A pair of items once owned by the late Paul Newman — specifically, two wristwatches — have already proven themselves to be highly collectible at auction, with a rare Rolex Daytona gaveling for $17.8 million in 2017 and another Daytona selling for $5.4 million three years later.
Now, Sotheby’s auction house is readying a sale of more than 300 items from the collection of Newman, who died in 2008 at age 83, and his wife of 50 years, 93-year-old, Oscar-winning actress Joanne Woodward. (The actress was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2007.)
Set to take place across a series of Sotheby’s sales this June in New York, the collection, titled “The World of Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman,” encompasses objects that provide a window into both the professional and personal lives of the couple, recently chronicled in the six-part HBO Max docuseries The Last Movie Stars, directed by Ethan Hawke.

On Oct. 30, 1963, Paramount held the premiere of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward's A New Kind of Love in New York. The film went on to be nominated for two Oscars — costume design and music — at the 36th Academy Awards. The Hollywood Reporter's original review is below:
A New Kind of Love is actually the good old reliable kind of love, but served up in a chic, uninhibited farce that makes the eternal theme as sprightly as spring. Paramount has a box-office winner in Melville Shavelson's production, perhaps the studio's top attraction of the ...

A movie starring two famous actors who happen to be married in real-life: On paper, it sounds like it should be a sure-fire win. In reality? It’s not that simple.
It’s no wonder that famous couples might be hesitant to collaborate in a movie, even if it was guaranteed to smash the box office: Working with your spouse is hard, and it wouldn’t make it any easier to know that throngs of people would be examining the final product, looking for all possible glimpses into your personal life.

Even the biggest night in movies isn’t without the occasional flub.
While many were perplexed as to how Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were handed the wrong envelope at the 2017 Oscars, leading the presenters to mistakenly announce La La Land as the winner of Best Picture, it’s happened before.
At the 1964 Academy Awards, Sammy Davis Jr. presented the award for Best Music Score (adaptation or treatment) during the 36th Academy Awards, but he too was given the incorrect envelope.

Remember when Spike Lee launched that $1.25 million Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign way back in July 2013 for an as-of-that-time unnamed new and hot joint with the tagline, “Human beings who are addicted to Blood. Funny, Sexy and Bloody. A new kind of love story (and not a remake of Blacula).”?
Remember all the heated debates it sparked about whether or not it was kosher for multi-millionaires from traditional Hollywood to try to leverage their audiences and newfound funding mechanisms to make potentially risque projects outside the familiar, but sometimes unfriendly confines of the traditional entertainment landscape?
And remember how Lee ended up raising more than $1.4 million for the campaign, with at least $290,000 of that sum coming from 29 individuals who put up $10K a piece to go out to dinner with the Academy Award-nominated director and sit courtside with him at a Knicks game?
Well, the crowdfunded flick has now been released. And...

A trailer has dropped for Spike Lee’s latest, Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus – aka “the newest, hottest Spike Lee joint,” a no-star, semi-experimental affair made possible with the help of $1.4 million in Kickstarted donations. Gravitas Ventures picked up the re-envisioning of Bill Gunn’s 1973 cult horror film Ganja & Hess, about a doctor who develops a thirst for blood after an art curator introduces him to an ancient African artifact. The thirst consumes his soul as he embarks on a dangerous romance with the curator’s widow that Lee describes as “funny, sexy and bloody. A new kind of love story (and not a remake of Blacula).”
Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus closed its successful Kickstarter campaign in August and debuted at the American Black Film Festival. Gravitas will open it February 13 in theaters and on VOD. Stephen Tyrone Williams, Zaraah Abrahams, Elvis Nolasco, and Rami Malek star in the...

Filmmaker Spike Lee continues to keep audiences on their toes. He’s seemingly always got one documentary in the works (the next is “Go Brazil Go”), he hasn’t strayed far from his indie roots (“Red Hook Summer”) and he won’t shy away from a big budget remake either (“Oldboy”). The 25th anniversary of “Do The Right Thing” is right around the corner (it's screening at Bam as part of BAMCinemafest soon). And then of course there’s his upcoming crowdsourced Kickstarter film, “Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus.” Not a lot is known about this one and there’s certainly an element of mystery to it. The only synopsis Lee will unveil is that it's about "Human beings who are addicted to Blood. Funny, Sexy and Bloody. A new kind of love story (and not a remake of 'Blacula')." Though Lee also once said, “The reason I have not...

"And Da Pundits Said It Couldn't Be Done," Spike Lee posted on Instagram along with a photo of a clapboard marking the end of production on his Kickstarter-funded film, "Da Blood of Jesus." Lee tweeted last night that "Your Kickstarter Joint Just Wrapped At 936 Pm Tonight In 16 Days. Thank You." What began as a seemingly misguided effort in crowdfunding turned into an example of how to get the job done. As Indiewire's Bryce Renniger wrote: When Lee launched the campaign for "The Newest Hottest Spike Lee Joint," a film about "Human beings who are addicted to Blood. Funny, Sexy and Bloody. A new kind of love story (and not a remake of "Blacula")," he received a lot of criticism for not knowing much about the community standards of the platform he was asking for money on. With Spike Lee's blood addiction comedy now successfully funded on Kickstarter (its campaigning ended August 21, with a little over $1.4 million raised), the director has clearly found a preferred method for getting the word out about his films. Not only is he sending updates on casting for this new project (more info below), he's also using the crowdfunding platform to plug his upcoming joint, "Oldboy," which hits theaters in October. Michael K. Williams ("12 Years a Slave," "Boardwalk Empire," Omar from "The Wire") has been cast in the film, along with Stephen Tyrone Williams ("Restless City," "Children of "God") and the previously announced Zaraah Abrahams ("Waterloo Road").Despite this new casting, very little about the actual film is yet known, Update: except for its title, "Da Blood of Jesus." The Kickstarter page's tagline reads: "Humans who are addicted to blood. Funny, sexy and bloody. A new kind of love story (and...

Spike Lee has had a hard time getting love from industry pundits and journalists for his ill-conceived Kickstarter campaign. Nearly everyone I know who has seen the official poster for the 66th Cannes Film Festival -- a bird's-eye view of a kiss between a young Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward -- has been crazy about it. The couple's lips meet in the center of a perfect sunburst. She's two o'clock, he's eight o'clock -- between them, they've got the whole day and night covered. Adapted from a photograph taken in 1963 during the filming of Melville Shavelson's A New Kind of Love, it's as romantic a movie image as you could hope for, a link to cinema's past that also feels strikingly modern. A gargantuan version of this poster has been hoisted high above the entrance to the Grand Théâtre Lumière here in Cannes, the theater where all the gala premieres are held. And while...

Cannes' done it again. After impressing over the past few years with posters that payed tribute to actresses (Juliette Binoche, Faye Dunaway and Marilyn Monroe), the Cannes Film Festival has chosen to showcase a famous Hollywood on/off screen couple, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, for their 2013 promo artwork. The result is pretty magical. In a release, the festival said they selected the duo to pay tribute to the memory of Newman (he passed away in 2008) and his "undying admiration for Woodward," his wife. The first film in which they appeared together, "The Long Hot Summer," played in competition at Cannes in 1958. Two of Newman's films, "The Effect of the Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds" and "The Glass Menagerie," both starring Woodard, also screened at the festival. The image on the poster, remastered and redesigned by the Bronx agencry, was taken during the filming of Melville Shavelson's 1963 film " A New Kind of Love.

"A Head-Turning Poster." I love it. Ever since I've been attending the Cannes Film Festival in the South of France (this will be my 5th year) their poster art and fest identity has improved year after year. While I wasn't the biggest fan of the Marilyn Monroe art last year, this one brings it right back with an eye-catching, "head-turning" poster that fits the festival perfect and simultaneously gets me excited for the screenings to come. In the past few years, posters for the Cannes Film Festival have been paying tribute to actresses, with Juliette Binoche, Faye Dunaway and Marilyn Monroe all taking center stage. But in 2013, it's a classic cinema couple who get the spotlight for the 66th installment of the festival. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward kiss on the new poster for the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. The pair bucked Hollywood's tradition of fast romance; they first met in 1953, were married in 1958 and stayed that way until Newman's death in 2008. They made ten movies together, while Newman directed his wife in five pictures as well, and the image on the poster -- taken during the filming of Melville Shavelson's 1963 film "A New Kind Of Love" -- perfectly captures their enduring appeal to each other and to audiences. The Cannes connection for the pair comes with their first film together, Martin Ritt's 1958 effort "The Long Hot Summer,...

Cannes Film Festival is one of our favourite events of the year and I’m pleased to let you all know that we’ll be there again this year to bring you as many reviews from the French Riviera as we possibly can. Joanne Woodward never became a major box-office draw. No matter. Woodward was one of the best film actresses of the 20th century, as can be attested by her work in The Three Faces of Eve; Rachel, Rachel (right); Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams; The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds; and Mr. and Mrs. Bridge. Woodward's absence from the big screen after a supporting role in Jonathan Demme's 1993 AIDS drama Philadelphia is indeed cinema's loss. On Tuesday, August 16, Turner Classic Movies will be presenting 13 Joanne Woodward movies as part of TCM's "Summer Under the Stars" film series. [Joanne Woodward Movie Schedule.] Four of those are TCM premieres: Leo McCarey's weak comedy Rally Round the Flag, Boys! (1958), with Paul Newman as Woodward's love interest, and Joan Collins sultrily stealing the show; Burt Reynolds' highly successful black comedy The End (1978), about a dying man's attempts at killing himself with the assistance of a...
