1891 Miriam Cooper silent film star of the Dw Griffith wing of Hollywood (Intolerance, Birth of a Nation)

1903 Dean Jagger Oscar winner for the war drama Twelve O'Clock High. Can't say I've seen that one. Anyone?

1923 Gene Callahan started working in feature films in 1960. He'd won two Oscars for Art Direction (The Hustler and America, America) by April, 1964. Quick study, yes? I imagine he had great stories to tell: his first movie scenery was chewed by none other Liz (BUtterfield 8) and Brando (The Fugitive Kind) and he worked right up until his death, closing a fine career out with those Steel Magnolias and Reese Witherspoon's debut Man in the Moon. If you haven't seen the latter, I recommend. Sweet movie and Reese had full star charisma even at 14.

1943 Joni Mitchell ♫ oh I could drink a case of you, darling... and I'd still be on my feet

Top 7 Actors playing Athletes in Sports Films

3 October 2009 7:30 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

With Whip It swirling its way into theaters, it’s a wonder no one has fully acknowledged the absolutely amazing athletic work these brave actresses have put into the final product. Let’s face it, not all actors can “bring it” when it comes to believably portraying a real-life athlete.

Truth of the matter is, it’s about as rare a feat as you’re likely to see capably pulled off in Hollywood. Ellen Page (who will more than likely make a later edition of this list) made frantically scuttering around a cylindrical death-track look effortless, even graceful. Hell, the entire cast made roller derby look like the ballet with brute violence. This got me to thinking – Which other Hollywood actors have been the most convincing athletes on the big screen? They deserve their due (to go along with their millions of »

"The Paul Newman Tribute Collection" Now Available On DVD From Fox Home Entertainment

28 September 2009 5:20 AM, PDT | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

Approximately a year after his death, the legacy of Paul Newman continues to live on through Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment with a 17-disc collection of over 27 hours of the Academy Award winning actor's films as well as a 136-page book with never before seen images.

The "Paul Newman Tribute Collection" features some of his best yet perhaps more unnoticed work, which includes "Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man," collector's editions of "The Verdict," "The Hustler," and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (which also marks the 40th anniversary of the film) and a special edition disc of "The Towering Inferno." Although some titles such as "The Color of Money," for which Newman won an Academy Award for his performance are missing, the latest tribute set to the actor is still an interesting collection of some of the films from his over 50-year career that might have been missed but are still worthy of seeing. »

Party Favors: Trumbo

23 September 2009 10:48 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

Seattle – Dalton Trumbo was one of the biggest names in screenwriting who for the longest time wasn’t allowed to show his name on the screen. He won two Oscars, but wasn’t allowed to step onto the stage.

At the peak of his career in 1947, he was brought before the House Un-American Activities Committee to testify about communists in Hollywood films. Like other screenwriters before the Huac, he refused to answer the questions. Their decision to not name names got them blacklisted in the industry and sent to prison. After nearly a year behind bars, Dalton secretly returned to screenwriting. He used fake names and front writers on various project. It wasn’t till 1960 when his name accompanied Exodus and Spartacus that the blacklist was broken.

Trumbo is a documentary about the writer that was originally a play written by his son Christopher Trumbo. The play had actors reading »

New on DVD: "30 Rock" rocks, Seth Rogen: Mall Cop and Ol' Blue Eyes is back

23 September 2009 1:19 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

That season of 30 Rock that just won another Emmy? It's on DVD. As are a controversial comedy with Seth Rogen and a lavish box devoted to a mixed bag of Paul Newman movies.

Read on for more!

I can't begin to imagine why any of you aren't already watching this brilliantly hilarious sitcom, but 30 Rock - Season Three is available to those of you who haven't been converted (as well as those who need repeated viewings to catch all of the rapid-fire gags).

This season contains two of my favorite episodes—"Believe in the Stars," in which a prescription-drug–addled Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) shares a flight from Chicago with Oprah Winfrey, and "Reunion," where Liz begrudgingly attends her high-school reunion to discover that she wasn't a picked-on nerd, as she'd remembered, but actually a bully.

Critics were sharply divided (literally, with a 51% at Rotten Tomatoes) over Observe and Report, »

Sdcc 2009: The Stars of Iron Man 2 Speak!

25 July 2009 8:17 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Sam Rockwell and director Jon Favreau speak out

Two years ago at the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con, director Jon Favreau unveiled the first look at his upcoming film, a film that most were unsure of at best. Some thought of it as scraping the bottom of the barrel of the comic books that haven't been adapted for film, with this supposed B-league character. By the time the 2007 Con was over, the hot topic of the entire event was Favreau's Iron Man, which, of course, went on to be a huge box office sensation. Naturally, a sequel will follow and Favreau again has come to San Diego to present a little tidbit from Iron Man 2, despite only wrapping production last week. Favreau also hit up the press corps, bringing stars Robert Downey Jr. along with franchise newcomers Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Sam Rockwell »

Fox Releasing 'The Paul Newman Tribute DVD Collection'

6 July 2009 1:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

It's tough to lose a legend like Paul Newman, and the rush of DVDs, biographies, and rumor mongering don't make it any easier. The rush of merchandising seems to walk a fine line between actually honoring the person, and pure graveyard profit. You can decide what category Fox's upcoming Paul Newman Tribute Collection falls into. I'm going to err on the side of classy, even at its steep price of $89.98, because it contains a total of 17 DVDs. The list includes:

The Long, Hot Summer (the film that Newman Joanne Woodward met on)

Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys

From the Terrace

Exodus

The Hustler Collector's Edition

Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man

What a Way to Go!

Hombre

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Collector's Edition

The Towering Inferno Special Edition

Buffalo Bill and the Indians Or Sitting Bull's History Lesson

Quintet

The Verdict Collector's Edition

Paul Newman Tribute DVD Set Due in September

1 July 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

It's hard to believe that Paul Newman died almost a year ago. He was the last specimen of a certain breed of actor, as well as being a pretty damn charitable human being. He didn't care about fame and couldn't be bothered by its many trappings, although he absolutely loved the work. Anytime you give great performances over five decades - and he did right up through his TV movie Empire Falls - you don't get there by accident.

Fox Home Entertainment will release a massive Paul Newman Tribute Collection on September 22nd. For the time being, it's just a standard format DVD release, because some of the movies it includes aren't ready for Blu-ray yet. A lot of times, these movie star collections have one good flick and a bunch of B-movies or films you already know you want to avoid. Because stars make movies for different studios, it's tough for Fox to grab, »

Frances Ethel Gumm at 87

10 June 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Had Judy Garland not died tragically at 47 of an accidental overdose she would be turning 87 years-old today. Okay, so she might have died by now but we would have had much more of her work to enjoy. To give you an idea of how young that is for a world class entertainer, consider people who outlived her.

Had Frank Sinatra died at 47 his career would have ended with The Manchurian Candidate. He'd have never recorded his signature song "My Way" or any of his live records. Had Shirley Maclaine died at 47, she would never have sent up Debbie Reynolds in Postcards from the Edge or made Terms of Endearment which was arguably her greatest screen triumph. Had her co-star Jack Nicholson died at 47, Terms... would have been his last film: no Prizzi's Honor, Witches of Eastwick, Ironweed, The Departed, About Schmidt. Had Paul Newman, only three years Judy's junior, »

Fast Eddie Fathered Carrie White

16 March 2009 5:30 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

.

Ja from Mnpp here. I watched The Hustler yesterday for the first time, and every time Piper Laurie was on-screen (as Eddie's usually-sloshed lover Sarah) all I could hear was the future echo of that career-defining "roadhouse whiskey" speech Laurie would give 15 years later in Carrie. What do we really know of Carrie's father after all? Just that he puts his drunken hands all over her mother Margaret and Margaret liked it, she liked it!!!

Sarah liked it so much that when Eddie recommended she get treatment for her drinking problem, she she slid into his arms and slurred "I'm getting my treatment right here."

I hear ya, sister. That's some treatment.

When was the last time you couldn't watch one performance by an actor without it being colored and reshaped by another performance of theirs that's so iconic to you that it infiltrates their every cinematic moment that you see? »

Oscar's Biggest Blunders

7 February 2009 3:26 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

As we creep closer to the 2009 Academy Awards, prognosticators look back as much as forward to try and determine who the favorites will be. By looking back, I mean to suggest that past Academy choices perhaps unfairly paint them in a certain light, and support the group's predictability and oft-whispered bias. For instance, feel good films generally trump depressors. Oscar loves a comeback story almost as much as they love to reward seasoned veterans with lead acting awards and fresh faces in the supporting roles (particularly supporting actress). And despite a requisite surprise or two every year, they mostly play it safe. Usually painfully boringly safe. That, and the fact they get it wrong more often than they get it right. So I present a glance at the ten most egregiously shortsighted Oscars ever given.

I'm focusing solely on the big one: Best Picture. If I included anything and everything, »

Tammy Grimes & Marian Seldes Join Author David Sheward to Discuss George C. Scott Feb. 3

31 January 2009 3:01 PM, PST | BroadwayWorld.com | See recent BroadwayWorld.com news »

George C. Scott created some of the 20th century's most memorable performances on stage and screen-the cunning prosecutor in Anatomy of a Murder, the manipulative gambler in The Hustler, the buffoonishly warmongering chief of staff in Dr. Strangelove, and, of course, the brilliant and rebellious Patton. He also played Willy Loman, Richard III, Mussolini, Scrooge, Fagin, and countless others. But his offstage life was as filled with drama and controversy as any of the lives he portrayed with such intensity. He refused the Oscar for Patton, battled with TV networks to include realistic elements in his series "East Side/West Side," invested (and lost) his own money on Broadway and in the scandalous film The Savage Is Loose, married five times (twice to Colleen Dewhurst) and had a tempestuous affair with Ava Gardner, traveled to Vietnam at the height of the war to write an article for Esquire, and weathered a damaging sexual harassment suit. »
