A group of American GIs are being shipped off to prison for a verity of infractions. While on their way there they're convoy is attacked by German soldiers and the men are able to escape. Realizing they will be put to death should the fall into either American or German hands the men decide to travel to the neutral county of Switzerland to have immunity. They pick up a German named Adolf who agrees to help them though the war zone to get to the Swiss boarder. Unfortunately, due to a break down in communications they accidentally shoot several Americans in German uniforms on their way to a secret mission. While staying with the French resistance they meet the men who were supposed to meet with the soldiers they killed. After much negotiation the two sides come to an agreement. If the gang of disgraced soldiers will complete the mission intended for the group they killed they will gain immunity for their actions.
"Inglorious Bastards" is an incredibly entertaining war film from Enzo G. Castellari, the man who brought us other exploitation films like "1990: Bronx Warriors" and "The Last Shark". Yeah, it's a rip off of "The Dirty Dozen", but thanks to Castellari's energetic direction it still manages to work very well. This is an action packed film with very little down time and lots of gunfire and explosions. The acting is superb as well. Fred Williamson is on hand as the tough Fred, spouting off tons of funny one-liners. Bo Svenson stars as the cool Sgt. Yegar, the leader of the group. The rest of the cast is create as well, each character is distinct and is well developed. The music is also fun and lively, aiding the movie tremendously. Even better, this is a total throw back to the cool and bad ass 60's war films like "The Dirty Dozen", "The Great Escape" and "Where Eagles Dare". As any film geek can tell you, that particular breed of film pretty much died out after Vietnam, but thankfully the Italians are on hand to give us a heavy dose of WWII action. This is a fine movie and I hope to see it on DVD one day (which is rumored to be on its way). This movie even has naked girls with machine guns. How can you beat that?
