- Carol Garth Baldwin: [to Chuck] I'm leaving here, with you or without you, but I want you to know something... I'd be a good wife for you. A DAMN good wife. I'm smarter than you in some ways and I know what's good about you and I know what's bad and I'm not afraid to tell you... I have two children who love you. They love you and I love you... and you're not easy to love, but you do need someone... and I love you. I love you, I love you.
- Carol Garth Baldwin: When you go... take me with you. One day soon, you're gonna come to me and say, "Carol, I have to go." There won't be time to talk or to think of anything. And there'll be a car waitin', and then a plane, and you'll say "Carol, honey, I have to go..." Isn't that right?
- Chuck Glover: [Softly] Yes, that is right.
- Carol Garth Baldwin: [Pleading] Take me with you.
- Chuck Glover: [Referring to his drunkenness] I apologize for the other night.
- Ella Garth: First and only time I ever liked you!
- [Slams the door in his face]
- Chuck Glover: [to Carol] Marry me?
- [Carol says nothing]
- Chuck Glover: I know I'll probably regret it, and I'm sure you'll regret it... but... get your hat, and a coat, wash up. Alright?
- [Carol nods yes]
- Chuck Glover: The most dangerous erosion is not to land - it's when your capacity for living gets eroded.
- Carol Garth Baldwin: You're gettin' awful human, aren't yuh, Chuck?
- Chuck Glover: I was always human, wasn't I.
- Chuck Glover: Betty, what, uh... How would you go about getting her off the island?
- Betty Jackson: [sternly] I'd let her drown.
- Chuck Glover: Well, that's one way.
- Ella Garth: Sam, I've decided I'm gonna buy Old Blue. How much you want for him?
- Sam Johnson: Oh, I don't wanna sell Old Blue, Miss Ella.
- Ella Garth: I didn't ask ya if you wanted to sell 'im, did I? I say I'm gonna buy him! I'm gonna give ya - oh, I'll give ya $15 for him. Whatsa matter? He ain't worth more'n that, is he?
- Sam Johnson: No, ma'am, he ain't worth nuthin' but I ain't gonna sell 'im.
- Ella Garth: Well ya gotta sell 'im, Sam, 'cause I'm gonna buy 'im. How'm I gonna buy 'im, lessin' you sell 'im?
- Sam Johnson: I don't know, but I ain't gonna sell 'im.
- Ella Garth: Sam Johnson, you're sellin' 'im and that's that!
- Sam Johnson: No ma'am, I ain't gonna sell 'im. Old Blue is mine, and I ain't gonna sell 'im even to you. You ain't got no right to make me.
- Ella Garth: Well now that's true, isn't it Sam? Come to think of it I don't have the right, now do I?
- Ella Garth: You see young man, Sam and me, we don't sell. Sam don't sell his dog and I don't sell my land, that I poured my heart's blood into!
- Sam Johnson: After a man hits Lee Remick, Robert Earl Jones raises his arms and says, "Don't hit a woman! Don't hit a woman!"
