Norman Jewison, the Oscar-nominated director of In the Heat of the Night, Fiddler on the Roof, and Moonstruck will add another line to his resume on Jan. 30, when the Directors Guild of America gives him its lifetime achievement award. It's a fairly exclusive honor, too -- the DGA has been around for 73 years but only gives lifetime achievement awards occasionally. Jewison is the 33rd recipient; the last one was Clint Eastwood, in 2006.
Jewison, an 83-year-old Toronto native, is a somewhat unusual choice for the DGA in that he hasn't been active lately. The most recent recipients -- Eastwood, Mike Nichols, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola -- had all been working pretty regularly at the time of their awards, but Jewison has only made three theatrical features in the last 15 years: Bogus (1996), The Hurricane (1999), and The Statement (2003).
His past work is exemplary, though. In addition to the films I mentioned, »

I thought I would just drop your website a line that somehow the death of TV and Movie Actor Paul Burke on September 13th was overlooked. He joined the cast of the 1958-63 TV series Naked City as Detective Adam Flint and received two Emmy nominations for his performance in that series. He also took over the starring role in the 12 O'Clock High TV series after actor Robert Lansing was fired by the show's producer in 1965. Later TV series appearances include regular roles in Dynasty and Santa Barbara. His film credits include Valley Of The Dolls and The Thomas Crown Affair. There is a comprehensive obituary written by Margalit Fox that appeared in The New York Times on September 16th. Best Wishes, Bill GoetzRetro Responds: Thanks, Bill- this one eluded us even though we were admirers of Mr. Burke's work.

Say it isn’t so, Rob Zombie! You’re not really going to remake that creaky classic, “The Blob,” that catapulted McQueen’s star legacy. Are you?
Before “The Great Escape,” and “The Thomas Crown Affair,” McQueen dipped his talent into whatever came along, just as most of us do in real life.
Call it cheesy, campy and old-fashioned, but who cares? It’s Steve McQueen, one of Hollywood’s hunks, in the golden age of celluloid.
“The Blob” is no classic, compared to “Attack of the »

Imagine you could own any movie wardrobe Ever fellas. Opulent luxuries from period dramas, designer togs from chic contemporary films, the vintage one-offs from cool, indie fare – the possibilities are endless. You could dress as Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) from Fight Club one night and Steve McQueen from The Thomas Crown Affair the next with maybe a dash of James Bond circa Goldfinger thrown in for good measure. Chances are the security guard costume as worn by comedy star Kevin James in new flick Paul Blart: Mall Cop wouldn’t make your list of top togs, but that’s okay as the actor has enough love for it all by himself. So much that he made off with it once filming wrapped and that wasn’t all…
“I did keep my uniform,” jokes the former comedian, “for personal reasons. Let’s just say we’re having another kid soon!” Ick and indeed ick. »

Plans are underway for a new Hollywood movie about the life of late screen legend Steve McQueen.
Producers Michael Cerenzie and Christine Peters have purchased the rights to 2008 biography Steve McQueen: Portrait Of An American Rebel by Marshall Terrill and plan to transform the book into a major motion picture, according to Variety.com.
The film will focus on McQueen's glittering movie career, beginning with his uncredited role in 1956's Somebody Up There Likes Me.
McQueen went on to become the highest paid movie star in the world with films including The Magnificent Seven in 1960, 1963's The Great Escape, and The Thomas Crown Affair in 1968.
He died in 1980 aged 50 following cancer surgery. »

While it's probably past due, a biopic focusing on the life of legendary actor Steve McQueen is in the works. The epitome of old-school Hollywood cool (and a personal idol), McQueen was perhaps as well-known for his wild off-screen proclivities (motorcycles, cars, women, booze, drugs) as his celebrated roles in films like The Great Escape, Papillon, The Thomas Crown Affair, Bullitt, The Getaway, The Towering Inferno and The Magnificent Seven. The movie will be based on Marshall Terrill's »
