When the Westworld TV series premiered on October 2, 2016, it became a massive hit for HBO. The series was an adaptation of the 1973 cult classic movie of the same name by Michael Crichton and its 1976 sequel, FutureWorld, but borrowed only the concept while creating its own fictional world with new characters and concepts. The original series was created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, who developed the story while exploring different concepts related to artificial intelligence and life, humanity, free will, and the like.
The series aired for four seasons, but while the series has always been met with, more or less, positive reviews, as the story progressed, the plot became less comprehensible and it strayed away from the first season so much that it did not seem like the same series anymore. Although Nolan claimed that he had a five-season plan for the series, HBO canceled it in 2022 after four...

This Westworld article contains spoilers.
William, in his customary black suit, is giving a speech in front of a group of high-rollers at the end of Westworld season 4’s second episode, “Well Enough Alone.” He commands the stage, cracks a few jokes, then announces not just a resumption of theme park activities, but a new golden age. For Delos? Perhaps. Or maybe, William is just giving away the theme of Delos’ newest historical attraction.
While William speaks to the assembled, Maeve and Caleb step off of the train that sped them from Los Angeles to the middle of nowhere, exiting the dystopian future and stepping back in time and into a town called Temperance. If the awesome selection of cool hats didn’t give the game away immediately, the environment Maeve and Caleb enter should. Temperance is nothing short of a full-scale recreation of pop culture’s version of the Roaring ’20s,...

Amazon Prime’s new releases in June 2020 is fairly lacking in original material. That’s to be expected for a streaming service that focuses on quality over quantity to begin with now going through a pandemic content crunch.
Standup special Gina Brillon: The Floor Is Lava, Joseph Gordon-Levitt film 7500, and Pete the Cat season 2 are the only originals arriving this month. And that’s fine as Amazon is about to be home to one of 2019’s most fun films. That’s right – Knives Out makes its debut on June 12. It might be awhile before we get to see the next Benoit Blanc mystery so hopefully this will tide us over.
June 1 also sees the arrival of Dirty Dancing, Kingpin, and the tragically underrated Sex Drive. It’s not the most impressive month Amazon has ever had, but at least you still get free shipping.

There are a lot of popular streaming platforms to choose from, but Hulu has always stood alongside Netflix as one of the two essentials for households looking for diversity in content. In the past, they’ve been known for focusing more heavily on newer television content, while Netflix has always offered a larger selection of sought-after films. But now, it looks like Hulu’s June lineup is only going to continue the service’s recent trend of providing high quality movies to bring itself in line with their competitor.
First up, you can get wholesome with Mr. Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, which tells the story of an investigative journalist who learns some hard life lessons from one of television’s most beloved personalities. You can then supplement that wholesomeness with My Girl and My Girl 2 for some wonderful 90s nostalgia.

June 2020 is set to be a big month for the whole streaming Disney family. Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.
This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.
June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

Peter Fonda was a counterculture film icon who gave John Lennon a bad trip but a great song.
Actor and director Peter Fonda died of respiratory failure due to lung cancer at his Los Angeles home on Friday, Aug. 16, his manager, Alan Somers, announced via Variety. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter and star of Easy Rider was 79.
“It is with deep sorrow that we share the news that Peter Fonda has passed away at his home in Los Angeles surrounded by family,” the Fonda family said in a statement. “In one of the saddest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our hearts. And, while we mourn the loss of this sweet and gracious man, we also wish for all to celebrate his indomitable spirit and love of life. In honor of Peter, please raise a glass to freedom.

When it comes to Westworld, the maze never really ends. During this year's Super Bowl, HBO dropped a new trailer for season two of the wildly popular series. But this wasn't just any old teaser. A secret message was hidden at 0:33. It's a message in binary code that spells out 52.89.126.34, which leads to the website delosdestinations.com. From there, the secrets, information, and excitement only plunge deeper.
On the Experience page, we see all the options for Delos theme parks. There is, of course, Westworld, but then there are a whopping five additional parks listed after that! Naturally, all the slides are broken, but some careful freeze-framing on slide two reveals a single snapshot of Samurai World. As we see in the "Virtù e Fortuna" episode in season two, there also appears to be a park inspired by imperial British rule of India, including plenty of robot tigers. But...

Man vs. Nature never turns out well in horror; certainly nothing past the ‘50s terrors of looming lizards/shellfish caused by radiation/radiation. And while the ‘70s switched the vibe into eco-horror, the genre never lost sight of the nagging realization that when we push against the elements, they push back hard. So it is with Saul Bass’ Phase IV (1974), a weird and riveting sci-fi thriller that proves (as if it was needed) ants are way smarter than man.
Released in the U.S. in September by Paramount, Phase IV was not a financial success, and only inspired middling critical thought, at best. Lying somewhere between 2001’s cosmic tone poem and a Bert I. Gordon schlocker, audiences chose to ignore the cerebral looking for a visceral experience that isn’t really there; nevertheless, this uneasy mixture results in a unique experience far apart from other When Animals Attack films.

HBO’s “Westworld” has made a name for itself as a 22-time Emmy nominated show that garnered the network’s highest ever first season viewership. But the intricate plots, haunting writing and western-future hybrid production design of the genre program do not exist in a vacuum.
“Westworld” showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan took inspiration from several other works to build their perfect dystopian theme park, including — but not limited to — the show’s cinematic source material. Here are some of the projects that influenced the hit series.
“Westworld” and “Futureworld”
While the plot of the premium cabler drama is only loosely based on the plots of its filmic source material, several homages and easter eggs to the movies are planted throughout the series. The show does borrow directly from the Michael Crichton films’ original concepts, which include a western theme park run by robotic gunslingers, cowboys, and natives. However,...

After the ‘Mad Max’ franchise gained prominence in the early ‘80s, there was a horde of rip-off films that were chasing the success of George Miller’s film. There are so many of these films, from Europe and the United States, that the “Mad Max Rip-Off Film” is practically its own genre. Now, in 2018, after the massive success of 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” we are about to enter a new age of the “Mad Max Rip-Off Film.” At least you might think so after you watch the trailer for “Future World.”

For those that might recognize the title and get excited, we’re sorry to say that “Future World” isn’t a “Westworld” spin-off film, unlike the 1976 film “Futureworld.” Instead, this is an absolutely crazy looking post-apocalyptic film starring James Franco, Milla Jovovich, Suki Waterhouse,...

It’s easy to empathize with the Writer’s Guild of America, whose members may soon stop working on film and TV scripts if there’s no new agreement with studios by May 1. They’re fighting for larger contributions to the WGA’s health insurance plan, which has been running at a deficit for years, while studios want higher premiums, benefit cuts, and an increased annual earnings minimum for writers to qualify for coverage. However, there’s one group with nothing to gain, and everything to lose, if a lengthy strike hits Hollywood: below-the-line crew.

Gareth Edwards grew up dreaming he would follow in the footsteps of his hero Steven Spielberg: He’d go to film school and make a short that would gain him entry into Hollywood.
“That never happened because my short film was rubbish,” said Edwards, who was guest on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit.
Beyond his film being bad, Edwards realized the competition to be a director had multiplied since Spielberg had started out and it took more than a good short to get a foot in the door in Hollywood. Edwards’ first short, which he made with a his computer animator roommate, was one of the first student works ever to mix CGI with live action. The experience opened Edwards’ eyes to the computer as being the future of filmmaking and he now saw his path to Hollywood could be to make his own films from home, doing the editing and effects himself.

It was animated “The Boss Baby” (20th Century Fox) vs. manga remake “Ghost in the Shell” (Paramount) starring Scarlett Johansson at the weekend box office.
As expected, the week’s two new wide releases combined to gross just under $70 million, but with a shocker: the latest DreamWorks Animation release took the lion’s share of that total. $100-million actioner “The Ghost in the Shell” turned out to be yet another pixel-packed movie to be met by blah critical and domestic audience response. Foreign will have to save the day on this one.
Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” (Disney) barely missed its third #1 weekend, but propelled the Top Ten box office to a 37 per cent ($43 million) improvement over last year (when nothing much was going on). The year-to-date uptick remains a steady five per cent. And that’s ahead of the expected huge April 14 opening for F. Gary Gray’s...

It's Time! Most everyone is on vacation, I've been doing straight news for a week, and Kellvin is a lot less scary than I thought he was. My leash has been cut, and it's about damn time I slip in my Insane Westworld theory. To give a little history here, we must first understand what caused me to have this opinion I shall produce for your hopeful reading pleasure. I must also issue the warning, that after reading this you will be left with more questions than answers.
If you don't know, the HBO Westworld series was based on a 1973 movie, of the same name, written and directed by Michael Crichton which had humans "guests" visit an old west world populated by robots, or "hosts", where the humans could fulfill all of their fantasies and desires. Westworld the Prequel is over!
For fans of the movie, that's essentially what happened throughout the first season. Culminating with Westworld Season 1 Episode 10, the inmates are ruling the asylum, and there's really nobody left to stop them.
The creators weren't kidding when they alluded that all of the questions would be answered, and we got a delightful, violent push into Westworld Season 2.
If you recall, after Westworld Season 1 Episode 9, I didn't even bother distinguishing between William and The Man in Black anymore. There was simply no way they were not the same man.
After stomping around behind Dolores, then practically stomping On Dolores in his attempt to get her to show him the end of the maze, he finally revealed he was, in fact, the true love she was expecting to come rescue her.
I knew the driving force behind his anger would be that Dolores, the one he fell in love with,...

Warning: Spoilers For Westworld Ahead. How old is Robert Ford? It’s a question that has been plaguing me since Anthony Hopkins first appeared on screen, talking to the broken down host Old Bill (Michael Wincott), in the Westworld premiere. The confusion has only deepened with each successive piece of information revealed about Ford’s past. We know Sir Anthony himself is 78, but that means little and less in a future where we’ve cured any and all ailments that currently control the human population. But now that we know the child robot (Oliver Bell) is indeed a young version of Ford, I’m more convinced than ever that the creator of Westworld is older than he appears. There are many incongruities to Robert Ford’s life. The fact his robot family is dressed in ‘ye olden’ clothes despite little chance* of them running into other guests or hosts. Ford...

Few ideas survive the times that spawned them, but Westworld, the 1973 Michael Crichton movie about an Old West amusement park populated by lifelike robots, is good enough that Hollywood's been coming back to it for more than 40 years. The original film, which was MGM's biggest box-office success of the year, spawned a sequel and a short-lived TV series; talk of a remake had been floated around for years, with everyone from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Quentin Tarantino being namedropped around the project at various points. (There was even a porn version,...

James Franco is one of those multi-faceted stars that can do pretty much anything. As a writer / director / actor, Franco has dabbled in each of those three pools of talent, and to varying degrees of success. In the case of Future World, James Franco will be hitting all three posts, and he'll be doing so with a cast that includes Lucy Liu and Snoop Dogg in its ranks. The casting news came down today from a report in The Hollywood Reporter, which informed of the latest round of casting for Future World's effective ensemble. Also along for the ride are cast members Milla Jovovich, Method Man, and Suki Waterhouse . just to name a few. With a cast like that, the story to Future World ought to be just as different and daring. Sure enough the film sounds like it's right in that weird wheelhouse Franco loves to occupy, as...

James Franco's upcoming post-apocalyptic thriller Future World adds Milla Jovovich to its cast...
The dystopian future envisioned by James Franco in his indie production Future World now has a new villlain. Franco, who is co-directing with screenwriter Thierry Cheung and starring in the film himself, has confirmed that Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) will be venturing into a role that is against type for her: a shady drug lord.
Jovovich’s latest project is Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, the last episode of the franchise that hits theaters January 2017. She also recently appeared as Katinka in Zoolander 2.
Future World finds a nobly born boy wading through the refuse of a post-apocalyptic society. Desperate to find medication for his terminally ill mother, he braves a war-shattered world plagued by filth and disease alongside his bodyguard. Even then, the cure he seeks may be nothing more than a...

It's a land run by an evil warlord with nefarious plans up his sleeve involving a robot assassin disguised as a gorgeous woman. Jovovich is reportedly set to play a drug lord.
No other cast members have been revealed yet beyond Franco who'll also have a role. Franco created the story while Bruce Thierry Cheung, Jay Davis and Jeremy Cheung are penning the screenplay.

The last thing we heard from James Franco was the embarrassingly brief announcement that he would direct a film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian, only to discover later that same day that Franco didn't actually have the rights to the book, so that project is now scrapped.
But as you might expect from someone so prolific (if you only know him as an actor, you're missing out on a ton of work he's been doing over the past few years), Franco is already on to the next project, a sci-fi movie he came up with called Future World. Deadline reports that The Fifth Element and Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich will co-star with Franco in the movie, which is set "in a post-apocalyptic world that is plagued with heat, ravaged by disease and crippled by chronic war." In terms of imaginative premises, Future World must surely rank among the most eye-catching, mind-boggling of all. The dystopian concept, which was originated by James Franco, is set to roll before cameras, and has now added Milla Jovovich to the cast. Franco will co-direct with Bruce Thierry Cheung, as well as serving as a cast member himself, and Jovovich will play against type as a villainous drug lord.

This summer, Disney wants to take you on a trip to the world of the future...only as imagined by the world the of 1960s. A shiny coat of chrome can’t hide the retro-future designs featured in the full-length trailer. So let George Clooney whisk you away to a magical place (not Tahiti) of yesterday's tomorrow where anything is possible. This movie has actually piqued my interest by casting a science-minded teen girl as the female lead. However! I stand by my convictions that this whole thing is an elaborate ruse designed by Disney to give Imagineers solid footing to rebuild the floundering Tomorrowlands of Disneyland and Disney World around. Right now both are suffering from an identity crisis where the retro-future motif feels dated, leading to a mishmash of crumbling mid-20th century ideas of the future mixed with rides dedicated to Buzz Lightyear and Stitch. The trailer...

Two Filmmakers Are Scoring With Films About Soccer
As reported on by contributing blogger Benjamín Harguindey at St. Themo Films in Argentina, Álex de la Iglesia’s biopic of Argentine footballer Lionel Messi will receive an official screening on July 2 in Río de Janeiro, right in the middle of the FIFA World Cup’s “round of sixteen”. Argentina is playing against Switzerland the day before for a spot in the World Cup’s quarter-finals, so it remains to be seen whether the movie will act as a beaming celebration or a conciliatory send-off for Argentina’s national team, which Messi captains.
The “docufiction”, simply titled “Messi”, is directed by Spanish filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia, best known as the creator of cult films like “The Day of the Beast” (1995) and “Ferpect Crime” ( 2004), and more recently “Witching and Bitching” (2013). Spanish production studio Mediapro is behind the movie. Judging from the trailer, it looks like the director’s outrageous style has been dropped in favor of a more serious tone. De la Iglesia traveled earlier in January to Messi’s hometown Rosario, where he shot at Messi’s former home, his primary school and the Newell’s Old Boys Stadium where he used to play.
The movie, written by coach Jorge Valdano, is equal parts documentary – interviewing footballers like Javier Mascherano and Gerard Piqué, and national team coach Alejandro Sabella – and dramatization, specifically of Messi’s childhood and road to fame and glory. Spanish child actor Marc Balaguer will play young Messi. Besides the World Cup premiere no commercial release dates have been given for Spain or Argentina, but in the meantime here’s the trailer – but first read the original article here: http://ow.ly/yxaTL
Meanwhile, the second film, still to be made, will be produced by Dan Mirvisch of Bugeater Films (Mirvish is also co-founder of the Slamdance Film Festival) who has optioned the project to be written and directed by Darryl Wharton-Rigby.
Their scoop on this hot topic shows how some nimble indie filmmakers can move quicker than anyone in Hollywood. While Hollywood shut down yesterday morning to celebrate USA's 0-1 loss as a win, it was a couple indie filmmakers who saw the real story in the World Cup and outmaneuvered Hollywood to the punch. One other thing they missed is what a truly global project this is, spanning four continents (so far): S. America, Africa obviously, but with producers in the U.S., and an African/American director/writer in Japan.
Darryl Wharton-Rigby writes for Indiewire blog Shadow & Act sometimes, and used to be a programmer for the Maryland Film Fest. Wharton-Rigby (“Homicide: Life on the Streets”), is also an award-winning writer who most recently wrote and directed the indie movie “Stay,” which was filmed in Japan.

Suffice it here to state that the debacle of Ghana’s Black Stars boycotting practice unless their promised bonus was paid inspired the soccer-themed thriller.
Ghana's government sent more than $3m in cash by plane to Brazil to pay the appearance fees owed to the national team at the World Cup. Deputy Sports Minister Joseph Yamin told Ghanaian radio station Citi FM the players "insisted" on cash payments.
He added: "The government had to mobilize the money and a chartered flight to Brazil."
Wharton-Rigby's script will follow a courier who flies into Brazil with $3 million cash. Things go awry when the courier is ambushed on the way to make the drop, leaving him less than 12 hours to recover the stolen money.
Ghana’s Black Stars have now gone home from Brazil, having lost 2-1 to U.S. and then tied 2-2 with Germany. But losing 2-1 against Portugal eliminated them from the games.
Another bonus row is ongoing involving Nigeria. The Super Eagles, who are due to play France Monday June refused to train on Thursday over fears they would not receive their bonus payments from the Nigerian Football Federation.
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan assured players on Friday that the money would be paid.
There was a similar issue with Cameroon, whose players refused to board their plane to South America because of a row over appearance fees. They arrived for the World Cup a day later than scheduled.
The issue is not a new one - Togo went on strike over bonus money at the 2006 tournament in Germany and FIFA was forced to intervene.
Jérôme Valcke, Secretary General of the international football federation (FIFA) says that something needs to be done.
"Future World Cups will ask the national associations to provide us with their agreements with their players to make sure that this kind of episode does not happen again," he said.
Valcke himself was found guilty in 2004 by a New York court when he was Marketing Director of FIFA for negotiating sponsor agreements with the rival Visa, despite the existing agreement of FIFA conducted with the long-time partner Mastercard and thus violated the right of first negotiation of MasterCard. Because of this, the FIFA was fined Us $60 million.
But all this is another story, yet to be made into a movie.

The gimmick – the character a wrestler portrays each and every night they step inside the squared circle. Sometimes the character is just an extension of who the person actually is. Other times, WWE creative can come up with a very elaborate persona for the wrestler to take on. Each person on this list went on to bigger and better things, and thankfully found a successful gimmick, because before then, they were given some difficult identities to take on. Every single superstar on this list went on to capture a world championship, but it is highly doubtful that they would have done so if they kept their former gimmicks.
Here are eight embarrassing early gimmicks WWE World Champions would like to forget. Feel free to join in the conversation with your own terrible gimmicks by commenting below, or by connecting with me on twitter, @HeisenGoldberg.

HBO has come away with a huge commitment with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot that will bring a new drama, inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1973 sci-fi movie Westworld, to the cable network. This will be Bad Robot’s first project taken to a big wig like HBO, having only dealt with broadcast networks in the past. Westworld comes from Person of Interest creator Jonathon Nolan, producer Jerry Weintraub, and Warner Bros. TV. HBO has given the project a pilot commitment, but I don’t see how they wouldn’t order it to series with names like Nolan and Abrams attached to it.
According to Deadline, Nolan and Burn Notice’s Lisa Joy wrote Westworld, a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin. Nolan will direct the pilot. This will be the second series inspired by the original Westworld, which starred Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin, and James Brolin.

Jj Abrams is to remake the classic sci-fi movie Westworld for television.
The adaptation of the 1973 thriller is being developed by Abrams and Person of Interest creator Jonathan Nolan for cable network HBO, reports TVLine.
Westworld starred Yul Brynner as a rogue android in a futuristic Western-themed amusement park who goes on a killing spree.
Nolan is reworking the film for TV alongside his wife, Burn Notice writer/producer Lisa Joy, and will also direct the pilot episode.
Abrams is attached as an executive producer alongside Bryan Burk (Revolution) and Jerry Weintraub (Behind the Candelabra).
Another television series based on Westworld - titled Beyond Westworld - aired just three episodes on CBS in 1980, but was nominated for two Emmy awards.
A film sequel to the original movie, Futureworld, was also released to cinemas in 1976.
