At $500m, James Cameron's Avatar is the most expensive movie ever. Yet for all its brilliant imagery, is it any more than a smug sermon?

Before I read that James Cameron was born 55 years ago in Kapuskasing, Ontario, the only thing I knew about the town was that when, during their 1951 tour of Canada, Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip stopped there for an hour, they were greeted by a banner headline in the local paper reading "Kapuskasing by no mere fluke, welcomes the Princess and the Duke".

He got his first film job in 1980 as art director on Roger Corman's low-budget Sf film Battle Beyond the Stars, a transposition to outer space of The Magnificent Seven. It was scripted by John Sayles, who was to remain an independent film-maker of personal, modestly financed movies, while Cameron was soon to make exponentially expensive blockbusters.

His seventh feature, Titanic, is »

Cinematical Seven: Worst Genre-Swapping Remakes

17 December 2009 7:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

It's hard to believe anyone thought it was a good idea to turn 8½ into a musical, let alone Federico Fellini. But apparently the filmmaker was happy to see his best work adapted for the stage back in 1982. I guess it had worked well enough for Nights of Cabiria, though the film version of that musical, Sweet Charity, was a tremendous box office flop. I imagine the new film of Nine will have a similar fate. Yet even if it's somehow a hit, that won't excuse the fact that it's a choppy, stagy, soulless simplification of one of the most personal and expressionistic pieces of cinematic art ever produced.

Not all drama-turned-musical remakes are so awful, though the concept of redoing a movie in another genre is pretty funny ever since people started playing with the idea on YouTube. With Zhang Yimou's action-comedy take on the Coen Brothers' Blood Simple »

Val Avery, Character Actor, Dead At Age 85

15 December 2009 10:24 AM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Val Avery, a popular character actor of stage and screen, has died at age 85. The New York City resident passed away in his Greenwich Village apartment. Avery was a familiar face to all movie goers in the 60s and 70s. Some of his roles were bit parts, but others were more prominent. He played the corset salesman whose determination to see an Indian get buried with dignity on Boot Hill sets up the first action confrontation in The Magnificent Seven. In the 1971 film The Anderson Tapes,Avery played the dumb but brutal racist thug 'Socks'. For more on his life and career click here »

Birthday Suits: Deserve's Got Nothin' To Do With it

Celebrating the birthdays of the cinematic peoples daily. If you were born on 11/22 shout it out in the comments. How will you celebrate these fine folks, listed below?

Scarlett, Mark and Mads

1920 Anne Crawford Israeli born British actress of the 40s. Died when she was only 35.

1923 Arthur Hiller Canadian director. Oscar nominated for mega-hit Love Story (1970). Also known for comedies like The Out-of-Towners, Silver Streak and Outrageous Fortune and some erratically interesting choices like The Americanization of Emily, Man of La Mancha and Hollywood's first mainstream gay film Making Love (1982).

1932 Robert Vaughn The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and one of The Magnificent Seven

1940 Terry Gilliam crazy indispensible auteur. He doesn't deserve all the funding / filmmaking problems he's had of late. But, sadly, I can't really recommend The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus which is messy in dozens of ways

The "Dollars Trilogy" Free on Hulu

5 November 2009 10:27 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

A quick heads-up for Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood fans. All three of their "Man with No Name" westerns are now up on Hulu for free viewing. Hulu is only going to have these movies up until the end of November, so don't waste time, pilgrim. You can watch all three films right here.

A Fistful of Dollars originally followed the trend of remaking Akira Kurosawa's samurai films as westerns. I say trend, but really there was only, what, The Magnificent Seven? Fistful uses the plot of Kurosawa's Yojimbo as its premise, then reshapes it into Leone's own signature style. Then came the pseudo-sequel, For a Few Dollars More. Leone never meant for the three films to be a trilogy, but it just turned out that way due to Eastwood's same look and acting style in all three.  The Good, The Bad and the Ugly is a prequel of sorts, »

Flu and Fancy Footwork Frolic on 'Dancing with the Stars'

3 November 2009 8:41 AM, PST | TheInsider.com | See recent The Insider news »

The flu is dominating "Dancing with the Stars" this season like the plague. Derek Hough had to sit out a few weeks ago and on Monday night, Lacey Schwimmer was replaced by Anna Trebunskaya to partner Mark Dacascos. Meanwhile, the other pro dancers and celebrities are fighting through the sniffles and coughs as they samba, quickstep, and foxtrot closer to the coveted mirror ball trophy. As Donny Osmond spun partner Kym Johnson in their quickstep, the under the weather entertainer felt as if "The room was spinning. During the quickstep, I was dancing on the ceiling." After being in the industry 47 years, the seasoned performer understands, "It's showbiz, you fight through it…I've done so many shows where the curtain comes down and you collapse." Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff have not put the tissues and lozenges away just yet, but they are bringing out the gloves as they eye the prize. »

Sylvester Stallone's New Expendables Photo

29 September 2009 4:00 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Sylvester Stallone spoke to Empire magazine about his upcoming "The Expendables" action flick and also revealed a brand new photo of himself standing around countless dead bodies. Check out the photo below. Regarding the title: "It's from Rambo 2. The girl I'm falling in love with says, 'Why do you do what you do?' I say, 'I'm expendable.' She says, 'What does that mean?' I say, 'It's like someone invites you to a party and you don't show up. It doesn't really matter.' And these men, they live a life that... They're expendable. If they're gone, the world will go on. No one will miss them, They don't have families, all they have is each other. They're expendable to the rest of the world, but they're not expendable to each other . they're just necessary. So it's a real brotherhood. I think it has a lot of heart for an action film. »

I don't know about you, but Sylvester Stallone looks pretty hot in this picture! Ha!

Thanks to our friends at Empire Online, you are able to see a first look at "The Expendables" billed as an action film to end all action films. And why not? Actor-director Stallone assembled the best, toughest action guys. There's Jet Li, Jason Statham, Randy Couture, and Dolph Rundgren. Even Mickey Rourke is in on the fun. But wait, there's more! Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis will also do cameos!

Stallone himself said, "Whereas the 'Oceans 11' films were an ensemble for good looking guys, this is an ensemble for ugly tough guys."

The plot revolves around a group of mercenaries who are hired to get rid of a South American dictator. Lionsgate is releasing the film on April 23rd, 2010.

Here's some more great quotes from Stallone as told to Empire Online.

New 'Expendables' Photo Revealed

29 September 2009 9:50 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Empire recently spoke to Sylvester Stallone about his forthcoming action ensemble flick The Expendables. The story also revealed a new photo — which you can see directly above — in which Sly seems to be standing amidst several dead soldiers...or mercenaries...or dudes in army fatigues.

Film buffs will pick up that the title of The Expendables is taken directly from Rambo: First Blood Part II. Here's what Stallone had to say:

"The girl I'm falling in love with says, 'Why do you do what you do?' I say, 'I'm expendable.' She says, 'What does that mean?' I say, 'It's like someone invites you to a party and you don't show up. It doesn't really matter.' And these men, they live a life that... They're expendable. If they're gone, the world will go on. Sylvester Stallone on The Expendables and a New Still from the Movie

29 September 2009 2:53 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Sylvester Stallone is hoping to turn back the clock with his latest film, The Expendables, to a time before CGI became the staple ingredient of Hollywood action movies. In an interview with Empire, Stallone said:

What I wanted to do was just try to do something that is a little different. Today, technically, we're incredibly gifted and versatile with CGI, and I wanted to do a film that was more about men, doing things that we did back in the '80s and '90s that were a little more mano a mano — actual, physical stunts. It's also a story that isn't super-gigantic; it's almost a believable story. To aid him in this endeavor, Stallone has hired an an all-star cast of movie tough-guys that includes Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, and even the "Governator" himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. I guess it's kinda like The Dirty Dozen, »

Playstation 3 Review - Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood

27 September 2009 5:44 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

In the long and convoluted history of sequels and prequels, most number twos end up aptly in the toilette where they belong. “Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood,” however, quickly debunks history by delivering a prequel that is not only better than the original, “Call of Juarez,” but also a game with a solid story that can easily stand on its own. From the moment you begin playing Bound in Blood, you will be thrust right back in the days of the Old West or at least the old west you envisioned from movies like “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” or “The Magnificent Seven.” The Old West was all about outlaws, sheriffs, preachers, showdowns, outlaws, Indians, deserts and women – all of which are deftly captured in this excellent, albeit brief game. Well, let me correct myself. Not all of these things are captured correctly. The typical problems with »

Josh Hartnett to Star in Post-Apocalyptic Western

11 September 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Despite all the attempts at a comeback, the western genre will never be as popular as it was half a century ago. But could the genre appeal more to 21st century moviegoers by being set in some post-apocalyptic future rather than the dusty, tumbleweed-ridden past? It's an idea that's been thought of before, and now it's being thought of again by many in Hollywood.

In a way, the upcoming adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" is like a western, and January's "The Book of Eli" is even moreso. Now Variety reports of another near-future western called "Gunslinger." Josh Hartnett will star as one of two brothers seeking revenge on a gang that killed their parents. French filmmaker Chris Nahon ("Blood: The Last Vampire") will be at the helm when "Gunslinger" shoots in Canada next year.

Let's just forget the fact they need to re-title the film, as it falls »

Movie Alert! "The Magnificent Seven" Film Festival On TCM Thursday Night

2 September 2009 5:42 PM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

On Thursday, September 3, Turner Classic Movies (North America) will present all four of the Magnificent Seven films back-to-back starting with the original 1960 classic. It took six years for the first sequel, Return of the Seven, with Yul Brynner still in the leading role. Brynner was replaced by George Kennedy in the 1969 sequel Guns of the Magnificent Seven and Lee Van Cleef took over the lead in the fourth and final entry, The Magnificent Seven Ride! which was released in 1972. All of the sequels are fairly anemic if compared to the original, but each is quite entertaining nonetheless. A primary asset for all the sequels:  Elmer Bernstein's superb main theme was retained for each film. The action begins at 8:00 and runs through the wee small hours of Friday. »

Rare Movie Alert! James Bond Alumni In "Triple Cross" On TCM Tomorrow

25 August 2009 9:49 AM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Turner Classic Movies (North America) is presenting a full day of Yul Brynner films tomorrow. Among them is the rarely-seen 1967 WWII spy thriller Triple Cross that pairs Brynner with a stellar cast including Christopher Plummer and Trevor Howard. The film is directed by Terence Young, who helmed the early James Bond classics and, intriguingly, the movie features three prominent Bond cast members: Thunderball leading lady Claudine Auger, Dr. No baddie Anthony Dawson and Goldfinger himself, Gert Frobe. The film has never been released on video in the USA. It airs at 3:30 Pm (Est) Incidentally, keep your video recorders in high gear because other Brynner gems showing throughout the day include Taras Bulba, Adios Sabata, The Magnificent Seven, The King and I, Kings of the Sun and Westworld. »

Why You Shouldn’t Avoid Subtitled Movies

6 August 2009 3:39 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

It is a a sad, sad truth that most English-speaking movie-goers will not watch foreign (and therefore subtitled) movies. No matter the type of film… Regardless of actors, the director, or whatever - if it’s not in English and subtitles have to be read, the choice will usually be made to opt for something else that doesn’t require reading while watching a movie.

There are several weak reasons for this: The most basic reason is that one has to Actually Read (blasphemy!) in order to understand what’s going on. Then there’s the fact that (most) subtitles appear along the bottom of the screen and therefore takes some of a viewer’s concentration off the action that’s taking place. Finally, subtitles require more attention be paid to a movie that’s not in one’s native language (English).

But as a lover of all types of cinema, »
