'Paranormal Activity' Director Oren Peli Calls Steven Spielberg's Praise 'Amazing'

'Even if he watched it and hated it I would have been stoked,' Peli says.

"Paranormal Activity" wouldn't have been shown in mainstream theaters if not for movie fans demanding it. But we can also thank one particular movie lover for getting it distributed: Steven Spielberg. A widely circulated part of the film's backstory involves Spielberg viewing — and being terrified by — the low-budget horror flick.

And "Paranormal Activity" writer/director Oren Peli couldn't be happier about his idol's reaction.

"It was amazing," he told MTV News of Spielberg's interest in the film. "One of the most shocking moments of my life was to hear that not only he saw the movie, but he loved it and was frightened by it."

Peli admitted Spielberg has been a major influence on him from the beginning, not just »

'Paranormal Activity': A marketing campaign so ingenious it's scary

7 October 2009 1:51 PM, PDT | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

Every so often, the marketing campaign for a movie is itself a work of art. A famous example is The Blair Witch Project (1999), which was advertised via the Internet with a strategy that operated on two interlocking levels. Most obviously, Blair Witch was one of the first films to exploit the viral power of the Web to stir up word-of-mouth. What made the campaign brilliant, however, is the way that it took full advantage of the murky/underground/conspiracy-theory side of the Internet to imply that the movie was "real." (I'd love to know exactly how many people went into »

Hugh Jackman Boxing in ‘Real Steel’

30 September 2009 8:49 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Hugh Jackman is in discussions to join Real Steel, a futuristic boxing movie for DreamWorks.  Shawn Levy took over the director’s chair after Peter Berg left for Universal’s Battleship movie.

The plot centers on a fighter who becomes a boxing promoter when the sport switches from human contenders to robots.  According to Variety, he then discovers an old, discarded bot who battles his way to the top.  It’s just like Rocky, only with robots… and Hugh Jackman.

The character also discovers he has a 13-year-old son, and I’m not entirely certain on this, but I’m pretty sure they bond.  Another “man finds out he has a kid” story?  I think we’ve all been there, am I right guys?

The script has been re-written several times, but it was originally based on a short story by Richard Matheson, who wrote “Button, Button” (which became Richard Kelly’s latest film, »

Exclusive: Debbie Rowe In Her Own Words

Read MTV News' complete interview with Michael Jackson's ex-wife, mother of Paris and Prince.

By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rebecca White

In early 2008, MTV News received a pitch from a writer named Rebecca White, who said she was good friends with Debbie Rowe, the mother of Michael Jackson's first two children (Michael Joseph Jr., a.k.a. Prince Michael, and Paris and his wife for more than three years. White said she had been invited to Rowe's horse ranch near Palmdale, California, and that Rowe was interested in doing an on-camera interview.

Obviously, we were interested in making it happen.

So, on April 6, we sent White and a crew to Rowe's ranch. To be honest, we didn't know what we'd find when we got there. Since divorcing from Jackson in 1999, Rowe had retreated to the dusty hills, having granted custody of the »

Trailer For The Box Online

24 June 2009 11:39 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Richard Kelly Makes Straight Thriller Shock! The Box, adapted from a short story by Richard Matheson (I Am Legend, Duel) stars James Marsden and Cameron Diaz. Check out the super-tense new trailer here. Isn't that the theme from Saw?The writer-director of the awesome-as-it's-supposed-to-be Donnie Darko, and the what-the-hell-is-it-supposed-to-be Southland Tales (he also wrote the screenplay for Domino) has clearly had a career re-think following Southland's production problems and box office disappearance. If this trailer is anything to go by, the self-indulgence has been truly reigned in, leaving something leaner and more focused in its place.Which is not to say it doesn't look as if there are some nicely bizarro touches in there. We like the Father Christmas / train wreck snippet particularly, although we're less convinced by the CGI splodge on Frank Langella's face. The story was adapted once before, in 1986, as a Twilight Zone episode. This Book is Legend - A look at He Is Legend

28 April 2009 11:49 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Richard Matheson gave horror something unforgettable: worlds such as I Am Legend, The Shrinking Man, and Hell House.

His writing inspired numerous authors and challenged the entire genre to explore not just the horrors issued from demons, werewolves, or vampires but from the human condition, from the gore of heartache.

Matheson is the master of taking ordinary men and throwing them into extraordinary circumstances.

Much in this regard, Gauntlet Press attempted a similar feat, when Gauntlet owner and publisher, Barry Hoffman, and editor, Christopher Conlon, gathered some of today’s best and most revered horror writers and asked them to write short stories based in Richard Matheson’s worlds for Gauntlet Press’ latest release, He Is Legend: An Anthology Celebrating Richard Matheson.

“What I said to Chris Conlon at the time, ‘Is that the only thing that we’re going to have to do is...have a large number of A-list writers, »

First look at the poster for Richard Kelly's The Box

3 April 2009 3:11 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

To continue our trend at bringing you tiny posters for cool projects, we present you with the first look at the poster for Richard Kelly's The Box. Based on the short story "Button, Button" by legendary screenwriter and novelist Richard Matheson ("Duel," "I am Legend"), the story was also the subject of a great (yet a bit campy) New Twilight Zone Episode called the same thing.

Norma Lewis and James Marsden and Arthur Lewis are a suburban couple with a young child who receive a simple wooden box as a gift, which bears fatal and irrevocable consequences. A mysterious stranger delivers the message that the box promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million with the press of a button. But, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world…someone they don't know. With just 24 hours to have the box in their possession, »

Richard Matheson: An Appreciation By Matthew R. Bradley

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 After the hundreds of pages I have written and edited about Richard Matheson, it’s tough to sum up his significance to film and television in a few sentences, but here goes.  Start with the movies that would never have been made if he hadn’t written the novels or stories—and in many cases the scripts—first:  the Hugo Award-winning The Incredible Shrinking Man, the Emmy Award-winning Duel (Steven Spielberg’s feature-length debut), The Legend of Hell House, Trilogy of Terror (with Karen Black’s Zuni-doll smackdown), the Oscar-nominated Somewhere in Time, the Oscar-winning What Dreams May Come, Stir of Echoes, and a little half-billion-dollar hit called I Am Legend (plus its two previous incarnations, The Last Man on Earth and The Omega Man).

Now add his adaptations of works by Edgar Allan Poe (House of Usher, Pit and the Pendulum, »
