While Sister Wives’ goal was to show viewers a little piece of what plural marriage has to offer, it has its drawbacks. Kody Brown reflects on the progression of the show and how the conflict was good for ratings. However, he admits drama may sell, but it has hurt the Brown family.
Reality Sinks In For Kody Brown
Undeniably, the Brown family is facing turmoil like never before after the unexpected loss of Garrison Brown. While there are suspicions there are connections to the family drama airing on Sister Wives, it isn’t a simple matter. Sadly, suicide is generally a symptom of more preexisting complications. Many believe that Kody Brown is to blame for Garrison’s downward spiral, while others recognize it isn’t a time to place blame. However, Kody has been open about the show causing pain for the family.

“Abbott Elementary” star Lisa Ann Walter shared with People that she’d be up for revisiting her 1998 version of the classic “Parent Trap,” telling the outlet, “Yes, absolutely.” She was only too happy to speak about her “Parent Trap” costar, Lindsay Lohan, at the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday.
“I would love to go back for another version of it — or if [Lohan] wants to come on to our show, I’d love that, too,” she added.
This isn’t the first time Walter has discussed bringing Lohan onto the hit ABC sitcom. In January, she told Entertainment Weekly that the younger actress could play a relative. “I guess we’d have to make her a relative since we’re both redheads — since I’m a ‘redhead,’ and she actually is,” Walter explained.
In February, Walter brought up the possibility of reviving her “Parent Trap” character again, this time at the SAG Awards.

Set in the 1920s, Has Anybody Seen My Gal? gets its name from the once-popular jazz song recorded by the California Ramblers in 1925. Loosely based upon the Eleanor Porter novel Oh Money! Money! (she was also the author behind Pollyanna), the 1952 jukebox musical comedy was given the full Technicolor treatment – a visual bee’s knees in Kino Lorber’s sterling release.
The Universal Pictures title makes good use of Twenties tunes such as ‘Tiger Rag,’ ‘When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin’ Along,’ ‘It Ain’t Gonna Rain No More,’ ‘Gimme a Little Kiss, Will Ya, Huh?’ - and of course, ‘Has Anybody Seen My Gal?’. It was directed by studio regular Douglas Sirk, who would go on to make his name with lush, slyly ironic melodramas such as Magnificent Obsession, All That Heaven Allows, Written on the Wind (all with Rock Hudson), There's Always Tomorrow,...

2023 may have been a complicated year for the film industry, but it was a great year for movies. So, hey: No pressure, 2024.
As we sit here in the January doldrums, we can only look at the months and ahead and hope. Will those massively anticipated sequels live up to the hype? Will the latest releases from bona fide masters be worth the wait? Will everything that is supposed to come out this year actually come out this year? The anticipation is killing us.
This is far from a comprehensive list of every intriguing movie hitting theaters in 2024, but it does represent the titles that have the /Film team's attention already. Naturally, we expect dozens of incredible surprises to emerge from out of nowhere, especially as the film festival season starts to kick off. And since we're not psychics, we had to stick to the movies that we know are coming out this year,...

When Larry Gelbart brought "M*A*S*H" to television, he had dauntingly spacious shoes to fill. Robert Altman's 1970 film, based on a novel by Richard Hooker, was a New Hollywood sensation that mined the Korean War (an obvious Vietnam substitute) for edgy, hard R-rated laughs. It was the third-highest-grossing movie of the year and racked up five Academy Award nominations (including one for Best Picture). Matching the quality of the film was challenging enough. The biggest problem facing Gelbart was retaining the ribald tone, a tall order considering network television's conservative content standards in the early 1970s.
Gelbart's solution was to sand down the sharp misogynistic edges of the characters and embrace a more humanistic gallows sense of humor. The small-screen version of the 4077th was certainly mischievous, but they weren't mean-spirited. They would've never pulled the humiliating shower prank on Hot Lips from the film. Yes, there were extreme personality clashes,...

Long ago, the 1950s ended and Disney never really got over it.
With the right kind of eyes, a casual viewer can look at the early days of Walt Disney Studios as their heyday. Walt himself was still alive and using his aggressive business acumen to produce visually innovative and award-winning animated shorts that were helping put the studio on the map. Without the Silly Symphonies, animation would not be the same. Warner Bros. outstripped Disney's fare with their cheekier, funnier shorts in the 1940s and 1950s, but the folks at Warner's Termite Terrace were very open about the fact that Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes were ripping off Disney's Silly Symphonies name. Disney Animation broke onto the scene in 1937 with the release of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," still celebrated as one of the best of all animated films to this day.

Many things about the Academy Awards have changed over the years, but for the past six decades there has been at least one constant: The red carpet. The hues have varied over the years, but it has always been some shade of red. Until this year.
On Wednesday outside the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, workers unspooled a champagne-coloured carpet as Jimmy Kimmel, who is hosting the 95th Oscars on Sunday, presided over the occasion.
“I think the decision to go with a champagne carpet over a red carpet shows how confident we are that no blood will be shed,” Kimmel said.
The decision to change the colour came from creative consultants Lisa Love, a longtime Vogue contributor, and Raúl Àvila, the creative director for the glamorous Met Gala in New York.

Warning: contains spoilers for Series 4 of Unforgotten
It’s been two years since the last season of ITV’s hit crime drama Unforgotten, and at long last it’s back on our screens.
After that shocking Series 4 finale, in which we said a heartbreaking goodbye to Dci Cassie Stuart (aka the incredible Nicola Walker), we’ve got plenty of questions about the Series 5 cast.
In this latest series, when a body is found in a boarded-up fireplace, the team gets to work trying to identify who the victim is, and how long they’ve been there. We also discover that the person filling Cassie’s very large detective shoes as Sunny’s new boss-slash-bestie will be the prickly Dci Jessica James, who doesn’t exactly make a great first impression.
Unlike the previous four series, Series 5 of Unforgotten will also be made available as a bingeable box-set on Itvx as...

Exclusive: Hayley Mills, still fondly remembered for Disney classics Pollyanna and The Parent Trap, is checking into The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel to take it on the road in the UK and then to London’s West End.
Strictly speaking, it’s a play based on the book (Deborah Moggach’s These Foolish Things) that spawned successful movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in 2011 and it’s 2015 sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Both pictures, starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy, did immensely well at the box office.
The screenplays for the films, directed by John Madden, were written by Ol Parker. However for the stage, Moggach has adapted her own tome about seven British retirees who depart the Home Counties of England to see out the sunset of their years at what they’re led to believe is a luxurious hotel in Bangalore, India.

Robert Morse, a legend of the New York stage who had a late-in-life resurgence as the eccentric businessman Bertram Cooper on “Mad Men,” is dead at the age of 90. His death was made public by writer-producer Larry Karaszewski on Twitter.
My good pal Bobby Morse has passed away at age 90. A huge talent and a beautiful spirit. Sending love to his son Charlie & daughter Allyn. Had so much fun hanging with Bobby over the years – filming People v Oj & hosting so many screenings pic.twitter.com/H1vCD3jjul
— Larry Karaszewski (@Karaszewski) April 21, 2022
Morse had some small roles on the boards beginning in the mid-1950s, then got his big break in “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in 1961. Indeed, this iconic Camelot-era musical later reworked into a film in which Morse also starred, worked as a significant wink to insiders when Morse appeared in “Mad Men” decades later.

One of this writer’s favorite films out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Relic is now available on VOD and is currently playing at select drive-in theaters around the U.S., courtesy of IFC Midnight. Last week, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with co-writer/director Natalie Erika James as well as the film’s trio of terrifyingly terrific actresses—Emily Mortimer, Bella Heathcote, and Robyn Nevin—for a roundtable discussion on their experiences collaborating together for Relic.
During the interview, they chatted about everything from their initial thoughts about the project, James’ wonderfully emotional script (which she co-wrote with Christian White), tackling their respective roles and the thematic elements of Relic, and more.
I would love to hear from the actresses, in terms of coming into this project. What was sort of the initial appeal of Relic that hooked you? And also, I was wondering if...

Our reader's choice "streaming film club" is going weekly since we're all soon stuck at home in this brave new world of Covid-19. This week you selected the Howard Hawks adventure romance classic Only Angels Have Wings (1939) starring Cary Grant and Jean Arthur so we'll be discussing that on Monday March 23rd so queue it up on the Criterion Channel. In second place was Disney's Pollyanna (1960) so we'll also discuss that on Wednesday March 25th so watch that one on Disney+ if you'd like to play along. Okay?
Last week's runner up film to Lady in a Cage was the romantic comedy Cactus Flower (1969) and Murtada and I decided to discuss it on the podcast (returning very soon) since it was such a close vote. So see, we're doing double duty to keep you thinking about movies when you're no longer allowed to go see them in theaters! *sniffle*

When Jennifer Aniston won a SAG Award Jan. 19, the mainstream media seized on one fact: She and her ex Brad Pitt were together in the winner’s circle. Woo-woo, hot stuff!
For gossip rags, that’s fun, but this angle misses the bigger picture. First, her award for “The Morning Show” was a nice validation for Apple TV Plus. Second, this was a project on which she and Reese Witherspoon are exec producers, meaning actor-producers have moved beyond the realm of “vanity productions,” as such deals used to be called for performers.
The 21st century has seen a sharp rise in actors with successful production companies. That list includes Sandra Bullock, Viola Davis, Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria and Nicole Kidman.
Though 2019 Oscar nominations inspired protests for lack of gender diversity among directors, the tallies in the best picture rank are better — not 50-50 yet, but getting there. Eight...

Interviewing Charlie Saldana in the quiet of his North Hollywood home, the 79-year-old working key grip still exudes the cool confidence of someone who’s spent a lifetime in partnership with one of Hollywood’s great directors: Clint Eastwood.
Saldana still possesses an actor’s looks, with a salt-white mustache and a full silver mane. He began his career building scaffolding for Disney’s “Pollyanna” in 1960, following military service in the 101st Airborne Division. Joining the grip union, he was employed by Hollywood’s blossoming TV industry on “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “Gomer Pyle, Usmc” “Hogan’s Heroes” and “The Mod Squad.” The neophyte grip learned his craft well.
Born in 1939 to Charles and Josephine Saldana, Charlie was raised with a strong work ethic that drove his rise in the industry. “Gaining grip skill was a layered, educative process,” he says.

Keala Settle, co-star of the smash movie musical The Greatest Showman, hit the stage at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theatre on Wednesday night to sing a killer rendition of the iconic Disneyland theme, “It’s a Small World,” the kickoff to a magical night as Oscar celebrated the writers of that tune: Disney legends Richard M Sherman and Robert B. Sherman.
So the lyrics might have said “it’s a small world,” but the lines outside the Academy to get into this sold-out tribute were anything but small, with upward of 100 turned away due to capacity issues. Every seat was taken, and some even tried sitting in the aisles for this once-in-a-lifetime show called The Sherman Brothers: A Hollywood Songbook, timed to Richard Sherman’s 90th birthday (the actual date was June 12). Two special awards were handed out at the first Academy Awards on May 16, 1929:
Charlie Chaplin, who had originally been nominated for lead actor and for comedy direction for his 1928 masterpiece “The Circus,” was withdrawn from those nominations when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ Board of Governors gave him a special award for his “versatility in writing, acting, directing and producing” the comedy.

Westerns are all about values: good and bad, law and lawlessness, etc. Joel McCrea and Frances Dee’s ‘bad man’ saga isn’t faith based, exactly, but it’s great for humanitarian values, the simple notion that the good in people should be encouraged. And one important detail may make it unique. Hint: John Milius might be strongly prejudiced against this picture.

Broadway’s delightful — but wickedly accurate — satire of big business was brought to movie screens almost intact, with the story, the stars, the styles and dances kept as they were in the long-running show that won a Pulitzer Prize. This is the place to see Robert Morse and Michele Lee at their best — it’s one of the best, and least appreciated movie musicals of the 1960s.

Old Yeller star Kevin Corcoran has died, aged 66.
Corcoran passed away at his family home, his family has confirmed to Deadline.
The former child actor is perhaps best known for starring as the youngest Coates brother Arliss in Disney's classic adaptation of Old Yeller.
Corcoran would later have memorable roles in family films Pollyanna, The Shaggy Dog, Swiss Family Robinson and Babes in Toyland during his childhood.
After leaving acting behind to attend college, Corcoran worked behind the scenes with Disney on Pete's Dragon and The New Mickey Mouse Club.
In later years, he worked as both a producer and director on the long-running thriller series Murder She Wrote.
He was given the prestigious Disney Legend award back in 2006.

Hayley Mills stars as the most optimistic orphan of all time in Disney's adaptation of Eleanor H Porter's much-loved children's story. She plays the titular, 12-year-old urchin who arrives in a small and rather glum American town, only to lift the spirits of everyone she meets. Jane Wyman and Richard Egan are among the grown ups who can't help but come round to Pollyanna's irresistible worldview.

Mary Grace Canfield, the character actress best known for playing Ralph Monroe on comedy series Green Acres, died on Saturday. She was 89.
Mary Grace Canfield Dies
Canfield's death at a Santa Barbara hospice was confirmed by her daughter, Phoebe Alexiades, to the Los Angeles Times. Alexiades said Canfield died after a battle with lung cancer.
On Green Acres, Canfield played one half of the Ralph and Alf, brother-sister carpenter duo opposite Sid Melton. Their work on a farm house owned by city transplants Oliver (Eddie Albert) and Lisa (Eva Gabor) never seemed to end. The humor of Canfield’s role was in the character’s rejection of feminine standards, providing a comical foil for Gabor’s character.
In addition to Green Acres, Canfield appeared on TV in The Love Boat, Bewitched and daytime soap opera General Hospital. On the big screen, Canfield appeared in Pollyanna, Half a House and Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Tom Hanks is entertaining as Walt Disney in this otherwise bland and sentimental effort, the festival's closing gala film
An enormous spoonful of sugar and the tiniest bit of medicine: it all goes down, just about. This is a warmly, in fact outrageously sentimental and self-congratulatory film from Disney about the master himself: the story of how in 1961 the wily genius Walt Disney – likably played by Tom Hanks – persuaded the grumpy British dame Pl Travers to come to Los Angeles and begin talks to sign away the screen rights to her legendary creation, Mary Poppins. It was a project Walt had been working on for 20 years. The director is John Lee Hancock, who made the intensely patriotic football picture The Blind Side.

In Robert Wiene’s 1920 dreamlike horror classic, veteran German actor Werner Krauss plays the mysterious Dr. Caligari, the apparent force behind a creepy somnambulist named Cesare and played by Conrad Veidt, who abducts beautiful Lil Dagover. The finale in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari has inspired tons of movies and television shows, from Fritz Lang's 1944 film noir The Woman in the Window to the last episode of the TV series St. Elsewhere. In addition, the film shares some key elements in common (suppposedly as a result of a mere coincidence) with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's 2011 thriller Shutter Island. The 1920 crime melodrama Outside the Law is not in any way related to Rachid Bouchareb's 2010 political drama. Instead, the Tod Browning-directed movie is a well-made entry in the gangster genre (long before the explosion a decade later). Browning, best known for his early '30s efforts Dracula and Freaks,...

"How did they ever make a movie of 'Lolita'?" asked the poster for Stanley Kubrick's 1962 film adaptation, which premiered 50 years ago this week (on June 12, 1962). Short answer, as many critics noted at the time: They didn't. That is, there was no way, given the Hollywood self-censorship of the era, to capture even a fragment of Vladimir Nabokov's controversial novel, even with a screenplay by Nabokov himself. In fact, it's remarkable that Kubrick managed to get a studio to let him adapt and distribute any version of the story. Today -- as the ill-fated 1997 "Lolita" movie showed -- no one in Hollywood would even touch the material. So how did Kubrick do it? He chose the right collaborators, starting with Nabokov; he filmed far enough away so that Hollywood couldn't touch him (a pattern he'd maintain for the rest of his career); he carefully politicked among the...

Former child star Hayley Mills was left disappointed after her parents forced her to return a diamond ring sent to her by a devoted fan - because the gift came with a marriage proposal.
The British actress was one of Disney's biggest young stars in the 1960s, winning acclaim for her roles in The Parent Trap and Pollyanna.
Mills was bombarded with fan mail from around the world, including lavish gifts - but one devotee left her parents uncomfortable after asking the teen for her hand in marriage.
She tells Britain's Daily Telegraph, "The only sense I got of my fame was the fan mail. There was a lot, mostly from people my age, and my parents were adamant that I replied to every letter. Often it was just signing a picture, but if I received a particularly nice letter or a present then I had to reply with a letter.
"I got some remarkable presents. Someone in Africa once sent me a monkey rug, and I was sent a diamond ring, which I was thrilled about, but it came with a proposal for marriage, so I was made to send it back."...

Insert Credit endeavors to suss out where you should be allotting your video game allowance, sifting out a single title from many and crowning it as The One Game You Need to Get This Week. Don't consider these reviews, gentle reader. Rather, think of Insert Credit as a mix of hands-on time, informed opinion and intuition.
For the week of November 29, 2010, you should insert credit into: "Disney Epic Mickey."
Everybody's been calling it "Epic Mickey" but the full name of the game includes the last name of the mega-entertainment company's founder Walt Disney, but it also now stands for a brand. For some, it's a saccharine, Pollyanna sensibility that's become shorthand for safe, bland entertainment.
It's easy to forget that there was a man behind the empire, a man full of the quirks and contradictions that we all possess. What "Disney Epic Mickey" restores is a bit of the variable...

Babysitter: She probably wanted to look older or like Hayley Mills. I don't know."Heaven to hear 60s child star Hayley Mills (a personal fav) referenced on Mad Men. Hayley is best remembered today for the back-to-back family friendly classics Pollyanna (1960) and The Parent Trap...

We're just getting back into The United States of Tara on Showtime and now Toni Collette is heading overseas. Deadline Hollywood reports that she and Ioan Gruffudd are starring in Foster -- a family film being shot in London that they describe as "a feel-good Sixth Sense." But it's more than just Casper-y. It seems that the supporting cast boasts Anne Reid, Richard E. Grant, and Hayley Mills. Yes, Ms. Child Star herself, who hasn't had a feature film since 2004's 2BPerfectlyHonest, and hasn't had a wide-spread feature since 1988's Appointment with Death.
Based on a 2005 short by Jonathan Newman (collaborating with producers Deepak Nayar), the film focuses on a couple (Collette and Gruffudd) who decide to adopt a child after their son is killed. "One day a boy unexpectedly arrives on their doorstep," which leads to the previously mentioned twist. Deadline's Tim Adler says: "It gives me shivers every time I think about it,...

The worst thing anyone's said to me? 'Your father has died'
Hayley Mills, 63, was born in London, the daughter of the actor John Mills and the writer Mary Hayley Bell. She began her acting career at the age of 12, when she was cast alongside her father in the 1959 movie Tiger Bay, a performance for which she won a Bafta. She later signed to Walt Disney, for whom starred in Pollyanna and The Parent Trap, and her other film credits include Whistle Down The Wind and Sky West And Crooked. Since 2007, she has been appearing in the ITV series Wild At Heart. She has two sons and divides her time between London and New York, where she lives with her partner.
When were you happiest?
Now. This is the best time of my life.
What is your greatest fear?
I have a horror of being in confined spaces. Potholing is my idea of hell.

In honor of Quentin Tarantino week here at Wamg, this column will tackle the 1968 British psycho-thriller Twisted Nerve. A music highlight of Tarantino’s first Kill Bill film in 2003 occurs during the scene when Darryl Hannah’s eye-patched Elle Driver is walking down the hospital corridors intending to dispatch Uma Thurman and she’s whistling this haunting tune that is at the same time both childlike and threatening. Curious, I read the closing credits and the strange song was identified as the theme from the movie Twisted Nerve composed by Bernard Herrmann. That title was familiar as I had its cool psychedelic U.S. one-sheet in my collection but I’d never seen the film and immediately became determined to track it down. I was able to secure a British Pal import of the film and was pleased to find Twisted Nerve an excellent, nasty little forgotten thriller about a warped young psychopath.

Academy Award winner and Hollywood legend Karl Malden died yesterday at the age of 97 of natural causes. He has had one of the longest and most successful careers of any American actor and starred in some of the most Iconic films of all time (On the Waterfront, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Birdman of Alcatraz, Patton) and starred in the 1970s TV drama The Streets of San Francisco. But what made Malden a house hold name were the American Express commercials he made in the 70s and 80s with the catchphrase “Don’t leave home without it.” Born Mladen Sekulovich on March 22, 1912 in Chicago, he was the son of a Serbian father and a Czech mother. His father was a steelworker and as a young man Malden took up the profession for a few years. He began acting in high school and in 1937 moved to New York to try his hand on Broadway.

A Streetcar Named Desire in 1947 [via]
This past week has been very rough on the entertainment industry and our cultural history. Today, with Karl Malden's death, we've lost the last remaining principal cast member of Tennessee William's legendary play turned movie A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). Now, Malden's career was much larger than mama's boy Harold "Mitch" Mitchel but that classic role, which he originated and owned, is a vital part of his legacy.
Strangely, Jessica Tandy's Tony honor (the original "Blanche DuBois") was the show's only attention from 'Broadway's Oscars' if you will. All the principles transferred to the movie except Tandy who was replaced by the cinema's most legendary southern belle (even though she was British) Vivien Leigh. When it came to the Oscars, three of the four actors (including Malden) collected statues. In typical Oscar fashion the performance most often regarded as game changing for the entire...
