Review: Invictus

Much like Clint Eastwood’s film directing career (and, I guess, the same could be said for his acting career, as well), Invictus, the latest film directed by the Dirty Harry star, works in fits and starts, crests and troughs that characterize the film as uneven at its worst times and incredibly powerful at its best.
Deep within its contours lies a moving story of Nelson Mandela, played by Morgan Freeman, in his early years as President of South Africa. Mandela was a member of a people so mistreated during apartheid that it shocked and amazed everyone when he made the proclamation that his country was moving forward, no recourse or even ill will, for that matter, would stop him from bringing the once-established glory back to his country. Bubbling up and out from this and giving the film the rousing edge that very nearly feels misplaced is the story of the Springboks,

Bryce Dallas Howard Joins Hereafter

She's just finished playing a member of the undead - controversially stepping in as Victoria in Twilight: Eclipse - but now Bryce Dallas Howard will tackle death with Clint Eastwood. The actress has signed on to Dirty Harry's latest directing job, which will see him reunite with Invictus' Matt Damon for Hereafter, which sees three people (a regular American working man, a French journalist and a London school boy) touched by the reaper in different ways. Eastwood is already busy shooting (how else will he finish three more films before most other directors have tackled one?) and the movie will take in locations across Paris, London, Hawaii and San Francisco before it's finished.Planned for a December 2010 release, we're betting - given Clint's recent run - that it'll end up another awards contender

Clint Eastwood has quit acting insisting he'll only come out of retirement if a script comes along that he can't turn down.
The movie great has announced last year's Gran Torino was his final film as a leading man - and he wants to spend the rest of his days behind the camera.
Appearing on golfing pal George Lopez's chat show on Tuesday night, the Dirty Harry star revealed, "I'm done... You never know where a good story comes from but I'm a senior here (and) you get to a certain stage and you think, 'Why not just stand behind the camera?'
"Nobody's fooling with you, nobody's wanting to put make-up, do you collar, all that kind of stuff."

Harden Embarrassed By Eastwood Meeting

Actress Marcia Gay Harden was left red-faced after meeting her idol Clint Eastwood - because she acted like a star-struck teenager.
The Oscar-winner was delighted to land a role alongside the Dirty Harry star on his 2000 film Space Cowboys.
But she spent the whole shoot cringing following her embarrassing first meeting with Eastwood.
Harden, 50, tells the New York Daily News, "On my first day (on the set of Space Cowboys), he came into the hair and make-up trailer, and the 13-year-old girl in me took over. I flung myself across the trailer and hugged him - and I hugged him hard. I said 'Hi, I'm Marcia Gay Harden!' and he said, 'I know, I cast you.' I had let out a high-pitched laugh so hard, I bit a hole in my tongue just to shut myself up.
"I had heard that Clint only likes to do one or two takes... but that day, he did about 10 with me saying, 'It's going to be a wonderful space mission' with a lisp - because of the hole I had bitten in my tongue."

'You listen to things because the kids are listening to them,' the 'Invictus' director tells MTV News.

Clint Eastwood is quite possibly the most badass man in movie history. From "Dirty Harry" to "The Man With No Name" to last year's "Gran Torino," his steely glare, clenched teeth and no-nonsense style have made lesser men soil their pants in fear.
But that doesn't mean the guy can't rock out to Lady Gaga every once in a while.
"Oh, yeah, now you're getting really exciting," the 79-year-old living legend responded when we asked which hot acts he's into. "I know [Gaga] is very big. I know she's very important, and my kids have listened to her too."
In addition to giving birth to nearly a hundred movies, Eastwood has three children (including a 12-year-old) and two grandchildren (including a 15-year-old). And,

Brian G Hutton, 1968
I keep waiting for the day when Where Eagles Dare begins to pall. I mean, how many films can stand up to multiple viewings over such a vast span of time (about 40 years)? In fact, the opposite seems to be happening – it gets better, yields deeper layers of meaning, every time I see it.
Adapted from the novel by Em Forster… no, hang on, that's Where Angels Fear to Tread, but there's a point to be made here. Where Eagles Dare is a great title, anticipating the widespread popularity of the Sas motto "Who Dares Wins", even though it was made years before the storming of the Iranian embassy in 1980, of which the film could be seen either as a prophetic allegory or a direct inspiration. And the title is not just a sonorous bit of rhetoric plucked from Shakespeare. No, the castle scaled by Richard Burton,

British comics illustrator Mark Simpson, aka 'Jock', noted for his work with writer Andy Diggle on the comic books "2000 Ad" and "The Losers", has posted some new 'Judge Dredd' concept designs for the developing "Judge Dredd' feature from DNA Films and Fox Searchlight.
Producer is Allon "28 Weeks Later" Reich from a screenplay by Alex Garland.
First published in 1977, created by writer John Wagner, artist Carlos Ezquerra and editor Pat Mills, 'Judge Dredd' debuted in Brit sci fi anthology "2000 Ad", leading to numerous comic book spin-offs.
Inspired by Clint Eastwood's "Dirty Harry", Dredd is a law enforcement officer in a violent city of the future where uniformed Judges combine powers of police, judge, jury and executioner. Dredd and his fellow Judges are empowered to arrest, sentence and execute criminals on the spot.
With 'bionic' eyes implanted after a time-traveling mission to the 'City Of The Damned',

I used to hate Westerns. I live in the wide and rugged expanse of Colorado, grew up in the shadow of the Rockies, and see cowboy boots on a daily basis. Heck, I even did a volunteer stint at a western museum. I couldn’t stand watching films that were basically set in my own backyard, even if the days of gunslingers and posses were long gone.
Later, I finally came around. I can’t say when this shift happened — probably upon my first adult viewing of Lonesome Dove, or maybe even as recent as James Mangold’s remake of 3:10 to Yuma. But I suddenly found Westerns to be a lot of fun, and I’ve enjoyed going back and watching all John Wayne and John Ford offerings that I’ve missed due to my snobbery.
Because I’m the type of girl who overshares everything, I thought it

On February 16, 2010, Warner Bros. is planning to release a 19-disc collection of 35 films that were either acted, directed, or both, by Clint Eastwood. The package is entitled “Clint Eastwood: 35 Films, 35 Years at Warner Bros.,” and will contain features that span from 1968’s Where Eagles Dare to last year’s Gran Torino. The 35th film will be a short documentary by film critic Richard Schickel called “The Eastwood Factor,” which is a play on the original title for Invictus, which was “The Human Factor.”
“I’ve known Clint for most of the time he’s been at Warner Bros.,” said Schickel. “I was fortunate to be able to wander around the Warner lot with him and hear his reminiscences. To be able to show him in the places where he works and lives and feels most comfortable is, I think, a unique opportunity.”
The package has a beginning price of

Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya? You should, if you’re a Clint Eastwood fan, because Warner Brothers has announced the forthcoming release of a massive retrospective box set of his work at the studio. Clint Eastwood: 35 Films, 35 Years at Warner Bros. is set to hit stores Feb. 16 at $179.98, and will cover a large swathe of the squinting icon’s filmography, from 1968’s Where Eagles Dare to last year’s Gran Torino (which by my fifth-grade math skills, is 40 years, but I’m not complaining). It will also include Eastwood Factor, a documentary on the filmmaker by Time magazine critic Richard Schickel.

So you've got The Dirty Harry Collection, The Man with No Name Trilogy and maybe one of the other previously released Clint Eastwood DVD box sets, but still you need more. More Clint. Well, you must be feeling pretty lucky, punk, because Warner Brothers have just announced plans to release a rather insane collection of Clint Eastwood's films early next year. Clint Eastwood: 35 Films 35 Years at Warner Bros will be a 19-disc set that covers all of his movies released through Warner Brothers between 1968 and 2008, starting with Where Eagles Dare and ending with Gran Torino.
This is the kind of thing you usually only see years after someone has passed away, but we all know that Eastwood is still going strong. It's too bad they couldn't get this thing ready in time for Christmas though because I'm sure a lot of dads would probably love to see this under their tree.

In a pretty amazing (and lucrative) move, it has been announced by Warner Bros. that Clint Eastwood’s back catalogue is going to be available as a giant collection. Details of what is being included remain sketchy, but it starts at the war classic Where Eagles Dare and finishes at Gran Torino. That’s a lot of movies in between. Eastwood, now in his twilight years, but still going strong is one of American cinema’s most brilliant filmmakers. The collection is entitled: “Clint Eastwood: 35 Films, 35 Years at Warner Bros.” Awesome.
Extras include a feature-length documentary by Richard Schikel, a booklet, plus many more! The boxset, at least the Region 1 edition, is out February 16th and costs a fistful of dollars. As it’s very close to Valentine’s Day: Ladies, nothing says “I love you” like an entire collection of Clint Eastwood flicks.

If you're lucky enough to be graced with cash or gift cards this Christmas, and you have a big hole on your DVD shelf where Clint Eastwood ought to be, Warner Bros will be happy to help you out. On February 16 they're releasing a massive, 19-disc collection Clint Eastwood: 35 Films, 35 Years at Warner Bros that celebrates the actor / director / producer. Included will be a booklet and a feature length documentary by Richard Schickel. The retail price will be a hefty $179.98.
Warners didn't release a complete list of those 35 films, but it spans the tender years of Where Eagles Dare all the way to 2008's Gran Torino. I imagine there will be some crossover with what you already own, like the entire Dirty Harry collection and The Outlaw Josey Wales. But most of his output from the late 1970s onward was done at Warner Bros, so all those films you've

In 1977, Clint Eastwood was cast as himself; not in
a Hollywood blockbuster movie but as a life-size portrait sculpture. Renowned sculptor, Doreen Kern, immortalised Eastwood
in bronze on the request of his then wife Maggie Johnson who asked for it to be
made as a surprise gift for the Hollywood superstar. During her stay at the Eastwood’s home, Kern
vigilantly studied Eastwood’s face and expressions making notes as he went
about his daily business. Eastwood
suspected nothing as the ladies chatted amongst themselves.
Kern first met Johnson, a former swim-wear model,
in 1974 when she came to London. Because
Johnson didn’t really know anybody in London, but a mutual friend of theirs, Connie

C'mon, tell the truth ... have you ever taken your kids to an inappropriate movie?
Paul Starke: I was flipping through the channels this weekend, pretending to listen to my wife, when I stumbled upon the movie "Kramer vs. Kramer" -- the 1979 film that chronicles the bitter custody battle between Kramer (Dustin Hoffman) and ... Kramer (Meryl Streep). I happened upon the scene in the movie where Dustin Hoffman's son falls off a jungle gym and is rushed to a hospital ... Pretty dramatic, depressing material. And then, as if suddenly recalling a repressed dream, I remembered: My parents took me to see this movie when I Was 6 Years Old!
Times were different back then -- parents would go see whatever movie they wanted, whether it would interest the kids or not. I don't think my parents thought I'd enjoy it, per se -- they probably just thought I'd get bored and fall asleep.

Movie icon Clint Eastwood swapped Hollywood for central France this weekend, when he was made an honorary mascot for soccer team Olympique Lyon.
The 79-year-old Oscar winner was invited to receive an award at the first ever Lyon Film Festival - prompting bosses at the country's top soccer squad to try and turn Eastwood into a good luck charm.
The screen legend was marched onto the pitch ahead of the team's game against Sochaux on Saturday and conducted a ceremonial kick-off in heavy rain - after being presented with a Lyon jersey with his name on the back.
But the Dirty Harry star's presence failed to inspire Lyon, who stumbled to their first defeat of the season.
Eastwood picked up an award for his contribution to film at the festival, being held in the birthplace of Augusto and Louis Lumiere - who invented cinema in the 19th century.

Bruce Willis is not a bad actor. He just occasionally acts in bad movies. It’s not entirely his fault either. Shall we put it down to “bold choices” that didn’t work out? If in a charitable mood, sure. There has always been a touch of uncertainty about Willis. He does not appear to be a natural storyteller.
Let’s say acting is an egotistical, ridiculous career option for anybody. Consider it. Even before the lucrative potential is taken into account – pretending to be other people is rather odd. Actors take up a lifetime of lying and fantasying in some vainglorious search for truth (fame and wealth too, if we are being cynical). Is it completely stupid or brave? Actors as pathological liars or sociopaths is a salient thought.
The American studios created the film star and it destroys them. Maintaining a lifelong and popular career in such a fickle,
