The first decade of the new millennium has come to an end, and that means it is now time for film sites all over the web to begin posting their various retrospectives and lists recalling the decade that was. I generally as a rule dislike such lists because they are always so subjective. Then I said screw it and took it upon myself to do one of my own naming the ten worst horror movies of the past decade. Besides, people love bitching on the Internet about lists like this, and who am I to deny readers yet another excuse to get into pointless flame wars over personal opinions.
Of course, this list is just my personal opinion which is not legally binding ... unless Proposition 304 passes. And we all pray that it will.
I set two rules when putting this list together: Only horror movies that received fairly wide theatrical »

The Satellites (formerly Golden) have announced their 2009 nominations for what it's worth. And you might be screaming "not very much".
It's hard to know what to make of this Golden Globe splinter group. There is never much of a narrative thread in their nominations. You can't sense from year to year a type of film they like or whatnot. Which makes them feel a bit suspect. They also do very strange things which you're about to see if you read their nominations. They never get much attention and yet they keep plugging away. This year they were especially kind to 2012 (who knew?), Nine and The Stoning of Soraya M. But they were downright rude to the sci-fi drama Moon which received zero nominations despite their lack of aversion to sci-fi films. I mention this because the moon is a natural satellite and the Satellites are artificial. Maybe they're jealous. What they're orbiting we know not. »

What was once old always becomes new again. Right now the upper management at ABC are close to ordering a pilot for a new casting of Charlie's Angels, the classic 1970s action-adventure hour-long series beloved by little girls and older boys for completely different reasons.
When it came out in 1976, Angels was an instant hit and cemented Farrah Fawcett (then called Fawcett-Majors due to her nupitals with Six Million Dollar Man star Lee Majors) as the last poster queen. While Ff only starred in the show for a season before trying to play her cards as a movie star (Saturn 3? Sunburn? Man, it's pretty bad when you're only decent big screen performance from the 1970s was in Logan's Run), the show proved to have legs enough for a six season run. Drew Barrymore dusted it off and McG reimagined the concept slightly more tongue-in-cheek for the Charlie's Angels movies »

This weeks picks start off with one of the greatest post apocalyptic (not to mention scifi) films of all time, Logan's Run (amazon). That's right, it's dropping on blu-ray.
Next off we have a locally made fantasy Ink (amazon) which is supposed to be fantastic. Unfortunately I haven't seen it yet but I plan to remedy that soon. Then we have Yam Laranas's redux of his own film, The Echo (amazon), a sort of supernatural horror which I've seen and I have to say it's great, at least till the ending.
Then we have some Mexican arthouse fare which did quite well on the festival circuit and is finally seeing a R1 release. Called Lake Tahoe (amazon), it's about a teenager and the strange going-ons in his small town.
Now for the Japanese and Takashi Miike fans, there's a special edition of Zebraman (amazon) dropping. Third grade teacher does superhero. »

Not much in the way of new DVD releases this week unless you're a Pixar fan, but then hey... who isn't a Pixar fan? Up is by far the biggest release of the week (so big that no one really wanted to go up against it) and I fully expect to hear reports of it breaking Blu-ray sales records at some point in the near future. Cars and Monsters, Inc. are also out on Blu-ray this week, along with both Heat and Red Heat. (That's called synergy.) Other new discs include The Ugly Truth starring Gerard Butler and Katherin Heigl, Spread starring Ashton Kutcher, and the 2008 Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Ballast. What will you be renting or buying this week? Up [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) The Ugly Truth [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) Ballast [5] In The Loop [6] (Canada only) Spread [7] (DVD, Blu-ray [8]) Ink [9] The Echo [10] (DVD, Blu-ray [11]) American Virgin [12] Summer's Moon [13] The Accidental Husband [14] The Merry Gentleman [15] Mamma Mia! »

It is Tuesday, which means that it is time once again for me to avoid writing my long-running column, This Week in Blu-ray. But this week, unlike the past two weeks, I just cannot get around the sheer awesomeness of the HD releases hitting your local retailers. Which is why I'm currently working through my official report for later today -- including reviews of Godzilla (1998), Logan's Run and The Negotiator. But before I get to all of that, I wanted to file this very special edition of This Week in Blu-ray dedicated to the three releases from Walt Disney Home Entertainment, a trifecta of beautiful Pixar movies coming at you in 1080p. Needless to say, I'm recommending that you pay close attention and quite possibly that you pick up all three of these titles. We being with Pixar's tenth (and most recent film) Up. After last week's jam-packed release schedule led by "G.I. Joe," we're given an opportunity to breath today with only two new theatrical titles coming to market, along with an assortment of action-filled catalog offerings making their way to Blu-ray. This is your DVD Report for Tuesday, November 9.
Disney's Pixar was flying high after the critically and commercially acclaimed "Wall-e," so naturally they looked to the skies for their next animated outing, "Up." The film focuses on Carl Fredricksen, an elderly shut-in who aims to pay homage to his late wife by relocating to the top of a South American paradise the couple had always dreamed of visiting. Equipping his home with hundreds of helium balloons, the house lifts off its foundation and floats away, inadvertently taking with it a young wilderness scout who grows attached to the grumpy septuagenarian at the start of a grand adventure.

Up I just reviewed the Blu-ray version of this release and may I just say it is worth every penny. Pixar films look phenomenal in high-definition and the word "flawless" is by no means a stretch. Along with my review I have also included a clip from the new animated short "Dug's Special Mission," so just click here for the video and full review details.
Oh, and if you want to buy it in store you can get a $10 off coupon right here. Monsters, Inc. Yup, it's Pixar week on Blu-ray as Monsters, Inc. joins Up as well as a gift pack version of Cars and this one too manages to impress greatly. There are a few new features, which I detailed in my review and I also included a sneak peek at the new roundtable feature in my review right here. »

Last week, we announced the release of the big screen version of one of the Hasbro toy company's most beloved franchises, G.I. Joe; it's only fitting that this week we announce the release of the animated series' complete collection. And it's impressive. On top of that, we've got a couple of hot new releases as well, including Pixar's Up and the indie hit Ballast. Sci-fi fans will enjoy the high definition re-release of Logan's Run, while baseball fans will find literally hours upon hours of entertainment in the Official World Series Film Collection. I know I'm a day late with this, but it's for good reason. The problem this week wasn't that I didn't watch any movies, it was simply that I watched too many that I couldn't cover with this Sunday column for one reason or another. As a result, I waited one day so I could watch one of my Netflix selections that arrived on Friday so I would have at least something to add to the conversation before I let you guys run wild in the comments.
However, just in an effort for full disclosure, I watched Up once again on Blu-ray as well as the Blu-ray copies of Monsters, Inc. and Cars all in preparation for my reviews, which I just finished and will publish on Tuesday. I also watched the Bruno Blu-ray and on top of all that I saw A Christmas Carol (review), Pirate Radio, The Fourth Kind »

Before we get into this week's releases I thought I would alert you to an upcoming 50% off Criterion Collection titles at Barnes and Nobles beginning on November 10 and running for two weeks. The full details, and a $5 off coupon, can be found in the DVD Talk forums.
Wings of Desire (Criterion Collection) This is a huge week for major title releases on Blu-ray as Criterion's release of Wim Wenders's Wings of Desire is just the first of three titles I reviewed and most likely blew my word count for the next two weeks trying to get all of my thoughts squared away.
As for this title specifically, it was my first time seeing it and as it played on and on I began to enjoy it more and more. However, if you read my lengthy review, you will »

Bluewater Comics has announced a new comic series based on the dystopian sci-fi novel Logan's Run. Best known for having inspired the cult '70s movie of the same name, Logan's Run tells the story of a futuristic society that prevents overpopulation by killing everyone once they reach a certain age. The novel features Logan, an agent whose job it is to hunt down those who refuse to be killed, who finds himself unwilling to die at his appointed time. Co-Writer and Director Jared Hess hit the ground running with his 2004 breakout hit, the ode to nerddom, Napoleon Dynamite. He followed that up with Jack Black in the wrestling comedy, Nacho Libre. Now, with his latest feature, Gentlemen Broncos, he is on to the science fiction world that he has long admired. Writing with his wife and collaborator, Jerusha Hess, Hess also took inspiration from a 14-year-old cousin who lives and breathes science fiction. As with all of Hess's films, Gentlemen Broncos is slightly autobiographical and is filmed in familiar terrain, the mountains and valleys of Utah, where Hess and his family live.

Back in May, Bluewater Productions announced plans to publish a comic book series based on the "Logan's Run," a series of science-fiction novels that unfolded in a dystopian society where population is controlled by euthanizing anyone over the age of 21.
Originally authored by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson in 1967, the first novel spawned several sequels and spin-offs in various forms, including a comic book adaptation, a television series and a 1976 film starring Michael York. (Warner Brothers is currently planning a remake of the film directed by "Tron" director Joe Kosinski.) And in January, the "Logan's Run" universe will also have a comic book sequel, too.
Written by Paul Salamoff with interior art by Daniel Gete, Bluewater's "Logan's Run" series will be based on a story by William F. Nolan, Paul Salamoff and Jason Brock. The publisher has offered Splash Page readers the exclusive first look at all four covers of the debut issue, »

"My main goal is to open minds and eliminate taboos." -- 2033 director Francisco Laresgoiti
2033 is a big, bold and beautifully designed new science fiction film from Mexico. Not a sentence you're probably used to reading I'm sure. In fact, Mexico has only recently started putting themselves on the international genre map with projects like Sleep Dealer (review), but now that newcomer Francisco Laresgoiti has unleashed this allegorically rich dystopian adventure onto the public I think it's safe to assume that the nation is making a major bid to put their own unique stamp on scifi filmmaking.
Considering the film is equal parts Gattaca, Thx-1138, Logan's Run, Fahrenheit 451, Romeo and Juliet and even Dune (to list only a handful of the many nods and references throughout the film), the word "unique" might strike some »

Los Angeles — Between "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Nacho Libre," writer/director Jared Hess has carved out a unique Hollywood niche fueled by quirky characters, sincere plotlines and obscenity-free outrageousness. Now, the 30-year-old filmmaker is leaving his tater tots and stretchy pants behind but still making waves with "Gentlemen Broncos," an October comedy whose trailer already has the look of an instant classic.
The flick stars Michael Angarano as a student whose work gets ripped off by a hilariously over-the-top sci-fi writer played by Jemaine Clement, giving birth to a bizarre substory starring the incomparable Sam Rockwell. To help us finish out this week's Fall Movie Preview festivities, we caught up with Hess to discuss the inspiration of Super Dave Osbourne, how adding "anous" to the »
