Marty Feldman as Igor in Young Frankenstein
Photo: 20th Century Fox
As the story goes, Gene Wilder's agent, Mike Medavoy, approached him with the idea of doing a movie combining his talents with Marty Feldman and Peter Boyle. Wilder considered this and thought they could actually make for a great collaboration. "What made you think of that combination?" Wilder asked his agent. Medavoy, in what Wilder calls a moment of "wonderful artistic basis," replied, "Because I now represent you, Marty and Peter." Sometimes this is how classics get made and yesterday was its 35th birthday!
Obviously, Medavoy's proposal became just the right project for the three of them to combine their talents. They had a treatment of a satire on the Frankenstein story, and now all they needed was a director. Wilder - who first worked with Mel Brooks on The Producers - just finished working with him again …

Inglourious Basterds I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition, which you can read right here, but if you're looking for the short version... Buy this one right now. My recommendation is Blu-ray. The Mel Brooks Collection [Blu-ray] I almost made this the first previewed release, but at $92.99 I know it isn't exactly something people are going to be rushing out to buy as it takes a little more thought before handing over that kind of money. However, considering the set comes with nine of Mel Brooks's films on beautiful Blu-ray transfers that means you are getting each at just over $10. That's a pretty good deal.
The titles included in the set are Twelve Chairs, Silent Movie, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, History of the World - Part I, To Be or Not To Be, Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. …

I first encountered Mel Brooks’ work, without realizing it, when I began watching Get Smart, the wonderful spy satire he cocreated with Buck Henry (who just happened to be my father’s college roommate – small world and all that). It wasn’t until Blazing Saddles and being in high school before I could put a name to the madman who unleashed these wonderful works. From that point on, when I saw his name I was guaranteed to be there.
In time, I learned of Brooks’ career prior to Get Smart and understood the steps taken that led to the work that I adored. My respect for his determination as a writer, performer, and romancer only grew with time and understanding. There was no single style to his humor – it could be slapstick, word play, satire – and he blended it unlike anyone previously. Nothing was sacred and he continually pushed the …

The show broke countless box office records and won every theatre award imaginable, including 12 Tonys in 2001, more than any production in history. It began as a movie, made its way to Broadway, and then found itself back on the silver screen. Now, the smash-hit musical comedy The Producers comes to the Frederick stage for the very first time!
From 2001 to 2007, the hottest tickets on the Great White Way were for Mel Brooks' first musical, which was based on his 1968 film about a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant who come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive Springtime For Hitler), hiring a director, …

After years of being hounded by fans and asked about a possible Seinfeld reunion, it appears that Larry David has finally decided to make it happen... but only within the fictional world of his show Curb Your Enthusiasm! With the seventh season of Curb currently in production and aiming for a September 20th premiere on HBO, Larry David recently revealed that the season will feature a continuing plot thread that involves Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards all playing themselves as the network organizes a Seinfeld reunion TV special. "We'll see writing, see aspects of the read-through, parts of rehearsal, see the show being filmed, and see it on TV... You won't see the entire show. You'll see parts of the show. You'll get an idea of what happened (to the Seinfeld characters) 11 years later." I have to admit, this is a pretty ingenious way of doing …

When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences stages its tribute to Mel Brooks on Friday, it will be honoring one of only 12 people to have won all four major show business awards -- Oscar, Emmy, Tony and Grammy. Brooks has repeatedly reinvented his career, going from TV sketch writer to half of the classic “2000 Year Old Man” standup routine (with Carl Reiner) to multi-hyphenated filmmaker to Broadway impresario. Along the way, he created three of the AFI’s Top 20 movie comedies, “The Producers,” “Blazing Saddles” and “Young Franke …

"I'm mortified. So I walk down to the floodlights, and I say to the audience, 'Hey, this is my first job as an actor, I’m really only 14.'"

Ok, everyone, let's start the meeting. Before you start talking about winning us Oscars, I've got the best idea for a movie ever. It's about an alien race that lands on Earth but they are actually "robots in disguise." Catchy isn't it? These large robot-alien things can have a civil war on Earth, because, well, we need a plot. And that'll pretty much be the plot for the entire movie and all of the sequels--and there will be sequels. I know it's kind of weak, but come on, we're creating a summer blockbuster here, it's not like people will actually have to like it. We'll just hype it up so much with viral marketing campaigns and MySpace that they will feel left out if they don't see it. Trust me, once they are in the theater with their over-sized popcorn and gallon of soda, we will pump so much CG …
