Martin Scorsese (who may or may not be making a Frank Sinatra biopic soon) is our greatest living filmmaker. I don't think that's a controversial or even hyperbolic statement; it's just true. The man lives and breathes cinema, and he has one masterpiece after another to his name. But it all started with "Mean Streets." To be clear: "Mean Streets" was not Scorsese's first feature film. His debut film was 1967's "Who's That Knocking at My Door," which began as a student film before Scorsese reworked it into a feature. He followed that up in 1972 with "Boxcar Bertha," a crime flick produced by legendary B-movie auteur Roger Corman.
It was "Boxcar Bertha" that would lead directly to "Mean Streets." The story goes that when Scorsese's friend, mentor, and fellow director John Cassavetes saw "Boxcar Bertha," he told Scorsese: "You've just spent a year of your life making a piece of sh*t.

Former President Donald Trump is ramping up his attacks on Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the complex presidential campaign heats up.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote Kennedy is “far more Liberal than anyone running as a Democrat, including West and Stein,” referencing other third-party candidates Cornel West and Jill Stein.
Without any evidence, Trump claimed that Kennedy was pushed out of the Democratic Party “because he was taking primary votes away” from President Joe Biden.
“Rfk Jr. is a Democrat’ Plant,’ a Radical Left Liberal who’s been put in place in order to help Crooked Joe Biden, the Worst President in the History of the United States, get Re-Elected,” Trump wrote. “A Vote for Junior’ would essentially be a Wasted Protest Vote that could swing either way but would only swing against the Democrats if Republicans knew the true story about him. The future of Paramount may be decided in the coming days. In addition to a bid from Skydance, the Wall Street Journal reports Sony and Apollo Global Management have teamed up to offer $26 billion in cash for the entertainment company. The latest content cuts at Paramount’s streamer could be a sign that a deal to acquire its parent company may be drawing close.
It’s been a rough year for Paramount’s reputation as a provider of kids content. In February it was announced that the company was laying off the entire staff of its kids streaming service Noggin ahead of that streamer’s eventual shutdown, and now reports are circulating that Paramount+ has removed 10 Nickelodeon original series as part of its ongoing attempts to rationalize the content on the streaming platform.
Shows removed include 2021’s “Rugrats,” 2019’s “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” and others. In its fourth quarter 2023 10-k filing, Paramount indicated such content cuts were coming. Paramount Global may be trying to streamline Paramount+ to make itself more attractive to buyers. Get 30 Days Free $5.99+ / month paramountplus.com

Shari Redstone holds Paramount’s ultimate fate in her hands, and appears to be narrowing her focus to David Ellison’s offer for the company.

While the upcoming Mario vs. Donkey Kong remake for the Nintendo Switch is one of the console’s most notable 2024 new releases, Mario and Donkey Kong’s rivalry has been going on for decades. The two characters have been both enemies and allies across numerous genres and franchises.
The characters are integral to Nintendo’s growth on a global stage, and their respective rises to fame have often been the source of the animosity between them. Yet, this rivalry has never been as clear-cut as you may think it is. Mario and Donkey Kong’s relationship might be legendary, but there’s a lot more to know about the plumber and the gorilla.

Deadpool, Gru and his minions and other favorite characters dominated Super Bowl ads this year, but there were plenty of other streaming-related ads during the Big Game!
The Super Bowl is over, and now football fans face the long, dark offseason. However, the Super Bowl did give viewers of all types some exciting things to look forward to. There is a sizeable audience segment who tunes into the Big Game not for the action on the field, but for the ads shown during commercial breaks. The average Super Bowl commercial cost $7 million this year, and many media companies like Disney, Paramount, and others tried to put their best feet forward by dazzling audiences with ads for big-name movies and top streaming services.
Disney+, Pluto TV, and of course Paramount+ all had prominent ads during the Big Game, showcasing the top content available on each service and hinting at what’s to come in the future.

If Martin Scorsese is the greatest living filmmaker, then Thelma Schoonmaker is the greatest living film editor. It takes great craft and an understanding of film rhythm to assemble threeish-hour cuts that never run out of energy, and that's what Schoonmaker has done time after time with "Goodfellas," "The Departed," "The Wolf of Wall Street," and so forth.
Scorsese and Schoonmaker are an inseparable creative duo; they've been working together for more than 50 years. They met at New York University in the 1960s and she edited his feature debut, "Who's That Knocking at My Door." Schoonmaker has since edited every film that Scorsese directed going back to 1980's "Raging Bull." That hiatus in the 1970s wasn't due to a falling out; it was because Schoonmaker wasn't willing to play ball with member requirements for the Motion Picture Editors Guild. Specifically, the Guild demanded an aspiring member spend eight years total as an apprentice/assistant,...

Is there a single director working today with a better track record than Martin Scorsese? Ever since breaking through with his gritty, scrappy crime drama “Mean Streets,” the Italian-American’s name has been synonymous with quality, and he’s kept that train going for several years. Some films were more acclaimed than others, but from the ’70s all the way to the 2020s, Scorsese has remained a consistent top-tier filmmaker, pumping out at least one or two stone-cold classics per decade.
What’s even more impressive is how adaptable and varied the man has proven himself to be. A refrain popular among internet contrarians is that Scorsese is just a dude who makes gangster movies, but one look at the films he’s made over the years shows that only scratches the surface of his capabilities and tastes. While his mafia films like “Goodfellas” and “The Irishman” are obvious greats,...

For as much as Martin Scorsese's 1976 classic "Taxi Driver" pushes you directly into the darkest parts of the human experience, few things are as disturbing as the character of preteen sex worker Iris (Jodie Foster). Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), the titular driver, spots her early on in a haunting glimpse from the taxi window, just one horrifying part of the movie's grim and grimy texture. But in the movie's second half, we get to know her better, as Travis devotes his violent energy and obsessiveness to the mission of her rescue, knowing (and maybe even hoping) he will likely die as a result.
Because of Iris's complex and deeply sad situation, there was a great deal of sensitivity involved in bringing the character to life. Foster was just 12 years old when cast in the film, and the character of Iris was a far cry from the typical expectations of a child star.
