In 1866, Gustave Courbet painted The Origin of the World, a portrait of a woman’s nude torso and exposed vagina that still possesses the capacity to shock the straitlaced. On one level, the painting proves pretty definitively that there’s a fine line between a timeless work of art and a beaver shot. On another, it provides a convenient precursor for the cinematic sensibility of Spanish maverick Jess Franco, who seemingly never met a pussy he didn’t want to zoom unabashedly in on. This holds especially true for Lorna the Exorcist, wherein the female genitalia play a significant thematic as well as aesthetic role.
For what it’s worth, the film bears only the slightest passing resemblance to the William Friedkin classic that it’s ostensibly ripping off. Both films focus on a character located on the cusp between childhood and womanhood (though here she’s a bit of...

In a Broadway season teeming with exciting plays, musicals, and revivals, a dramatization of a small city council meeting may sound dull. Perhaps in the hands of a lesser playwright than Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy Letts, but his fictional Big Cherry bureaucracy at the center of “The Minutes” is anything but tame. The “August: Osage County” scribe re-teamed with director Anna D. Shapiro for this genre-defying political satire with a horrifying underbelly. The ensemble comprises both New York and Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre mainstays, featuring the likes of Blair Brown, Jessie Mueller, Austin Pendleton, and Letts himself, with Noah Reid making his Broadway debut. “The Minutes” opened at Studio 54 on April 17 for a limited engagement.
Letts’ latest work received overwhelmingly strong notices from critics. In a rave review, Naveen Kumar (Variety) calls the play a “cunning,” “sensational,” and “astonishing feat” handled with “brilliant finesse.” He applauds Letts for penning this “thrilling...

After Rosalía released her 2018 album El Mal Querer, a baroque masterwork anchored in solemn flamenco traditions and glowing pop sounds, the Spanish artist’s world cracked wide open, and everything seemed to rush at her at once. There was endless praise: She was a creative genius. She was a hero of the avant-garde. She’d saved flamenco. Waves of criticism came with equal force: She wasn’t doing authentic flamenco. She wasn’t original. She was too commercial. Rosalía kept morphing in the spotlight, shapeshifting through singles, pulling from genres like reggaeton and hip-hop.

Try getting the words “Pa’ ti naki, chicken teriyaki” out of your head after listening to Rosalía’s new earworm. On Thursday, the Spanish singer released the silly, TikTok-ready song “Chicken Teriyaki” and its dance-filled video.
The clip follows Rosalía as she walks into a studio and convinces her fellow dancers to join her in the track’s choreography. To the reggaetón beat, Rosalía shows off her flamenco- and perreo-inspired moves.
Throughout the song, Rosalía shouts out different parts of New York. “De azúcar la mami, todo sin recibo/Leo pentagrama’, pero no lo’ escribo,...

One of the things that I attribute the fact that I’m still alive to is the fact that I never liked going camping. From The Hills Have Eyes to The Trees Have Eyes to Eyes of Fire and now In the Forest heading out to the great outdoors never seems to end well, does it?
In the Forest opens with Bob Seegar’s “Against the Wind” playing on an Rv radio. Apart from making me feel old, it made me nervous because getting the rights to a song like this probably ate most of the film’s budget. Inside the Rv are Stan, his daughter Helen and her daughter Emily. Stan seems to think this trip will do the ladies some good, they don’t seem to be so sure.

In 2017, Oscar-nominated “Sound of Metal” actor Riz Ahmed gave a rousing speech to the House of Commons warning that the U.K. could lose its Muslim youth to extremism unless they see themselves represented on screen as something other than problematic stereotypes. “We are going to start losing British teenagers to the story that the next chapter in their lives is written with Isis in Syria,” said Ahmed in the now iconic speech.
Just a year later, the BBC’s Richard Madden-fronted “Bodyguard,” from “Line of Duty” creator Jed Mercurio, became the hottest U.K. export since “Downton Abbey,” scoring a major deal with Netflix that opened the show to a global audience. But underpinning this British success story was a key Muslim female character who, portrayed initially as a victim, turned out to be a terrorist herself.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment announced Thursday it has acquired North American distribution rights to The Big Scary “S” Word, a feature documentary that “explores the rich history of the American socialist movement.”
The company plans a theatrical release on Friday, September 3—Labor Day Weekend—an auspicious date given the holiday’s historical ties to workers’ rights. The documentary marks the feature directorial debut of Yael Bridge, whose credits include producing the Emmy-nominated Saving Capitalism (2017).
“I feel so lucky to team up with Greenwich Entertainment with their incredible track record of bringing powerful films to the public,” Bridge remarked. “The timing of this release couldn’t be better, as we’re seeing a fundamental realignment in political thinking about the role of government and the need to work collectively, not just in order to thrive but literally to survive.”

Beyonce has been chasing Alison Krauss at the Grammys for a while now. Krauss is the most honored woman in the awards’ history with 27 victories. According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, she’ll do just that.

Toronto – The Canadian metal band “Living Dead Girl” has a style that is a unique combination of Marilyn Manson meets (fellow Canadian front woman) Avril Lavigne, with an amalgam of genres including goth, rock, metal, industrial, pop and punk rock. The band will present a Virtual Christmas Show on December 12th, 2020.
Formed in 2017, Living Dead Girl has previously released three independent singles and is now set to release a full-length album, “Exorcism,” produced by Mitchell Marlow. The band is fronted by 21-year-old Molly Rennick, whose amazing vocal range has her seamlessly switching from taunting high-pitched croons, to harsh menacing barks, to haunting growls with relative ease.
On the 11 banging tracks on “Exorcism,” Rennick channels her inner goth-girl-gone-bad attitude. Songs include the raging, down-tuned riffs of the title track and “Worship Me.” The infectious “Villain” has a singalong chorus, and the enticing, taunting melodies of “Beautiful” and “Alive” has Rennick commanding your full attention.

Hold on to your wigs: Sarah Paulson dropped a first look at her portrayal of Linda Tripp in Ryan Murphy’s “Impeachment: American Crime Story” on Friday and boy, did they nail that look.

Peter Strickland's Berberian Sound Studio (2012) and The Duke of Burgundy (2014) are showing in June and July, 2019 on Mubi in the United Kingdom.“…if the film or television image seems to ‘speak’ for itself, it is actually a ventriloquist’s speech.”—Michel Chion, Audio-Vision, 1990In an early scene in The Duke of Burgundy, a character describes how one can tell two seemingly-identical species of butterfly apart by the sound each makes, saying, “Since these species are so visually indistinguishable from each other, the sound they produce should differentiate the two.” In a way, the statement provides a thesis for much of the cinema of Peter Strickland relative to his aesthetic forebears. According to the majority of film writing that takes either of his two features Berberian Sound Studio or The Duke of Burgundy as a subject, Strickland’s oeuvre owes something to European genre cinema—more popularly known in French...

The man rescued at sea on Sunday after floating on a raft for eight days was once a suspect in the 2013 murder of his grandfather, according to the Hartford Courant and other outlets. Nathan Carman was the last known person to see grandfather John Chakalos alive, according to an arrest warrant application for the 22-year-old submitted by the Windsor police in July 2014 and obtained by the Courant. Over the weekend, Carman was found drifting on a life raft by a freighter about 100 nautical miles from Martha's Vineyard. Carman and his mother, Linda Carman, 54, had left Rhode Island on Sept. 18 to...

Our series on remakes continues with a movie which is ironic because it’s about a man who can’t be seen but in reality, it’s actually the movie which shouldn’t be seen. This week, Cinelinx looks at The Hollow Man (2000).
The Hollow Man is a modern reimaging of the oft-copied Invisible Man story, first brought to the screen by Universal Studios in 1933. The story is based on H. G. Wells' famous science fiction novel “The Invisible Man”, published in 1897, which told the tale of a scientist who develops an invisibility serum and uses himself as a test subject, becoming both invisible and dangerously insane.
The 1933 classic The Invisible Man, which was part of Universal Studios cluster of successful horror film franchises, was directed by James Whale, who also directed Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein. The 1933 version has an impressive 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was selected...

Severin Films make their return to the UK home video market with the Blu-ray release of two Jess Franco films in their library, She Killed in Ecstasy and Vampyros Lesbos – erotically charged Euro-horrors starring Franco fave Soledad Miranda which mark the pinnacle of Franco’s career. The former, a revenge thriller, is considered the best of the 200-odd films the Spanish auteur has made, whilst the latter is a crowd-pleasing slice of sleaze (who doesn’t love lesbian vampires) that is also an oddly-faithful adaptation of Dracula.
Vampyros Lesbos
Stars: Soledad Miranda, Ewa Strömberg, Dennis Price, Paul Muller, Heidrun Kussin, José Martínez Blanco, Michael Berling, Andrea Montchal | Written by Jaime Chávarri, Jesús Franco, Anne Settimó | Directed by Jess Franco
Utilising the same cast of performers has always been something of a trait of Jess Franco’s but when you watch two of his films back-to-back (as I did with Severin...

Question: Any Big Bang Theory scoop? —Alexandra
Ausiello: Extending its love affair with all things Stars and Warsy, the CBS smash will be sending Leonard and Sheldon on a road trip in early April to Marin, Calif., home of the sprawling and heavily fortified Skywalker Ranch. Their goal? To pay its owner, George Lucas, a house call. In related news, Ep Bill Prady just tweeted a first look at their trip.
Question: Anything cool coming up on Arrow?...

Vampyros Lesbos screens midnights this Friday and Saturday (February 6th and 7th) at The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117)
I can’t believe after all these years I’m finally getting to see a Jess Franco movie on the big screen. This weekend at The Hi-Pointe Theater, Andy at Destroy the Brain is offering up one the late Spanish director’s most noteworthy and beautiful films, Vampyros Lesbos, as part of the Late Night Grindhouse Midnight series.
I first discovered the captivating allure of Jess Franco as a child when his Count Dracula (1970) and Attack Of The Robots (1966) would constantly air on the creature feature syndicate. Even as a kid, I was captivated by Franco’s hypnotic, dreamy style and I can remember being puzzled by a narcotic quality I wasn’t used to. It was when VHS tapes were introduced in the early ‘80s that I really sought out his work.

Whether you think it's innocent Saturday night cheese, or as repugnant as an unwashed Speedo, there's no denying that ITV's Splash! has got everyone talking the past few weeks.
Tonight, Tom Daley will slip on his trunks for one last time as finalists Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards, Linda Barker and Jake Canuso compete to be crowned the top splasher, or something, in a live 90-minute extravaganza.
Digital Spy will be saying goodbye to one of our favourite TV guilty pleasures with commentary, updates, some loving ribbing and occasional declarations of 'phwoar' in this live blog. Join us for the Splash! final from 7pm.
20:33Thanks for joining us for the Splash! live blog, all. We know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it turned out alright in the end didn't it? Carry on the convo in the comments section below, as we leave you with this lovely revelation from Dom Joly.

This month, Redemption films brings us two remastered Blu-Ray HD transfers of cult sexploitation director, Jess Franco, both starring his wife, and umm, f*ck muse, Lina Romay. The first, Female Vampire (aka Erotikill, 1973), is the most lauded of their frequent pairing, if lauded is indeed an appropriate word to describe the reverie the title has for Franco fans. Indeed, it has elements that do sometimes justify an article in ‘Video Watchdog’ written by Tim Lucas, which asserts that this title is “one of the most erotic and transgressive works in the genre.” To each his own, but this is clearly overly generous hyperbole.
Most will come away feeling more like we’re all just humoring the director’s Ted Nugent sized obsession with sex. The other is the 1974 film Exorcism (aka Demoniac), that, at best, is a chore to sit through, one of the hundreds of copycats spawned by...
