Avatar: Classic Disney for the Digital Age

[This Article is Spoiler-free]
I making this statement because I truly believe it: Avatar is a classic Disney-esque adventure as imagined by James Cameron. In my head, that basically translates to “A cliched but endearing tale-for-the-ages, with claws, fangs and lots of big guns.”
In the next few days, weeks (maybe even months) you’re going to be hearing all about what Avatar is and is not (check out our own official review Here). You’ll hear the debate about whether it has lived up to the hype, whether the film has truly changed the CGI face of movies (it has) and whether the film is all that it could’ve been.
As far as that latter question goes, read on if you want to hear my breakdown.
The critical response to Avatar has generally been positive, if not similar: visually, the film is a spectacle that no movie-loving person should miss. You should

The Princess and The Frog Review

John Lasseter has been keen to point out that this is the return of the fairytale musical. The Princess and the Frog is “Classic Disney” but also brand new. It’s the company going back to its roots armed with a fresh new perspective. It’s a brave move in a world where everyone seems to be obsessed with flashy 3D visuals. With Pixar riding high on a wave created for them by Toy Story and impressing everyone with this year’s Up, can Disney still find an audience with hand drawn animation?
Disney completely lost its way during the late seventies and early eighties. It was in 1989 that they scored again with The Little Mermaid. This film started a new ‘golden age’ that included the releases of Beauty & the Beast in 1991, Aladdin in 1992 and The Lion King in 1994. It seemed like nothing could go wrong but just around the

This week on Clip Joint, AJBee tries to rouse the rabble as he turns the spotlight on cinema's best gangs
In a world that's falling apart – or even just coming apart at the seams a little – we all need others to cling to for support. Strength comes in numbers, but also in togetherness. In cinema we can see that tribal feeling from 2001: A Space Odyssey's prehistoric man to the gangs of 60s Glasgow, or 80s Brighton. The protruding foreheads remain, only the accents alter.
Gangs provide a sense of belonging and identity, as well as protection from foes. They can also exclude, as so many high school-set teen flicks testify. We wrap our modern tribal behaviour in colours and call it sport, which begat other kinds of gangs, too often lionised in modern British cinema. But gang culture is common to every echelon of society, from the streets

Listen to the soundtrack to Disney's The Princess and the Frog

It’s been five years since Disney released their last 2D animated feature, Home on the Range and here at Boxwish, we’ve really missed the imaginative art form and so are getting steadily excited by its return with The Princess and the Frog (December in the Us, February 2010 in the UK). And like many of the Disney classics from yonder year, it looks set to boast a soundtrack rich with musical classics. Think Elton John and Tim Rice’s Oscar-winning triumphs for The Lion King, the infectious catchiness of the tunes from The Jungle Book or some of the more romantic numbers from Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast. Yup, the House of Mouse has history when it comes to toe-tapping musical numbers and looks to add to its illustrious past with this latest addition courtesy of Disney•Pixar stalwart, Randy Newman.

Jungle bound?
It looks as though Whitney Port escaped from The Jungle Book for a trip to the nail salon on Tuesday. And we'd just like to say, she's rocking those leggings in a way that's making us wish we could join her leafy adventure.
Bold? Yes. But sometimes that's necessary in the world of fashion. We applaud you, risk-taker.
Say hello to Mowgli and Baloo for us!

Many expectant parents love the look and sound of an exotic name for their baby-on-the-way, but can’t quite pull the trigger when it’s time to sign the birth certificate. If this sounds like you, nameberry.com co-founder Pamela Redmond-Satran says that you can have your cake and eat it too.
“Middle names used to be either placeholders — the Anns and Lynns and Lees of the 50s and 60s — or a way to honor Great-Uncle Philip (in hopes that he’d leave you all his money),” she explains. “Today, middle names are often a place to use a wilder

20 Greatest Classic Disney Villains

The saying goes that the hero of your story is only as great as your villain,
On podcast #124 I made a bold statement that the key difference between classic Disney movies and Pixar films is their villains. I love Pixar films, but in my mind classic Disney movies like The Jungle Book and The Lion King are still superior films, principally because they all have the missing ingredient Pixar lacks; iconic, classic and memorable villains.
Pixar films are anything but weak, some credit must go towards the heroic characters who inspire courage, hope and charm their ways into our hears, but the same can't be said about the Pixar characters whose job it is to create havoc and fear with their malicious deeds.
Whether you love or hate Disney, it cannot be denied that they have come up with some greatest on screen villains in movie-making history. Here is my

"The Boys: The Sherman Brothers Story"
The unsung heroes (no pun intended) of the Mouse House's most celebrated animated features, Oscar-winning composers Richard and Robert Sherman wrote the delightful ditties that were the core of hits like "The Jungle Book," "Mary Poppins" and Disney theme park rides like "It's a Small World." Co-directed by their writer/producer sons, this doc charts the Sherman brothers' ability to make beautiful music together even as their personal relationship was falling apart.
Opens in limited release.

The Academy Award®-winning brothers, Richard and Robert Sherman, arguably defined family musical entertainment with unforgettable songs like “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from “Mary Poppins”; “I Wanna Be Like You” from ”The Jungle Book”; the score to “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and the most translated song ever written, “It’s a Small World (After All)” from the popular Disneyland attraction. While their songs were cherished by both audiences and Walt Disney himself, outside the public eye, the boys’ personal relationship with each other was far less harmonious.
