This month has been full of sad reports of celebrity passings… and unfortunately, today is no different. It has been brought to our attention that Lara Parker, best known for starring in the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows and the 1975 horror classic Race with the Devil, has passed away at the age of 84. Her daughter confirmed to Variety that she died in her sleep at her home in the Topanga Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles on October 12th.
If you’re not familiar with Parker’s work on Dark Shadows, Variety has the information: “From 1967 to 1971, the Memphis native starred in Dark Shadows as the central antagonist Angelique Bouchard. Set in the fictional setting of Collinsport, Maine, the series follows the town’s founding family, the Collins family. In the show, Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) spurns the besotted Angelique after a brief dalliance with her, unaware that she is a witch.

Lara Parker, who found the role of a lifetime at just 28 years old when she was cast by Dark Shadows producer Dan Curtis as the beautiful, vengeful and altogether evil witch Angelique Bouchard Collins, died October 12 in her sleep in Los Angeles following a battle with cancer. She was 84.
Her death was announced by producer Jim Pierson of Dan Curtis Productions, on behalf of Parker’s family.
“I’m heartbroken, as all of us are who knew and loved her,” said her Dark Shadows co-star and longtime friend Kathryn Leigh Scott in a statement. “She graced our lives with her beauty, talent and friendship, and we are all richer for having had her in our lives.”
Parker, who also authored four popular Dark Shadows-related novels from 1998-2016, arrived on the supernatural soap opera in 1967, not long after Canadian actor Jonathan Frid had been cast as vampire Barnabas Collins. Frid...

Christopher Pennock, whose long career in daytime drama is best remembered for his portrayal of a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde character on ABC’s supernatural soap Dark Shadows, died Feb. 12 following a brief hospitalization in California. Pennock, who was diagnosed with melanoma last summer, was 76.
His death was announced on the Dark Shadows News Facebook page. Pennock’s wife, Lynn Dunn Pennock, told the site that her husband, a lifelong Buddhist, “has transitioned into the pure land of Dewachen with complete enlightenment leaving only a rainbow body behind.”
Dark Shadows actor David Selby, a friend of Pennock’s since their days on the 1960s-’70s show, wrote on his blog, “Chris was the most fun loving, generous and kind man with a great smile. He was the kind of person this world needs more of…His spirit and joy of life will be with me and all those who...

Bob Cobert, the Grammy- and Emmy-nominated composer of television’s “Dark Shadows” and “The Winds of War,” died of pneumonia Feb. 19, in Palm Desert, Calif. He was 95.
Cobert’s themes for the 1960s Gothic horror soap “Dark Shadows” – “great spook music,” he once called it – were his most popular compositions, and “Quentin’s Theme” (for the character played by David Selby) became a top 10 hit in 1969 as recorded by the Charles Randolph Grean Sound, earning a Grammy nomination as Best Instrumental Theme.
The “Dark Shadows” score, the first daytime soap to generate a best-selling soundtrack album, cemented Cobert’s partnership with the series’ creator-producer Dan Curtis, who continued to employ Cobert on nearly all of his television and film projects for the next four decades.
They did four features and more than two dozen television films together. Their largest-scale project was “The Winds of War,” the 18-hour 1983 miniseries based on...

John Karlen, the Dark Shadows actor who loosed a 200-year-old vampire from a chained coffin and two decades later won an Emmy Award for playing a detective’s husband on Cagney & Lacey, died yesterday of congestive heart failure in hospice in Burbank, California. He was 86.
Karlen’s death was announced via Twitter on the Dark Shadows News page. The actor had been in declining health for a decade. Last March, the ShadowGram Dark Shadows newsletter posted that Karlen had suffered a stroke.
Kathryn Leigh Scott, the actress-turned-author who played Dark Shadows‘ heroine (and frequent victim) Maggie Evans, has written books about the show and participated in the show’s many annual fan festivals, wrote on her blog, “Memories, memories… this morning I’m awash in memories of darling John Karlen, who left us yesterday. I’m told he passed peacefully, for which I’m grateful, but hardly seems in character for our Johnny.

Dark Shadows is a show, like many people of a certain age I’d imagine, that I knew nothing about until Tim Burton made the actually very good, and underrated, movie of the same name based on the series.
However I still had not watched a single episode before watching Master of Dark Shadows. And this way of viewing this documentary was a surprisingly good way to watch. Every piece of information was new to me and I learnt so much about the show. To learn that Dark Shadows went from a pretty run of the mill if slightly gothic-y soap opera to a horror-filled soap opera that no-one had ever seen before is some pretty fascinating viewing.
The talking heads include many of the people involved in making the show and the actors in it. We hear a lot from Dark Shadows creator Dan Curtis and we hear plenty...

It's a great time to be a fan of Dark Shadows. Thanks to Tim Burton's revamp, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has seen fit to give enthusiasts of the gothic / horror soap what they've wanted for years - high-definition editions of the theatrical releases House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows. House of Dark Shadows is an abridged version of the Barnabas Collins storyline of the popular television show. However, creator / director Dan Curtis was forced to explore different plot avenues with Night of Dark Shadows.
Night of Dark Shadows focuses on the arrival of artist Quentin Collins (David Selby) and his wife, Tracy (Kate Jackson), to his newly inherited home, Collinwood. He's greeted by the mysterious housekeeper, Carlotta Drake (Grayson Hall), and the caretaker, Gerard Stiles (Jim Storm). Quentin begins having visions of a past existence in which he's having an affair with his brother's wife, Angelique...

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre releases for October.
Cinderella (1950) Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
The Walt Disney classic finally makes it high definition debut. Though it was made over half a century ago, Cinderella remains a timeless work of animation. Part of its lasting appeal can be attributed to the amazing concept art of Mary Blair, whose gorgeous backgrounds and unique color palettes help to define its iconic visual style. Though she was only credited with color and styling, her influence in the look and feel of the finished product cannot be denied. Another aspect that is often overlooked is the lovely vocal contribution by actress Ilene Woods. She brings a measured confidence to the beloved heroine and her singing voice is as gorgeous as the animation.
Special Features:
• Tangled Ever After Animated Short
• Behind the Magic: A New Disney Princess Fantasyland...

Another Halloween treat will be coming on October 30th this year. And don’t worry, it’s not the Tim Burton and Johnny Depp Dark Shadows. It’s the original stuff. House Of Dark Shadows and Night Of Dark Shadows, two features based on the Dark Shadows soap opera, released in 1970 and ’71 respectively, are now coming to DVD and Blu-Ray for the first time, according to DVD Active.
They are priced at $14.96 each on DVD and $19.98 on Blu-Ray. Unfortunately, a theatrical trailer is the only special feature to be find on both films. The House Of Dark Shadows stars Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins, Grayson Hall and Kathryn Leigh Scott. The Night Of Dark Shadows stars David Selby as Quentin Collins, with Kate Jackson, Grayson Hall and Lara Parker co-starring.

In August 1981, at the age of twelve, I viewed my very first horror film, Dan Curtis' 1976 theatrical outing Burnt Offerings, based upon the 1973 novel of the same name by Robert Marasco. I was immediately impressed with the film's spooky quality and the performances by Oliver Reed, Karen Black, Bette Davis, and Burgess Meredith. One area that stood out most was the chillingly icy score by Robert Cobert. I was eager to discover other works directed by Mr. Curtis and it would be nearly 30 years before I would finally see episodes of what is arguably his most popular production, the soap opera/thriller Dark Shadows. Running for nearly five years on ABC-tv from 1966 to 1971 and consisting of 1,225 episodes in total (some of which were in black and white), Dark Shadows is an enjoyably spooky production that was shot on videotape. It stars Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins,...

Vengeful! Ruthless! Cruel! Romantic! Compassionate! Regretful!
These are among the adjectives that describe the vast spectrum of emotions that actor Jonathan Frid most capably incorporated into his rendition of vampire Baranbas Collins on the Gothic soap opera, Dark Shadows. For me, every episode of that series was a special treat when he was included in the cast! Hearing his voice and seeing him on screen made that day memorable.
Sadly, Frid just passed away at age 87, only a few weeks before the new cinematic version of Dark Shadows starring Johnny Depp will be hitting the theaters, including a cameo appearance by him as a party guest (along with 3 other co-stars from the series, Kathryn Leigh Scott, Lara Parker, and David Selby). Of course, I would have wanted him to have a more substantial role, but I am grateful that he was at least invited for a walk-on.

In 1966 Kathryn Leigh Scott, fresh out of acting school and working part time as a Playboy bunny, was was cast as Maggie Evans the waitress-turned-governess on the ABC-tv cult serial Dark Shadows. In its prime, the Dark Shadows daytime series (which ran from 1966 to 1971) attracted 20 million viewers. The spooky, literate, romance and horror-driven show had universal appeal and came to be known as the program kids ran home from school to watch. Reruns and DVD releases of all 1,225 episodes have spawned new generations of Dark Shadows fans, who attend annual Dark Shadows Festivals where cast members reunite to celebrate the show’s unending popularity. During her tenure at the show, Kathryn Leigh Scott played several roles including Josette du Pres, the ghostly lover of Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid), who was killed at Widow’s Hill in the 18th-century flashbacks. After leaving the series, she co-starred in The Great Gatsby (1974), and...

He made appearancs at fan conventions but after Dark Shadows went off the air in 1971, Jonathan Frid said goodbye to the cameras. He did star in Oliver Stone.s directorial debut Seizure in 1974 as a writer haunted by his demons (manifested by Martine Beswick and Herve Villachaize!) but reportedly Frid.s experience with Seizure was so unpleasant, he spent the rest of his career on the stage in Canada, his home. Jonathan Frid was of course the original Barnabas Collins on the ABC-tv soap Dark Shadows. He has a cameo appearance in the upcoming Johnny Depp/Tim Burton Dark Shadows feature film which opens in just over three weeks and I’m sure his legion of fans is looking forward to seeing him on the big screen. He posted at his website that he was hoping to attend the movie’s premiere and I’m sure he’ll be honored there.

Dark Shadows, the gothic daytime drama that premiered on the ABC Television network in 1966, was distinguished from other soap operas by it’s presence of vampires, werewolves, witches, and ghosts. Hey horror hounds! Courtesy of our friends at Entertainment Weekly here’s our first look at the cast of Tim Burton’s big screen version of the small screen classic, Dark Shadows. Now this is not the first time the Collins clan have made it to the movies. In 1970 MGM released House Of Dark Shadows based on the daytime drama and starring most of the TV cast. Night Of Dark Shadows followed.
Here’s a bit of background on the cult favorite. Dan Curtis (Burnt Offerings) created the “soap opera ” which debuted on ABC-tv in 1966. The main focus of the first episodes was the arrival of Victoria Winters in Collinsport, Me and her interactions with the secretive Collins family. The program languished at the bottom of the ratings until Curtis, in order to save the show from cancellation, decided to take a gamble and introduce a vampire into the Gothic series.

Hermes Press hosted a "Dark Shadows" panel with Lara Parker (Angelique), Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie Evans and Josette du Pres), Jim Pierson (consulting producer for the new Dark Shadows film), and the son of series creator Dan Curtis. The big news was that four of the original cast members will be making cameos in Tim Burton's new film! Read on for the details and much more.
Daniel Herman (publisher, Hermes Press) moderated, and Parker and Scott were just about bursting at the seams to share the news that they, along with both David Selby (Quentin Collins) and, yes, the much beloved Jonathan Frid (Barnabas Collins) spent three days at Pinewood Studios during the filming of Burton's upcoming Dark Shadows movie. They will all be making cameos, but the real highlight for the quartet was being able to thank Johnny Depp (who plays Barnabas in the new version) for all...

There are those of us reading this who still remember the sweet shocks of the made-for-tv 1970s horror movie. Usually spat out by ABC under its Movie of the Week moniker, they were less daring, less profane but occasionally brilliant exercises in compact genre mayhem.
These prime-time flicks employed network stars in melodramatic tales designed to seep under your skin—often in less than 90 minutes, commercials included. Y’know, stuff like Don’T Be Afraid Of The Dark, Crowhaven Farm, Moon Of The Wolf…and of course, the immortal Karen Black vehicle Trilogy Of Terror.
Which brings us to the man who not only gave us Trilogy Of Terror, but several more of the best ‘70s TV-movie macabres, the late and indisputably great Dan Curtis. He was the driving force behind the cult ‘60s daytime vampire soap opera Dark Shadows and its theatrical adaptations (1970’s excellent House Of Dark Shadows...
