DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

[TV] The Prisoner: The Complete Series

30 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Do you like Lost? If the answer is yes you might want to take a moment and write Patrick McGoohan a quick, albeit posthumous ‘Thank you.’ Because without the influence of this groundbreaking series telling of one man trapped in a seemingly idyllic yet sinister locale from which there appears to be no escape you might not have it. From the tranquil setting, the roaring, otherworldly security system, to the sprawling Machiavellian conspiracy to guard its secrets, the influence of The Prisoner on ABC’s flagship drama and shows like it is undeniable.

Modeled after McGoohan’s previous and successful spy drama Danger Man and co-created with former series script editor George Markstein, The Prisoner played like a trippy espionage thriller. Yet the self-contained format of a serialized episodic drama meant that it could diverge each week into some heady, cerebral territory, tackling themes of philosophy, metaphysics, and the nature of ideology. »

Promo, Synopsis & Photos: The Prisoner

22 October 2009 3:54 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

I haven't watched the original Prisoner series, but I'm very excited about AMC's new reboot in the form of a 6 hour miniseries, which will be premiering on November 15.

Thanks to AMC, we have a synopsis of the show, a trailer, some behind the scenes videos and promo photos.

In November, AMC will present The Prisoner miniseries, a reinterpretation of the British 1960s cult hit series that starred and was co-created by Patrick McGoohan.

The Premise : A man, known as Six, finds himself inexplicably trapped in The Village with no memory of how he arrived. As he explores his environment, he discovers that his fellow inhabitants are identified by number instead of name, have no memory of any prior existence, and are under constant surveillance.

Not knowing whom to trust, Six is driven by the need to discover the truth behind The Village, the reason for his being there, and »

'The Prisoner' trailer: Ian McKellen makes it all better

22 October 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

The original Prisoner -- created by and starring Patrick McGoohan -- was a brilliant, heady 1960s spy-fi concoction that defied expectation: It followed a secret agent known only as Number Six who's exiled to a mysterious "village" that he tries vainly to escape from, and held in check by a series of minders who thwart him in various ways. It has since its first airing become a legitimate cult classic -- a clear inspiration for trippy sci-fi allegories like Lost; and there's a reason why BSG's most notorious undercover operative is named Six -- and a target of adaptation attempts »

How did you get involved with the re-imagining of The Prisoner?

The Prisoner remake breaks free in November

29 September 2009 12:58 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

AMC has set a broadcast date for its new Prisoner mini-series and it's set for about six weeks from now. The cable channel will air the six-hour mini in two-hour blocks across three nights. The first episode airs on Sunday, November 15.

Starring Jim Caviezel as Number Six and Ian McKellen as Number Two, the remake follows the same premise as the original 1960s British series that starred Patrick McGoohan as a secret agent who is kidnapped and set "free" in a village secluded from the outside world. The new Prisoner updates the look of the original but its creators state that it honors its predecessor by tackling the same metaphysical questions but weighed against our society.

AMC Announces 'The Prisoner' Broadcast Plans

29 September 2009 10:32 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

The original version of The Prisoner is considered a trailblazer in the world of 'thinking' TV.  Conceived by Patrick McGoohan, who also starred as the enigmatic Number 6, The Prisoner was less a series than a group of thought experiments – surreal meditations on everything from the eroding importance of the individual in society, to cautionary dark-fairy tales of government control and technology worship.  All that is known about AMC's reboot of The Prisoner, Jim Caviezel as number 6 and Ian McKellen as his adversary number 2, is that it is the same, but different – presumably using the same symbolism and subtext driven story-telling to attack the existential ills of the current volume of the zeitgeist, an exorcism of our unspoken anxiety with the way. Things. Are.

AMC's broadcasting plan is aggressive, to say the least.  The Prisoner will air two episodes over three days beginning November 15th. If the story-telling is anywhere near »

Did Batman Really Beat Prisoner for Chris Nolan?

19 August 2009 9:25 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

By now you've probably read the mushrooming rumor that director Christopher Nolan has apparently abandoned plans to direct a new big screen adaptation of the cult UK TV series The Prisoner so that he can focus on 'Batman 3'.

Nolan had signed on to helm a big budget blockbuster version of the late '60s show, which made a star of late actor Patrick MCGoohan.

It all started with a report over at CineFOOLS. Producer Barry Mendel told the site:

"Chris Nolan has dropped out of it but we have a first draft by David and Janet Peoples who wrote Twelve Monkeys and David wrote Unforgiven and it's a good draft and we're working on the script right now."

CineFOOLS then went on to speculate whether or not the new AMC television series The Prisoner, starring Ian McKellen and Jim Caviezel, might be a barrier to getting The Prisoner feature film made, »

Christopher Nolan Escapes 'The Prisoner'

19 August 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- With his mind and directing skills being used on other projects, the status of Christopher Nolan helming the film adaptation of The Prisoner was unclear, until now. The director had signed up for taking on the directing duties for the project in 2006 for Universal, but Warner Bros. obviously made a couple of offers to the director that he couldn't refuse (Batman sequels and Inception). Being a fan of the television show, and tracking the history of the translation onto film, the good news is that according to the producer Barry Mendel (via ThePlaylist by way of cinefools) they are sticking to "tradition" and are still working with the same script that would have attracted Nolan to the projec tin the first place. The new concern came by way of AMC launching the mini-series - but Mendel responded, "I don't know, I mean if the series was wildly popular that »

Christopher Nolan drops 'Prisoner' remake

Christopher Nolan has shelved plans to direct a big screen remake of cult TV series The Prisoner. The Dark Knight helmer had been developing an update of the Patrick McGoohan show for Universal, but chose to make science fiction thriller Inception at Warner Bros instead. Speaking to CineFools at the Australian premiere of Funny People, producer Barry Mendel admitted that Nolan had departed the project but plans are still afoot to revive The Prisoner as a feature film. "Chris Nolan has dropped out of it but we have a first draft by David and Janet Peoples who wrote Twelve Monkeys and David wrote Unforgiven and it's a good draft and we're working on the script right now," he said. Nolan Drops The Prisoner

18 August 2009 12:11 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Batman Begins moviemaker Christopher Nolan has abandoned plans to direct a new big screen adaptation of cult British TV series The Prisoner.

Nolan had signed up to turn the 1968 show - which starred Patrick McGoohan - into a big budget blockbuster, but he has now quit the production amid rumours he is planning to start work on his third Batman movie early.

Nolan's departure has thrown The Prisoner into jeopardy - producer Barry Mendel admits they might not get the green light for the project until movie executives have gauged the success of the new TV version, which stars Ian McKellen and Jim Caviezel and is set to air later this year.

Mendel tells CineFools, "’Nolan has dropped out of it but we have a first draft (of the script) by David and Janet Peoples who wrote Twelve Monkeys. It's a good draft and we're working on the script right now.’

“If the series was wildly popular that might effect us. The screenplay (we've got) is such a re-imagination of the series, if you think of The Avengers that wasn't a commercially successful film but it was very much in the spirit of the original show, this looks and feels so different that the tenants of the show are apparent but the execution of it is so different that I think it is unrecognisable." »

Watch 9 minutes of AMC's new Prisoner

31 July 2009 12:34 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Last week at Comic-Con there was a panel devoted to AMC's upcoming mini-series/remake of The Prisoner. Ever since this project was first announced I've been pretty meh about it; someone has been trying to remake Patrick McGoohan's thought provoking and mind-bending 13-episode series since the 1980s. So I thought, someone finally did. My expectations weren't too high.

After seeing the nine-minute preview of the new Prisoner mini-series, now my interest is piqued. Sure, having Ian McKellen in your show is always good and Jim Caviezel can be good too in the right role, but that doesn't spell success. And when you walk in the footsteps of the remake, trying to reimagine or relaunch a show or movie that has a die-hard following like The Prisoner, you risk not only failing creatively but being condemned by an already established fanbase if your new version doesn't live up to the »

Invisible Chains: AMC Brings "The Prisoner" to Comic-Con

28 July 2009 8:33 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

"You only think you're free." Now that the crazed fan-demonium of Comic-Con '09 has finally died down, this might be an opportune time to praise AMC for offering up a classy and intelligent presentation for their upcoming remake of the landmark sci-fi series The Prisoner. AMC's six-hour mini-series version of The Prisoner will air over three consecutive nights in November, and judging from the nine-minute preview screened during the panel, it has the potential to be one of the most talked-about television events of the Fall season. Candidly speaking, I went into panel with a great deal of skepticism after having read an extremely mediocre pilot script several years ago. What a splendid surprise it was to discover then how the project has evolved in the capable hands of writer Bill Gallagher (BBC's Conviction), who talked at length during the panel about the challenges of adapting such a complex work. »

#Sdcc: 'The Prisoner': Do You Want ... Information?

Jim Cavalziel (The Passion of the Christ) suffers a whole new kind of persecution when he stars as Number Six in the six-episode remake of Patrick McGoohan’s classic 1960s show The Prisoner, which is set to air on AMC in November.

Today’s Sdcc panel on The Prisoner reboot featured Jim Cavalziel as well as Prisoner co-star Lennie James (Jericho), AMC VP Vlad Wolynetz, and miniseries writer Bill Gallagher. Alas, Sir Ian McKellan, who takes on the role of Six’s nemesis, Number Two, was not present.

Gallagher characterized the remake as a “response,” and not a duplication of McGoohan’s concept. (We don’t have to worry about Cavalziel being overly influenced by McGoohan’s take on the role of Number Six; according to a Wired interview, he’s never even seen the show. Maybe that’s worrying in a whole different way.)

Comic Con Musts for Art-House Snobs

- For art-house goers/film snobs like me, my interests in annual convention that takes place in San Diego are next to nil.
