Science+Fiction Festival Report: Christopher Lee on Modern Horror Movies

22 December 2009 12:07 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

In late November the 2009 Science+Fiction Festival was held in Trieste, Italy. This happening is an international science fiction event dedicated to exploring the worlds of fantasy, experimental languages, and new technologies in film production, television, and visual and performing arts.

Most of the movies and lectures were concentrated on science fiction and fantasy, but there was quite a good share of horror related happenings. While the majority of attendees were psyched that cyberpunk guru Bruce Sterling was presiding over the international jury, I was mainly interested in visits by two legendary horror icons -- Roger Corman, who was just awarded with an "early" honorary Oscar, and Sir Christopher Lee, who had recently been knighted during the Queen's Birthday Honours.

These two genre heavyweights were certainly the icing on the top of a well produced and run film festival for me, but unfortunately, due to business obligations I missed Corman, »

Review: Three Collections of Classic Adaptations

7 December 2009 9:30 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Comics don’t have to be bad for you, you know. They can be edifying and uplifting, partaking of the greatest glories of the finest books even written. At least, that’s what the purveyors of various adaptations of  “the great books” – curiously, nearly all of which were conveniently out of copyright and thus didn’t require any licensing fees – have claimed for the past fifty-some years. I have before me three very different books that all adapt mostly old and out of copyright works for a modern audience, so let’s take a look at what’s going on these days…

Classics Illustrated: The Raven & Other Poems

By Edgar Allan Poe; Illustrated by Gahan Wilson

Nbm/Papercutz, May 2009, $9.95

Classics Illustrated is the longest-running brand-name in the adapting-old-books space, dating back to 1941 (when the line was launched as Classic Comics), and was the educational comic of choice for an entire »

James McTeigue Interview, Ninja Assassin

26 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

We sat down recently with director James McTeigue to talk about his new film, “Ninja Assassin,” based on a screenplay by Matthew Sand and J. Michael Straczynski, and starring Korean pop star Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Rick Yune and legendary martial arts performer Sho Kosugi.

As a boy in Sydney, McTeigue was exposed to a variety of world cinema and television and was heavily influenced by ninja television shows like "Shintaro" and "Phantom Agents," and by films such as "Shinobi No Mono." He graduated from Sydney University, where he studied art and film.

McTeigue made his directorial debut helming the iconoclastic screen adaptation of the graphic novel "V for Vendetta." He came to the project through his relationship with the Wachowski brothers, for whom he served as the assistant director on all three "Matrix" films. His other previous film credits as an assistant director include "Speed Racer" and "Dark City. »

Exclusive: Director James McTeigue on the Wachowskis, Superman, Edgar Allen Poe, Ninja Assassin, Magneto, and a Lot More!

24 November 2009 9:56 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

A few days ago I attended the Los Angeles press junket for director James McTeigue’s Ninja Assassin.  While I already posted my four minute video interview with McTeigue and Rain (the lead in Ninja Assassin), I was able to get some extra time with McTeigue the following day.  Since I’m a huge fan of V for Vendetta and his work with the Wachowskis on Speed Racer, I decided to use my extended interview to ask about his other projects and home video questions.

So after the jump I try and get James McTeigue to tell me what the Wachowskis are working on, his next project on Edgar Allen Poe (The Raven), the Superman and Magneto rumors, what’s on the Ninja Assassin DVD/Blu-ray, could Hugo Weaving be in his Edgar Allen Poe movie, his thoughts on Star Wars (he was second unit director on Episode Two), extended edition DVDs, »

Exclusive: James McTeigue Talks Ninja Assassin and The Raven

24 November 2009 4:11 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Director James McTeigue has built the reputation of working on some of the more visually engaging projects over the last ten years - The Matrix, V for Vendetta and Speed Racer. So, the question is, will his latest project, Ninja Assassin, deliver on the visuals? The director seems to think so.

“I wanted to make sure the ninjas in this movie felt a little superhuman but still realistic,” explained McTeigue. “When making stylized action films, you can’t always use 100% of real-life logic. I mean, where’s the fun in that? But what I liked about what we did with Ninja Assassin was that we put together some really amazing, jaw-dropping action sequences but still made it feel like any of what you see on the screen could actually happen. I think balancing the two approaches worked really well for us.”

McTeigue himself was a huge fan of the 80s wave of martial arts films, »

James McTeigue's 'The Raven' to Mix Real Edgar Allan Poe and Fiction

24 November 2009 12:22 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

James McTeigue is currently developing "The Raven", a fictional story about what would happen if a serial killer challenged poet Edgar Allan Poe to solve a series of killings inspired by his own stories. On Saturday, November 21, the director sat down with Sci Fi Wire to talk about how the famous author and his works inspire McTeigue's thriller film.

"'The Raven', 'Tell-Tale Heart', 'Premature Burial', 'Murders in the Rue Morgue'," McTeigue mentioned several Poe's poems that will give ideas for the film's murders. "There's a whole lot of them. It's actually a pretty cool concept."

Though the film is a complete fiction, McTeigue has planned to present the film's major character complete with the real details. "It's a total fiction, but obviously Poe is, like, a well-known and much-beloved character," he explained. "People know a lot about him, the way he was a bit of a rascal, »

Quote the Raven While Tied to a Chair - Poe and Torture Porn?

23 November 2009 3:54 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Edgar Allan Poe and torture porn. Two things I never gave much thought about going together. However, I guess if you really think about it, it does make some kind of sense.

Director James McTeigue sat down with SciFiWire for an interview about his latest film, the very violent Ninja Assassin, and he offered this on his upcoming remake of Poe's The Raven:

"It's sort of Se7en meets a series of Poe stories," he tells Sci Fi Wire. "It's set in 1850s Baltimore, and it's about creating Poe's version of 1850s Baltimore, him moving through it. So it has a lot of the Poe stories interwoven into it." Referenced films will include "'The Raven,' 'Tell-Tale Heart,' 'Premature Burial,' 'Murders in the Rue Morgue,'" added McTeigue. "There's a whole lot of them. It's actually a pretty cool concept."

Poe Goes "Torture Porn" In The Raven ?

23 November 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

SciFi Wire recently spoke to V For Vendetta director James McTeigue while out promoting Ninja Assassin and the filmmaker brought up his next movie The Raven , which we first reported about back here and had McTiegue talk to us about here . Considering the grisly way that people met their ends in Poe's stories, the article goes on to imply that he's the original "torture porn" author. (Let's not be ridiculous though.) The Raven posits a story about what would happen if Poe were faced with the very murders he wrote about. In the movie, at the end of Poe's life, a serial killer challenges him to solve a series of killings inspired by his own fiction. James McTeigue Says Superman Franchise Is "Ripe for a Retooling"

17 November 2009 2:38 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Director James McTeigue's new movie, Ninja Assassin, opens this month, but during a recent interview with MTV, Superman was one of the topics of the conversation.

McTeigue first teased his interest in the Superman franchise back in August, when he said that he would "do a complete reboot" if he were to take the helm. McTeigue reiterated this sentiment in recent comments to MTV, but said that the studio doesn't know what they want to do with the franchise.

It's in a weird place at the moment. They're trying to work out what they're doing. Warner Brothers is trying to figure out their next move on it. There's some things you can do with the Superman franchise, there's other things you can't do. So it hasn't gone anywhere.

I think it's ripe for a retooling. I would love to — if it happened, I would at least start a conversation about it. »

Warner Bros Remains Indecisive About Superman

16 November 2009 9:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

We know that James McTeigue would like to helm a new Superman movie, and he's been quite clear about his ideas for starting with a blank sheet. Unfortunately, Warner Bros has been quite clear that it has little if any intention of moving forward on a new Superman film anytime soon.

In a new interview with MTV, McTeigue confirmed that the studio seems completely flummoxed about what to do next. "It's in a weird place at the moment," he said. "They're trying to work out what they're doing. Warner Brothers is trying to figure out their next move on it. There's some things you can do with the 'Superman' franchise, there's other things you can't do. So it hasn't gone anywhere."

Meanwhile, McTeigue isn't waiting around for Warner Bros. to figure it all out. "I think it's ripe for a retooling," he said. "I would love to—if it happened, »

James McTeigue Says 'Superman' Movie Is In 'A Weird Place'

16 November 2009 1:51 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

In August, James McTeigue told MTV News he would neither confirm nor deny rumors that he might direct the next "Superman" movie. What he was keen to do was delve into his vision for the next big-screen take on the Man of Steel: he wanted to start the franchise from scratch, avoid an origin story and make the whole thing super dark.

McTeigue had so much to say, it was hard to avoid the idea that he'd had some sort of contact with DC Comics or Warner Brothers about the project. Then last month, DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson told us the company doesn't "have any current plans for Superman." And when we spoke to McTeigue last Friday, it seemed he, too, no longer had concrete plans for the franchise.

"It's in a weird place at the moment," he told MTV News. "They're trying to work out what they're doing. »

The curiosity on The Raven project being helmed by James McTeigue can now come to a rest, at least for those wondering about the plot. McTeigue spoke to the folks over at ComingSoon/Shock Til You Drop about quoting "The Raven" nevermore, as the plot won't be a literal interpretation of the short story. The Raven Getting Even More SE7EN-ish

16 November 2009 5:04 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

It was announced back in early August that Ninja Assassin director James McTeigue was setting his sites next on a film based on Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven.  Not a literal adaptation of Poe’s story, the film would take elements from all of Poe’s work and patch-work a film resembling SE7EN.

Today, courtesy of Coming Soon/Shock Till You Drop, comes even more plot details.  They had a chance to sit down with McTeigue who is well into development on this project.

There’s basically a serial killer loose in 1850’s Baltimore and he’s using Poe’s stories as his methodology, so then he leaves clues at each murder and says it’s up to Poe to find him before he kills (again).

There’s a European sensibility that could be cool. You could totally get into world creation where I can say, ‘This is my version of 1850’s Baltimore, »

Roger Corman: Scorsese, Stallone, Sayles, and other A-listers talk about the B-movie king

He gave life to teenage cavemen and candy-stripe nurses. Crab monsters and humanoids from the deep. T-bird gangs and towns that dreaded sundown. His name is Roger Corman. And on Nov. 14, he will receive an honor that no one would have predicted: an honorary Academy Award. The 83-year-old B-movie titan has made nearly 400 films as a director and producer. From the start, Corman was a magnet for hungry young actors, writers, and directors who would work for slave wages for the chance to make their first film. They called it the "University of Corman," and the alumni include Francis Ford Coppola, »

Early this morning, ComingSoon.net/ShockTillYouDrop.com had a chance to talk to director James McTeigue ( V For Vendetta ) about his gory action-thriller Ninja Assassin . Being that the movie was shot well over a year ago, McTeigue is already well into development on his next project, called The Raven , which isn't in fact a literal adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's classic short story which spawned a classic bit of '60s horror which teamed Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff under the auspices of Roger Corman. McTeigue told us a little more about the general plot of the movie which looks to start production sometime next year. "There's basically a serial killer loose in 1850's Baltimore and he's using Poe's stories as his methodology, so then he leaves clues at each »

The Raven – Henry B. Walthall – d: Charles Brabin

Walthall, Warda Howard   Starring Henry B. Walthall, The Raven is an Essanay feature depicting the life of Edgar Allan Poe, starting with his childhood and going all the way to his marriage to his cousin (played by the little-known Warda Howard). Charles Brabin’s direction is uneven: At some points it’s stagy and rudimentary; at other points, Brabin creates some remarkably striking and eerie visual effects, including a bravura scene for Walthall in which he descends further and further into madness following the death of his wife. 50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 1

27 October 2009 5:54 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Given man's unwavering fascination with woman, it's no surprise that the female star acts as the anchor to a dominant portion of horror pictures. I mean really, who wants to see a bare chested man tearin ass through the woods screaming at the top of his lungs while a bladed assailant nips at his heels? I don't - I know that much, although I'm certain there are plenty of men who would disagree (and that's okay with me, to each his own!). The simple fact remains however, women bring a unique appeal and certain sensual atmosphere to film that no man ever could. And it's not all about gratuitous T&A.

There's a comforting quality in the hands of the heroine; a fascinating maternal strength that, as a man I cannot genuinely relate to. I can however admire, and in many cases it's nearly impossible to not admire the lone »

Not only did Fantastic Fest audiences get a glimpse at the upcoming Ninja Assassin two months before its wide release, Fsr was lucky enough to sit down with director James McTeigue who had a ton to say about the MPAA ratings process, the concept behind creating a live-action anime and his forthcoming murder mystery The Raven (which he describes as Poe meets Se7en). Oh, and we also talk about kicking ass. Naturally. A veteran of the film industry, McTeigue had a lot to say about the difficulties faced by studios, claiming that they didn't know what the next hot subculture would be (and that they need one for when comic book characters go on the decline). So for those of you who demand an interview that deals with the inner politics of the film industry and a discussion on Kusarigamas cutting through human flesh, gird your loins and prepare yourself: »
