Click above for more stills The 11th Mumbai Film Festival (Mff), organized by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (Mami) began last night in the city with the opening ceremony held at Fun Cinema, Andheri. It was a night to remember with the who's who of world and Indian cinema gracing the event with their presence. The festival was inaugurated by the Information and Broadcasting Minister. Ambika Soni. A visibly impressed Mrs. Soni said, "Indian Cinema has made significant contribution to the nation's growth rate. The film industry's concerns are the concerns of my ministry." Once the action moved from the red carpet to inside the venue, the crowd was pleasantly surprised to see that the emcees for the night were the two whiz kids of Bollywood, Farhan Akhtar and Karan Johar, who were both at their enthralling best. Farhan invited the Chairman of Mami, Shyam Benegal who gave the welcome speech. »

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'. I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!
25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen. »

Editor's note: This week we're welcoming Mike Wong on board to write our weekly movie column.
Another week, another set of movies. Hard to believe it’s already nearly November when the Oscar-bait starts being dangled, and unless you didn’t see any movies last week, I’m sorry to say it’s a good week to stay home or do something not movie related.
The first of the wide releases this week is Amelia starring the swanky Hilary Swank in a movie that almost no one was waiting for. This biopic about Amelia Earhart, the first female pilot to cross the Atlantic, seems to have flown out of the Hollywood machine with every cliché and formulaic fixture intact. Currently scoring a 22% on Rottentomatoes.com, I’ll wager that it’ll probably experience some serious turbulence in the box office.

In a recent survey commissioned by Orange, in association with Orange Wednesday, it was revealed that - shock! horror! - people sometimes lie about the films they have seen….especially if someone from Orange collars them in the street and asks them what films they’ve lied about seeing. Dirty Dancing, Taxi Driver and Gone With The Wind are all in the top ten, while 1 in 5 people have apparently lied about seeing the 1972 masterpiece The Godfather. The reason for doing so is unclear (Dirty Dancing?) but it got me thinking about those films that I probably should have seen, possibly never will never see, but if someone asked me…well, I might just say I have. Why? Because I’m just so, so ashamed! The Mami committee led by Chairman Shyam Benegal and trustees Yash Chopra, Jaya Bachchan, Amit Khanna, Shabana Azmi and Amol Palekar unveiled the line-up for the 11th annual Mumbai Film Festival (Mff), which consists of 200 films from 56 countries. All of the international films to be screened in the main sections of this year's festival will be Indian, Asian or world premieres. Mff is a Reliance Big Entertainment initiative and has the distinction of being the only international film festival in India to be organized by an independent body of practicing film professionals. Information and Broadcasting Minister of India Ambika Soni will be the chief guest at the opening ceremony, to be held at the Fun Cinema, Andheri on October 29. Shashi Kapoor will be honoured with the Indian Lifetime achievement award along with legendary Indian director-producer Yash Chopra who will be felicitated by Fiapf, the international federation of film producers association. »

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. If you haven’t seen Richard Stanley’s 1990 futuristic action flick “Hardware,” then shame on you. Thanks to the fine, upstanding folks at Severin Films, this hyper violent sci-fi thriller is available on Region 1 DVD for the very first time. To help promote this fantastic release, co-stars Lemmy (Taxi Driver) and Iggy Pop (Angry Bob) have reprised their respective roles for a series of kick-ass promotional clips, both of which are genuinely amusing. Even if you haven’t had the pleasure of investigating the film for yourself, they’re still a blast to watch. My advice: Pick up “Hardware,” as well as Stanley’s underrated horror flick “Dust Devil,” as soon as possible. They’re both definitely worth the investment. »

Actor Gerard Butler loves showing off his bum on the big screen - because he's proud of his finest asset.
But the Scot fears moviegoers think an a**-baring scene is written into his contract - just so he can get naked.
He tells WENN, "I love to show my rear end in roles. I fear it's becoming a bit of a habit, a tradition that I have to show my a** in every movie that I can."
Butler bares all in new film Law Abiding Citizen and admits that scene was very much in keeping with his character in the film.
He adds, "This was always a great scene in the movie and actually speaks volumes about this character and part of the wackiness and unexpectedness that happens... He's completely unpredictable and so when he strips off it makes sense.
"I mean there's a genius behind that and if it means I have to bare my ass again than so be it.
"I've always had a skinny, tight a** but I had to bulk up for this film; I was inspired by watching (Robert) DeNiro in Taxi Driver during the scene where he's doing the push-ups and he's so cut. A lot more is said in that than somebody just being big and kind of a meathead."
But Butler admits he doesn't always enjoy the work that comes as he prepares to bulk up for a movie role: "Whenever I make those decisions to be naked, I go, 'Oh s**t here's another three months of being on a diet and getting that body back!'" »

Villainy isn't just found in an evil plot, a straight razor, or a hockey mask. Sometimes it's a crippling state of mind and place that sucks the soul out of its heroes and heroines. It can be Purgatory, it can be hell, it can be a mental asylum, or it can be a bustling metropolis.
