Letter From London: Raise a Glass to Cockney Vigilantism

10 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

We know you Americans like Michael Caine, by the way you keep producing dire remakes of his films. Okay, The Italian Job wasn't horrendous (although personally I'm more excited about the forthcoming Bollywood version, which Indian film chiefs have promised will feature "lots of singing and dancing," in case we didn't know what to expect), but our own Jude Law should be thrown into movie jail for participating in your pathetic reimagining of Alfie, and Stallone should be made to stand in the corner and have his Hgh Club for Men Club membership revoked for what he did to Get Carter (which Caine briefly appears in, but my point still stands). But Brits love Michael Caine. »

Peter Sellers's mini from Pink Panther classic up for auction

8 July 2009 4:21 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

There’s no better symbol of Britain’s mod culture from the swinging 1960s than the mini car. They did the job for Michael Caine and co. in The Italian Job, The Beatles both offscreen and on in 1967’s TV movie Magical Mystery Tour and that bastion of retro glory, the Austin Powers movies in the third instalment, Austin Powers in Goldmember. And now one of the most famous minis from the era, the mini driven by Peter Sellers’s bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau in the second (and for many, the best) Pink Panther comedy, 1964’s A Shot in the Dark is going under the hammer.

The car is one of many that will be available to the highest bidder at the Coys motor auction at Blenheim Palace on Saturday 18th July, with a current estimated price of £35,000 to £40,000. Definitely not cheap, but there’s movie magic in this motor. »

Michael Caine ignores the past

2 May 2009 4:00 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Sir Michael Caine never watches his old movies. The legendary actor - who plays a pensioner struggling with dementia in new movie 'Is Anybody There?' - has no desire to look at old footage or photographs of himself as he would rather concentrate on the present day with his beloved family and friends. He said: "I never look back at all. All my sentiment and emotion goes into my family. I'm an extremely family-oriented person and I have a very, very happy family life. That just doesn't include blood relations. I have friends who are close." Although he won't look back on the past, 'The Italian Job' star thinks there is life after death and hopes his wife's »

An Original Feature: 8 Remakes that should never have happened - Part 2

30 March 2009 6:31 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Welcome to the second installment of "8 Remakes That Sould Never Have Happened," an original feature on Original Sharp Says.

Today I complete the list with (in my opinion) four of the worst remakes ever to grace the silver screen, so brace yourselves, take a deep breath, and find out which remaining four remakes I've deemed so bad, that they should never have been allowed to happen:

#5 – Halloween (1978)/Halloween (2007)

The Original: Halloween takes us into the world of a mad killer, Michael Myers, who at a very young age (and without motive) stabbed his older sister to death. Locked away for many years in a mental hospital Michael escapes one night and returns to his hometown to continue his killing spree.

What went right? : In 1978 John Carpenter created what has been called “Perhaps the most influential and successful independent film ever made,” Halloween brought us the slasher genre, and introduced »

McQueen's Bullitt Takes Poll Position On Car Chase Movie List

29 March 2009 6:32 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Steve McQueen's race through the streets of San Francisco, California in Bullitt has topped another poll to find the Best Car Chase Movie.

The late icon's heroics at the wheel turned the 1968 film into an instant classic - and now Bullitt has beaten 1998's Ronin and the original Italian Job (1969) as the best action-packed motor movie of all time on AOL Autos new list.

The top 10 also includes Cannonball Run, Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, cult classics French Connection and Vanishing Point and the original Gone in 60 Seconds. »

Caine brings the pain!

6 February 2009 4:43 AM, PST | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Here's the first pic of Michael Caine as Harry Brown – a pissed off pensioner on a rampage of revenge after this best mate Leonard is offed. It's like Get Carter (own brand of justice dispensing) and The Italian Job (takes the law into his own hands), but it's Clint Eastwood/Gran Torino stuff – an oldtimer giving fans what they love. Matthew Vaughn produces, Daniel Barber directs and this old-man-at-odds-with-drugs'n'guns-modern-times film is due out next year.     .

Original "Italian Job" Ending Finally Solved!

23 January 2009 1:47 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

In 1969, the original British version of The Italian Job capped off its caper flick with one of the most memorable endings in cinema history—a cliffhanger that leaves its heroes literally hanging off a cliff. After a successful heist, Michael Caine and cohorts speed off into the sunset in a bus, only to skid off the road to cliff's edge, the gold slipping off the back of the bus. The slightest move could send them tumbling down the ravine. "Hang on a minute lads, I've got a great idea!" Caine exclaims, right before the credits roll.

Last year, the Royal Society of Chemistry held a competition for members of the public to come up with a way out. A winner was announced today, offering a solution that sounds remarkably simple in theory.
