Sorry, Notre Dame, Jon Gruden's committed to Espn

4 hours ago | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Things are not going well for Notre Dame head football coach Charlie Weis. He's in the midst of a rough season, not likely to make a bowl game, and rumors are rampant that he will be fired after a five-year-term that has not brought the university a national championship. The number one name on the lips of everyone to replace Weis is Espn analyst, and Super Bowl-winning head coach, Jon Gruden. However, this morning Espn locked up Gruden with an extension on his current contract which expands his responsibilities as an Espn talking head.

In addition to sticking with the Espn Monday Night Football color commentary role -- in which he's pretty much been Mr. Enthusiasm -- Gruden will be working the NFL Draft, the Pro Bowl, Super Bowl week, and on radio the Rose Bowl and the Bcs game. Basically, if Gruden is talking football, he's doing it on Espn air. »

Super Bowl-winning head coach John Gruden has struck a new deal with Espn. The Monday Night Football analyst will now add NFL Draft and Super Bowl Week roles to his schedule; and he will call the 2010 Rose Bowl and Bcs Title Game on Espn Radio with Mike Tirico. Gruden, who joined Espn in May as a Monday Night Football analyst, has agreed to an exclusive multi-year agreement with the company. Espn released a statement saying that in addition to his Mnf role alongside play-by-play commentator Mike Tirico and analyst Ron Jaworski, Gruden will appear on Espn.s NFL Draft and Super Bowl week coverage, among other platforms, and he will call the 2010 NFL Pro Bowl in South »

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (November, 06, 2009)

Knock, Knock. Who's There? The Closet. you're Still Around? You Better Believe It!

There's been a great deal of discussion on the site over the past couple of weeks about gay celebrities, the closet and what constitutes being "out." And even though we've discussed the issue numerous times before, it seems like it is once again time to revisit the topic. And it's a subject that is as tricky as ever and that can have real consequences for the celebrities involved.

Perez kicked the latest round of debate off when he posted an item about White Collar's Matthew Bomer. Without citing a source or saying how he knew, Perez simply claimed Matt was an out gay man. If true, we were certainly interested in writing about Matt and his show, but as we aren't a gossip site, I wasn't going to simply repeat Perez's claims — for lots of reasons. »

CBS High Fives Jenna Elfman's Sitcom

3 November 2009 12:56 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Josef Adalian

CBS is showing a little love to "Accidentally on Purpose."

The network has ordered five more episodes of the Jenna Elfman half-hour, insiders confirmed Tuesday. That's short of a full-season pickup but still a modest vote of confidence in the series.

Critics were mixed in their reviews of "Aop," but viewership has been steady. It's been retaining between 80-90 percent of its "How I Met Your Mother" lead-in. Last night, it delivered its best ratings since its premiere (though a CBS affiliate carried Monday Night Football, potentially skewing ... »

Espn NFL Countdown features Brett Favre's return, ex teammates speak out

29 October 2009 7:45 PM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

NFL Countdown airs this Sunday at 11 a.m. on Espn. Brett Favre has been gone from Green Bay for 1-1/2 seasons. He has played for two other teams. He has played against, and beaten, the Packers on Monday Night Football. But according to Espn producers, Favre comes back to Lambeau Field wearing another team's jersey as another team's quarterback, to face a welcome of a different kind. If fans are conflicted about his return, they're not the only ones. Tom Rinaldi sits down with former Packers -- Favre's old teammates, and retired Green Bay legends -- to discuss their feelings on Favre coming back as, of all things, a Viking. From the piece: "In that uniform, »

Monday Night Football Defeats All Comers

28 October 2009 3:43 PM, PDT | Studio Briefing - TV News | See recent Studio Briefing - TV News news »

Once again, Monday Night Football on Espn not only beat all of its cable competition but all of the broadcast competition as well. Monday's game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins attracted 12.77 million viewers. (The figure was actually down 13 percent from its weekly average this season, 14.72 million.) Next week's game between the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints would ordinarily be expected to be a big draw -- except that it would face the fifth game of baseball's World Series if, as is likely, the series goes five games. Ratings for post season baseball have risen this year and some analysts are predicting that a World Series featuring the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies will attract an audience greater than any other since the 1994 baseball strike.

Adam Lambert (Sort Of) Kissed A Girl ... And No One Could Stop Talking About It

The big gay news of the week is that one big gay icon did something not so gay and set the gay blogosphere abuzz. That's right, Adam Lambert posed for some racy pictures with a nekkid girl and the reaction of our readers was all over the place as demonstrated by the nearly 70 comments folks posted. Our follow-up poll the next day registered nearly 2,000 votes and generated another 50+ comments.

As for the poll results — it was a dead heat with 41% of folks loving the pics and 41% saying "Ew" and believing that someone was trying to give Adam a "hetero" make-over. I'll say one thing; you folks had a ton of passionate, mostly articulate things to say about the topic.

Personally, I see the whole issue as being a nice little zeitgeist-y moment in how we »

TV Review: ‘30 Rock’ Returns With Two Perfect Episodes

15 October 2009 11:03 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – NBC sent over the first two episodes of the fourth season of the Emmy-winning “30 Rock” and, believe it or not, the show may actually be better than when it left the air last spring. Tonight’s premiere is good but next week’s episode is even better with some of the strongest comedy writing of the year to date and amazing work by the standard cast and one of their most talented regular guest stars, Will Arnett.

Television Rating: 4.5/5.0

Tonight’s episode, the fourth season premiere, is a clever satire of not just the show itself but the entire network. (A show-closing jab at “The Jay Leno Show” is a true gem.) “30 Rock” has never set the ratings on fire, appealing more to critics than actual viewers. It doesn’t really have that big a following or audience. And the season premiere brilliantly and subversively plays off the popularity, »

Baseball Sets A New Record -- For TBS

14 October 2009 1:29 PM, PDT | Studio Briefing - TV News | See recent Studio Briefing - TV News news »

With teams in some of America's biggest cities playing in Major League Baseball's Division Series last week, TBS was able to claim the biggest ratings in its 33-year history. The cable network averaged 5.4 million viewers, up 11 percent from the comparable period a year ago. Nearly half of those viewers -- 2.5 million -- were in the Adults 18-49 demographic. As expected, the most-watched series was the one between the Minnesota Twins and the New York Yankees, which averaged 6.6 million viewers. TBS and Fox will share coverage of the National and American League Championship Series beginning on Thursday. The figures, however, paled in comparison with the 21.8 million who tuned into Espn's Monday Night Football game between the Packers and Viking, which drew 21.8 million viewers, biggest audience for any program in cable-tv history.

While conservative bloviator Rush Limbaugh is running into some stiff resistance in his bid to become one of the owners of the St. Louis Rams, the Black Eyed Peas' Fergie faced no such roadblocks in her quest to become a force in football as part-owner of the Miami Dolphins. According to SportingNews.com, NFL owners voted on Tuesday to approve her as the latest celebrity minority investor in the storied NFL franchise.

Though the Dolphins have yet to ink an official deal with the singer, as soon as she signs the papers with the team, she can become an investor. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said he's had discussions with Fergie about the deal, but because the Peas are currently touring Australia, he's not yet gotten her signature. »

Espn’S Mnf Sets Cable Ratings Record

7 October 2009 12:32 PM, PDT | Studio Briefing - TV News | See recent Studio Briefing - TV News news »

Monday Night Football's telecast of the Minnesota Vikings/Green Bay Packers game attracted 21.84 million viewers -- the biggest audience for any telecast in the history of cable television, according to Nielsen Research. The Espn telecast also beat out every program on broadcast television. The only thing close was ABC's Dancing with the Stars, which drew 17.8 million. The game had attracted mountains of publicity inasmuch as it featured Vikings quarterback Brett Favre in action against his former team, the Packers, for the first time. (The Vikings won 38-23.) The previous ratings record for an Espn telecast was set last year when the Philadelphia Eagles/Dallas Cowboys game drew 18.6 million viewers.

Valve Pumping $25 Million Into Marketing Blitz

7 October 2009 3:26 AM, PDT | HugAZombie | See recent HugAZombie news »

Valve wants Left 4 Dead 2 to be such a huge success, they are shelling out $25 million for an advertising campaign to augment the already successful pre-orders. Quoth Doug Lombardi, Valve's Vice-President of Marketing:

We'll be supporting Left 4 Dead 2's launch with a $25 million campaign. Left 4 Dead 2 has already set the record for greatest number of pre-orders in our company's history, and we're still over a month out from shipping.

This means advertising everywhere - banners, Monday Night Football ads, table cloths, print ads, neckties, and billboards. Ok, some of those won't make into the advertising campaign, but you get the drift: buy Left 4 Dead 2 already, you fucking asshole.

Valve is certainly trying to incentivize pre-order sales. Firstly, they offered an early L4D2 demo for anyone that pre-ordered (if you've already pre-ordered, does an early demo help those that aren't sure if they want to buy it?), but now Valve is doling out even more. »

Vikings-Packers 'Mnf' showdown sets cable records

It turns out that Espn dedicated a week of hype to Brett Favre and the "Monday Night Football" showdown between the Vikings and Packers because that's what the American people wanted to see. [And not just to torture the apparent minority of us who weren't so enamored.] Monday (Oct. 5) night's gridiron matchup averaged 21.8 million viewers, to go with a 15.3 rating. That represented the biggest audience in cable television history and (not surprisingly) the highest ratings in Espn's history. The previous cable viewership record was held by last September's "Mnf" game between the Eagles and Cowboys, which drew... »
