Jonas asks the hotel clerk to get him a buckskin shirt and some 44-40 cartridges for his Winchester rifle. However he was not carrying his Winchester lever action when he entered the hotel. That is because he had sold his rifle along with his horse and saddle to Vogan (Harry Harvey) just prior to going to the hotel. The only thing that he had was his bed roll.
Jonas Trapp carried a 44-40 Winchester lever action rifle and a single action revolver (most likely of the same caliber). 44-40 is suitable for small game hunting in brush country. It is essentially a handgun cartridge and would never have been a buffalo hunters gun. The 44-40 would not have the knock down to take down a buffalo and was a short range brush gun. It was not designed for long range shots to take down large game like a buffalo.
Brooks Durham robbed Jonas of 17,000 dollars that Jonas had managed to save over a period of eleven years. That calculates to $1,545.45 a year. Or $4.23 a day every day for eleven years. That's not accounting for living expenses for even the most meager existence. Unbelievably high income especially for a buffalo hunter in those days.
When Jonas confronts Johnsy Boy in his buggy, someone with a white hat is seen behind the rearing horses.
