Alien artist Hr Giger was involved in a number of film projects in the 1980s and 90s. We talk to filmmaker William Malone about some amazing films that never happened.
Given just how genre-defining 1979’s Alien was, it’s perhaps surprising that Hr Giger, the Swiss artist who designed the title monster, wasn’t involved in more films. His creations appeared in the likes of Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986), Species (1995), plus a little-seen German indie comedy horror called Killer Condoms (1996), but none were as high-profile or influential as Alien.
In the wake of that genre-defining space horror, other artists and designers tinkered with Giger’s unforgettable xenomorph in its sequels. Giger wasn’t involved in the making of Aliens, Alien Resurrection or subsequent prequels or spin-offs, and his work for Alien 3 was barely used. Instead, Giger had the curious habit of coming up with concepts and artwork for...

The late 1950s and the entirety of the 1960s was the golden age for big, brawny, studio-produced action-adventure epics. Films like "The Bridge on the River Kwai," "The Guns of Navarone," and "The Train" plopped big movie stars in the midst of finely crafted yarns about unflappable heroes pooling their expertise to pull off seemingly impossible tasks. Most of these were next-phase World War II movies that eschewed the reverential tone of the films made in the immediate wake of the conflict's end; they were less about the Axis enemy, and more about the ingenuity of men in high-pressure situations. When done well, they were hailed by critics and ticket-buyers alike.
And with due respect to the many entertaining entries in this subgenre, none of them can match the armrest-shredding suspense and rousing camaraderie of John Sturges "The Great Escape."

“I must warn you, this show is live, anything can happen,” teased host Trevor Noah about Sunday’s Grammys Awards. “It’s like flying on a Boeing airplane. One minute there is a door. The next minute we are outside.”
The former host of The Daily Show returned for a fourth time as master of ceremonies for the 66th annual fete. Opening the show in his signature white jacket and tie, Noah talked about how the Grammys was the “only concert that actually starts on time” and how it even hands out a prize for best audio book.
“It’s hard to twerk to, but it’s still great,” he joked.
Noah went on to riff about AI, Taylor Swift, and all those female nominees. But first, he had to help escort Meryl Streep to her chair.

On Friday nights — and special occasions! — IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Wait for Santa to Get a Load of These Nuts
There’s no doubt in my mind that Santa is a midnight movie fan.
A famed night owl with a criminal streak, ol’ Kris Kringle seems like just the sort of cinephile who would fit in with the IndieWire After Dark crowd. Sure, he would probably be more inclined towards the Christmas projects that feed his ego than a cheap “Sausage Party” predecessor with some of the most unpleasant computer-animated cheese ever melted into imagination. But...

John Frankenheimer’s The Train opens with a heist of masterpieces of modern art from a Parisian museum. The operation, supervised by Wehrmacht colonel and aristocratic aesthete Franz Von Waldheim (Paul Scofield), is a desperate assertion of the Nazis’ supremacist ideologies during the final days of the German occupation of France. As such, it’s easy to perceive the museum curator’s (Suzanne Flon) appeals to the sense of national pride felt by the Résistance-Fer—a group of rail workers who were part of the French Resistance—as an attempt to fight fire with fire, specifically when she requests help from railway manager Labiche (Burt Lancaster). Which makes it all the more fitting that it’s not Labiche who jumpstarts the workers’ efforts to stop the train that’s moving the stolen paintings from leaving France, but tenacious train conductor Papa Boule, who’s played with curmudgeonly brio by one...

Robert De Niro is 80 years old, and what better way to celebrate his birthday than with a look back at one of his most underrated classics: Ronin. John Frankenheimer’s career seemed to reach its nadir when he directed the ill-conceived remake of The Island of Dr. Moreau. Still, someone in Hollywood must have been impressed by how he held that tortured project together, as two years later, he would release 1998’s Ronin, boasting an all-star cast including Robert DeNiro, Sean Bean and Jean Reno. This action flick about a group of disavowed spies working as mercenaries wound up being a masterclass in action filmmaking from the director who helped invent the genre with The Train, Black Sunday, Grand Prix, and so many more.
While a modest box office hit, Ronin has become something of a classic, famed for its spectacular car chases through the streets of Paris. It’s...

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

Prime Video has adapted the one-woman podcast “Empanada Loca” into a new series. “The Horror of Dolores Roach” will begin streaming on the service on July 7. Buckle up, because this one is gruesome. Roach (Justina Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights after a long prison sentence and works as a masseuse in the basement of a friend’s empanada shop. But when her security is threatened, Roach is driven to extremes to survive.

Season 2 of “Good Omens” also will premiere on Prime Video in July. Arriving July 28, the series focuses on the friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare-book dealer, and the snarky demon Crowley (David Tennant). While the Apocalypse has been averted, the pair are back living their lives in London, until the archangel Gabriel shows up. The series is based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

Tom Cruise's 27-year run as Ethan Hunt is at long last drawing to a calamitous close with the undoubtedly action-packed "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning." This final installment has been broken up into two chapters, and judging from the almost-year-old trailer, the first part is going to bring the series back to its train-hopping, Henry Czerny-squirming roots.
Not much is known about the plot of the film, but "Mission: Impossible" movies are the equivalent of a Wallace Beery wrestling picture: Tom Cruise. Wildly dangerous practical stunts. Whaddya need, a roadmap?
As far as this movie is concerned, we've seen Cruise riding a motorcycle off a cliff, but it looks like Cruise's brawl atop a Britannia Class choo-choo is going to be the heart-stopping highlight of the movie. According to writer-director Christopher McQuarrie, this sequence was a bear to film.

Trains as a mode of travel seems old-fashioned nowadays, but in storytelling, they remain a persuasive setting for tales of unease and suspense. The endless railroad does wonders for Diane Hoh’s 1992 young-adult book aptly titled The Train. By placing her characters on a cross-country tour with no handy means of escape, the author underlines that feeling of being trapped with not only strangers but also your worst fears.

Steven Spielberg is a pure visual storyteller. You can watch most of his movies on mute, and figure out the plot via the meticulous composition of each shot and how it flows into the next. Since the advent of sound, the number of directors capable of or interested in crafting a film in this manner has gradually dwindled. Movies nowadays are generally dialogue delivery systems. So we must savor our Spielbergs, and, if this style of filmmaking interests you, learn from them.
Framing and mise-en-scène are critical elements, but guiding your audience from shot to shot is every bit as important. Cutting from the master to a close up or whatever angle most clearly conveys the story is an art in itself. So while Spielberg will always cite David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" as "the film that set me on my journey," he feels equally indebted to a filmmaker from roughly the same era,...

A bunch of assassins walk onto a train… but who are they? “Bullet Train” has a pretty huge ensemble of a cast, and it can be pretty easy to lose track of them all.
That’s especially true in this movie, which sees Brad Pitt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry and more all squaring off against each other because of one person in particular. Of course, if you want to figure out how to sort out the actual plot of “Bullet Train” — particularly the ending — we’ll help you do that shortly.
For now, let’s just run through the list of which assassin is which on the train.

The Pearson family bid viewers adieu with a moving series finale installment of This Is Us, but the show’s ending wasn’t the only big moment of the night. According to early Nielsen data released following the installment, the This Is Us series finale episode, “Us,” pulled in a rating of 1.2 among adults 18-49. Broken down into numbers, that’s 6 million total viewers. (Credit: Ron Batzdorff/NBC) According to Variety, this result places the finale above Season 6’s other memorable episodes including the penultimate episode, “The Train,” which garnered a 0.95 rating among adults 18-49 and entranced 5.3 million viewers. These numbers are reflective of a time-zone adjusted Live+Same Day rating. Until the series finale, the This Is Us Season 6 premiere, “The Challenger,” was the highest-rated episode for the show’s final chapter. The installment which aired on January 4 of this year got a 1.05 rating and garnered a total of 5.5 million viewers.

After all, as Kevin told us in Season 1, “I think that’s maybe the point of the whole thing. There’s no dying. There’s no you, or me, or them… it’s just us. And this sloppy, wild, colorful, magical thing that has no beginning, no end, that’s right here? I think it’s us.”

Six years ago today, the trailer for then-new NBC drama series This Is Us was blowing up, breaking records with about 80 million views in 12 days. It was a precursor to the show’s phenomenal six-season run which ended tonight with the series finale, titled “Us.”
The closer was set in the immediate aftermath of the penultimate episode, “The Train,” as the Pearsons gathered for Rebecca’s funeral. Teasing “Us” last week, This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman described it as capturing “a day in the life, which is so much of what the show is about” and noted that the last two hours of This Is Us, which he wrote, are “very different episodes that speak to each other.”
Besides Rebecca’s death, another thread that connects the two episodes is the dream sequence with young Rebecca and Jack in the caboose car of the train Rebecca found herself on last week.

As heartbreaking as it was to lose Jack Pearson in Season 2 of This Is Us, we never really lost him – or his portrayer, Milo Ventimiglia – thanks to the magic of TV flashbacks. We also got to see Jack reunite with wife Rebecca (Mandy Moore) in the afterlife in the series’ penultimate episode, “The Train,” when the Pearson matriarch completed her final journey. Fortunately, Kate (Chrissy Metz), who was out of the country when Rebecca took a significant downward turn, made it back in time to say goodbye to her mother. “As a viewer, as an actor, I was so grateful for that experience,” Moore told TV Insider at the This Is Us FYC (For Your Consideration) Emmy event at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles on May 22. “I know not everyone gets to have that story,” the actress adds. “I can’t imagine the grief and guilt...

Mandy Moore walked the red carpet at the This Is Us series finale celebration on Sunday where she revealed there are scenes in the last episode that were shot years ago. The series finale titled “Us” will air on NBC on May 24.
“To be honest, a lot of what is in the finale for Milo [Ventimiglia] and I was filmed years ago,” Moore told Deadline on the red carpet. “So, I don’t even remember what it was. We had a couple of things we shot for this that I’m excited to see. But I read the script and I’m excited to see everyone else’s work. I think it’s really beautiful. In my own selfish way—maybe because my character passed on in the last episode—I felt like last week was the finale and this one feels more like an epilogue in a way. I think...

The end is near for NBC’s celebrated family drama This Is Us, and NBC has released first-look images for the May 24 series finale, “Us.”
In it, The Big Three and their families are seen wearing black as they gather for Rebecca’s funeral. There are photos of Randall and Kate eulogizing their mom, Kevin is seen having a nice interaction with uncle Nicky, Randall is sharing a moment with Deja, who is expecting his first grandchild, there is a final KaToby pic, and The Big Three spend some time together sitting on the steps of the family cabin.
There is clearly a Pin the Tail on the Donkey story thread that links the past and the future, with photos of the mourners playing the game on the day of Rebecca’s funeral and young Rebecca holding the book when The Big Three are toddlers.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, in the wake of Rebecca Pearson’s death on “This Is Us,” we look at the drama actress race.

The focus of Tuesday’s penultimate episode of “This Is Us” was on the long-dreaded death of Mandy Moore’s Rebecca Pearson and the tearjerking bedside goodbyes from her children Kate (Chrissy Metz), Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Kevin (Justin Hartley). But the hour managed to feature a few truly bright spots amid the undeniable heartbreak. One of those, aside from seeing Rebecca reunited with Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) in the afterlife in the final moments, was the return of Randall’s biological father William Hill (Ron Cephas Jones), or rather an imagined version of him.

The end is very near. During Tuesday’s penultimate episode of NBC’s “This Is Us,” the Pearson family gathered to see Rebecca (Mandy Moore) one last time on her deathbed. During the hour, as the family each said their goodbyes, Rebecca, in her dreams, saw Randall’s biological father, William (Ron Cephas Jones). He walked her through the train — hence the episode title — which included those in her life she loved the most as she could hear their goodbye messages. Even Dr. K (Gerald McRaney) was on board, making her a vesper martini. Coming off their triumphant political thriller "Seven Days and May", Burt Lancaster and director John Frankenheimer went directly to France to begin filming another classic, the WWII adventure "The Train" (1964). Lancaster plays an everyday guy who is now a member of the French Resistance. The war is winding down and the Allies are closing in. Paul Scofield is the ruthless, elite German general with a fanatical obsession with "rescuing" the great works of art that had been removed from museums. He seeks to steal them for himself and has them loaded aboard a freight train in the hope to make it back to safer territory. Lancaster has been enlisted to stop him, as Scofield is stealing some of the nation's greatest art treasures. In the climax, shown here, the two men confront each other in a scene that is superbly played by Scofield, who made his feature film debut in "The Train".

Claude Chabrol’s ‘minor’ wartime drama is one of the best movies of its kind I’ve seen. A French town under German rule lies on a river straddling occupied and Vichy territories, and becomes a hotbed of intrigues. Yes, there’s resistance activity, but we also see that most people avoid involvement — and some find ways to profit from the desperation of refugees fleeing the Nazis. It’s a case of small town, everyday terror. The stellar cast is subordinated to the powerful, non-exploitative drama: Jean Seberg, Maurice Ronet, Daniel Gélin, Jacques Perrin & Stéphane Audran. Samm Deighan’s informative commentary is a big +Plus.

The railroad and military hardware on view is 100% real, something that CGI-jaded moviegoers appreciate more than ever. John Frankenheimer’s 1965 World War II film is a admirable attempt to fuse the action genre with art-house drama ala The Wages of Fear. Burt is a resistance leader trying to retrieve a shipment of precious art from a da Vinci-loving Nazi played by Paul Scofield while New Wave icon Jeanne Moreau is on hand to abet Lancaster’s quest.
