‘The aliens are among us’ or so it seems from those that fear immigration or difference of any kind. “Keep watching the skies” during the original atomic fear is also a tagline in the more subtle version of The Thing From Another World (1951). The Creature Walks Among Us (1956) was an underrated third sequel to the Creature From The Black Lagoon series of films touching on themes of difference, adaptability and wanting to go home. Alien Conspiracies – The Hidden Truth (2023) isn’t an episode of The X-Files television series but a documentary film bringing into focus the idea that Earth has been invaded or influenced by an alien presence.

Today marks a tragic moment in Hollywood history, as Ricou Browning, the Gill-man himself and the last remaining actor to play a Universal Classic Monster. has passed away at 93. The actor's daughter Kim Browning told The Hollywood Reporter that his death at his Southwest Ranches, Florida residence was due to natural causes. She added, "He had a fabulous career in the film industry, providing wonderful entertainment for past and future generations." Browning was a cinematic, nautical legend, and his unique skill set kept him working in the field for most of his life. He famously claimed he could hold his breath for over four minutes, which isn't hard to believe considering his line of work.
Browning's appearance in the 1954 feature "Creature from the Black Lagoon" created another monstrous icon for Universal, which had already turned horror characters like Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, and the Wolf-Man into mainstream celebrities. Although Ben Chapman...

Ricou Browning, the actor, stuntman and diver whose work in the 1954 sci-fi classic “Creature From the Black Lagoon” launched his career as an expert water-based filmmaker, died less than two weeks after his 93rd birthday, his son Ricou Browning Jr. confirmed to TheWrap on Tuesday.
The diver, who legend has it could hold his breath for up to four minutes at a time, landed the iconic role in 1953 after being asked by a film crew to help scout locations at Wakulla Springs Florida for the Universal monster film. He was already performing underwater newsreels shot at the tourist spot.
“Their cameraman asked if I could swim in front of the cameras so they could get the perspective of the size of a human being against the fish and the grass. So I did,” he told the Hartford Courant in 2016. Ben Chapman portrayed the Creature – also known as Gill Man – on land,...

There’s sad news to report this evening, as it has been announced that Ricou Browning – who was the last surviving actor to have played a classic Universal Monster, since he portrayed the Gill-Man in the underwater scenes in all three entries of the Creature from the Black Lagoon trilogy; Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), Revenge of the Creature (1955), and The Creature Walks Among Us (1956) – has passed away at the age of 93. We’ve lost another true legend in the world of horror. Bloody Disgusting has learned today that Ricou Browning, known for playing the titular Creature from the Black Lagoon in Universal’s original 1954 horror classic, has passed away this week at the age of 93.
Ricou Browning played the Gill-Man for the film’s extensive underwater sequences, and he subsequently reprised the iconic role in the sequels Revenge of the Creature (1955) and The Creature Walks Among Us (1956).
An underwater cinematographer and stuntman, Ricou Browning was uniquely equipped to play the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and he went on to direct the underwater sequences in films including Thunderball (1965), Hello Down There (1969), Caddyshack (1980), and Never Say Never Again (1983). Browning made his directorial debut with 1973’s sea lion movie Salty, and he notably also co-created the classic “Flipper” franchise. Browning later directed the movie Mr. No Legs (1978), centered on a man with shotguns built into his wheelchair.

Perhaps Universal’s most renowned contributions to cinema lie in their horror library. Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, if you can name it they probably made it. But until now, that awesome catalogue was unavailable to view in one place. Sounds like the grousing of a spoilt millennial, I know. The fact is that we’ve all become accustomed to having content at our fingertips. Praise be then that a streaming service has today launched to fulfil that demand. Peacock brings Universal’s esteemed horror collection to the masses.
Unlike its rivals, the service has both a paid-for package and a free one (though you’ll have to contend with adverts). Why not take a look at all the horror films currently available for free, though? Trick question, as there’s no reason why not to. That’s why all the horror films currently available for free are listed below.

Not enough love is set aside for this ambitious, under-budgeted Lost Civilization epic. John Agar and Cynthia Patrick find love in an ancient albino race that worships a Death Ray and enslaves a race of Subterranean Humanoid Underground Dwellers — Mole Men, what else? It’s unconvincing and the production lacks polish, but it’s also got clever story gimmicks and sympathetic monsters, so it gets a warm reception at CineSavant Central.

It’s controversy in the Black Lagoon! Universal releases a much-desired box of all three Gill Man epics — but goes cheap on the encoding and hands us a 3-D rendering of Revenge of the Creature at half-resolution. When is a Blu-ray not a Blu-ray? When it’s not even full HD. And all that after commissioning a state-of-the-art 4k 3-D video remaster!

It’s funny how much one year can change something as niche as a bizarre subgenre of ’50s monster movies. A year ago, the Crypt of Curiosities kicked off with a piece that touched on tons of different films in the “Gillsploitation” genre, a silly little corner of horror cinema that riffed on Jack Arnold’s classic The Creature from the Black Lagoon to deliver all sorts of bizarre B-movie delights. There were your run of the mill rip-offs, there were Vincent Price films, hell, there were even Japanese monster movies and Italian gore-fests. It was a short-lived, sparsely populated subgenre, and to tell you the truth, I wasn’t expecting there to be any real big Gill-Man films again after Carpenter’s Creature from the Black Lagoon reboot got canned in the ’90s.
And then a little movie called The Shape of Water came out and changed everything. Suddenly,...

Every horror fan has their favorite type of monster. Some people love shambling zombies, others prefer squid-faced aliens from beyond the stars, and I’m sure there are a few people out there who would swear that The Mangler is the greatest beast to grace the silver screen. But for me, one archetype has always reigned supreme: the scaly fish-man.
I can’t explain why, but ever since I was a kid, sea life has always interested me, so it should come as no surprise that as far as famous monsters go, the Gill-man’s always been my favorite. Unfortunately, being a fan of the Gill-man can lead to some issues. Unlike Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Mummy, the Gill-man was an original creation of Universal, and as such, was not in the public domain. Two years ago Universal released an Essential Collection of their most well-known monster films in newly remastered HD Blu-rays, and now they’ve followed up that set with a far more complete box set — 31 feature films (including the Spanish Dracula) covering the years from 1931 to 1956. Universal Classic Monsters: Complete Collection 1931-1956 brings together six previously released Legacy Collections plus 1943’s Phantom of the Opera. Each collection focuses on one classic character — Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon — starting with each of their highly revered debuts and followed by the characters’ appearances in sequels and spin-offs. I’d seen those debuts of course, albeit most of them decades ago, but I’d never seen many of these sequels. Until now. Creature from the Black Lagoon was the last of Universal’s classic monsters to see the light of day — so obviously I’m starting this month-long column with...

Universal Studios tried to revive their classic monsters with 2004's Van Helsing, which starred Hugh Jackman ("The Wolverine") and Kate Beckinsale ("Underworld"). It featured a bunch of monsters: vampires, werewolves and Frankenstein's monster. But there was another monster that was supposed to appear in the film - the Creature from the Black Lagoon (also known as Gill-man) . Sadly, the scene didn't make it into the film, but you can view the storyboards below that storyboard artist Doug Brode ("Looper") worked on. For those of you not familiar, Gill-man was featured in the 1954 film the Creature from the Black Lagoon and its two sequels, Revenge of the Creature (1955) and The Creature Walks Among Us (1956). Universal has made several attempts to reboot the franchise but they've been unsuccessful so far. Though, hope was renewed in July of this year when Universal hired Alex Kurtzman ("Star Trek Into Darkness") and Chris...

Draft Day I guess the discussion before releasing Draft Day was whether or not to take advantage of the start of the NFL season with the theatrical release or the DVD and Blu-ray release and the home video marketing team won because clearly that's the reason for bringing it out today, but does anyone care at this pointc The movie is no good, especially for anyone with a passing understanding of, or interest in, the NFL.

Reactions from the talent behind films eviscerated on MST3k have varied (it could be a joke, but the crew claims Joe Don Baker of Mitchell fame wants to take a swing at them), though not as much as fans of the films proper. A famous, though unverified, story has Dennis Miller flying the cast to a filming of his HBO show only to scream at them for having their way with Marooned! In light of the recent announcement that creator Joel Hodgson wants to reboot the cult favourite, here’s a look at a few episodes that may not have been playing fair.
5. Revenge of The Creature (Season 8, Episode 1)
There is a delicate chemistry to enjoying trash on its own merit. Too bad or too good, it can easily throw things off-balance into the oblivion of the unwatchable. Creature upped the stakes of the classic original by bringing it to local beaches and,...

Mockbusters were around way before The Asylum. The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) and its subsequent sequels Revenge of the Creature (1955) and finally The Creature Walks Among Us (1956) also had an illegitimate cousin.
In 1955 the crew who worked on Jack Arnold's sequel to the seminal Universal classic, entitled Revenge of the Creature, thought it would be fun to produce and shoot their own Creature spoof/knock-off at Florida's Marine Studios. The fruit of their labor was the little known and even littler seen Return of the Creature. The twenty-minute flick was shown at the wrap party for Revenge and never seen again.
Now, after 58 years of speculation as to whether or not this flick actually existed, a researcher named Tom Weaver has uncovered the long lost film, and there are plans to screen it at this year's Monster Bash in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Weaver explains to RoboJapan, "About 15 years ago,...

There have been many TV bios of Elvis Presley but Elvis, The Movie, the once-elusive 1979 feature starring Kurt Russell, was the first and is still the best. When Elvis died August 16 1978 at age 42, it sent shock waves around the world, comparable to the deaths of Princess Diana or Michael Jackson in later decades. A carnival atmosphere developed in Memphis as thousands of mourners gathered around the gates of Graceland and sales of Elvis. music skyrocketed. The 3-hour epic Elvis The Movie, produced by Dick Clark for the ABC network premiered 18 months later on February 11 1979 and, despite CBS airing Gone With The Wind the same night, was one of the highest rated made-for-television movies ever shown (it played theatrically on other parts of the world . in Japan it was called The Singer!). The script by Antony Lawrence, who had penned two Elvis movies earlier in his career (Paradise Hawaiin Style and...

Variety is reporting that Carl Rinsch, director of February’s forthcoming remake of George Romero’s The Crazies, is in talks with Universal to direct the studios’ long gestating remake of the 1954 classic Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Recently Breck Eisner (Sahara) had been attached to helm the project, but left earlier this year.
Gary Ross (of Seabiscuit and Pleasantville) wrote previous drafts of the project. Fans will no doubt know that Gary Ross is in fact the son of Arthur Ross, one of the co-writers of the original Creature from the Black Lagoon (along with Maurice Zimm and Harry Essex).
Rinsch is currently next directing 47 Ronin, also for Universal, a samurai-adventure pic to star Keanu Reeves.
Universal is eager to continue resurrecting their classic monsters, the Black Lagoon remake would fall into place behind U’s The Wolfman, starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving,...

Bah-rooooooooo!!!
To help promote the February 2010 release of their long-awaited retelling of the classic legend of The Wolfman, Universal Pictures has launched their Monster's Legacy Website, which features rare clips, images and music from all of Universal's classic monster movies, commencing with The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) through The Creature Walks Among Us (1956). Some argue that Universal Pictures singlehandedly introduced the world to the horror genre--now officially an octogenarian--through the likes of Frankenstein (1931), Dracula (1931), and (of course) the original Wolfman (1941).
Cross-published on The Evening Class.

Universal has just launched a new website, appropriately titled – Universal Monster Legacy.
The site features a detailed catalog of the studio’s groundbreaking, defining and immortal horror content from 1923 (with Lon Chaney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame) through 1956 (with the final Gill-Man film, The Creature Walks Among Us).
The focus is on the Universal (or can we call it Comcast-Uni now?) stable of classic monsters that include Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and so on. Largely excluded are the studio’s non-monster horror outings of the same period, but the emphasis on the monster films is not only welcome but explicitly intentional, so it’s hard to call foul.
Each featured film has a page including a synopsis, as well as art, photo and video galleries.
But best of all, the site features several cues of...

Universal is making an attempt to raise awareness that the Wolfman coming out next year isn't actually the first Wolfman. They recently unveiled the ultra rad Monster Legacy website with all kinds of goodies for fans and newbies alike. And the best part, they don't shove ads for The Wolfman down your throat the whole time! Chronicling Universal's entire classic horror catalog from 1923's Hunchback of Notre Dame to 1956's The Creature Walks Among Us, Monster Legacy is loaded with posters, synopses, and several clips from each and every one of 22 movies listed. Adding to the already loads of fun is the soundtrack, which I can only guess will grow as the music gets grabbed by Universal. The site cycles through a playlist of music featured in choice films from the collection and it's a perfect accompaniment to your horror browsing. The very speculative implication of the site is that...

ReelzChannel spoke to Gary Ross (Big, Seabiscuit) today about his plans to remake Creature From the Black Lagoon. Ross is currently doing press for his upcoming animated adaptation of the children's classic The Tale of Despereaux.
As some may already know, Ross is the son of iconic B-movie writer Arthur A. Ross, who penned the original Creature film as well as the sequel The Creature Walks Among Us. The elder Ross recently passed away, and his son hopes to pay homage to his father by writing and producing the remake.
"It’s going great," Ross said with a big smile. "We’re actually moving forward. My dad wrote the original, so it’s not a reference to what the original is. We take it sort of seriously. We found some scientific underpinnings for it, which my dad actually developed in the original. He actually based it on a lungfish that was found around that time.
