When Jason Isaacs was first asked to play a captain in the newest “Star Trek” series, his answer was a flat-out no. After all, “I loved ‘Star Trek’ growing up,” he told IndieWire. “Why would I even begin to try and pitch a tent at the foothills of Mount Shatner?”
But his agents encouraged Isaacs to read the scripts for the first three episodes of the series, now streaming on CBS All Access, and that changed his mind: “It was nothing like any of the weekly morality plays I’d watched growing up. What was written, at least, was the beginning of a long, rich, very different journey.”
There was still something of a leap of faith involved, because, as Isaacs was informed, “‘Oh, you’re not in [Episode 1] and 2… and by the way, ignore 3. We’re going to rewrite it completely.’ I went, ‘Okay. So, I’m sorry, why am I reading any of this?...

The Lego Batman Movie and Return Of The Caped Crusaders have brought the light back to big screen Batman...
This article contains mild spoilers for The Lego Batman Movie and Batman: Return Of The Caped Crusaders.
Batman & Robin has a lot to answer for. Almost 20 years after its release, Joel Schumacher's brightly-coloured art nouveau confection is widely acknowledge as the nadir of the cinematic Bat-canon, even though that canon has very recently incorporated the DC Extended Universe entries, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and the Academy Award-winning* Suicide Squad.
But two decades on, it sometimes feels like the films have wound up going too far the other way. Warner Bros rightly ran in the opposite direction with the Dark Knight trilogy, which began eight years later with Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins. However, they haven't replicated the success of those films by doubling down on...

From Tribble to Andorians, we run down the 50 best alien life forms explored in the Star Trek universe.
The crews of the various iterations of Star Trek boldly went where no one has gone before — and then boldly met a whole lot of alien species.
Star Trek may be the human adventure, but there have been countless non-human beings, critters, menaces, gods, and blobs that have been introduced in the Star Trek universe. From The Original Series to The Animated Series, to The Next Generation, to Deep Space Nine, the Delta Quadrant and Voyager, to the early adventures of Enterprise, to the modern day films, Star Trek has gifted fans with many unforgettable species as the five-year mission slowly turned into five decades of first contact.
There have been vile races bred for combat, omnipotent races that use humankind as puppets, and even a bunch of cute little furry things.

Star Trek: Discovery is about to go where only one other Star Trek has gone before: it’s hiring a female to lead the series — and, in a first for the franchise, the show's main character will not be the captain (or, in the case of Deep Space Nine, the commander). Ep Bryan Fuller revealed this as well as a number of other out-of-this-world details about the space travel franchise. While at the Television Critics Association press tour, Fuller outlined much of his vision for the series, casting updates as well as where the show fits into the overall Star Trek timeline. “We’re going to be set in the Prime Universe (the William Shatner Star Trek), and we’re about 10 years before Kirk. So that gives us an opportunity to bridge the gap between Enterprise and the original series,” Fuller said. When it came to the casting of a female to fly the ship,...

June’s home entertainment releases are kicking off in grand fashion this week, as horror and sci-fi fans have a lot to look forward to with the new arrivals on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday. Scream Factory is keeping busy with a double dose of terror with their releases of The Abandoned (in conjunction with IFC Midnight) and The Funhouse Massacre, and for those of you who may have missed the supernatural thriller in theaters earlier this year, The Other Side of the Door is making its way to both Blu and DVD courtesy of 20th Century Fox.
If you consider yourself something of a Star Trek fan, Paramount is distributing the Director’s Cut of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan on Blu-ray this week as well as the complete run of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which arrives on Blu for the first time ever this Tuesday.

Home Video fans have a lot to look forward to as Paramount Home Entertainment releases a variety of Star Trek material this year. First up and arriving Tuesday, just days after its 34th anniversary is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Director’s Cut. This is the first time director Nicholas Meyer’s version of the now-classic film is available on Blu-ray.
There’s little left to say about just how good the film is and looking back, we can easily see the affection both cast and crew put into the production. There was a gamble in bringing in Harve Bennett to produce and Meyer to direct only because neither had been a part of Trek previously and Paramount needed the film to be a major success to salvage the franchise.
Thankfully, Bennett understand the genre and Meyer was a gifted novelist and filmmaker so got down to the core elements.

With the debut today of the sixth episode of the excellent web series Star Trek Continues, Cinelinx looks at one of the most outstanding fan-fiction projects being produced today, as it reaches its third year. This show is not only a superb tribute to the original Star Trek, it’s a well-made and entertaining series in its own right.
Any fan of the original Star Trek TV series should enjoy this impressive follow-up, which continues the Five Year Mission of the USS Enterprise. It picks up after the last episode of the original show “Turnabout Intruder” (The final scene of which is recreated in a short video vignette that precedes the series) and chronicles the 4th year of Captain Kirk and his crew going where no man has gone before.

From Ghostbusters 3 to a Firefly reunion, videogames are doing what movies can't...
Tie-in video games are nothing new in the moviemaking or televisual world. Through these spin-off products, we can play out adventures featuring our favourite characters without having to leave the house.
Most of the time, though, said characters don’t sound quite right. For financial reasons, you’ll often see a different voice cast step in to replace the overly expensive stars from the original film or TV version. Admittedly, these stand-ins do a very good job from time to time. But you can always tell the difference.
Sometimes, though, providing a rare treat for fans, actors can be convinced – by money, passion or a good script - to reprise their iconic film or TV characters once more for a video game adventure. Here are 32 games that featured instances of this incredibly fun phenomenon…...

Another day, another teaser trailer; and - as predicted - again the fan boys (and girls) have crawled out from their darkened coves and tweeted and generally flooded the internet. Yesterday's release of the second Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens trailer was met by the kind of enthusiastic response you'd expect.
For those of you who are still yet to see the aforementioned teaser trailer, please find below:
However, while so many rejoice - inspired by the return of one of cinema's most successful sagas - I am unsure. There are definitely moments of greatness, but I cannot shake this overwhelming feeling of worry.
But why? Why am I so bitter and twisted towards a release that, really, I should be wetter than an otter's pocket for? Well, allow me to explain below...but before I do, bear this in mind: I never grew up as a Star Wars / Star Trek fan boy.

Doctor Who, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Star Trek, The Simpsons... Juliette talks us through 10 great TV anniversary episodes...
With so many TV shows being cancelled after a season or two, it’s perhaps not surprising that those that keep going long enough to reach a significant milestone often want to mark the occasion in some way. Such celebratory episodes usually feature plenty of nods, in-jokes and references to past episodes and characters (frequently involving special guest stars from the show’s past returning in some form) and tend to be either light, sometimes metafictional comedy episodes, or extremely dramatic game-changers following which the show may never be the same again. If you’re not crying with laughter, you’ll probably be weeping at the emotional trauma inflicted by the story.

The Ice Bucket Challenge, a social media phenomenon designed to raise awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als), has taken the world by storm in the last month. Having spread like wildfire, it has encouraged people to donate to the Alsa organization which has raised nearly $100 million from the challenge alone. The trend may have its faults (in that some have only done the challenge and not donated), but there can be no doubt that it has been widely successful. Whether you’re of celebrity status or an everyday individual, you don’t have to be famous to take part in the challenge and donate some cash.
Always looking for mainstream media attention, WWE has unsurprisingly contributed to the Ice Bucket Challenge as well, resulting in hundreds of thousands of WWE Universe members, wrestlers and fans alike, raising awareness of Als. Some of our favourite sci-fi films and TV programmes have, at their core, a partnership which hooks us in. Often the two are polar opposites, sometimes they are thrown together by chance, but they connect, spark and we join them for the ride.
To celebrate the release on DVD of Lost Girl Season Two we set out to find the most enduring and endearing sci-fi partnerships around and there was no shortage of contenders. In the end we went for the duos who led us through some of our favourite adventures, and there are many more bubbling under.
Here are some of our favourites, let us know yours in the comments.
Kirk & Spock (Star Trek)
The only factor that could have prevented this pair turning up on our list of favourite sci-fi duos was DeForest Kelley’s Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy, who was always this writer’s favourite member of the USS Enterprise crew.

Seems like we here at MTV News aren't the only ones speculating about what to expect from the upcoming "Star Wars" trilogy. Last Wednesday, on Jimmy Kimmel Live, "Star Wars" fans were given the opportunity to give the "Star Trek Into Darkness" director (J. J. Abrams) a few suggestions of their own. Amongst these fans were Lando Calrissian himself (Billy Dee Williams) and the slightly misplaced, but ever-lovable Captain Kirk (William Shatner).
Sadly, most of the "Star Wars" suggestions given to Mr. Abrams were to make Princess Leia hook up with Chewbacca. While this might be...interesting... to see play out on the silver screen, we can't help but think that revisiting some of those memorable minor characters from the original trilogy would make "Star Wars VII" a masterpiece. Take Malakili for example, the heavy-set rancor keeper in the first act of "Return of the Jedi."

Jj Abrams latest installment in the Star Trek franchise successfully manages to be exciting and still actually be about something. It’s the best Trek film in a long time.
Star Trek films have been hit-and-miss over the years. Even with the original cast, led by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, the Trek franchise had a lot of peaks and valleys. This one is a peak, and it corrects most of the flaws from the previous film. The 2009 film was a good action film, but not a good Star Trek film. This film is both. It appeases both people who are looking for slam-bang action, and those of us who loved the deeper nuance of classic Trek.
The story begins with a still-raw Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) commanding the USS Enterprise with his typical reckless, rebellious style. His well-meaning technique of ignore-the-rules-and-follow-your-gut gets him in hot water with Star Fleet command,...

This has to go down as one of the best Twitter conversations of the year, maybe of the decade, at least for we who have a deep and abiding love for the original Star Trek TV series, movie series, William Shatner, Damon Lindelof, and/or Brannon Braga, writer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Voyager, and Enterprise, and the movies Star Trek: First Contact, and most important for this conversation, Star Trek: Generations, the movie in which Shatner’s Capt. Kirk dies.
Lindelof was a producer on the first J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie, and a writer on Star Trek: Into Darkness, which has already begun its world premieres. His birthday is April 24. Okay, even non-geeks should be properly prepped now, here you go with the unedited (Language Warning) conversation:

Another day, another schedule for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Next up is Day 3 - Saturday, July 14th - which is just about as chock-full of events for the horror crowd as Friday the 13th!
As always, our focus is the horror panels, but included are a few others that we think will be of interest as well. Remember that times and participants are subject to change so keep your eyes on the official Sdcc site for updates. And hopefully they'll provide a fix soon for the Sdcc smartphone app - in years past it's been extremely helpful.
10:00-11:00 Comic-Con How-To: Anatomy of a Fight Scene, Part One— Stories are about conflict, and there is no purer form of conflict than a good ol' fisticuffs-style brawl-or sword fight, laser battle, western shootout, or even two chicks pulling each other's hair. Anyone who pays attention to Star Trek lore knows that William Shatner originally offered the role of Spock's brother Sybok to James Bond actor Sean Connery in his 1989 film "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier." But apparently that wasn't even Laurence Luckingbill's biggest competition for the role. Another actor wanted to take on the renegade Vulcan, and he wasn't too happy when he lost out on the role. That actor? Leonard Nimoy. "He did not say one word to me for quite a long time, other than 'Hello,'" Luckingbill recently told Star Trek.com. "I found out later he had really, really pushed hard to have this be a double role, a dual role for him." Probably thinking back to the days of Spock in a goatee from the Mirror Universe, it seems Nimoy (who had directed the previous two films) ...

Pretty much the comic book Oscars, the 2012 nominations for the Eisner awards have been announced. There is quite are large showing from Marvel in the superhero department, not so much from DC. Surprising, considering the company’s high profile New 52 relaunch. Save for Jeff Lemire’s nomination for Best Writer, most of DC’s nomination are pre-relaunch, or from their Vertigo imprint which has been left untouched by the New 52. The nominations are usually as controversial as the Oscars, with books and whole companies being left out, much to fans, sometimes, anger and confusion.
A full list of the nominations are below, courtesy of Bleeding Cool, and the award will take place at this years San Diego Comic Con.
Best Short Story “A Brief History of the Art Form Known as Hortisculpture,” by Adrian Tomine, in Optic Nerve #12 (Drawn & Quarterly) “Harvest of Fear,” by Jim Woodring, in The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror #17 (Bongo) “The Phototaker,...

As many of you may already know, each and every year, awards distributed at San Diego Comic Con to a few select (and noteworthy) nominees who are chosen by retailers and professionals in the comic book industry. The ceremony is better known as the Eisner Awards which is now heading into its 24th year with some great talent in the running. One of the most loved titles in this year’s nominee list is Marvel’s Daredevil, picking up 6 nominations that include Best Continuing Series, Best Single Issue, Best Writer (Mark Waid), Best Cover Artist (Marcos Martin), and Best Penciller/Inker Team Marcos Martin, and Paolo Rivera/Joe Rivera). DC also scored some decent recognition with their iZombie Vertigo series, gathering 3 nominations (Cover Art, Coloring, Inker/Penciller) for the creative team.

Now CBS, but once Paramount Pictures, have had little to say about the many internet fan series based on their property of Star Trek (Hidden Frontier, Intrepid, Farragut and New Voyages: Phase II to name just a few) over the years. They clearly saw a workable, symbiotic relationship with fan productions and the mainstream TV shows and movies. As long as the fans never changed the conical nature of the established main characters (be it Tos or its many spin-offs), they were given (a mostly) free rein to expand the Star Trek Universe. But recently, someone within CBS, or over at Paramount, have suddenly raised a red alert.
It all began back in October when a fan approached Norman Spinrad, who wrote the episode The Doomsday Machine, to autograph the script for another episode of Star Trek Gene Roddenberry commissioned him to write in 1967 called He Walked Among Us. The...

DVD Playhouse—November 2011
By Allen Gardner
Tree Of Life (20th Century Fox) Terrence Malick’s latest effort is both the best film of 2011 and the finest work of his (arguably) mixed, but often masterly canon. A series of vignettes, mostly set in 1950s Texas, capture the memory of a man (Sean Penn) in present-day New York who looks back on his life, and his parents’ (Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain) troubled marriage, when word of his younger brother’s suicide reaches him. Almost indescribable beyond that, except to say no other film in history so perfectly evokes the magic and mystery of the human memory, which both crystalizes (and sometimes idealizes) the past. Like Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, this is a challenging, polarizing work that you must let wash over you. If you go along for the ride, you’re in for a unique, rewarding cinematic experience. Also available on Blu-ray disc.

Break out the Romulan ale! This fall marks the 45th anniversary of Star Trek.
Trek’s humble origins are almost hard to believe. When TV producer Gene Roddenberry pitched his “Wagon Train to the Stars” to NBC, it had already been rejected by CBS in favor of Lost in Space. Then, even after the Peacock finally did pick it up, they dismissed the pilot, starring Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike of the USS Enterprise, as “too cerebral,” and demanded a re-shoot. Only Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock survived the cast change for a new pilot built around a hammy Canadian named William Shatner,...

One thing that still causes me considerable pain is that prior to Jj Abrams‘ reboot, Star Trek had become a joke, and anyone who dared proclaim their admiration of the show was treated like a pariah and forced to sit miserably at home in their mock uniform-pj’s boldly going nowhere in particular, horribly alone. Oh, it’s cool now, because the new movie was so bad-ass, and Abrams’ name above the door made the grand old franchise accessible to a much larger general audience, at the same time as almost wiping out everything that came before it in the franchise by establishing a new history, but not so long ago it was all very different.

Yesterday, on my way home, I stopped at the giant Halloween Adventure store (at 43rd Street, off Eighth Avenue), just six blocks from the Starlog offices. Exiting in New Jersey, I checked out another Halloween Adventure in Edgewater. A few weeks ago, I had visited yet a third retail location (in Lancaster, Pennsylvania). All of this effort—as in previous years’ treks to similar seasonal stores—was to scope out just what’s in (and out) for Halloween.
There’s not that much science fiction. From that galaxy far, far away, I found Luke & Anakin Skywalker costumes as well as Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Troopers (both Clone and Storm) and perennial bestseller Darth Vader. Princess Leia was Awol (no Leia Slave Girl outfit = a national tragedy). Ditto Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, the Emperor, the Droids (these are apparently Not the Droids you want) and the Ewoks. Not one bloody Ewok!

Yesterday we told you that the first season of the classic “Trek” has arrived on Blu-ray, and now we’re back to report that all six of the “first generation” films have also made their way to HD. Remastered in high-def and sporting new audio tracks, the collection presents the “Star Trek” films as they have never been seen before.
Two different packages have been assembled, one collecting all six films and another collecting the first three. Each of the films carries over the special features from previous releases, but more importantly delivers nearly three hours of brand new bonus content specially recorded in high-def (and 14 hours total including the standard-def extra).
Check out the full specs after the jump.

Anyone that has read this site for a long time knows I am a pretty big fan of the original "Star Trek" universe. I'm talking Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty and the gang. I have reviewed all six of the last Original Series DVD releases as well as the DVD releases of Star Trek: First Contact, Generations, Insurrection, Nemesis and all four seasons of "Enterprise". Strangely enough I don't consider myself a Trekkie since I love the show, but don't have a very deep knowledge of the universe, and that's an understatement. My favorite movies from the franchise are Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home and I have no idea when was the last time I saw the original Motion Picture, Search for Spock, The Final Frontier or The Undiscovered Country. However, that will all change come May 12 as Paramount will release all six of the original Star Trek films...
