Academy Award Submission for Nomination Best Foreign Language Film: Cuba: ‘The Companion’ Interview…
Academy Award Submission for Nomination Best Foreign Language Film: Cuba: ‘The Companion’ Interview with Pavel Giroud1988, Cuba, those infected with HIV or suffering from AIDS were given free room, board and medical treatment at a beautiful facility called “Los Cocos”. Except for the criminals who shared prison cells, the patients shared apartments with other patients. These apartments were so comfortable that some healthy people wanted to have AIDS so they could live in such conditions. But the patients were also treated as prisoners, living under military guard. One day a week they were allowed a day of freedom when they could leave the facility, but they had to have a companion assigned to be with them at all times.
“The Companion”/ “El acompañante” is a very Cuban film because the government’s treatment and control over the spread of AIDS was very particular to Cuba. The story is based on...

Behind the Candelabra HBO Hit: Liberace movie starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon nearly breaks record Behind the Candelabra, the Steven Soderbergh-directed Liberace biopic starring Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his lover-chauffeur Scott Thorson, was first aired Sunday evening on HBO. The result: 2.4 million television viewers, the largest audience for an HBO original film in nearly a decade. Another 1.1 million viewers watched a repeat broadcast later in the evening. (Photo: Michael Douglas as Liberace, Matt Damon as Scott Thorson in Behind the Candelabra.) Curiously, the flamboyantly gay Behind the Candelabra trailed only another (much more sedate) HBO biopic about the relationship between two disparate men: Joseph Sargent’s Something the Lord Made, about heart surgery pioneers Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and Vivien Thomas (Mos Def). According to Nielsen, Something the Lord Made was watched by 2.6 million people in late May 2004. Behind the Candelabra: HBO hit...

The Rules Of The Game (Criterion) Jean Renoir’s classic from 1939 was met with a riot at its premiere and was severely cut by its distributor, available only in truncated form for two decades until it was restored to the grandeur for which it is celebrated today. A biting comedy of manners set in the upstairs and downstairs of a French country estate, the film bitterly vivisects the bourgeoisie with a gentle ferocity that will tickle the laughter in your throat. Renoir co-stars as Octave. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Introduction to the film by Renoir; Commentary written by scholar Alexander Sesonske and read by Peter Bogdanovich; Comparison of the film’s two endings; Selected scene analysis by Renoir scholar Chris Faulkner; Featurettes and vintage film clips; Part one of David Thomson’s “Jean Renoir” BBC documentary; Video essay; Interviews with Renoir, crew members,...

Cologne, Germany -- "Entourage" star Adrian Grenier, celebrity philanthropist Sir Bob Geldof, German star Nora Tschirner ("Rabbit Without Ears") and Oscar-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond ("Close Encounters of the Third Kind") will be among the VIPs attending this year's Zurich Film Festival, which runs Sept. 23 – Oct. 3.
Zurich received worldwide attention last year after director Roman Polanski, en route to accept the festival's lifetime achievement award, was arrested by Swiss police on a decades-old sex charge. For its 6th edition, Zurich is hoping cinema, not scandal, will be in the spotlight.
Other luminaries making the trip to Zurich are directors Milos Forman, who will receive a retrospective tribute at the fest, and Oliver Stone, whose "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" closes the event. Also set to attend is actor Frank Langella ("Frost/Nixon") and German actress Johanna Wokalek ("Pope Joan," "The Baader Meinhof Complex").
