What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #21

13 December 2009 2:19 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

On top of everything below I recently received the Mel Brooks Collection on Blu-ray and watched a pair of Brooks's films I hadn't seen yet (Twelve Chairs and Silent Movie). The set contains seven more films, all on Blu-ray as well as six all-new featurettes exclusive to Blu-ray (such as, Silent Movie has a trivia track as well as a new 24-minute featurette focusing on silent films and how they inspired the movie). Also included are Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, History of the World - Part I, To Be or Not To Be, Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. I will have a full review of the complete set as soon as I can and hopefully before it's released this Tuesday. Stay tuned for that, but for now let's have a look at what else I watched and then hear from you!

"Nine" Premieres in London

Updated through 12/5.

Director Rob Marshall and much of his starry cast walked the red carpet in London last night for the world premiere of Nine, an adaptation of the musical by Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston which opened on Broadway in 1982 and which, you'll have heard, is loosely based on Federico Fellini's 8½ (1963). Tim Teeman was there for the Times: "If you haven't seen or don't know the original musical, and if you are seduced by the spectacular trailers, you might expect Nine to be a glittering cavalcade of frouffed and bouffed leading ladies (Penélope Cruz and Nicole Kidman among them), prowling slinkily around leading man Daniel Day-Lewis. But Nine is one of those rare things: a sombre musical, as gritty as it is glittery." »

Rob Marshall's Musical Nine Gets One Final Theatrical Trailer

30 November 2009 7:21 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

The Weinstein Company has released another trailer for Rob Marshall's musical Nine, which was derived from an Italian play by Mario Fratti which was inspired by Federico Fellini's autobiographical film 8½. This new trailer is a bit more conventional than the previous two in that it finally gives us a bit of insight into the plot of the film as well as a variety of songs showcasing the talents of Fergie, Penelope Cruz, and more. But still no display of Daniel Day-Lewis' musical chops. Oscar bait or not, a musical based on Federico Fellini's 8½ is something that I can't stop looking forward to when it's released this Christmas. Fire this trailer up! Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen I know I shouldn't be surprised the Blu-ray, 2-disc DVD and single-disc DVD are the numbers 1, 2 and 3 best-sellers at Amazon this week, but for some reason I would have thought all the negative talk about this film surrounding its release would have discouraged folks to throw to down their hard-earned cash to endure this pummeling one more time. However, I can say it is nice to see prices on Blu-rays are dropping slightly, so much to the point the Blu-ray edition of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is actually $3 less than the 2-disc DVD, at only $19.99. That's all I really have to say about this one. Monsoon Wedding (Criterion Collection) I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition of this one (read that here) and was really impressed with the entire package, which not only includes Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding, »

Fellini's '8 1/2', Wenders' 'Paris, Texas' and Soderbergh's 'Che' Coming to Criterion Blu-ray

16 October 2009 2:41 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Anyone that reads this site even on a semi-regular basis probably knows I absolutely love Federico Fellini's 8½ and that is one of the major reasons I am so looking forward to Rob Marshall's musical adaptation Nine. So, to learn Criterion is bringing the Fellini classic to Blu-ray with a brand new 52-minute documentary on Fellini's lost alternate ending for 8½ is almost too much for me to handle and is certainly too long to wait.

Along with the upcoming arrival of 8½, Criterion has also announced Blu-ray and DVD releases for Steven Soderbergh's Che and Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas. Details on these three titles are detailed below, but don't go yet there is a little more...

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Tullio Pinelli has died at the age of 100.

The Italian stage and film scribe passed away on 7 March in Rome.

Beginning his career in the 1940s, Pinelli was best known for his collaborations with director Federico Fellini.

Together, they earned recognition for movies like 1953's I Vitelloni, 1954's La Strada, 1960's La Dolce vita and 1963's 8 1/2 - all of which were nominated for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay Academy Awards.

Pinelli was also noted for his work on Pietro Germi's 1951 crime film Four Ways Out, starring Gina Lollobrigida, and Fellini's La voce della luna in 1990.

The star is also widely acknowledged for his contributions to Italian cinema's golden age with Monicelli comedies like 1975's Amici miel and 1981's Il Marchese del Grillo.
