Parents Guide for
Psycho (1960)

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this new feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes .

Sex & Nudity

In the opening scene, Marion and Sam are shown in bed in their underclothes after they have presumably had sex. After Marion has been stabbed while in the shower, she reaches for the curtain as she dies and we briefly glimpse her bare breasts (this shot is quite blurry and will most likely go unnoticed to viewers.)

Violence & Gore

Marion is stabbed repeatedly in various areas while in the shower. A man is stabbed in the chest with blood splattering onto his face. He falls down a staircase, where he is stabbed repeatedly once again. None of these scenes show any actual violence or are excessively graphic, but some blood is shown.

Profanity

There is one use of the phrase "Oh God," as well as a few sexual references/innuendo. Other than this, there is no profanity throughout the remainder of the film.

None

Both murder scenes are quite terrifying, especially the famous shower murder. Also, the scene where Mrs. Bates's skeleton is found by Lila is reasonably frightening. Several other suspenseful scenes are depicted throughout the film, while accompanied by intense music.

An extended part of a scene, that most people overlook, is AFTER Mrs. Bates's skeleton is found, when the killer, Norman Bates, jumps out of the doorway, to kill Lila (the scene scared me to death the first time I saw it).
