they won't be limited to Cinetic repped titles, nor will they only showcase new releases. »

“Nazis. I hate these guys.”: 15 WWII Movies Worth Watching Before You See Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.

26 May 2009 4:10 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Who knew that the Nazis -- one of the most brutal regimes in the history of brutal regimes -- would be responsible for such fun, mind-blowingly awesome entertainment? The second I see a dude in a grey German uniform and an eye patch enter the frame, I’m like ‘Whoa. That Nazi is going to provide me a great amount of entertainment this evening’. So, with Inglorious Bastards having recently premiered at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, I figured I'd put together a list of some awesome WW2 films as a resource for anyone wanting to beef up their WW2 film knowledge before checking out Tarantino's self-proclaimed 'masterpiece'. It's worth noting that I focused on older films -- pre-1980 for the most part -- and only the stories featuring Nazi's. It was tough to cut this down to 15 films, but I'm sure you all will be able to come up with »
