Ed Sheeran played his first U.S. gig since September at Dodger Stadium on Thursday night, in support of the organization’s Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation efforts to improve education, healthcare and homelessness in the city.
This year’s Blue Diamond Gala — dubbed the “Party for L.A.” — kicked off with a set by Grammy-winning DJ Anderson .Paak taking the centerfield stage as his alter ego, DJ Pee .Wee, to spin an all-vinyl set that featured hits from Boyz II Men, Justin Timberlake and Missy Elliott.
Dodgers and SportsNet L.A. reporter Kirsten Watson then introduced Dodgers owner Mark Walter, who stunned the crowd with a $50 million donation from the squad’s ownership group — with a vow to double that sum should his heavily favored and star-studded team win the 2024 World Series.
“It’s important we give back and help the most important causes in Los Angeles,” Walter said, stressing he wanted to ensure the L.

Lionsgate’s Vestron Video Collector’s Series is getting a Steelbook upgrade, at least when it comes to David Cronenberg‘s controversial feature debut, Shivers.
Shivers becomes available on Steelbook® on March 5, 2024, exclusively at Walmart.
In Shivers, “The residents of a suburban high-rise apartment building are being infected by a strain of parasites that turn them into mindless, sex-crazed fiends out to infect others by the slightest sexual contact.” The cast includes Paul Hampton, Lynn Lowry, and Barbara Steele.
Cronenberg blends sex and violence in a nightmarish parasitic outbreak in a high-rise apartment complex. Scientifically engineered parasites meant to replace functioning human organs instead renders their hosts sexually violent, hellbent on spreading their infection to others. How the pulsing worm-like parasites infect provides a lot of gnarly body horror moments, including a nightmare bathtub scene.
Check out the Steelbook artwork and full list of features included in the release below.

Love it, hate it, or love to hate it, Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn has left an impression on viewers. With its acerbic (and maybe muddled) allegory about social and economic class in the UK, the movie is a big twisty swing from the writer-director of Promising Young Woman. It also features star Barry Keoghan going there. In some scenes, there constitutes prancing around a luxurious manor in his birthday suit, galloping as free and liberated as a baby elephant charging a watering hole.
In others, there consists of the literal water (and other fluids therein) pooling around the hole of a bathtub. You know the scene: After Felix (Jacob Elordi), the wealthy patron and object of obsession for Keoghan’s Oliver Quick, is spied pleasuring himself in the bath, Ollie sneaks in afterward to slurp up the remainder that didn’t go down the drain. It’s disgusting, off-putting, and supposedly “titillating,...

Ninety-seven times out of 100, a movie makes its moral judgments for us. Yes, there’s a haunting ambiguity to films like “The Conformist” or “Taxi Driver” or “Tár.” But when was the last time you saw moral ambiguity in a genre movie? Even the “Mad Max” films, in their visionary savagery, draw a clean line between nobility and treachery, speed-demon heroism and outlaw selfishness. But “Concrete Utopia” is a dystopian disaster movie with a difference. This year’s South Korean entry in the Oscar competition for best international feature, it places its characters in a desperate, scary, do-or-die situation and then refuses to tell the audience what to think about them. It’s a fractious, blood-soaked drama about the will to survive that feels like “Earthquake” crossed with “Lord of the Flies.” What’s gripping is that you watch it and think, “If I were in this movie, what would I do?...

Sung Kang, who is best known for playing the fan favorite role of Han in the Fast and Furious franchise, has made his feature directorial debut with the ’90s-set creature feature Shaky Shivers, which landed a North American distribution deal with Cinedigm. They teamed up with Fathom Events to bring the movie to theatres for one night last month, and now it has been announced (via our friends at Bloody Disgusting) that Shaky Shivers will be receiving a digital release on October 17th. The digital version can be pre-ordered on Amazon. The movie will also be streaming on the Screambox service.
Shot over the course of five weeks at a closed down girl scout camp back in 2020, Shaky Shivers takes viewers on a hilarious and nostalgic journey to an abandoned camp where two young women, played by Brooke Markham (In the Dark) and VyVy Nguyen (The Sympathizer), stumble upon a book of magical spells.

Plot: Fearing a witch’s curse is going to make her turn into a werewolf, Lucy heads to an abandoned camp with her friend Karen to wait out the full moon. But lycanthropy may be the least of their problems.
Review: The horror comedy Shaky Shivers takes its title from a cold, sweet concoction created by ice cream shop worker Karen (VyVy Nguyen), but we never actually learn what ingredients she has put into this treat. The movie itself is quite a blend of sub-genres, featuring lycanthropy, zombies, a witch, cultists, a Trapper Keeper Necronomicon, a Bigfoot enthusiast… and maybe even an appearance by Bigfoot itself.
Karen works at the aforementioned ice cream shop with her pal Lucy (Brooke Markham), and when a witchy woodsy woman called Mama Nature (played by Erin Daniels of Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses) comes in after closing time, wielding an odd puppet and asking for food,...

Reflecting on the making of his debut feature Shivers, David Cronenberg once remarked that he figured his vision for an ultra-modern horror film exploring current anxieties would be commercially unviable due to the genre being primarily associated with the gothic castle settings of the Universal and Hammer pictures of the sort. Well, now in an age where the genre is nothing if not modern explorations of the age of smartphones, Trump’s presidency, generational trauma, pandemic-inspired doomerism, etc., the gothic seems highly unique. So one partly wants to welcome André Øvredal’s maybe-out-of-touch The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on a lone chapter from Bram Stoker’s vampire urtext, yet there’s a modern anxiety at play here too: the ubiquity of intellectual property.
Of course, this is the second Dracula movie released by Universal this year (after Renfield), with the vampire reskinned from caped romantic anti-hero to Nosferatu-esque gargoyle,...

Maple Syrup Massacre is an editorial series where Joe Lipsett dissects the themes, conventions and contributions of new and classic Canadian horror films. Spoilers follow…
William Fruet is one of Canada’s most important directors. He’s renowned for not only his contributions to ‘realist social dramas’ such as 1970’s Goin’ Down The Road (one of Canada’s first English language fiction feature films) and 1972’s Wedding in White, but also for his Canuxploitation films of the 70s.

Olivia Rodrigo is back with “Vampire,” the lead single off her sophomore album, the highly-anticipated “Guts.” The song has proven to be yet another hit for her, debuting at number-one on the Spotify charts and poised to do the same on the Billboard Hot 100. With such immediate success come questions about how the song will perform at the Grammys, especially coming after Rodrigo’s three wins at the 2022 event. While it might be too early to declare “Vampire” a general field competitor, there’s one category where the song might already have a path to victory: Best Pop Solo Performance. Rodrigo previously won that category for her smash single “Drivers License.” So how does that affect her chances at a nomination and perhaps a win?

Infectious disease has been a concern of humankind ever since we first began cooperating in large settlements, so it makes sense that this horrific fact of life has also become the basis for many of our scary stories. And while Covid and the Black Plague are scary enough on their own, some stories rely on much stranger (and often absurd) diseases in order to terrify audiences – especially when horror movies are concerned.
And with so many viral scares out there, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six of the strangest infection horror flicks for your viewing pleasure. After all, it might do horror fans some good to remember that things could still have been much worse after living through a very real pandemic.

You know you are watching a David Cronenberg film within the first few minutes. His unique directorial vision and style are instantly recognizable. For over 50 years, Cronenberg has been pushing the boundaries of mainstream cinema with his unflinching explorations of the human body and psyche. His films delve into humanity’s deepest fears and darkest desires, all with his signature clinical precision and intellectual curiosity.
David Cronenberg Depostiphotos
Cronenberg emerged from the “Canuxploitation” era of Canadian B-movies in the 1970s to become one of the most influential auteurs in modern film. His early cult classics like Shivers and Scanners established his fascination with the physicality of human existence and all the ways our flesh and minds can mutate and transform. Cronenberg’s films are known for their disturbing body horror and surreal science fiction concepts, but at their core, they reveal fundamental truths about human nature and our relationship with our own physical being.

“There’s nothing the matter with the instrument, it’s the body. The woman’s body is all wrong!”
We’ve discussed how vulnerable it can be to be under the bright lights of the dentist’s chair but how about the doctor, particularly a specialty doctor that’s job is to deal with our most private of parts. David Cronenberg is the master of turning our bodies into horrible things that seek to hurt us, perfecting the use of the term “body horror”. So, what happens when Cronenberg makes a movie about twin gynecologists that begin to lose their grip on reality, and did you know that this is actually based on true events?...

Sung Kang, who is best known for playing the fan favorite role of Han in the Fast and Furious franchise, has made his feature directorial debut with the ’90s-set creature feature Shaky Shivers – and we have some good news to share about the project today: it has secured distribution from Cinedigm in North America! Shaky Shivers will be receiving a theatrical release this fall, then it will move to the Screambox streaming service.
Surrounded by classic monsters and drawing inspiration from 80’s horror films, Karen and Lucy find themselves facing a series of supernatural occurrences after a...

This article contains spoilers for various sci-fi movies
“In the end? Nothing ends, Adrian. Nothing ever ends.” If you’re a geek reading Den of Geek, you probably recognize those words as the final ones between Dr. Manhattan and Adrian Veidt in Alan Moore and David Gibbons’s Watchmen. Manhattan’s statement comes as a warning to Veidt, who tried to save humanity from itself by manufacturing an alien invasion at the cost of nearly half of the world’s population. Viedt, of course, wants to know if it’s over, if he did truly save the world. But for Manhattan, who exists at all points on his timeline at once, the answer isn’t so simple. Nothing ends because nothing begins. It all simply is, at least from his perspective.
Get it? Yeah, me neither. But that’s part of the deal with sci-fi stories like Watchmen. Branching timelines,...

Between his strong new album – (pronounced Subtract) and the week he spent in court successfully proving the originality of “Thinking Out Loud,” Ed Sheeran and his songwriting methods are under the sharpest scrutiny of his career. Other than the man himself, few have more insight into that subject than Snow Patrol guitarist Johnny McDaid, who’s been collaborating with Sheeran since 2013 as a co-writer and producer, including on the recent hits “Bad Habits” and “Shivers.” In an interview conducted for Rolling Stone‘s Sheeran cover story, McDaid, who’s also close friends with Sheeran,...

Considered the master of ‘body horror’, Canadian auteur David Cronenberg is the singular talent behind nightmarish classics including Videodrome, The Fly, Scanners, Shivers and more. Dead Ringers, which was loosely based on the lives of Stewart and Cyril Marcus, saw Jeremy Irons’ twin gynecologists descend into a codependent hell. It’s nigh-on perfect so a remake for TV, ‘but this time with women’ wasn’t necessarily a welcome concept.
Perhaps against the odds then, this version is excellent, expanding on the themes, going hard on the horror and showcasing the talent of Rachel Weisz who scorches the screen throughout.
As in the film, she plays twin gynecologists Elliot and Beverly Mantle, brilliant doctors wanting to revolutionize fertility and the childbirth processes. With backing from Jennifer Elhe’s wealthy investor the twins open a bespoke birthing center meant to destigmatize pregnancy and women’s bodies – the clients are referred to as ‘guests’ rather than patients because,...

David Cronenberg has been exploring the flesh-mind dichotomy ever since his 1969 sci-fi debut, "Shivers," where mutations in the flesh lead to new stages of consciousness. Body horror is a gateway to thematic realms that reveal deep-seated psychological urges, and Cronenberg uses this element to deeply electrifying and repulsive ends. But what makes his 1986 sci-fi horror film, "The Fly," so poignant is that it blends body horror with a tragic central love story that is so moving that it intensifies the terrifying aspects of the narrative. A freak accident leads to the forbidden fusion of DNA, and the aftereffects are life-altering: The ecstasies of newfound life and love slowly devolve into the grotesqueness of change, loss, and the inevitability of death.
Love is infused with suffering in "The Fly," in the same way Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) finds himself infused with the baser instincts of a housefly and morphs into something unrecognizable.

David Cronenberg knows what he likes. He's made a career out of sticking doggedly to his own twisted visions of humanity and churning out some of the most provocative films of the past few decades. But while they're sometimes dismissed as gratuitous body horror fests, Cronenberg's films have often interrogated complex societal issues. That was the case with his 2012 effort "Cosmopolis," which provided an unsettling insight into the cold detachment of society's elite, played out almost entirely inside a limo by Robert Pattinson. And while Pattinson, fresh off his "Twilight Saga" stardom, was understandably nervous and terrified going into "Cosmopolis," he seems to have left a lasting impression on Cronenberg.
A decade later, Pattinson would end up playing the lead role in Matt Reeves's superhero film "The Batman," stepping into what is the "Cosmopolis" director's arguably least favorite genre. In the past, Cronenberg has had some pretty harsh words for superhero films.

Out of all the popular Universal monsters, werewolves may have appeared the most often in ‘90s children’s literature. There was something about these hirsute creatures of the night that appealed to young readers back then. Through adult eyes, werewolves are a duality of man and beast, day and night, and good and evil. For kids, though, they’re simply scary monsters who might eat them. Couple that plain fear with morbid fascination, and werewolves are a perfect adversary for young people, as seen in this beastly edition of Buried in a Book.
Unlike its obvious inspiration of Goosebumps, Marty M. Engle and Johnny Ray Barnes Jr.’s series Strange Matter had a single setting. The stories changed from book to book, but every instance of weirdness occurred in a town called Fairfield. The first volume, No Substitutions (1995), demonstrates the sort of paranormal activity that only the students at Fairfield Junior High seem to notice.

Every once in a while, the stars calendar aligns and Halloween falls on a Monday, so “Dancing with the Stars” can have a proper Halloween Night celebration.

The pop field at the Grammys is usually one of the most star-studded every year. This year some of the categories seem especially crowded, so let’s take a quick look at who the main contenders are.
For Best Pop Solo Performance, a lot of big names are in contention. The biggest commercially are two Brits who are also past category winners: Harry Styles’s “As It Was,” which has topped the Hot 100 for 13 weeks as of this writing, and Adele’s “Easy On Me,” which topped the chart for 10 weeks. They will likely be joined by another category winner with a number-one hit: Lizzo, whose “About Damn Time” is easily one of the most memorable moments in pop music this season. Finally, there’s Beyoncé, who will likely be nominated for her two-week number-one hit “Break My Soul.” If there was anything like a lock at the Grammys, it would probably be these four.

David Cronenberg’s latest feature shares a title with an experimental film he made in 1970. In the wake of the original Crimes of the Future, Cronenberg would effectively invent, refine and then move on from “‘body horror” cinema, leaving a genre-defining canon of fantasy films that used the mutations of the flesh to discuss matters of life and death. Since 1988’s Dead Ringers, the Canadian auteur’s preoccupations have been more psychological (notwithstanding the mugwumps of Naked Lunch and the quirky genre return of eXistenZ); from the sexual pathology of Crash, through the stagey Freud/Jung melodrama of A Dangerous Method to the biting Hollywood satire of Maps to the Stars.
